Abstract:To capture specific characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids, during the past years fractional constitutive models have become increasingly popular. These models are able to capture in a simple and compact way the complex behaviour of viscoelastic materials, such as the change in power-law relaxation pattern during the relaxation process of some materials. Using the Lagrangian Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method we can easily track particle history; this allows us to solve integral constitutive models in a novel way, without relying on complex tasks. Hence, we develop here a SPH integral viscoelastic method which is first validated for simple Maxwell or Oldroyd-B models under Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear flows (SAOS). By exploiting the structure of the integral method, a multi-mode Maxwell model is then implemented. Finally, the method is extended to include fractional constitutive models, validating the approach by comparing results with theory under SAOS.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to effectively handle integral - type constitutive models in the simulation of non - Newtonian fluids (especially materials with viscoelastic properties). Specifically, the paper focuses on developing a method based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) to solve the integral forms of multimodal and fractional - order viscoelastic models. These problems include: 1. **Accurate description of complex fluid behavior**: Traditional differential - type constitutive models have limitations when describing the behavior of certain complex fluids (such as many polymer melts). The stress relaxation processes of these fluids often do not conform to the simple exponential decay law but exhibit power - law decay characteristics. Therefore, integral - type constitutive models need to be used to more accurately describe the viscoelastic behavior of these materials. 2. **Challenges of numerical methods**: Integral - type constitutive models face multiple challenges in numerical implementation, including: - **Non - linear iterative solution**: It is necessary to solve the non - linear iterative process. - **Constitutive equations in Lagrangian form**: Handle constitutive equations written in Lagrangian form. - **Calculation of path integrals**: It is necessary to calculate the convolution of strain and memory functions along the particle paths, which is usually a computationally intensive task. 3. **Advantages of the SPH method**: SPH is a mesh - free Lagrangian method that can easily track the historical information of particles, thereby simplifying the numerical implementation of integral - type constitutive models. The paper takes advantage of this feature of the SPH method to develop a new integral viscoelastic model and verifies the effectiveness of this method through Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear (SAOS) flow. 4. **Extension to multimodal and fractional - order models**: The paper not only verifies the effectiveness of the SPH method under the simple Maxwell or Oldroyd - B models but also further extends it to multimodal Maxwell models and fractional - order constitutive models. By comparing with theoretical results, the accuracy and reliability of the method are verified. In summary, this paper aims to provide an efficient and accurate numerical tool through the SPH method for simulating and analyzing non - Newtonian fluids with complex viscoelasticity, especially those materials that exhibit power - law decay characteristics.
