Abstract:Multimodal intelligent transportation systems (M-ITS) encompass a range of transportation services that utilise various modes of transport and incorporate intelligent technologies for enhanced efficiency and user experience. There are several challenges in M-ITS including data integration, Interoperability, scalability, user experience, etc. To address these challenges, such a system requires an adaptive system architecture that enables M-ITS to operate as an integrated ecosystem. In this paper, we provide an adaptive, user-centric, and layered architecture for multimodal transportation systems. The proposed architecture ensures scalability for seamless interactions of various subcomponents, that are often managed by different stakeholders. Concurrently, the data architecture is detailed, covering diverse data sources, advanced analytics, and stringent governance, providing a robust basis for intelligent decision-making. We provide two example use cases of the proposed architecture, showing how the data architecture and the system architecture can be fused and serve multimodal intelligent transport services.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address several challenges faced in Multimodal Intelligent Transportation Systems (M-ITS), including data integration, interoperability, scalability, and user experience. To tackle these challenges, the paper proposes an adaptive system architecture aimed at enabling multimodal transportation systems to operate as an integrated ecosystem. Specifically, the main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Proposes a layered adaptive architecture**: This architecture includes the user layer, perception layer, communication layer, computation layer, data layer, service management layer, and multimodal service layer. These layers interact with each other to provide effective multimodal transportation services. 2. **Detailed data architecture**: Considering the need to handle large amounts of data from multiple sources, the paper also proposes a detailed adaptive multimodal data architecture, covering aspects such as data models, data sources, data integration, storage and organization, analysis and visualization, and data governance. 3. **Use case examples**: Two use case examples are provided to demonstrate how the proposed architecture integrates data architecture and system architecture in practical applications to serve multimodal intelligent transportation services. In this way, the paper aims to create a system capable of seamlessly integrating various modes of transportation, improving overall efficiency and user experience, and ensuring the system's flexibility and scalability to adapt to changing demands and technological advancements.
