Abstract:Given a proper, rational map of balls, D'Angelo and Xiao introduced five natural groups encoding properties of the map. We study these groups using a recently discovered normal form for rational maps of balls. Using this normal form, we also provide several new groups associated to the map.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a family of rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles and show that every rational map whose Julia set is a Cantor set of circles must be topologically conjugate to one map in this family on their corresponding Julia sets. In particular, we give the specific expressions of some rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, but they are not topologically conjugate to any McMullen maps on their Julia sets. Moreover, some non-hyperbolic rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles are also constructed.
On Rational Proper Mappings among Generalized Complex Balls

Abstract:We introduce the notion of multiplier, a real-valued bihomogeneous polynomial M-F is an element of C[z(1),(z) over bar (1), . . . ,z(r)(+s),(z) over bar (r+s)] canonically associated to a rational proper map F from a generalized ball D-r,D-s to another generalized ball. We prove that the multiplier MF essentially determines the map F and hence one can study the structure of rational proper mappings among generalized balls through the multiplier. We use the multiplier to study degree-2 rational proper maps from D-2,D-2 to an arbitrary D-r,D-s, demonstrating first of all that one may confine itself to the cases where r,s >= 2 and r + s <= 10 without loss of generality. Then, we show that for each maximal case, i.e. whenever r + s = 10, there exists a real one-parameter family of non-equivalent degree-2 holomorphic proper maps. Finally, we give a complete description of all degree-2 rational proper maps from D-2,D-2 to D-3,D-3, which is the minimal case where there are non-standard mappings.
Proper maps of ball complements & differences and rational sphere maps

Abstract:We consider proper holomorphic maps of ball complements and differences in complex euclidean spaces of dimension at least two. Such maps are always rational, which naturally leads to a related problem of classifying rational maps taking concentric spheres to concentric spheres, what we call $m$-fold sphere maps; a proper map of the difference of concentric balls is a $2$-fold sphere map. We prove that proper maps of ball complements are in one to one correspondence with polynomial proper maps of balls taking infinity to infinity. We show that rational $m$-fold sphere maps of degree less than $m$ (or polynomial maps of degree $m$ or less) must take all concentric spheres to concentric spheres and we provide a complete classification of them. We prove that these degree bounds are sharp.

Rational maps with smooth degenerate Herman rings

Abstract:We prove the existence of rational maps having smooth degenerate Herman rings. This answers a question of Eremenko affirmatively. The proof is based on the construction of smooth Siegel disks by Avila, Buff and Chéritat as well as the classical Siegel-to-Herman quasiconformal surgery. A crucial ingredient in the proof is the surgery's continuity, which relies on the control of the loss of the area of quadratic filled-in Julia sets by Buff and Chéritat. As a by-product, we prove the existence of rational maps having a nowhere dense Julia set of positive area for which these maps have no irrationally indifferent periodic points, no Herman rings, and are not renormalizable.

Exhaustion functions and normal forms for proper maps of balls

Abstract:We study a relationship between rational proper maps of balls in different dimensions and strongly plurisubharmonic exhaustion functions of the unit ball induced by such maps. Putting the unique critical point of this exhaustion function at the origin leads to a normal form for rational proper maps of balls. The normal form of the map, which is up to composition with unitaries, takes the origin to the origin, and it normalizes the denominator by eliminating the linear terms and diagonalizing the quadratic part. The singular values of the quadratic part of the denominator are spherical invariants of the map. When these singular values are positive and distinct, the normal form is determined up to a finite subgroup of the unitary group. We also study which denominators arise for cubic maps, and when we do not require taking the origin to the origin, which maps are equivalent to polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we give presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries for any genus. Note that in the existing works, the mapping class groups of marked surfaces were the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms fixing boundaries pointwise. The condition for stabilizing boundaries of mapping class groups makes the requirement for mapping class groups to fix boundaries pointwise to be unnecessary. As an application of presentations of the mapping class groups of marked surfaces stabilizing boundaries, we obtain the presentation of the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from a feasible surface ( S, M ). Lastly, for the case (1) 4-punctured sphere, the cluster automorphism group of a cluster algebra from the surface is characterized. Since cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from those surfaces were given in [1] in the cases (2) the once-punctured 4-gon and (3) the twice-punctured digon, we indeed give presentations of cluster automorphism groups of cluster algebras from surfaces which are not feasible. Abstract:A dessin d'enfant, or dessin, is a bicolored graph embedded into a Riemann surface, and the monodromy group is an algebraic invariant of the dessin generated by rotations of edges about black and white vertices. A rational polygonal billiards surface is a Riemann surface that arises from the dynamical system of billiards within a rational-angled polygon. In this paper, we compute the monodromy groups of dessins embedded into rational polygonal billiards surfaces and identify all possible monodromy groups arising from rational triangular billiards surfaces.

On almost complex embeddings of rational homology balls

Abstract:We use elementary arguments to prove that none of the Stein rational homology 4-balls shown by the authors and Brendan Owens to embed smoothly but not symplectically in the complex projective plane admit such almost complex embeddings. In particular, we are able to show that those rational balls admit no symplectic embeddings in the complex projective plane without appealing to the work of Evans-Smith.

Abstract:According to the Circle Packing Theorem, any triangulation of the Riemann sphere can be realized as a nerve of a circle packing. Reflections in the dual circles generate a Kleinian group $H$ whose limit set is an Apollonian-like gasket $\Lambda_H$. We design a surgery that relates $H$ to a rational map $g$ whose Julia set $\mathcal{J}_g$ is (non-quasiconformally) homeomorphic to $\Lambda_H$. We show for a large class of triangulations, however, the groups of quasisymmetries of $\Lambda_H$ and $\mathcal{J}_g$ are isomorphic and coincide with the corresponding groups of self-homeomorphisms. Moreover, in the case of $H$, this group is equal to the group of Möbius symmetries of $\Lambda_H$, which is the semi-direct product of $H$ itself and the group of Möbius symmetries of the underlying circle packing. In the case of the tetrahedral triangulation (when $\Lambda_ H$ is the classical Apollonian gasket), we give a piecewise affine model for the above actions which is quasiconformally equivalent to $g$ and produces $H$ by a David surgery. We also construct a mating between the group and the map coexisting in the same dynamical plane and show that it can be generated by Schwarz reflections in the deltoid and the inscribed circle.

Rational Curves on Real Classical Groups

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Abstract:Let X be an irreducible variety and Bir(X) its group of birational transformations. We show that the group structure of Bir(X) determines whether X is rational and whether X is ruled. Additionally, we prove that any Borel subgroup of Bir(X) has derived length at most twice the dimension of X, with equality occurring if and only if X is rational and the Borel subgroup is standard. We also provide examples of non-standard Borel subgroups of Bir(P^n) and Aut(A^n), thereby resolving conjectures by Popov and Furter-Poloni.

Abstract:Complex rational maps have been used to construct birational quadratic maps based on two special syzygies of degree one. Similar to complex rational curves, rational curves over generalized complex numbers have also been constructed by substituting the imaginary unit with a new independent quantity. We first establish the relationship between degree one, generalized, complex rational Bézier curves and quadratic rational Bézier curves. Then we provide conditions to determine when a quadratic rational planar map has a generalized complex rational representation. Thus, a rational quadratic planar map can be made birational by suitably choosing the middle Bézier control points and their corresponding weights. In contrast to the edges of complex rational maps of degree one, which are circular arcs, the edges of the planar maps can be generalized to hyperbolic and parabolic arcs by invoking the hyperbolic and parabolic numbers.

Abstract:Studying the existence of rational functions with given branching datum is a classical problem in the field of complex analysis and algebraic geometry. This problem dates back to Hurwitz and remains open to this day. In this paper, we utilize complex analysis to establish a property of rational functions with 3 branching points on the Riemann sphere. Given two compact Riemann surfaces M and N, a pair (d,𝒟) of an integer d≥2 and a collection 𝒟 of nontrivial partitions of d is called a candidate branching datum if it satisfies the Riemann-Hurwitz formula. And a candidate branching datum is exceptional if there does not exist a rational function realization it. As applications, we present some new types of exceptional branching datum. These results cover some previous results mentioned in <cit.>. We also deduce the realizability of a certain type of candidate branching datum on the Riemann sphere.

Abstract:Motivated by Akbulut-Larson's construction of Brieskorn spheres bounding rational homology 4-balls, we explore plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles and use them to construct infinite families of rational homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls. Some of these rational homology 3-spheres are new examples of integer homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls, but do not bound integer homology 4-balls (i.e. nontrivial elements of <math>ker(ΘZ3→ΘQ3)</math>). In particular, we find infinite families of torus bundles over the circle that bound rational homology circles, provide a simple method for constructing more general plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles, and show that, for example, −1-surgery along any unknotting number one knot K with a positive crossing that can be switched to unknot K bounds a rational homology 4-ball.

Abstract:We prove that for finitely generated abelian groups $A$ and $B$, the space of $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring maps between the spherical groups rings $\mathbb{S}[A] \to \mathbb{S}[B]$ is equivalent to the discrete set of group homomorphisms $A \to B$. We also prove generalizations where the sphere is replaced by other ring spectra, e.g. we give a formula for the strict units in group rings of the form $R[A]$ for $A$ a finite $p$-group and $R$ $p$-completely chromatically complete.
