Abstract:In this paper, we study the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on doubly connected domains when Robin and Dirichlet conditions are imposed on the outer and the inner part of the boundary, respectively. We provide that the spherical shell reaches the maximum of the first eigenvalue of this problem among the domains with fixed measure, outer perimeter and inner $(n-1)^{th}$ quermassintegral.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to find the maximum upper bound of the first Robin - Dirichlet eigenvalue in a doubly - connected domain with a fixed volume, outer perimeter and inner \((n - 1)\)th quermassintegral. Specifically, the author studies the first eigenvalue \(\lambda(\beta,\Omega)\) of the Laplace operator on the doubly - connected region \(\Omega\), when the Robin condition is imposed on the outer boundary and the Dirichlet condition is imposed on the inner boundary. The main result of the paper shows that in this type of doubly - connected domains, the spherical shell \(A_{R_1,R_2}\) reaches the maximum value of \(\lambda(\beta,\Omega)\), where \(A_{R_1,R_2}=B_{R_2}\setminus B_{R_1}\) is the region between two concentric spheres with radii \(R_1\) and \(R_2\) respectively, and satisfies \(|A_{R_1,R_2}| = |\Omega|\), \(P(B_{R_2})=P(\Omega_0)\) and \(W_{n - 1}(B_{R_1})=W_{n - 1}(\Theta)\).
The core of the paper lies in proving this result through the so - called "inner parallel method". In addition, the author also studies the relationship between the first Robin - Dirichlet eigenvalue and the first Dirichlet - Dirichlet eigenvalue when \(\beta\) tends to infinity, that is, \(\lim_{\beta\rightarrow+\infty}\lambda(\beta,\Omega)=\lambda_{DD}(\Omega)\). This further extends Hersch's result on \(\lambda_{DD}(\Omega)\) in the planar case to arbitrary dimensions and a broader class of doubly - connected domains.
In summary, the main contribution of this paper is to provide an optimal upper bound for the first Robin - Dirichlet eigenvalue on doubly - connected domains, and to verify the rationality of the spherical shell as the optimal shape through strict mathematical analysis.
