Abstract:Decoupling is a recent development in Fourier analysis, which has applications in harmonic analysis, PDE, and number theory. We survey some applications of decoupling and some of the ideas in the proof. This survey is aimed at a general mathematical audience. It is based on my 2022 ICM talk.

Abstract:AbstractA new approximate decoupling method for linear time‐invariant systems based on the concept of energetic diagonal dominance is proposed in this paper. It is a time‐domain approach and the design procedure is simpler than that of frequency‐domain approach. The conditions for the energetic decoupling with simultaneous stabilizability are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). It is very convenient to solve this problem using the powerful LMI toolbox. The results are derived first for proper systems with nonsingular D, and then extended to strictly proper systems. Illustrative examples demonstrate that this method has satisfactory decoupling performance.

Abstract:The goal of this expository paper is to provide an introduction to decoupling by working in the simpler setting of decoupling for the parabola over $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Over $\mathbb{Q}_p$, commonly used heuristics in decoupling are significantly easier to make rigorous over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ than over $\mathbb{R}$ and such decoupling theorems over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ are still strong enough to derive interesting number theoretic conclusions.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of decoupling for operators, and prove an equivalence between classical $\ell^qL^p$ decoupling for functions and $\ell^q\mathcal{S}^p$ decoupling for operators on bounded sets in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$. We also show that the equivalence only depends on the bounded set $\Omega$, and not the values of $p,q$ nor the partition of $\Omega$.

Decoupling technology for systems of evolutionary equations

Abstract:Numerical methods of approximate solution of the Cauchy problem for coupled systems of evolution equations are considered. Separating simpler subproblems for individual components of the solution achieves simplification of the problem at a new level in time. The decoupling method, a significant approach to simplifying the problem, is based on the decomposition of the problem's operator matrix. The approximate solution is constructed based on the linear composition of solutions to auxiliary problems. The paper investigates decoupling variants based on extracting the diagonal part of the operator matrix and the lower and upper triangular submatrices. The study introduces a new decomposition approach, which involves splitting the operator matrix into rows and columns. The composition stage utilizes various variants of splitting schemes, showcasing the versatility of the approach. In additive operator-difference schemes, we can distinguish explicit-implicit schemes, factorized schemes for two-component splitting, and regularized schemes for general multicomponent splitting. The study of stability of two- and three-level decoupling composition schemes is carried out using the theory of stability (correctness) of operator-difference schemes for finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. The theoretical results of the decoupling technique for systems of evolution equations are illustrated on a test two-dimensional problem for a coupled system of two diffusion equations with inhomogeneous self- and cross-diffusion coefficients.

Abstract:We identify a new way to divide the $\delta$-neighborhood of surfaces $\mathcal{M}\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ into a finitely-overlapping collection of rectangular boxes $S$. We obtain a sharp $(l^2,L^p)$ decoupling estimate using this decomposition, for the sharp range of exponents $2\leq p\leq 4$. Our decoupling inequality leads to new exponential sum estimates where the frequencies lie on surfaces which do not contain a line.

Abstract:We develop a unified approach for establishing rates of decay for the Fourier transform of a wide class of dynamically defined measures. Among the key features of the method is the systematic use of the $L^2$-flattening theorem obtained in \cite{Khalil-Mixing}, coupled with non-concentration estimates for the derivatives of the underlying dynamical system. This method yields polylogarithmic Fourier decay for Diophantine self-similar measures, and polynomial decay for Patterson-Sullivan measures of convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds, Gibbs measures associated to non-integrable $C^2$ conformal systems, as well as stationary measures for carpet-like non-conformal iterated function systems. Applications include essential spectral gaps on convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds, fractal uncertainty principles, and equidistribution properties of typical vectors in fractal sets.

Abstract:We show trilinear Strichartz estimates in one and two dimensions on frequency-dependent time intervals. These improve on the corresponding linear estimates of periodic solutions to the Schrödinger equation. The proof combines decoupling iterations with bilinear short-time Strichartz estimates. Secondly, we use decoupling to show new linear Strichartz estimates on frequency dependent time intervals. We apply these in case of the Airy propagator to obtain the sharp Sobolev regularity for the existence of solutions to the modified Korteweg–de Vries equation.

Abstract:We develop an existence, uniqueness and regularity theory for general multidimensional strongly coupled FBSDE using so called decoupling fields. We begin with a local result and extend it to a global theory via concatenation. The cornerstone of the global theory is the so called maximal interval which is, roughly speaking, the largest interval on which reasonable solutions exist. A method to verify that the maximal interval is the whole interval, for problems in which this is conjectured, is proposed. As part of our study of the regularity of solutions constructed we show variational differentiability under Lipschitz assumptions. Extra emphasis is put on the more special Markovian case in which assumptions on the Lipschitz continuity for the FBSDE can be weakened to local ones, and additional regularity properties emerge.

A recent breakthrough involves the use of a classical result from Fourier analysis, the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality, in the context of learning low-degree Boolean functions. In these lecture notes, we explore this line of research and discuss recent progress in discrete quantum systems and classical Fourier analysis.

Abstract:Breakthrough work of Bourgain, Demeter, and Guth recently established that decoupling inequalities can prove powerful results on counting integral solutions to systems of Diophantine equations. In this note we demonstrate that in appropriate situations this implication can also be reversed. As a first example, we observe that a count for the number of integral solutions to a system of Diophantine equations implies a discrete decoupling inequality. Second, in our main result we prove an $L^{2n}$ square function estimate (which implies a corresponding decoupling estimate) for the extension operator associated to a non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb {R}^n$. The proof is via a combinatorial argument that builds on the idea that if $\gamma $ is a non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb {R}^n$, then as long as $x_1,\ldots , x_{2n}$ are chosen from a sufficiently well-separated set, then $ \gamma (x_1)+\cdots +\gamma (x_n) = \gamma (x_{n+1}) + \cdots + \gamma (x_{2n}) $ essentially only admits solutions in which $x_1,\ldots ,x_n$ is a permutation of $x_{n+1},\ldots , x_{2n}$.
Decoupling for smooth surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$

Abstract:For each $d\geq 0$, we prove decoupling inequalities in $\mathbb R^3$ for the graphs of all bivariate polynomials of degree at most $d$ with bounded coefficients, with the decoupling constant depending uniformly in $d$ but not the coefficients of each individual polynomial. As a consequence, we prove a decoupling inequality for (a compact piece of) every smooth surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which in particular solves a conjecture of Bourgain, Demeter and Kemp.

Abstract:We introduce new function spaces $\mathcal{L}_{W,s}^{q,p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ that yield a natural reformulation of the $\ell^{q}L^{p}$ decoupling inequalities for the sphere and the light cone. These spaces are invariant under the Euclidean half-wave propagators, but not under all Fourier integral operators unless $p=q$, in which case they coincide with the Hardy spaces for Fourier integral operators. We use these spaces to obtain improvements of the classical fractional integration theorem and local smoothing estimates.

Abstract:Building on recent advances in studying the cohomological properties of Feynman integrals, we apply intersection theory to the computation of Fourier integrals. We discuss applications pertinent to gravitational bremsstrahlung and deep inelastic scattering in the saturation regime. After identifying the bases of master integrals, the latter are evaluated by means of the differential equation method. Decoupling Techniques for Coupled PDE Models in Fluid Dynamics

Abstract:We review decoupling techniques for coupled PDE models in fluid dynamics. In particular, we are interested in the coupled models for fluid flow interacting with porous media flow and the fluid structure interaction (FSI) models. For coupled models for fluid flow interacting with porous media flow, we present decoupled preconditioning techniques, two-level and multilevel methods, Newton-type linearization-based two-level and multilevel algorithms, and partitioned time-stepping methods. The main theory and some numerical experiments are given to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of these methods. For the FSI models, partitioned time-stepping algorithms and a multirate time-stepping algorithm are carefully studied and analyzed. Numerical experiments are presented to highlight the advantages of these methods.
