Abstract:Rational curves and surfaces are powerful tools for shape representation and geometric modeling. However, the real weights are generally difficult to choose except for a few special cases such as representing conics. This paper presents an extension of rational curves and surfaces by replacing the real weights with matrices. The matrix weighted rational curves and surfaces have the same structures as the traditional rational curves and surfaces but the matrix weights can be defined in geometric ways. In particular, the weight matrices for the extended rational Bézier, NURBS or the generalized subdivision curves and surfaces are computed using the normal vectors specified at the control points. Similar to the effects of control points, the specified normals can be used to control the curve or the surface's shape efficiently. It is also shown that matrix weighted NURBS curves and surfaces can pass through their control points, thus curve or surface reconstruction by the extended NURBS model no longer needs solving any large system but just choosing control points and control normals from the input data.

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}(w_0, w_1, w_2, w_3)$ be a quasismooth well-formed weighted projective hypersurface and let $L = lcm(w_0,w_1,w_2,w_3)$. We characterize when $X$ is rational under the assumption that $L$ divides $deg(X)$ by combining an algebraic proof of rationality valid in all dimensions with a new result on numerical semigroups. As applications, we give new examples of families of normal projective rational varieties with quotient singularities and ample canonical divisor; we also determine precisely which affine Pham-Brieskorn threefolds are rational.

Abstract:A very general hypersurface of dimension $n$ and degree $d$ in complex projective space is rational if $d \leq 2$, but is expected to be irrational for all $n, d \geq 3$. Hypersurfaces in weighted projective space with degree small relative to the weights are likewise rational. In this paper, we introduce rationality constructions for weighted hypersurfaces of higher degree that provide many new rational examples over any field. We answer in the affirmative a question of T. Okada about the existence of very general terminal Fano rational weighted hypersurfaces in all dimensions $n \geq 6$.

Abstract:We study properties of rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic. It has long been known that in characteristic 0, smooth Calabi–Yau and general type varieties are not uniruled. In positive characteristic, however, there are well-known counterexamples to this statement. We will show that nevertheless, a general Calabi–Yau or general type complete intersection in projective space is not uniruled. We will also show that the space of complete intersections of degree (d1,⋯,dk) containing a rational curve has codimension at least ∑i=1kdi−2n+2 and give similar results for hypersurfaces containing higher genus curves.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Abstract:A classical result of von Staudt states that if eight planes osculate a twisted cubic curve and we divide them into two groups of four, then the eight vertices of the corresponding tetrahedra lie on a twisted cubic curve. In the current paper, we give an alternative proof of this result using modern tools, and at the same time we prove the analogous result for rational normal curves in any projective space. This higher dimensional generalization was claimed without proof in a paper of H.S. White in 1921.

Abstract:We investigate group actions on the category of coherent sheaves over weighted projective lines. We show that the equivariant category with respect to certain finite group action is equivalent to the category of coherent sheaves over a weighted projective curve, where the genus of the underlying smooth projective curve and the weight data are given by explicit formulas. Moreover, we obtain a trichotomy result for all such equivariant relations. This equivariant approach provides an effective way to investigate smooth projective curves via weighted projective lines. As an application, we give a description for the category of coherent sheaves over a hyperelliptic curve of arbitrary genus. Links to smooth projective curves of genus 2 and also to Arnold's exceptional unimodal singularities are also established.

Curve classes on conic bundle threefolds and applications to rationality

Abstract:We undertake a study of conic bundle threefolds $\pi\colon X\to W$ over geometrically rational surfaces whose associated discriminant covers $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta\subset W$ are smooth and geometrically irreducible. First, we determine the structure of the group $\mathrm{CH}^2 X_{\overline{k}}$ of rational equivalence classes of curves. Precisely, we construct a Galois-equivariant group homomorphism from $\mathrm{CH}^2X_{\overline{k}}$ to a group scheme associated to the discriminant cover $\tilde{\Delta}\to \Delta$ of $X$. The target group scheme is a generalization of the Prym variety of $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta$ and so our result can be viewed as a generalization of Beauville's result that the algebraically trivial curve classes on $X_{\overline{k}}$ are parametrized by the Prym variety. We apply our structural result on curve classes to study the refined intermediate Jacobian torsor (IJT) obstruction to rationality introduced by Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. The first case of interest is $W = \mathbb P^2$ and $\Delta$ is a smooth plane quartic. In this case, we show that the IJT obstruction characterizes rationality when the ground field has less arithmetic complexity (precisely, when the $2$-torsion in the Brauer group of the ground field is trivial). We also show that a hypothesis of this form is necessary by constructing, over any $k \subset\mathbb R$, a conic bundle threefold with $\Delta$ a smooth quartic where the IJT obstruction vanishes, yet $X$ is irrational over $k$.

Abstract:Given $\eta=\begin{pmatrix} a&b\\c&d \end{pmatrix}\in \text{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q})$, we consider the number of rational points on the genus one curve \[H_\eta:y^2=(a(1-x^2)+b(2x))^2+(c(1-x^2)+d(2x))^2.\] We prove that the set of $\eta$ for which $H_\eta(\mathbb{Q})\neq\emptyset$ has density zero, and that if a rational point $(x_0,y_0)\in H_\eta(\mathbb{Q})$ exists, then $H_\eta(\mathbb{Q})$ is infinite unless a certain explicit polynomial in $a,b,c,d,x_0,y_0$ vanishes. Curves of the form $H_\eta$ naturally occur in the study of configurations of points in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with rational distances between them. As one example demonstrating this framework, we prove that if a line through the origin in $\mathbb{R}^2$ passes through a rational point on the unit circle, then it contains a dense set of points $P$ such that the distances from $P$ to each of the three points $(0,0)$, $(0,1)$, and $(1,1)$ are all rational. We also prove some results regarding whether a rational number can be expressed as a sum or product of slopes of rational right triangles.

Abstract:In projective space over fields of characteristic different from 2, the normal bundle of a general nondegenerate rational curve is balanced. The corresponding statement for rational curves in other Grassmannians can fail. Nevertheless, we prove that the normal bundle of a general rational curve in a Grassmannian decomposes into a direct sum of line bundles whose degrees are at most 2 apart.

Abstract:The blown up complex projective plane in the twelve triple points of the dual Hesse arrangement has an infinite number of irreducible rational curves of self-intersection $-1$, for short, $(-1)$-curves. In the preprint version of [Dumnicki, 2019], T. Szemberg et alii tried to keep track of plane rational curves which produce $(-1)$-curves, by applying successively to a straight line compositions taken from three different quadratic Cremona maps preserving the dual Hesse arrangement, in such a way as to produce a diagram of bifurcations. The symmetric aspect of the degrees of curves encoded in the entries of the diagram motivated them to propose the problem of to give a closed formula for the degree of the rational curve at the entry $a_{i,j}$. We solved this problem for a slightly different diagram of bifurcations of the same Cremona maps, which recover and extends the data on degrees of the original diagram. We also are able to describe the position and multiplicites of singularities of each rational curve encoded in the diagram, as well as their equations (implemented in Python and Singular softwares). Our idea is to embed the plane rational curves as components of special elements of elliptic pencils, then apply a closed formula for the degrees of the generic curves of the elliptic pencils of [Puchuri, 2013], and, from this, extract the data of the rational curves on each entry of the diagram.

Abstract:We study characteristic classes of hypersurfaces in the complex projective space, with emphasis on secants to rational normal curves. For $Sec_k C\subset \mathbb{P}^{n}$, the secant of $k$ points to a rational normal curve $C\subset \mathbb{P}^n$, we compute the Hilbert series and the topological Euler characteristic. For $n=2r$ and $k=r$, the case when $Sec_r C\subset \mathbb{P}^{2r}$ is a hypersurface, we show that the dual $(Sec_r C)^*$ is isomorphic to the Veronese variety $\nu_2(\mathbb{P}^r)$, from which we obtain, for $Sec_r C$, formulas for the Mather class, the generic Euclidean distance degree and its polar degrees. Furthermore, we present an explicit formula for the topological degree of the gradient map $\phi_r \colon \mathbb{P}^{2r} \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^{2r} $ associated with $Sec_r C$, and as a consequence we obtain an affirmative answer for a conjecture by M. Mostafazadehfard and A. Simis: for $r \geq 2$, the hypersurface $Sec_r C\subset \mathbb{P}^{2r}$ is not homaloidal. From computations in particular cases we are led to a conjecture, namely, explicit formulas for the projective degrees of the gradient map $\phi_r$ and the Schwartz-MacPherson class $c_{SM}(Sec_r C)\in A_* \mathbb{P}^{2r}$, for all $r$. Abstract:We construct a large new family of rational algebraic curves in the complex projective plane with a (p,q) cusp singularity. More precisely, we classify all such pairs (p,q) for curves which are rigid (in a suitable sense), finding a phase transition from discrete to continuous as the ratio p/q crosses the fourth power of the golden ratio. In particular, for many values of (p,q), our curves solve the minimal degree problem for plane curves with a (p,q) cusp singularity. Our technique relies on (i) explicit bijections between curves in log Calabi-Yau surfaces and curves in nontoric blowups of toric surfaces, (ii) the tropical vertex group and its connections with relative Gromov--Witten invariants, and (iii) recent positivity results for scattering diagrams. As our main application, we completely solve the stabilized symplectic embedding problem for four-dimensional ellipsoids into the four-dimensional round ball. The answer is neatly encoded in a single piecewise smooth function which transitions from an infinite Fibonacci staircase to an explicit rational function. Many of our results also extend to other target spaces, e.g. del Pezzo surfaces and more general rational surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we study whether a given morphism $f$ from the tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^1$ to a balanced vector bundle of degree $(n+1)d$ is induced by the restriction of the tangent bundle $T_{\mathbb{P}^n}$ to a rational curve of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We propose a conjecture on this problem based on Mathematica computations of some examples and provide computer-assisted proof of the conjecture for certain values of $n$ and $d$.

Abstract:Rational conic fibrations embedded in PN and containing an irreducible curve C transverse to the fibers are classified when C is either a plane curve or a rational normal curve of any degree d . This extends our previous results concerning lines, conics and twisted cubics. To emphasize the role of linear normality, the case in which C is a non-normal rational quartic is also discussed. Moreover, the rank of the d -th jet map of the surface at all points lying on such curves is evaluated.

The argument uses spreading out to a finite field, together with an adaptation to function fields of positive characteristic of work by Rydin Myerson on the circle method. Our work also allows us to handle weak approximation for such varieties.

Abstract:Given a smooth curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ with genus $\geq 2$, we know by Faltings' Theorem that $C(\mathbb{Q})$ is finite. Here we ask the reverse question: given a finite set of rational points $S\subseteq \mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{Q})$, does there exist a smooth curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ contained in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that $C(\mathbb{Q})=S$? We answer this question in the affirmative by providing an effective algorithm for constructing such a curve.
