Abstract:We construct a hereditary class of triangle-free graphs with unbounded chromatic number, in which every non-trivial graph either contains a pair of non-adjacent twins or has an edgeless vertex cutset of size at most two. This answers in the negative a question of Chudnovsky, Penev, Scott, and Trotignon. The class is the hereditary closure of a family of (triangle-free) twincut graphs $G_1, G_2, \ldots$ such that $G_k$ has chromatic number $k$. We also show that every twincut graph is edge-critical.

Abstract:Elementary graphs are graphs whose edges can be colored using two colors in such a way that the edges in any induced $P_3$ get distinct colors. They constitute a subclass of the class of claw-free perfect graphs. In this paper, we show that for any elementary graph, its list chromatic number and chromatic number are equal.

Abstract:Even-hole-free graphs are a graph class of much interest. Foley et al. [Graphs Comb. 36(1): 125-138 (2020)] have recently studied $(4K_1, C_4, C_6)$-free graphs, which form a subclass of even-hole-free graphs. Specifically, Foley et al. have shown an algorithm for coloring these graphs via bounded clique-width if they contain a $C_7$. In this note, we give a simpler and much faster algorithm via a more restrictive graph parameter, neighborhood diversity.

Abstract:Finite graphs that have a common chromatic polynomial have the same number of regular $n$-colorings. A natural question is whether there exists a natural bijection between regular $n$-colorings. We address this question using a functorial formulation. Let $G$ be a simple graph. Then for each set $X$ we can associate a set of $X$-colorings. This defines a functor, "chromatic functor" from the category of sets with injections to itself. The first main result verifies that two finite graphs determine isomorphic chromatic functors if and only if they have the same chromatic polynomial. Chromatic functors can be defined for arbitrary, possibly infinite, graphs. This fact enables us to investigate functorial chromatic theory for infinite graphs. We prove that chromatic functors satisfy the Cantor-Bernstein-Schr\"oder property. We also prove that countable connected trees determine isomorphic chromatic functors. Finally, we present a pair of infinite graphs that determine non-isomorphic chromatic functors.

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

A Simple Construction of Tournaments with Finite and Uncountable Dichromatic Number

Abstract:The dichromatic number $\chi(\vec{G})$ of a digraph $\vec{G}$ is the minimum number of colors needed to color the vertices $V(\vec{G})$ in such a way that no monochromatic directed cycle is obtained. In this note, for any $k\in \mathbb{N}$, we give a simple construction of tournaments with dichromatic number exactly equal to $k$. The proofs are based on a combinatorial lemma on partitioning a checkerboard which may be of independent interest. We also generalize our finite construction to give an elementary construction of a complete digraph of cardinality equal to the cardinality of $\mathbb{R}$ and having an uncountable dichromatic number. Furthermore, we also construct an oriented balanced complete $n$-partite graph $\vec{K}^{(m)}_n$, such that the minimum number of colors needed to color its vertices such that there is no monochromatic directed triangle is greater than or equal to $nm/(n+2m-2)$.

Abstract:A balanced edge-coloring of the complete graph is an edge-coloring such that every vertex is incident to each color the same number of times. In this short note, we present a construction of a balanced edge-coloring with six colors of the complete graph on $n=13^k$ vertices, for every positive integer $k$, with no rainbow $K_4$. This solves a problem by Erdős and Tuza.

Abstract:We work with simple graphs in ZF (Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory without the Axiom of Choice (AC)) and assume that the sets of colors can be either well-orderable or non-well-orderable to prove that the following statements are equivalent to Kőnig Lemma: (a) Any infinite locally finite connected graph G such that the minimum degree of G is greater than k, has a chromatic number for any fixed integer k greater than or equal to 2. (b) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a chromatic index. (c) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a distinguishing number. (d) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a distinguishing index. Our results strengthen some results of Stawiski from a recent paper on the role of the Axiom of Choice in proper and distinguishing colorings since he assumed that the sets of colors can be well-ordered. We also formulate new conditions for the existence of irreducible proper coloring, minimal edge cover, maximal matching, and minimal dominating set in connected bipartite graphs and locally finite connected graphs, which are either equivalent to AC or Kőnig Lemma. Moreover, we show that if the Axiom of Choice for families of 2 element sets holds, then the Shelah--Soifer graph has a minimal dominating set.

Abstract:Unigraphs are graphs identifiable up to isomorphism from their degree sequences. Given a class $\mathcal{A}$ of graphs, we define the class of $\mathcal{A}$-unigraphs to be graphs identifiable from degree sequence and membership in $\mathcal{A}$. While these classes are often not hereditary, we provide characterizations of the largest hereditary subclass contained in the bipartite-unigraphs, the $k$-partite unigraphs, the perfect-unigraphs, and the chordal-unigraphs. We also characterize the largest hereditary subclass contained in the bipartite-unigraphs in terms of structure, degree sequence, and a partial order on degree sequences due to Rao. Lastly, we show that all unigraphs $G$ satisfy the bound $\chi(G) \le \omega(G) + 1$ and are hence apex-perfect graphs.

Uniquely Distinguishing Colorable Graphs

Abstract:A graph is called uniquely distinguishing colorable if there is only one partition of vertices of the graph that forms distinguishing coloring with the smallest possible colors. In this paper, we study the unique colorability of the distinguishing coloring of a graph and its applications in computing the distinguishing chromatic number of disconnected graphs. We introduce two families of uniquely distinguishing colorable graphs, namely type 1 and type 2, and show that every disconnected uniquely distinguishing colorable graph is the union of two isomorphic graphs of type 2. We obtain some results on bipartite uniquely distinguishing colorable graphs and show that any uniquely distinguishing $n$-colorable tree with $ n \geq 3$ is a star graph. For a connected graph $G$, we prove that $\chi_D(G\cup G)=\chi_D(G)+1$ if and only if $G$ is uniquely distinguishing colorable of type 1. Also, a characterization of all graphs $G$ of order $n$ with the property that $\chi_{D}(G\cup G) = \chi_{D}(G) = k$, where $k=n-2, n-1, n$, is given in this paper. Moreover, we determine all graphs $G$ of order $n$ with the property that $\chi_{D}(G\cup G) = \chi_{D}(G)+1 = \ell$, where $\ell=n-1, n, n+1$. Finally, we investigate the family of connected graphs $G$ with $\chi_{D}(G\cup G) = \chi_{D}(G)+1 = 3$.

Abstract:Fernández-Bretón, Sarmiento and Vera showed that whenever a direct sum of sufficiently many copies of ${\mathbb Z}_4$, the cyclic group of order 4, is countably coloured there are arbitrarily large finite sets $X$ whose sumsets $X+X$ are monochromatic. They asked if the elements of order 4 are necessary, in the following strong sense: if $G$ is an abelian group having no elements of order 4, is it always the case there there is a countable colouring of $G$ for which there is not even a monochromatic sumset $X+X$ with $X$ of size 2? Our aim in this short note is to show that this is indeed the case.

Abstract:For a graph $G$, the $k$-colouring graph of $G$ has vertices corresponding to proper $k$-colourings of $G$ and edges between colourings that differ at a single vertex. The graph supports the Glauber dynamics Markov chain for $k$-colourings, and has been extensively studied from both extremal and probabilistic perspectives. In this note, we show that for every graph $G$, there exists $k$ such that $G$ is uniquely determined by its $k$-colouring graph, confirming two conjectures of Asgarli, Krehbiel, Levinson and Russell. We further show that no finite family of generalised chromatic polynomials for $G$, which encode induced subgraph counts of its colouring graphs, uniquely determine $G$.

Chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs of abelian groups: Cases of small dimension and rank

Abstract:A connected Cayley graph on an abelian group with a finite generating set $S$ can be represented by its Heuberger matrix, i.e., an integer matrix whose columns generate the group of relations between members of $S$. In a companion article, the authors lay the foundation for the use of Heuberger matrices to study chromatic numbers of abelian Cayley graphs. We call the number of rows in the Heuberger matrix the dimension, and the number of columns the rank. In this paper, we give precise numerical conditions that completely determine the chromatic number in all cases with dimension $1$; with rank $1$; and with dimension $\leq 3$ and rank $\leq 2$. For such a graph without loops, we show that it is $4$-colorable if and only if it does not contain a $5$-clique, and it is $3$-colorable if and only if it contains neither a diamond lanyard nor a $C_{13}(1,5)$, both of which we define herein. In a separate companion article, we show that we recover Zhu's theorem on the chromatic number of $6$-valent integer distance graphs as a special case of our theorem for dimension $3$ and rank $2$.

Abstract:We first consider the class K of graphs on a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space with continuous chromatic number at least three. We provide a concrete basis of size continuum for K made up of countable graphs, comparing them with the quasi-order associated with injective continuous homomorphisms. We prove that the size of such a basis is sharp, using odometers. However, using odometers again, we prove that there is no antichain basis in K, and provide infinite descending chains in K. Our method implies that the equivalence relation of flip conjugacy of minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor space is Borel reducible to the equivalence relation associated with our quasi-order. We also prove that there is no antichain basis in the class of graphs on a zero-dimensional Polish space with continuous chromatic number at least three. We study the graphs induced by a continuous function, and show that any basis for the class of graphs induced by a homeomorphism of a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space with continuous chromatic number at least three must have size continuum, using odometers or subshifts.

Achromatic colorings of polarity graphs

Abstract:A complete partition of a graph $G$ is a partition of the vertex set such that there is at least one edge between any two parts. The largest $r$ such that $G$ has a complete partition into $r$ parts, each of which is an independent set, is the achromatic number of $G$. We determine the achromatic number of polarity graphs coming from generalized polygons. Our colorings of a family of unitary polarity graphs are used to solve a problem of Axenovich and Martin on complete partitions of $C_4$-free graphs. Furthermore, these colorings prove that there are sequences of graphs which are optimally complete and have unbounded degree, a problem that had been studied for the sequence of hypercubes independently by Roichman, and Ahlswede, Bezrukov, Blokhuis, Metsch, and Moorhouse.

Note on polychromatic coloring of hereditary hypergraph families

Abstract:We exhibit a 5-uniform hypergraph that has no polychromatic 3-coloring, but all its restricted subhypergraphs with edges of size at least 3 are 2-colorable. This disproves a bold conjecture of Keszegh and the author, and can be considered as the first step to understand polychromatic colorings of hereditary hypergraph families better since the seminal work of Berge. We also show that our method cannot give hypergraphs of arbitrary high uniformity, and mention some connections to panchromatic colorings.

Abstract:Proper vertex colorings of a graph are related to its boundary map, also called its signed vertex-edge incidence matrix. The vertex Laplacian of a graph, a natural extension of the boundary map, leads us to introduce nowhere-harmonic colorings and analogues of the chromatic polynomial and Stanley's theorem relating negative evaluations of the chromatic polynomial to acyclic orientations. Further, we discuss some examples demonstrating that nowhere-harmonic colorings are more complicated from an enumerative perspective than proper colorings.

Abstract:Constructing the graphs with some specific properties is an important and interesting problem in the field of graph theory. A graph G is uniquely k-colorable if the chromatic number of G is k and G has only one k-coloring up to permutation of the colors. In this paper, we give three methods for recursively constructing uniquely 3-colorable graphs. Moreover, we give a simple counterexample on 16 vertices to S J Xu's conjecture concerning uniquely 3-colorable graphs without triangles, and based on this graph we construct an infinite family of uniquely 3-colorable, 4-regular and triangle-free graphs by our construction methods.
