Abstract:We provide sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of infinite-dimensional quantum control systems corresponding to form perturbations of the drift Hamiltonian modulated by a control function. We rely on previous results on controllability of quantum bilinear control systems and obtain a priori $L^1$-bounds of the controls for generic initial and target states. We apply a stability result for the non-autonomous Schrödinger equation to extend the results to systems defined by form perturbations, including singular perturbations. As an application of our results, we prove approximate controllability of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional box with a point-interaction with tuneable strength at the centre of the box.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the sufficient conditions for global approximate controllability through formal perturbations in infinite - dimensional quantum systems. Specifically, the paper focuses on quantum control systems defined by formal perturbations of a given self - adjoint operator \(H_0\), and these perturbations can be singular (such as point interactions). The main objective of the paper is to provide sufficient conditions for the global approximate controllability of these systems and prove that for specific initial and target states, there exist control functions such that the system can be arbitrarily close to the target state from the initial state.
### Main contributions of the paper:
1. **Sufficient conditions for global approximate controllability**:
- Proposed sufficient conditions for verifying the global approximate controllability of infinite - dimensional quantum control systems.
- These conditions include the relative boundedness of formal perturbations, the existence of connectivity chains, and non - resonance conditions.
2. **A priori \(L^1\) bounds of control functions**:
- Proved that for general initial and target states, there exists an a priori bound for the \(L^1\) norm of control functions.
3. **Application examples**:
- Verified the validity of the theoretical results through a specific example, that is, a quantum particle in a one - dimensional box is controlled by a central point interaction.
### Key concepts and methods:
1. **Formal bilinear quantum control system**:
- Defined a triple \((H_0, h_1, r)\), where \(H_0\) is a non - negative self - adjoint operator, \(h_1\) is a Hermitian bilinear form that is relatively bounded with respect to \(h_0\), and \(r\) is the maximum value of the control intensity.
2. **Connectivity chain**:
- A connectivity chain is a set \(S\subset\mathbb{N}^2\) such that for any two states \(\Phi_j\) and \(\Phi_\ell\), there exists a path where each step on the path corresponds to a non - zero \(h_1(\Phi_j, \Phi_k)\).
3. **Non - resonance condition**:
- The non - resonance condition requires that for each pair of states \((s_1, s_2)\) in the connectivity chain, the corresponding energy level difference is not equal to the energy level differences of other states outside the chain.
4. **Regular approximation family**:
- If a formal bilinear system can be approximated by a sequence of regular systems, then the controllability results of existing bilinear control systems can be used to prove the controllability of the formal bilinear system.
### Application example:
- **Quantum particle in a one - dimensional box**:
- By controlling a quantum particle in a one - dimensional box through a point interaction (Dirac delta interaction), it is proved that the system is approximately controllable within the even - function subspace.
### Conclusion:
By introducing the concept of formal perturbations, this paper extends the existing quantum control system theory and provides a new method for dealing with singular perturbations. The results of the paper are not only of great theoretical significance but also provide a powerful tool for practical applications.
