Abstract:We consider matrices with complex entries that are perturbed by a complex Gaussian matrix with small variance. We prove that if the unperturbed matrix satisfies certain local laws then the bulk correlation functions are universal in the large N limit. Assuming the entries are independent and identically distributed (iid) with a common distribution that has finite moments, the Gaussian component is removed by the four moment theorem of Tao and Vu.

Abstract:We consider real, Gauss-divisible matrices $A_{t}=A+\sqrt{t}B$, where $B$ is from the real Ginibre ensemble. We prove that the bulk correlation functions converge to a universal limit for $t=O(N^{-1/3+\epsilon})$ if $A$ satisfies certain local laws. If $A=\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}(\xi_{jk})_{j,k=1}^{N}$ with $\xi_{jk}$ independent and identically distributed real random variables having zero mean, unit variance and finite moments, the Gaussian component can be removed using local laws proven by Bourgade--Yau--Yin, Alt--Erdős--Krüger and Cipolloni--Erdős--Schröder and the four moment theorem of Tao--Vu.

Abstract:Let $X=(X_{i,j})_{m\times n}, m\ge n$, be a complex Gaussian random matrix with mean zero and variance $\frac 1n$, let $S=X^*X$ be a sample covariance matrix. In this paper we are mainly interested in the limiting behavior of eigenvalues when $\frac mn\rightarrow \gamma\ge 1$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$. Under certain conditions on $k$, we prove the central limit theorem holds true for the $k$-th largest eigenvalues $\lambda_{(k)}$ as $k$ tends to infinity as $n\rightarrow\infty$. The proof is largely based on the Costin-Lebowitz-Soshnikov argument and the asymptotic estimates for the expectation and variance of the number of eigenvalues in an interval. The standard technique for the RH problem is used to compute the exact formula and asymptotic properties for the mean density of eigenvalues. As a by-product, we obtain a convergence speed of the mean density of eigenvalues to the Marchenko-Pastur distribution density under the condition $|\frac mn-\gamma|=O(\frac 1n)$.

Abstract:We consider complex, weakly non-Hermitian matrices $A = W_1 +i\sqrt{{\tau}_N}W_2$ , where $W_1$ and $W_2$ are Hermitian matrices and $\tau_N = O(N^{-1})$. We first show that for pairs of Hermitian matrices $(W_1 , W_2)$ such that $W_1$ satisfies a multi-resolvent local law and $W_2$ is bounded in norm, the bulk correlation functions of the weakly non-Hermitian Gauss-divisible matrix $A + \sqrt{t}B$ converge pointwise to a universal limit for $t = O(N^{-1+\epsilon})$. Using this and the reverse heat flow we deduce bulk universality in the case when $W_1$ and $W_2$ are independent Wigner matrices with sufficiently smooth density.

Abstract:We consider unitary random matrix ensembles Z_{n,s,t}^{-1}e^{-n tr V_{s,t}(M)}dM on the space of Hermitian n x n matrices M, where the confining potential V_{s,t} is such that the limiting mean density of eigenvalues (as n\to\infty and s,t\to 0) vanishes like a power 5/2 at a (singular) endpoint of its support. The main purpose of this paper is to prove universality of the eigenvalue correlation kernel in a double scaling limit. The limiting kernel is built out of functions associated with a special solution of the P_I^2 equation, which is a fourth order analogue of the Painleve I equation. In order to prove our result, we use the well-known connection between the eigenvalue correlation kernel and the Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem for orthogonal polynomials, together with the Deift/Zhou steepest descent method to analyze the RH problem asymptotically. The key step in the asymptotic analysis will be the construction of a parametrix near the singular endpoint, for which we use the model RH problem for the special solution of the P_I^2 equation. In addition, the RH method allows us to determine the asymptotics (in a double scaling limit) of the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials with respect to the varying weights e^{-nV_{s,t}} on \mathbb{R}. The special solution of the P_I^2 equation pops up in the n^{-2/7}-term of the asymptotics.

Abstract:It has been shown by Akemann, Ipsen and Kieburg that the squared singular values of products of $M$ rectangular random matrices with independent complex Gaussian entries are distributed according to a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel that admits a representation in terms of Meijer G-functions. We prove the universality of the local statistics of the squared singular values, namely, the bulk universality given by the sine kernel and the edge universality given by the Airy kernel. The proof is based on the asymptotic analysis for the double contour integral representation of the correlation kernel. Our strategy can be generalized to deal with other models of products of random matrices introduced recently and to establish similar universal results. Two more examples are investigated, one is the product of $M$ Ginibre matrices and the inverse of $K$ Ginibre matrices studied by Forrester, and the other one is the product of $M-1$ Ginibre matrices with one truncated unitary matrix considered by Kuijlaars and Stivigny.
Cusp Universality for Correlated Random Matrices

Abstract:For correlated real symmetric or complex Hermitian random matrices, we prove that the local eigenvalue statistics at any cusp singularity are universal. Since the density of states typically exhibits only square root edge or cubic root cusp singularities, our result completes the proof of the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta universality conjecture in all spectral regimes for a very general class of random matrices. Previously only the bulk and the edge universality were established in this generality [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1804.07744" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.07744">arXiv:1804.07744</a>], while cusp universality was proven only for Wigner-type matrices with independent entries [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1809.03971" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.03971">arXiv:1809.03971</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1811.04055" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1811.04055">arXiv:1811.04055</a>]. As our main technical input, we prove an optimal local law at the cusp using the Zigzag strategy, a recursive tandem of the characteristic flow method and a Green function comparison argument. Moreover, our proof of the optimal local law holds uniformly in the spectrum, thus also re-establishing universality of the local eigenvalue statistics in the previously studied bulk [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1705.10661" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1705.10661">arXiv:1705.10661</a>] and edge [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1804.07744" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.07744">arXiv:1804.07744</a>] regimes.

Universality for the global spectrum of random inner-product kernel matrices in the polynomial regime

Abstract:We consider certain large random matrices, called random inner-product kernel matrices, which are essentially given by a nonlinear function $f$ applied entrywise to a sample-covariance matrix, $f(X^TX)$, where $X \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times N}$ is random and normalized in such a way that $f$ typically has order-one arguments. We work in the polynomial regime, where $N \asymp d^\ell$ for some $\ell > 0$, not just the linear regime where $\ell = 1$. Earlier work by various authors showed that, when the columns of $X$ are either uniform on the sphere or standard Gaussian vectors, and when $\ell$ is an integer (the linear regime $\ell = 1$ is particularly well-studied), the bulk eigenvalues of such matrices behave in a simple way: They are asymptotically given by the free convolution of the semicircular and Marčenko-Pastur distributions, with relative weights given by expanding $f$ in the Hermite basis. In this paper, we show that this phenomenon is universal, holding as soon as $X$ has i.i.d. entries with all finite moments. In the case of non-integer $\ell$, the Marčenko-Pastur term disappears (its weight in the free convolution vanishes), and the spectrum is just semicircular.

Abstract:We survey the current status of universality limits for $m$-point correlation functions in the bulk and at the edge for unitary ensembles, primarily when the limiting kernels are Airy, Bessel, or Sine kernels. In particular, we consider underlying measures on compact intervals, and fixed and varying exponential weights, as well as universality limits for a variety of orthogonal systems. The scope of the survey is quite narrow: we do not consider $\beta$ ensembles for $\beta \neq 2$, nor general Hermitian matrices with independent entries, let alone more general settings. We include some open problems.

Abstract:We prove the universality of the joint distribution of an eigenvalue and the corresponding diagonal eigenvector overlap, in the bulk and at the edge, for eigenvalues of complex matrices and real eigenvalues of real matrices. As part of the proof we obtain a bound for the least non-zero singular value of $X-z$ when $z$ is an edge eigenvalue and a bound for the inner product between left and right singular vectors of $X-z$ when $|z|=1+O(N^{-1/2})$.

Fluctuation Around the Circular Law for Random Matrices with Real Entries

Abstract:We extend our recent result [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2019] on the central limit theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of non-Hermitian matrices $X$ with independent, identically distributed complex entries to the real symmetry class. We find that the expectation and variance substantially differ from their complex counterparts, reflecting (i) the special spectral symmetry of real matrices onto the real axis; and (ii) the fact that real i.i.d. matrices have many real eigenvalues. Our result generalizes the previously known special cases where either the test function is analytic [O'Rourke, Renfrew 2016] or the first four moments of the matrix elements match the real Gaussian [Tao, Vu 2015; Kopel 2015]. The key element of the proof is the analysis of several weakly dependent Dyson Brownian motions (DBMs). The conceptual novelty of the real case compared with [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2019] is that the correlation structure of the stochastic differentials in each individual DBM is non-trivial, potentially even jeopardising its well-posedness.

Our results are obtained by using Riemann-Hilbert problems for orthogonal polynomials and integrable operators and they extend previous results of Forrester and Witte \cite{FW} that were obtained by an application of Okamoto's $\tau$-function theory. A key role throughout is played by distinguished solutions to the Painlevé-XXXIV equation.

Cusp Universality for Random Matrices I: Local Law and the Complex Hermitian Case

Abstract:For complex Wigner-type matrices, i.e. Hermitian random matrices with independent, not necessarily identically distributed entries above the diagonal, we show that at any cusp singularity of the limiting eigenvalue distribution the local eigenvalue statistics are universal and form a Pearcey process. Since the density of states typically exhibits only square root or cubic root cusp singularities, our work complements previous results on the bulk and edge universality and it thus completes the resolution of the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta universality conjecture for the last remaining universality type in the complex Hermitian class. Our analysis holds not only for exact cusps, but approximate cusps as well, where an extended Pearcey process emerges. As a main technical ingredient we prove an optimal local law at the cusp for both symmetry classes. This result is also used in the companion paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1811.04055" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1811.04055">arXiv:1811.04055</a>] where the cusp universality for real symmetric Wigner-type matrices is proven.

Complex symmetric, self-dual, and Ginibre random matrices: Analytical results for three classes of bulk and edge statistics

Abstract:Recently, a conjecture about the local bulk statistics of complex eigenvalues has been made based on numerics. It claims that there are only three universality classes, which have all been observed in open chaotic quantum systems. Motivated by these new insights, we compute and compare the expectation values of $k$ pairs of complex conjugate characteristic polynomials in three ensembles of Gaussian non-Hermitian random matrices representative for the three classes: the well-known complex Ginibre ensemble, complex symmetric and complex self-dual matrices. In the Cartan classification scheme of non-Hermitian random matrices they are labelled as class A, AI$^†$ and AII$^†$, respectively. Using the technique of Grassmann variables, we derive explicit expressions for a single pair of expected characteristic polynomials for finite as well as infinite matrix dimension. For the latter we consider the global limit as well as zoom into the edge and the bulk of the spectrum, providing new analytical results for classes AI$^†$ and AII$^†$. For general $k$, we derive the effective Lagrangians corresponding to the non-linear $\sigma$-models in the respective physical systems. Interestingly, they agree for all three ensembles, while the corresponding Goldstone manifolds, over which one has to perform the remaining integrations, are different and equal the three classical compact groups in the bulk. In particular, our analytical results show that these three ensembles have indeed different local bulk and edge spectral statistics, corroborating the conjecture further.

Abstract:The article considers an inhomogeneous Erdős-Rënyi random graph on $\{1,\ldots, N\}$, where an edge is placed between vertices $i$ and $j$ with probability $\varepsilon_N f(i/N,j/N)$, for $i\le j$, the choice being made independent for each pair. The function $f$ is assumed to be non-negative definite, symmetric, bounded and of finite rank $k$. We study the edge of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of such an inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graph under the assumption that $N\varepsilon_N\to \infty$ sufficiently fast. Although the bulk of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix, scaled by $\sqrt{N\varepsilon_N}$, is compactly supported, the $k$-th largest eigenvalue goes to infinity. It turns out that the largest eigenvalue after appropriate scaling and centering converge to a Gaussian law, if the largest eigenvalue of $f$ has multiplicity $1$. If $f$ has $k$ distinct non-zero eigenvalues, then the joint distribution of the $k$ largest eigenvalues converge jointly to a multivariate Gaussian law. The first order behaviour of the eigenvectors is derived as a by-product of the above results. The results complement the homogeneous case derived by Erdős et al.(2013).

To investigate the limiting behavior of the eigenvectors of A(n), a new form of empirical spectral distribution is defined with weights defined by eigenvectors and it is then shown that this has the same limiting spectral distribution as the empirical spectral distribution defined by equal weights. Moreover, if {X-ij} and T-n are either real or complex and some additional moment assumptions are made then linear spectral statistics defined by the eigenvectors of A(n) are proved to have Gaussian limits, which suggests that the eigenvector matrix of A(n) is nearly Haar distributed when T-n is a multiple of the identity matrix, an easy consequence for a Wishart matrix.

Abstract:We consider large non-Hermitian real or complex random matrices $X$ with independent, identically distributed centred entries. We prove that their local eigenvalue statistics near the spectral edge, the unit circle, coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble, i.e. when the matrix elements of $X$ are Gaussian. This result is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the universality of the Tracy-Widom distribution at the spectral edges of the Wigner ensemble.

Abstract:Exploiting the explicit bijection between the density of singular values and the density of eigenvalues for bi-unitarily invariant complex random matrix ensembles of finite matrix size, we aim at finding the induced probability measure on $j$ eigenvalues and $k$ singular values that we coin $j,k$-point correlation measure. We find an expression for the $1,k$-point correlation measure which simplifies drastically when assuming that the singular values follow a polynomial ensemble, yielding a closed formula in terms of the kernel corresponding to the determinantal point process of the singular value statistics. These expressions simplify even further when the singular values are drawn from a Pólya ensemble and extend known results between the eigenvalue and singular value statistics of the corresponding bi-unitarily invariant ensemble.
