Abstract:Let $\Omega$ be a bounded, smooth domain of $\mathbb R^N$, $N\ge 2$. In this paper, we prove some inequalities involving the first Robin eigenvalue of the $p$-laplacian operator. In particular, we prove an upper bound for the first Robin eigenvalue of nonlinear elliptic operators in terms of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue.

Abstract:We obtain shape derivative formulae for the first eigenvalue of the Robin $p$-Laplace operator. This result is used to study the variation of the first eigenvalue with respect to perturbations of the domain. In particular, we prove that for large values of the boundary parameter, the first eigenvalue is monotonic with respect to domain inclusion for smooth domains.

Abstract:We consider the first eigenvalue $\lambda_1$ of the $p$-Laplace operator subject to Robin boundary conditions in the exterior of a compact set. We discuss the conditions for the existence of a variational $\lambda_1$, depending on the boundary parameter, the space dimension, and $p$. Our analysis involves the first $p$-harmonic Steklov eigenvalue in exterior domains. We establish properties of $\lambda_1$ for the exterior of a ball, including general inequalities, the asymptotic behavior as the boundary parameter approaches zero, and a monotonicity result with respect to a special type of domain inclusion. In two dimensions, we generalized to $p\neq 2$ some known shape optimization results.

Abstract:We prove two bounds for the first Robin eigenvalue of the Finsler Laplacian with negative boundary parameter in the planar case. In the constant area problem, we show that the Wulff shape is a maximizer only for values of the boundary parameter, which are close to zero. In the fixed perimeter case, we prove that the Wulff shape is a maximizer of the first eigenvalue for all values of the boundary parameter.

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with homogeneous Robin boundary conditions, when the (positive) Robin parameter is diverging. In this framework, since the convergence of the Robin eigenvalues to the Dirichlet ones is known, we address the question of quantifying the rate of such convergence. More precisely, in this work we identify the proper geometric quantity representing (asymptotically) the first term in the expansion of the eigenvalue variation: it is a novel notion of torsional rigidity. Then, by performing a suitable asymptotic analysis of both such quantity and its minimizer, we prove the first-order expansion of any Robin eigenvalue, in the Dirichlet limit. Moreover, the convergence rate of the corresponding eigenfunctions is obtained as well. We remark that all our spectral estimates are explicit and sharp, and cover both the cases of convergence to simple and multiple Dirichlet eigenvalues.

Abstract:We consider the Laplacian eigenvalues for smooth planar domains with strongly attractive Robin conditions imposed on a part of the boundary and Neumann condition on the remaining boundary. The asymptotics of individual eigenvalues is described in terms of an effective operator on an interval with boundary conditions at the endpoints. For several typical geometries a more precise asymptotics in terms of the boundary curvature is obtained.

Abstract:This paper addresses the geometric optimization problem of the first Robin eigenvalue in exterior domains, specifically the lowest point of the spectrum of the Laplace operator under Robin boundary conditions in the complement of a bounded domain. In contrast to the Laplace operator on bounded domains, the spectrum of this operator is not purely discrete. The discrete nature of the first eigenvalue depends on the parameter of the Robin boundary condition. In two dimensions, D. Krejcirik and V. Lotoreichik show that the ball maximizes the first Robin eigenvalue among all smooth, bounded, simply connected sets with given perimeter or given area, provided the eigenvalue is discrete.

Abstract:In this work we establish eigenvalue inequalities for elliptic differential operators either for Dirichlet or for Robin eigenvalue problems, by using the technique introduced by Alexandrov, Bekelman and Pucci. These inequalities can be extended for fully nonlinear elliptic equations, such as for the Monge-Ampère equation and for Pucci's equations. As an application we establish a lower bound for the $ L^n -$norm of the Laplacian and this bound is sharp, in the sense that, when equality is achieved then a symmetry property is obtained. In addition, we obtain an $ L^{\infty} $ bound for the gradient of solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations.

Abstract:Let $\Omega=\Omega_0\setminus \overline{\Theta}\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, where $\Omega_0$ and $\Theta$ are two open, bounded and convex sets such that $\overline{\Theta}\subset \Omega_0$ and let $\beta<0$ be a given parameter. We consider the eigenvalue problem for the Laplace operator associated to $\Omega$, with Robin boundary condition on $\partial \Omega_0$ and Neumann boundary condition on $\partial \Theta$. In [Paoli-Piscitelli-Trani, ESAIM-COCV '20] it is proved that the spherical shell is the only maximizer for the first Robin-Neumann eigenvalue in the class of domains $\Omega$ with fixed outer perimeter and volume. We establish a quantitative version of the afore-mentioned isoperimetric inequality; the main novelty consists in the introduction of a new type of hybrid asymmetry, that turns out to be the suitable one to treat the different conditions on the outer and internal boundary. Up to our knowledge, in this context, this is the first stability result in which both the outer and the inner boundary are perturbed.

Abstract:We prove two-term spectral asymptotics for the Riesz means of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a Lipschitz domain with Robin boundary conditions. The second term is the same as in the case of Neumann boundary conditions. This is valid for Riesz means of arbitrary positive order. For orders at least one and under additional assumptions on the function determining the boundary conditions we derive leading order asymptotics for the difference between Riesz means of Robin and Neumann eigenvalues.

Abstract:In this note we consider achieving the largest principle eigenvalue of a Robin Laplacian on a bounded domain $\Omega$ by optimizing the Robin parameter function under an integral constraint. The main novelty of our approach lies in establishing a close relation between the problem under consideration and the asymptotic behavior of the Dirichlet heat content of $\Omega$. By using this relation we deduce a two-term asymptotic expansion of the principle eigenvalue and discuss several applications.

Abstract:We prove an improved Pleijel nodal domain theorem for the Robin eigenvalue problem. In particular, we remove the restriction, imposed in previous work, that the Robin parameter be non‐negative. We also improve the upper bound in the statement of the Pleijel theorem. In the particular example of a Euclidean ball, we calculate the explicit value of the Pleijel constant for a generic constant Robin parameter, and we show that it is equal to the Pleijel constant for the Dirichlet Laplacian on a Euclidean ball.
