Abstract:We give explicit formulae for a class of complex linear unitary characters of the congruence subgroups $\Gamma_0(N)$ which involve a variant of Rademacher's $\Psi$ function. We then prove that these characters cover all characters of $\Gamma_0(N)$ precisely when $N=1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10,12,13$.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simple finite dimensional complex Lie algebra and let $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$ be the corresponding affine Lie algebra. Kac and Wakimoto observed that in some cases the coefficients in the character formula for a simple highest weight $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-module are either bounded or are given by a linear function of the weight. We explain and generalize this observation using Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, by computing values at $q=1$ of certain (parabolic) affine inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In particular, we obtain explicit character formulas for some $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-modules of negative integer level $k$ when $\mathfrak g$ is of type $D_n$, $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$ and $k \geqslant -2, -3, -4, -6$ respectively, as conjectured by Kac and Wakimoto. The calculation relies on the explicit description of the canonical basis in the cell quotient of the anti-spherical module over the affine Hecke algebra corresponding to the subregular cell. We also present an explicit description of the corresponding objects in the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution, they correspond to irreducible objects in the heart of a certain $t$-structure related to the so called non-commutative Springer resolution.

Abstract:Let $Hom^0(\Gamma,G)$ be the path-connected component of the identity representation of the variety of representations of a finitely generated nilpotent group $\Gamma$ into a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group $G$. With the formulas given by Florentino, Lawton and Silva, we provide explicit partition type formulas for the mixed Hodge polynomials of character varieties $Hom^0(\Gamma,G)// G$ when $G=Sp_{2n}$ and $G=SO_{n}$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $N<G$ a normal subgroup with $G/N$ abelian. We show how the conjugacy classes of $G$ in a given coset $qN$ relate to the irreducible characters of $G$ that are not identically $0$ on $qN$. We describe several consequences. In particular, we deduce that when $G/N$ is cyclic generated by $q$, the number of irreducible characters of $N$ that extend to $G$ is the number of conjugacy classes of $G$ in $qN$.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:For any branched double covering of compact Riemann surfaces, we consider the associated character varieties that are unitary in the global sense, which we call $\text{GL}_n\rtimes\!<\!\sigma\!>\!~$-character varieties. We restrict the monodromies around the ramification points to generic semi-simple conjugacy classes contained in $\text{GL}_n\sigma$, and compute the E-polynomials of these character varieties using the character table of $\text{GL}_n(q)\rtimes\!<\!\sigma\!>\!$. The result is expressed as the inner product of certain symmetric functions associated to the wreath products $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^N\rtimes\mathfrak{S}_N$. We are then led to a conjectural formula for the mixed Hodge polynomial, which involves (modified) Macdonald polynomials and wreath Macdonald polynomials.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal O_p$ denote the characteristic $p>0$ version of the ordinary category $\mathcal O$ for a semisimple complex Lie algebra. In this paper we give some (formal) character formulas in $\mathcal O_p$. First we concentrate on the irreducible characters. Here we give explicit formulas for how to obtain all irreducible characters from the characters of the finitely many restricted simple modules as well as the characters of a small number of infinite dimensional simple modules in $\mathcal O_p$ with specified highest weights. We next prove a strong linkage principle for Verma modules which allow us to split $\mathcal O_p$ into a finite direct sum of linkage classes. There are corresponding translation functors and we use these to further cut down the set of irreducible characters needed for determining all others. Then we show that the twisting functors on $\mathcal O$ carry over to twisting functors on $\mathcal O_p$, and as an application we prove a character sum formula for Jantzen-type filtrations of Verma modules with antidominant highest weights. Finally, we record formulas relating the characters of the two kinds of tilting modules in $\mathcal O_p$.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a vertex operator approach to construct and compute all complex irreducible characters of the general linear group $\GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$. Green's theory of $\GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$ is recovered and enhanced under the realization of the Grothendieck ring of representations $R_G=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}R(\GL_n(\mathbb F_q))$ as two isomorphic Fock spaces associated to two infinite-dimensional $F$-equivariant Heisenberg Lie algebras $\widehat{\mathfrak{h}}_{\hat{\overline{\mathbb F}}_q}$ and $\widehat{\mathfrak{h}}_{\overline{\mathbb F}_q}$, where $F$ is the Frobenius automorphism of the algebraically closed field $\overline{\mathbb F}_q$. Under this picture, the irreducible characters are realized by the Bernstein vertex operators for Schur functions, the characteristic functions of the conjugacy classes are realized by the vertex operators for the Hall-Littlewood functions, and the character table is completely given by matrix coefficients of vertex operators of these two types. One of the features of the current approach is a simpler identification of the Fock space $R_G$ as the Hall algebra of symmetric functions via vertex operator calculus, and another is that we are able to compute in general the character table, where Green's degree formula is demonstrated as an example.

Abstract:A base for a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $\Omega$ is a sequence $\mathcal{B}$ of points of $\Omega$ such that the pointwise stabiliser $G_{\mathcal{B}}$ is trivial. The base size of $G$ is the size of a smallest base for $G$. We derive a character theoretic formula for the base size of a class of groups admitting a certain kind of irreducible character. Moreover, we prove a formula for enumerating the non-equivalent bases for $G$ of size $l\in\mathbb{N}$. As a consequence of our results, we present a very short, entirely algebraic proof of the formula of Mecenero and Spiga~\cite{MeSp} for the base size of the symmetric group $\mathrm{S}_n$ acting on the $k$-element subsets of $\{1,2,3,\dots,n\}$. Our methods also provide a formula for the base size of many product-type permutation groups.

Abstract:A known result for the finite general linear group $\GL(n,\FF_q)$ and for the finite unitary group $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ posits that the sum of the irreducible character degrees is equal to the number of symmetric matrices in the group. Fulman and Guralnick extended this result by considering sums of irreducible characters evaluated at an arbitrary conjugacy class of $\GL(n,\FF_q)$. We develop an explicit formula for the value of the permutation character of $\U(2n,\FF_{q^2})$ over $\Sp(2n,\FF_q)$ evaluated an an arbitrary conjugacy class and use results concerning Gelfand-Graev characters to obtain an analogous formula for $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ in the case where $q$ is an odd prime. These results are also given as probabilistic statements.

Abstract:We find an explicit formula for the gamma vector in terms of the input polynomial in a way that extends it to arbitrary polynomials. More specifically, we find explicit linear combination in terms of coefficients of the input polynomial (using Catalan numbers and binomial coefficients) and an expression involving the derivative of the input polynomial. In the case where the input is the $h$-polynomial of a simplicial complex, this gives an interpretation of the gamma vector as a measure of differences in local and global contributions. We also apply them to connect signs/inequalities of (shifts of) the gamma vector to upper/lower bound conditions on coefficients of the input polynomial. Finally, we make use of the shape of the sums used to make these estimates and connections with intersection numbers to relate these properties of the gamma vector to algebraic structures.

Explicit formulas for the Grothendieck class of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$

Abstract:We obtain explicit expressions for the class in the Grothendieck group of varieties of the moduli space of genus 0 stable curves with n marked points. This information is equivalent to the Poincaré polynomial; it implies explicit expressions for the Betti numbers of the moduli space in terms of Stirling numbers or, alternatively, Bernoulli numbers. The expressions are obtained by solving a differential equation characterizing the generating function for the Grothendieck class as shown in work of Yuri Manin from the 1990s. This differential equation is equivalent to S. Keel's recursion for the Betti numbers of these moduli spaces. Our proof reduces the solution to two combinatorial identities which follow from applications of Lagrange series. We also study generating functions for the individual Betti numbers. In previous work it had been shown that these functions are determined by a set of polynomials with positive rational coefficients, which are conjecturally log-concave. We verify this conjecture for many infinite families of these polynomials, corresponding to the generating functions for the $2k$-Betti numbers of the moduli spaces for all $k\le 100$. Further, studying these polynomials allows us to prove that the generating function for the Grothendieck class of the moduli spaces may be written as a series of rational functions in the Lefschetz motive and the principal branch of the Lambert W-function. We include an interpretation of the main result in terms of Stirling matrices and a discussion of the Euler characteristic of the moduli space.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new explanation of congruences of Eisenstein series of level $\Gamma_1(N)$ and character $\chi$. Our approach is based on Katz's algebro-geometric explanation of $p$-adic congruences of normalized Eisenstein series $E_{2k}$ of level $1$. One crucial step in our argument is to reformulate a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence in Katz's explanation in terms of Dieudonné theory of height $1$ formal $A$-modules and their finite subgroup schemes. We give a generalization of this Riemann-Hilbert correspondence in terms of formal groups of height greater than $1$.

Ninth variation of classical group characters of type A-D and Littlewood identities

Abstract:We introduce certain generalisations of the characters of the classical Lie groups, extending the recently defined factorial characters of Foley and King. In this extension, the factorial powers are replaced with an arbitrary sequence of polynomials, as in Sergeev-Veselov's generalised Schur functions and Okada's generalised Schur P- and Q-functions. We also offer a similar generalisation for the rational Schur functions. We derive Littlewood-type identities for our generalisations. These identities allow us to give new (unflagged) Jacobi-Trudi identities for the Foley-King factorial characters and for rational versions of the factorial Schur functions. We also propose an extension of the original Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions to the case of symplectic and orthogonal characters, which helps us prove Nägelsbach-Kostka identities.

Abstract:We use recent results of Rolen, Zwegers, and the first author to study characters of irreducible (highest weight) modules for the vertex operator algebra $L_{\frak{sl}_\ell}(-\Lambda_0)$. We establish asymptotic behaviors of characters for the (ordinary) irreducible $L_{\frak{sl}_\ell}(-\Lambda_0)$-modules. As a consequence we prove that their quantum dimensions are one, as predicted by representation theory. We also establish a full asymptotic expansion of irreducible characters for $\frak{sl}_3$. Finally, we determine a decomposition formula for the full characters in terms of unary theta and false theta functions which allows us to study their modular properties.
