Abstract:In this paper we extend the study initiated in [1] to the computation of one-loop elastic amplitudes. We consider 1+1 dimensional massive bosonic Lagrangians with polynomial-like potentials and absence of inelastic processes at the tree level; starting from these assumptions we show how to write sums of one-loop diagrams as products and integrals of tree-level amplitudes. We derive in this way a universal formula for the one-loop two-to-two S-matrices in terms of tree S-matrices. We test our results on different integrable theories, such as sinh-Gordon, Bullough-Dodd and the full class of simply-laced affine Toda theories, finding perfect agreement with the bootstrapped S-matrices known in the literature. We show how Landau singularities in amplitudes are naturally captured by our universal formula while they are lost in results based on unitarity-cut methods implemented in the past [2, 3].

Abstract:bstract We show how one-loop corrections to scattering amplitudes of scalars and gauge bosons can be obtained from tree amplitudes in one higher dimension. Starting with a complete tree-level scattering amplitude of n + 2 particles in five dimensions, one assumes that two of them cannot be “detected” and therefore an integration over their LIPS is carried out. The resulting object, function of the remaining n particles, is taken to be four-dimensional by restricting the corresponding momenta. We perform this procedure in the context of the tree-level CHY formulation of amplitudes. The scattering equations obtained in the procedure coincide with those derived by Geyer et al. from ambitwistor constructions and recently studied by two of the authors for bi-adjoint scalars. They have two sectors of solutions: regular and singular. We prove that the contribution from regular solutions generically gives rise to unphysical poles. However, using a BCFW argument we prove that the unphysical contributions are always homogeneous functions of the loop momentum and can be discarded. We also show that the contribution from singular solutions turns out to be homogeneous as well.
One-loop integrability with shifting masses

Abstract:We investigate the perturbative integrability of two-dimensional massive quantum field theories with polynomial-like interactions and show that any theory of such class which is purely elastic at the tree level is also purely elastic at one loop. To preserve the elasticity, the physical renormalized masses of the theory must differ from the classical ones by quantum corrections carried by one-loop bubble diagrams. After the masses are corrected in this manner we show that one-loop inelastic processes vanish and integrability is preserved under one-loop effects. Relying on this fact we show that the closed expression for one-loop S-matrices in terms of tree S-matrices obtained in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2402.12087" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.12087">arXiv:2402.12087</a> extends to models that do not preserve the mass ratios at one loop. We test our results on the full class of nonsimply-laced affine Toda theories and find exact match with the S-matrices bootstrapped in the past.

Abstract:We show that the forward limit of tree-level scattering equations with two massive particles yields the SL(2,C)-covariant form of the one-loop scattering equations recently proposed by Geyer et al. We clarify several properties about these equations and the formulas at one loop. We then argue that in the bi-adjoint scalar theory, such forward limit yields the correct one-loop massless amplitudes, which leads to a new formula for the latter.

Abstract:We give a proof that the pure spinor superstring theory in a novel infinite tension limit, as was discussed recently by Berkovits, reproduces the tree-level scattering amplitudes of the ten-dimensional $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 super Yang-Mills in its heterotic version and type II supergravity in its type II version. The Yang-Mills case agrees with the result obtained by Mafra, Schlotterer, Stieberger and Tsimpis.

Abstract:The two-point string amplitude at tree level in flat spacetime reproduces the expected expression for free particles. This has been proven by Erbin, Maldacena and Skliros in [JHEP 07 (2019) 139] by two methods. Here, we provide an alternative proof of this result. Our method consists in considering a timelike Liouville direction as a regularization parameter, which suffices to break time translation invariance and, at the same time, to stabilize the residual conformal symmetry in the worldsheet. This allows taking a limit and restoring Poincare symmetry in a controlled way, thus reproducing the correct expression of the two-point amplitude.

A Relation between One-Loop Amplitudes of Closed and Open Strings (One-Loop KLT Relation)

Abstract:We express one-loop closed string amplitudes as weighted sums over squares of open string one-loop subamplitudes. These findings generalize - subject to final complex structure modulus integration - the celebrated tree-level relationships known as Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations to higher loops and can be applied for both the massless and massive case - with or without supersymmetry. As a consequence in the field-theory limit our relations capitalize solid one-loop gauge-gravity relations including loop-level color kinematics duality. In particular, in gravitational one-loop amplitudes a graviton is traded for two gluons just like at tree-level. Our results are derived on the underlying string world-sheet torus by splitting each complex string coordinate into a pair of two real cylinder coordinates by means of an analytic continuation on the elliptic curve. This manipulation involves the loop momentum, which mediates between the two one-loop open string cylinder amplitudes.

Regge Limit of One-Loop String Amplitudes

Abstract:We study the high-energy limit of $2 \to 2$ one-loop string amplitudes at fixed momentum transfer. For the closed string, the high-energy behaviour of the amplitudes can be determined from Regge theory just like in field theory, as was first discussed by Amati, Ciafaloni and Veneziano. However, field theory intuition partially breaks down for the open-string amplitude, where amplitudes can exhibit surprising asymptotics in the high-energy limit depending on the topology of the diagram. We call this phenomenon Regge attenuation. We extract Regge limits by a combination of unitarity cuts and saddle-point analysis. We show that the leading contribution of the planar open-string amplitude is sufficiently simple that we can extract it at any loop order. This allows us to resum the genus expansion in a certain limit and demonstrate that the leading Regge trajectory remains linear in that limit.

Four loop elasticity renormalization of low temperature flat polymerized membranes

Abstract:We provide the complete four loop perturbative renormalization of a low temperature statistical mechanics model of flat polymerized membranes. Within a non-local effective flexural theory based on transverse elastic fluctuations, we determine analytically, at the four existing fixed points, the anomalous elasticity critical exponent $\eta$ which controls all scaling behaviors in the theory. Results are obtained as apparently convergent series, enabling precise estimates without resummations. We independently confirm and complement the results of recent four-loop work [Pikelner 2022 EPL 138 17002] carried out in a different model. We also find good agreement with non-perturbative approaches and experiments on soft materials and graphene.

Abstract:Following the new gauging fixing method of D'Hoker and Phong, we study two-loop superstrings in hyperelliptic language. By using hyperelliptic representation of genus 2 Riemann surface we derive a set of identities involving the Szegö kernel. These identities are used to prove the vanishing of the cosmological constant and the non-renormalization theorem point-wise in moduli space by doing the summation over all the 10 even spin structures. Modular invariance is maintained at every stage of the computation explicitly. The 4-particle amplitude is also computed and an explicit expression for the chiral integrand is obtained. We use this result to show that the perturbative correction to the $R^4$ term in type II superstring theories is vanishing at two loops. In this paper, a summary of the main results is presented with detailed derivations to be provided in two subsequent publications.

Abstract:We evaluate one-loop open-string amplitudes at finite $\alpha'$ for the first time. Our method involves a deformation of the integration contour over the modular parameter $\tau$ to a fractal contour introduced by Rademacher in the context of analytic number theory. This procedure leads to explicit and practical formulas for the one-loop four-point amplitudes in type-I superstring theory, amenable to numerical evaluation. We plot the amplitudes as a function of the Mandelstam invariants $s$ and $t$ and directly verify long-standing conjectures about their behaviour at high energies.

Abstract:Inspired by the recent work of Nima Arkani Hamed and collaborators who introduced the notion of positive geometry to account for the structure of tree-level scattering amplitudes in bi-adjoint theory, which led to one-loop descriptions of the integrands. Here, we consider the one-loop integrals themselves in theory. In order to achieve this end, the geometrical construction offered by Schnetz for Feynman diagrams is hereby extended, and the results are presented. The extension relies on masking the loop momentum variable with a constant and proceeding with the calculations. The results appear as a construction given in a diagrammatic manner. The significance of the resulting triangular diagrams is that they have a common side amongst themselves for the corresponding Feynman diagrams they pertain to. Further extensions to this mathematical construction can lead to additional insights into higher loops. A mathematica code has been provided in order to generate the final results given the initial parameters of the theory.

Lorentzian contours for tree-level string amplitudes

Abstract:We engineer compact contours on the moduli spaces of genus-zero Riemann surfaces that achieve analytic continuation from Euclidean to Lorentzian worldsheets. These generalized Pochhammer contours are based on the combinatorics of associahedra and make the analytic properties of tree-level amplitudes entirely manifest for any number and type of external strings. We use them in practice to perform first numerical computations of open and closed string amplitudes directly in the physical kinematics for $n=4,5,6,7,8,9$. We provide a code that allows anyone to do such computations.

Loops of Loops Expansion in the Amplituhedron

Abstract:We study a novel geometric expansion for scattering amplitudes in the planar sector of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory, in the context of the Amplituhedron which reproduces the all-loop integrand as a canonical differential form on the positive geometry. In a paper by Arkani-Hamed, Henn and one of the authors, it was shown that this result can be recast in terms of negative geometries with a certain hierarchy of loops (closed cycles) in the space of loop momenta, represented by lines in momentum twistor space. One can then calculate an all-loop order result in the approximation where only tree graphs in the space of all loops are considered. Furthermore, using differential equation methods, it is possible to calculate and resum integrated expressions and obtain strong coupling results. In this paper, we provide a more general framework for the loops of loops expansion and outline a powerful method for the determination of differential forms for higher-order geometries. We solve the problem completely for graphs with one internal cycle, but the method can be used more generally for other geometries.

Absence of one-loop effects on large scales from small scales in non-slow-roll dynamics

Abstract:We show that one-loop corrections to the large-scale power spectrum from small-scale modes in non-slow-roll dynamics are always negligible, namely they are volume suppressed by the ratio of the short to long distance scales. One-loop contributions proportional to the long wavelength tree-level power spectrum, and not sharing this suppression, appear only when considering a subset of vertexes, but they cancel exactly when all relevant interactions are taken into account. We prove the previous statement in two different ways, i.e. by using two equivalent forms of the interaction Hamiltonian. Contributions from boundary terms to equal time correlators are included when necessary.

Abstract:A general one-loop scattering amplitude may be expanded in terms of master integrals. The coefficients of the master integrals can be obtained from tree-level input in a two-step process. First, use known formulas to write the coefficients of (4-2 is an element of)-dimensional master integrals; these formulas depend on an additional variable, u, which encodes the dimensional shift. Second, convert the u-dependent coefficients of (4-2 is an element of)-dimensional master integrals to explicit coefficients of dimensionally shifted master integrals. This procedure requires the initial formulas for coefficients to have polynomial dependence on u. Here, we give a proof of this property in the case of massless propagators. The proof is constructive. Thus, as a byproduct, we produce different algebraic expressions for the scalar integral coefficients, in which the polynomial property is apparent. In these formulas, the box and pentagon contributions are separated explicitly.

Abstract:By employing the perturbiner method we study the tree- and one-loop-level amplitudes in (anti)self-dual Yang-Mills, focusing on color-kinematics duality and double copy features; they arise naturally even in the fully off-shell case. In particular, we calculate the respective the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations for tree-level Berends-Giele currents and color-kinematics master numerators at one loop, both cases for any number of external particles.

Abstract:The Loop-Tree Duality (LTD) is a novel perturbative method in QFT that establishes a relation between loop-level and tree-level scattering amplitudes. This is achieved by directly applying the Residue Theorem to the loop-energy-integration. The result is a sum over all possible single cuts of the Feynman diagram in consideration integrated over a modified phase space. These single-cut integrals, called Dual contributions, are in fact tree-level objects and thus give rise to the opportunity of bringing loop- and tree-contributions together, treating them simultaneously in a common Monte Carlo event generator. Initially introduced for one-loop scalar integrals, the applicability of the LTD has been expanded ever since. In this thesis, we show how to deal with Feynman graphs beyond simple poles by taking advantage of Integration By Parts (IBP) relations. Furthermore, we investigate the cancellation of singularities among Dual contributions as well as between real and virtual corrections. For the first time, a numerical implementation of the LTD was done in the form of a computer program that calculates one-loop scattering diagrams. We present details on the contour deformation employed alongside the results for scalar integrals up to the pentagon- and tensor integrals up to the hexagon-level.
