Abstract:Recently, a conjecture about the local bulk statistics of complex eigenvalues has been made based on numerics. It claims that there are only three universality classes, which have all been observed in open chaotic quantum systems. Motivated by these new insights, we compute and compare the expectation values of $k$ pairs of complex conjugate characteristic polynomials in three ensembles of Gaussian non-Hermitian random matrices representative for the three classes: the well-known complex Ginibre ensemble, complex symmetric and complex self-dual matrices. In the Cartan classification scheme of non-Hermitian random matrices they are labelled as class A, AI$^†$ and AII$^†$, respectively. Using the technique of Grassmann variables, we derive explicit expressions for a single pair of expected characteristic polynomials for finite as well as infinite matrix dimension. For the latter we consider the global limit as well as zoom into the edge and the bulk of the spectrum, providing new analytical results for classes AI$^†$ and AII$^†$. For general $k$, we derive the effective Lagrangians corresponding to the non-linear $\sigma$-models in the respective physical systems. Interestingly, they agree for all three ensembles, while the corresponding Goldstone manifolds, over which one has to perform the remaining integrations, are different and equal the three classical compact groups in the bulk. In particular, our analytical results show that these three ensembles have indeed different local bulk and edge spectral statistics, corroborating the conjecture further.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve
This paper aims to solve the problem of local spectral statistics of non - Hermitian random matrices in the complex plane. Specifically, the paper explores three main types of non - Hermitian random matrix ensembles: the complex Ginibre ensemble, the complex symmetric matrices ensemble, and the complex self - dual matrices ensemble. These ensembles correspond to class A, class AI†, and class AII† in the Cartan classification respectively.
### Background and motivation
In recent years, based on numerical simulations, a conjecture about the local bulk statistics of complex eigenvalues has been proposed. This conjecture holds that there are exactly three universality classes, which have been observed in open chaotic quantum systems. Inspired by this new insight, the authors calculate and compare the expected values of pairs of complex - conjugate characteristic polynomials in these three ensembles.
### Main contributions
1. **Analytical results**:
- Using Grassmann variables technology, the authors derive explicit expressions for the expected value of a single pair of characteristic polynomials, applicable to both finite and infinite matrix dimensions.
- For infinite matrix dimensions, they consider the global limit as well as local magnifications of the edge and the bulk of the spectrum, providing new analytical results for class AI† and class AII†.
2. **Effective Lagrangian**:
- For the general case of \( k \) pairs of characteristic polynomials, the authors derive the effective Lagrangian of the corresponding nonlinear σ - model. Interestingly, the effective Lagrangians of these three types of ensembles are the same, but the corresponding Goldstone manifolds are different, corresponding to three classical compact groups respectively.
3. **Spectral statistics verification**:
- The analytical results of the authors show that these three types of ensembles do have different local bulk and edge spectral statistics, further confirming the above - mentioned conjecture.
### Formulas and technical details
- **Complex Ginibre ensemble (class A)**:
\[
D_A^N(z, w^*)=\frac{E_N(zw^*)}{E_N(0)}=\frac{e^{zw^*}Q(N + 1, zw^*)}{1}
\]
- **Complex symmetric matrices ensemble (class AI†)**:
\[
D_{AI^\dagger}^N(z, w^*)=\frac{E_N(2zw^*)-\frac{2zw^*}{N + 1}E_{N-1}(2zw^*)}{\frac{N!}{2^N(N + 1)}}
\]
- **Complex self - dual matrices ensemble (class AII†)**:
\[
D_{AII^\dagger}^N(z, w^*)=\frac{\sum_{j = 0}^N\frac{(2j)!}{j!(4zw^*)^{N - j}}E_{2j}(2zw^*)}{\frac{N!}{(2N)!}}
\]
### Conclusion
By analytical methods, the authors confirm that the local spectral statistics of complex symmetric matrices (class AI†) and complex self - dual matrices (class AII†) are different from those of the complex Ginibre ensemble (class A). These results not only verify the previous numerical conjecture but also provide new analytical tools for studying the spectral statistical properties of non - Hermitian random matrices.
