Abstract:Breakthrough work of Bourgain, Demeter, and Guth recently established that decoupling inequalities can prove powerful results on counting integral solutions to systems of Diophantine equations. In this note we demonstrate that in appropriate situations this implication can also be reversed. As a first example, we observe that a count for the number of integral solutions to a system of Diophantine equations implies a discrete decoupling inequality. Second, in our main result we prove an $L^{2n}$ square function estimate (which implies a corresponding decoupling estimate) for the extension operator associated to a non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb {R}^n$. The proof is via a combinatorial argument that builds on the idea that if $\gamma $ is a non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb {R}^n$, then as long as $x_1,\ldots , x_{2n}$ are chosen from a sufficiently well-separated set, then $ \gamma (x_1)+\cdots +\gamma (x_n) = \gamma (x_{n+1}) + \cdots + \gamma (x_{2n}) $ essentially only admits solutions in which $x_1,\ldots ,x_n$ is a permutation of $x_{n+1},\ldots , x_{2n}$.

Abstract:We prove sharp $\ell^2$-decoupling inequalities for non-degenerate complex curves via the bilinear argument due to Guo--Li--Yung--Zorin-Kranich. Secondly, quantifying the iteration in the cubic case, we obtain a logarithmic refinement of the decoupling inequality for the cubic moment curve.

Abstract:We put forward a conical principle and a degeneracy locating principle of decoupling. The former generalises the Pramanik-Seeger argument used in the proof of decoupling for the light cone. The latter locates the degenerate part of a manifold and effectively reduces the decoupling problem to two extremes: non-degenerate case and totally degenerate case. Both principles aim to provide a new algebraic approach of reducing decoupling for new manifolds to decoupling for known manifolds.

Abstract:A {\em maximal inequality} seeks to estimate $\mathbb{E}\max_i X_i$ in terms of properties of the $X_i$. When the latter are independent, the union bound (in its various guises) can yield tight upper bounds. If, however, the $X_i$ are strongly dependent, the estimates provided by the union bound will be rather loose. In this note, we show that for non-negative random variables, pairwise independence suffices for the maximal inequality to behave comparably to its independent version. The condition of pairwise independence may be relaxed to a kind of negative dependence, and even the latter admits violations -- provided these are properly quantified.

Abstract:For each $d\geq 0$, we prove decoupling inequalities in $\mathbb R^3$ for the graphs of all bivariate polynomials of degree at most $d$ with bounded coefficients, with the decoupling constant depending uniformly in $d$ but not the coefficients of each individual polynomial. As a consequence, we prove a decoupling inequality for (a compact piece of) every smooth surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which in particular solves a conjecture of Bourgain, Demeter and Kemp.

Abstract:We develop a theory of continuous decoupling with bounded controls from a geometric perspective. Continuous decoupling with bounded controls can accomplish the same decoupling effect as the bang-bang control while using realistic control resources and it is robust against systematic implementation errors. We show that the decoupling condition within this framework is equivalent to average out error vectors whose trajectories are determined by the control Hamiltonian. The decoupling pulses can be intuitively designed once the structure function of the corresponding SU(n) is known and is represented from the geometric perspective. Several examples are given to illustrate the basic idea. From the physical implementation point of view we argue that the efficiency of the decoupling is determined not by the order of the decoupling group but by the minimal time required to finish a decoupling cycle.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain a decoupling feature of the random interlacements process $\mathcal{I}^u \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$, at level $u$, $d\geq 3$. More precisely, we show that the trace of the random interlacements process on two disjoint finite sets, $\textsf{F}$ and its translated $\textsf{F}+x$, can be coupled with high probability of success, when $\|x\|$ is large, with the trace of a process of independent excursions, which we call the noodle soup process. As a consequence, we obtain an upper bound on the covariance between two $[0,1]$-valued functions depending on the configuration of the random interlacements on $\textsf{F}$ and $\textsf{F}+x$, respectively. This improves a previous bound obtained by Sznitman in [12].

Abstract:We develop an existence, uniqueness and regularity theory for general multidimensional strongly coupled FBSDE using so called decoupling fields. We begin with a local result and extend it to a global theory via concatenation. The cornerstone of the global theory is the so called maximal interval which is, roughly speaking, the largest interval on which reasonable solutions exist. A method to verify that the maximal interval is the whole interval, for problems in which this is conjectured, is proposed. As part of our study of the regularity of solutions constructed we show variational differentiability under Lipschitz assumptions. Extra emphasis is put on the more special Markovian case in which assumptions on the Lipschitz continuity for the FBSDE can be weakened to local ones, and additional regularity properties emerge.

The Cheeger Inequality and Coboundary Expansion: Beyond Constant Coefficients

Abstract:The Cheeger constant of a graph, or equivalently its coboundary expansion, quantifies the expansion of the graph. This notion assumes an implicit choice of a coefficient group, namely, $\mathbb{F}_2$. In this paper, we study Cheeger-type inequalities for graphs endowed with a generalized coefficient group, called a sheaf; this is motivated by applications to locally testable codes. We prove that a graph is a good spectral expander if and only if it has good coboundary expansion relative to any (resp. some) constant sheaf, equivalently, relative to any `ordinary' coefficient group. We moreover show that sheaves that are close to being constant in a well-defined sense are also good coboundary expanders, provided that their underlying graph is an expander, thus giving the first example of good coboundary expansion in non-cosntant sheaves. By contrast, for general sheaves on graphs, it is impossible to relate the expansion of the graph and the coboundary expansion of the sheaf. In addition, we show that the normalized second eigenvalue of the (weighted) graph underlying a $q$-thick $d$-dimensional spherical building is $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{q}-3d})$ if $q>9d^2$, and plug this into our results about coboundary expansion of sheaves to get explicit bounds on the coboundary expansion in terms of $q$ and $d$. It approaches a constant as $q$ grows. Along the way, we prove a new version of the Expander Mixing Lemma applying to $r$-partite weighted graphs.

Abstract:We prove a new concentration result for non-catalytic decoupling by showing that, for suitably large , applying a unitary chosen uniformly at random from an approximate -design on a quantum system followed by a fixed quantum operation almost decouples, with high probability, the given system from another reference system to which it may initially have been correlated. Earlier works either did not obtain high decoupling probability, or used provably inefficient unitaries, or required catalytic entanglement for decoupling. In contrast, our approximate unitary designs always guarantee decoupling with exponentially high probability and, under certain conditions, lead to computationally efficient unitaries. As a result we conclude that, under suitable conditions, efficiently implementable approximate unitary designs achieve relative thermalisation in quantum thermodynamics with exponentially high probability. We also show the scrambling property of black hole, when the black hole evolution is according to pseudorandom approximate unitary -design, as opposed to the Haar random evolution considered earlier by Hayden-Preskill.

Integrability of Conformal Loop Ensemble: Imaginary DOZZ Formula and Beyond

Abstract:The scaling limit of the probability that $n$ points are on the same cluster for 2D critical percolation is believed to be governed by a conformal field theory (CFT). Although this is not fully understood, Delfino and Viti (2010) made a remarkable prediction on the exact value of a properly normalized three-point probability. It is expressed in terms of the imaginary DOZZ formula of Schomerus, Zamolodchikov and Kostov-Petkova, which extends the structure constants of minimal model CFTs to continuous parameters. Later, similar conjectures were made for scaling limits of random cluster models and O$(n)$ loop models, representing certain three-point observables in terms of the imaginary DOZZ formula. Since the scaling limits of these models can be described by the conformal loop ensemble (CLE), such conjectures can be formulated as exact statements on CLE observables. In this paper, we prove Delfino and Viti's conjecture on percolation as well as a conjecture of Ikhlef, Jacobsen and Saleur (2015) on the nesting loop statistics of CLE. Our proof is based on the coupling between CLE and Liouville quantum gravity on the sphere, and is inspired by the fact that after reparametrization, the imaginary DOZZ formula is the reciprocal of the three-point function of Liouville CFT. Recently, Nivesvivat, Jacobsen and Ribault systematically studied a CFT with a large class of CLE observables as its correlation functions, including the ones from these two conjectures. We believe that our framework admits sufficient flexibility to exactly solve the three-point functions for CLE observables with natural geometric interpretations, including those from this CFT. As a demonstration, we solve the case corresponding to three points lying on the same loop, where the answer is a variant of the imaginary DOZZ formula.

Abstract:We propose to study the restriction conjecture using decoupling theorems and two-ends Furstenberg inequalities. Specifically, we pose a two-ends Furstenberg conjecture, which implies the restriction conjecture. As evidence, we prove this conjecture in the plane by using the Furstenberg set estimate. Moreover, we use this planar result to prove a restriction estimate for $p>22/7$ in three dimensions, which implies Wolff's $5/2$-hairbrush bound for Kakeya sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Our approach also makes improvements for the restriction conjecture in higher dimensions.

Coboundary and cosystolic expansion without dependence on dimension or degree

Abstract:We give new bounds on the cosystolic expansion constants of several families of high dimensional expanders, and the known coboundary expansion constants of order complexes of homogeneous geometric lattices, including the spherical building of $SL_n(F_q)$. The improvement applies to the high dimensional expanders constructed by Lubotzky, Samuels and Vishne, and by Kaufman and Oppenheim. Our new expansion constants do not depend on the degree of the complex nor on its dimension, nor on the group of coefficients. This implies improved bounds on Gromov's topological overlap constant, and on Dinur and Meshulam's cover stability, which may have applications for agreement testing. In comparison, existing bounds decay exponentially with the ambient dimension (for spherical buildings) and in addition decay linearly with the degree (for all known bounded-degree high dimensional expanders). Our results are based on several new techniques: * We develop a new "color-restriction" technique which enables proving dimension-free expansion by restricting a multi-partite complex to small random subsets of its color classes. * We give a new "spectral" proof for Evra and Kaufman's local-to-global theorem, deriving better bounds and getting rid of the dependence on the degree. This theorem bounds the cosystolic expansion of a complex using coboundary expansion and spectral expansion of the links. * We derive absolute bounds on the coboundary expansion of the spherical building (and any order complex of a homogeneous geometric lattice) by constructing a novel family of very short cones.

Abstract:We prove a small cap decoupling theorem for the parabola over a general non-Archimedean local field for which $2\neq 0$. We obtain polylogarithmic dependence on the scale parameter $R$ and polynomial dependence in the residue prime, except for the prime 2 for which the polynomial depends on degree. Abstract:Background: Recent models of genome-proteome evolution have shown that some of the key traits displayed by the global structure of cellular networks might be a natural result of a duplication-diversification (DD) process. One of the consequences of such evolution is the emergence of a small world architecture together with a scale-free distribution of interactions. Here we show that the domain of parameter space were such structure emerges is related to a phase transition phenomenon. At this transition point, modular architecture spontaneously emerges as a byproduct of the DD process. Results: Although the DD models lack any functionality and are thus free from meeting functional constraints, they show the observed features displayed by the real proteome maps when tuned close to a sharp transition point separating a highly connected graph from a disconnected system. Close to such boundary, the maps are shown to display scale-free hierarchical organization, behave as small worlds and exhibit modularity. Conclusions: It is conjectured that natural selection tuned the average connectivity in such a way that the network reaches a sparse graph of connections. One consequence of such scenario is that the scaling laws and the essential ingredients for building a modular net emerge for free close to such transition.

Abstract:We introduce new function spaces $\mathcal{L}_{W,s}^{q,p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ that yield a natural reformulation of the $\ell^{q}L^{p}$ decoupling inequalities for the sphere and the light cone. These spaces are invariant under the Euclidean half-wave propagators, but not under all Fourier integral operators unless $p=q$, in which case they coincide with the Hardy spaces for Fourier integral operators. We use these spaces to obtain improvements of the classical fractional integration theorem and local smoothing estimates.
