Abstract:Recently, a non-linear model of viscoelasticity based on Rational Extended Thermodynamics was proposed in Ruggeri (2024). This theory extends the evolution of the viscous stress beyond the linear framework of the Maxwell model to the non-linear realm, provided that the viscous energy function is given. This work aims at establishing a possible constitutive law for the viscous energy such that the relaxation modulus of the fractional Maxwell model with order α∈(1/2,1] is contained within the solutions of the (non-linear) relaxation experiment. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of this coincident solution are discussed, together with a numerical evaluation of the viscous energy associated with the nonlinear model.

Fractional Viscoelastic Models with Non-Singular Kernels

Abstract:New definitions of fractional derivative with non-singular kernels are proposed recently. In the present paper, we apply the classical and new definitions of fractional derivative to four fractional viscoelastic models, namely, fractional Maxwell model, fractional Kelvin-Voigt model, fractional Zener model and fractional Poynting-Thomson model. For each fractional viscoelastic model, the stress relaxation modulus, creep compliance and dynamic modulus are derived analytically under the classical and new fractional derivative definitions. The performance of these models under different fractional derivative definitions is further compared. The results show that the fractional Zener model and fractional Poynting-Thomson model are equivalent in all conditions. Compared with the classical fractional derivative definition with a power function kernel, the fractional derivative definition with a logarithmic function kernel can be used to describe the ultraslow creep and relaxation behaviors. However, the performance of fractional Maxwell model with the exponential function kernel is close to that of integer-order Maxwell model. Fractional Maxwell model and fractional Zener model with the Mittag-Leffler function kernel do not provide accurate descriptions of the stress relaxation modulus at shortest time and the storage modulus at highest frequency. Thus, specific modification is needed when applying the new definitions of fractional derivative to viscoelasticity.

Abstract:In the one-dimensional isothermal case, we introduce a simple model of nonlinear viscoelasticity within the Rational Extended Thermodynamics (RET) framework. The differential system is determined by the universal principles of RET, exhibiting symmetric hyperbolic form and ensuring the existence of smooth solutions for appropriately small initial data. In the linear case, the equation for viscous stress reduces to the well-known Maxwell model, thereby representing a plausible nonlinear extension of the Maxwell-type model. The total stress instead satisfies a non-linear Zener model.

Abstract:Stress relaxation and damped oscillation of viscoelastic soft materials are characterized with memory effect which is very difficult to describe with the classical integer-order derivative equation models. This study introduced novel relaxation-oscillation models for soft materials by using positive fractional derivative and fractal derivative and investigated their properties against the corresponding fractional derivative model through analytic and numerical solutions. In the relaxation process, the stretched exponential stress relaxation of the fractal derivative model is found to decay fastest, while the slowest decay is with the positive fractional derivative model. In the oscillation process, the fractional and the positive fractional derivative models are observed frequency-dependent dissipative oscillation. We also found that the fractional derivative model is more dissipative than the positive fractional derivative one.

Mechanics of Time-Dependent Materials

Abstract:To characterize the visco–elasto-plastic behavior of metals and alloys we propose a new constitutive equation based on a time–space fractional derivative. The rheological representative of the model can be analogous to that of the Bingham–Maxwell model, while the dashpot element and sliding friction element are replaced by the corresponding fractional elements. The model is applied to describe the constant strain rate, stress relaxation and creep tests of different metals and alloys. The results suggest that the proposed simple model can describe the main characteristics of the experimental observations. More importantly, the model can also provide more accurate predictions than the classic Bingham–Maxwell model and the Bingham–Norton model.

Abstract:Understanding the structural relaxation plays an essential role in the application of amorphous solids. Most of the current models use the fictive temperature concept to describe structural relaxation. The fictive temperature is assumed to evolve with temperature through the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watt (KWW) function. In this work, we use the Mittag-Leffler (ML) function to replace the KWW function. We will demonstrate the similarity and difference of the two models. Both the continuous model in the integral form and the discrete model with multiple relaxation processes in differential form are presented. We provide a numerical algorithm to obtain the relaxation spectra of the discrete models. It is shown that the spectrum of the model with the KWW kernel is asymmetric while the spectrum of the model with the ML kernel is symmetric. We further demonstrate that the continuous model and the discrete model are numerically equivalent. The performances of the models with the KWW kernel and the ML kernel are compared in details. It is showed that both models can capture the same trend on the effects of the cooling rate and annealing time on the enthalpy response. However, the magnitude and location of the enthalpy overshoot predicted by the two models are different. Thus, this work provides another choice for the relaxation function.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a formulation of fractional viscoelasticity of nonlinear time-dependent responses of isotropic materials undergoing small deformation gradients. The model considers the separation of functions of the time-dependent kernel and stress-dependent nonlinear elastic strain measure. The Riemann–Liouville fractional integral is considered for the time-dependent kernel function. Characterization of material parameters in the fractional viscoelasticity model is presented using experimental data on a polymer. The nonuniqueness of the calibrated material parameters from the fractional power terms is discussed. A numerical method is also presented to solve the nonlinear fractional viscoelastic constitutive model. The response characteristics and convergence behaviors of the presented nonlinear fractional viscoelastic constitutive model are compared to the corresponding nonlinear model derived based on classical viscoelasticity. The presented nonlinear viscoelastic fractional model is shown to be capable of describing multiaxial responses of polymers under various loading histories. The fractional model has significantly fewer material parameters, which can offer an advantage when a relatively long-term response of materials is of interest. However, the model is computationally more expensive when compared to the classical viscoelastic model based on the Prony series kernel function, which can hinder its practical use in solving rather complex boundary value problems.

Abstract:Fractional calculus has been proved to be very effective in representing the visco-elastic relaxation response of materials with memory such as polymers. Moreover, in modelling the temperature dependency of the material functions in thermo-visco-elasticity, the standard time-temperature superposition principle is known to be ineffective in most of the cases (thermo-rehological complexity). In this work, a novel finite element formulation and numerical implementation is proposed for the simulation of transient thermal analysis in thermo-rehologically complex materials. The parameters of the visco-elastic fractional constitutive law are assumed to be temperature dependent functions and an internal history variable is introduced to track the changes in temperature which are responsible for the phase transition of the material. The numerical approximation of the fractional derivative is employed via the so called Grünwald-Letnikov approximation. The proposed model is used to numerically solve some test cases related to relaxation and creep tests conducted on a real polymer (Etylene Vynil Acetate), which is used as the major encapsulant of solar cells in photovoltaics.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations of integral multi-mode and fractional viscoelastic models

Abstract:To capture specific characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids, during the past years fractional constitutive models have become increasingly popular. These models are able to capture in a simple and compact way the complex behaviour of viscoelastic materials, such as the change in power-law relaxation pattern during the relaxation process of some materials. Using the Lagrangian Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method we can easily track particle history; this allows us to solve integral constitutive models in a novel way, without relying on complex tasks. Hence, we develop here a SPH integral viscoelastic method which is first validated for simple Maxwell or Oldroyd-B models under Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear flows (SAOS). By exploiting the structure of the integral method, a multi-mode Maxwell model is then implemented. Finally, the method is extended to include fractional constitutive models, validating the approach by comparing results with theory under SAOS.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the modeling of nonlinear viscoelastic materials. The constitutive equations are considered in differential form via relations between strain, stress, and their derivatives in the Lagrangian description. The thermodynamic consistency is established by using the Clausius–Duhem inequality through a procedure that involves two uncommon features. Firstly, the entropy production is regarded as a positive-valued constitutive function per se. This view implies that the inequality is in fact an equation. Secondly, this statement of the second law is investigated by using an algebraic representation formula, thus arriving at quite general results for rate terms that are usually overlooked in thermodynamic analyses. Starting from strain-rate or stress-rate equations, the corresponding finite equations are derived. It then emerges that a greater generality of the constitutive equations of the classical models, such as those of Boltzmann and Maxwell, are obtained as special cases.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is twofold: from one side we provide a general survey to the viscoelastic models constructed via fractional calculus and from the other side we intend to analyze the basic fractional models as far as their creep, relaxation and viscosity properties are considered. The basic models are those that generalize via derivatives of fractional order the classical mechanical models characterized by two, three and four parameters, that we refer to as Kelvin-Voigt, Maxwell, Zener, anti-Zener and Burgers. For each fractional model we provide plots of the creep compliance, relaxation modulus and effective viscosity in non dimensional form in terms of a suitable time scale for different values of the order of fractional derivative. We also discuss the role of the order of fractional derivative in modifying the properties of the classical models.

Abstract:Both classic rheological models and fractional derivative models have been widely adopted to model the viscoelastic behaviors of materials. In this work, we present a detailed comparison of the performance of the generalized Maxwell model and fractional Zener model. We first describe a method to determine the parameters of the generalized Maxwell model from the fractional Zener model based on the equivalence of complex modulus in the frequency domain of the two models. The two models are then applied to investigating the stress response under constant strain rate, stress relaxation, cyclic and random loading conditions. The simulation results of the two models show excellent quantitatively equivalence. This finding can provide insight into choosing the more suitable model for specific conditions. Abstract:In this work, the capacity of the generalized fractional Maxwell (GFMM) and Kelvin-Voigt (GFKM) models for the interconversion of dynamic to static (creep and relaxation) functions, with regard to appropriate experimental data of various polymeric structures, is examined. The analysis is executed within the frame of linear viscoelasticity. Furthermore, a comparative study with the results produced by the implementation of the fractional Zener model has been performed. A good approximation of the generated viscoelastic functions by GFKM and GFMM model was postulated. Concerning the fractional Zener model, it can be extracted that its effectiveness to the interconversion of the viscoelastic functions is dependent on the specific material's viscoelastic response, and the wideness of the time/frequency region examined. It was found that the incorporation of a correction factor in the calculation procedure of the creep compliance function can result in significantly better results, regardless of the model used.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Originating in the field of biomechanics, Fung's model of quasi-linear viscoelasticity (QLV) is one of the most popular constitutive theories employed to compute the time-dependent relationship between stress and deformation in soft solids. It is one of the simplest models of nonlinear viscoelasticity, based on a time-domain integral formulation. In the present study, we consider the QLV model incorporating a single scalar relaxation function. We provide natural internal variables of state, as well as a consistent expression of the free energy to illustrate the thermodynamic consistency of this version of the QLV model. The thermodynamic formulation highlights striking similarities between QLV and the internal-variable models introduced by Holzapfel and Simo. Finally, the dissipative features of compressible QLV materials are illustrated in simple tension.

Abstract:We consider models for elastic liquids, such as solutions of flexible polymers. They introduce a relaxation time $\lambda$ into the system, over which stresses relax. We study the kinematics of the problem, and clarify the relationship between Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions, thereby showing which polymer models correspond to a nonlinear elastic deformation in the limit $\lambda\rightarrow\infty$. This allows us to split the change in elastic energy into reversible and dissipative parts, and thus to write an equation for the total energy, the sum of kinetic and elastic energies. As an illustration, we show how the presence or absence of an elastic limit determines the fate of an elastic thread during capillary instability, using novel numerical schemes based on our insights into the flow kinematics.

Abstract:The question of interest for the presented study is the mathematical modeling of wave propagation in dissipative media. The generalized fractional Zener model in the case of dimension d (d=1,2,3) is considered. This work is devoted to the mathematical analysis of such model: existence and uniqueness of the strong and weak solution and energy decay result which guarantees the wave dissipation. The existence of the weak solution is shown using a priori estimates for solutions which are also presented.

Abstract:We introduce a class of continuum mechanical models aimed at describing the behaviour of viscoelastic fluids by incorporating concepts originated in the theory of solid plasticity. Within this class, even a simple model with constant material parameters is able to qualitatively reproduce a number of experimental observations in both simple shear and extensional flows, including linear viscoelastic properties, the rate dependence of steady-state material functions, the stress overshoot in incipient shear flows, and the difference in shear and extensional rheological curves. Furthermore, by allowing the relaxation time of the model to depend on the total strain, we can reproduce some experimental observations of the non-attainability of steady flows in uniaxial extension, and link this to a concept of polymeric jamming or effective solidification. Remarkably, this modelling framework helps in understanding the interplay between different mechanisms that may compete in determining the rheology of non-Newtonian materials.

A mathematical model for fitting and predicting relaxation modulus and simulating viscoelastic responses

Abstract:We propose a mathematical model for relaxation modulus and its numerical solution. The model formula is extended from sigmoidal function considering nonlinear strain hardening. Its physical meaning can be interpreted by a macroscale elastic network-viscous medium model with only five model parameters in a simpler format than the molecular-chain-based polymer models to represent general solid materials. We also developed a finite-element (FE) framework and robust numerical algorithm to implement this model for simulating responses under both static and dynamic loadings. We validated the model through both experimental data and numerical simulations on a variety of materials including asphalt concrete, polymer, spider silk, hydrogel, agar and bone. By satisfying the second law of thermodynamics in the form of Calusius–Duhem inequality, the model is able to simulate creep and sinusoidal deformation as well as energy dissipation. Compared to the Prony series, the widely used model with a large number of model parameters, the proposed model has improved accuracy in fitting experimental data and prediction stability outside of the experimental range with competitive numerical stability and computation speed. We also present simulation results of nonlinear stress–strain relationships of spider silk and hydrogels, and dynamic responses of a multilayer structure.
