Abstract:Strain engineering is a versatile method to boost the carrier mobility of two-dimensional materials-based electronics and optoelectronic devices. In addition, strain is ubiquitous during device fabrication via material deposition on a substrate with a different lattice structure. Here, we show that the polarization properties of the harmonics in graphene under uniaxial strain are strongly yet differently affected in the lower and higher orders. The polarization plane of the lower-order emitted harmonics is rotated -- a manifestation of Faraday rotation due to the broken symmetry planes. In contrast, we observe elliptically-polarized higher-order harmonics due to the intricate interplay of the interband and intraband electron dynamics. The implications of these findings are twofold: First, we show how the rotation of the polarization plane of the lower-order harmonics can be used as a probe to characterize the strain's nature, strength, and angle. Second, we demonstrate how strain engineering can be used to alter the polarization properties of higher-order harmonics, relevant for applications in ultrafast chiral-sensitive studies. Our research opens a promising avenue for strain-tailored polarization properties of higher-order harmonics in engineered solids.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to regulate the polarization characteristics of high - order harmonics through uniaxial strain engineering in graphene. Specifically, the research focuses on how the polarization properties of low - order and high - order harmonics generated by graphene change under uniaxial strains of different directions and intensities. It is found that uniaxial strain can not only significantly affect the generation efficiency of harmonics, but also change their polarization states. In particular, elliptical polarization phenomena are observed in high - order harmonics. These results are of great significance for understanding the influence of strain on the interaction between light and matter in two - dimensional materials and for developing ultrafast optical techniques based on strain modulation. ### Main research contents 1. **Polarization rotation of low - order harmonics**: - Research shows that after applying uniaxial strain, the polarization plane of low - order harmonics generated by graphene will rotate. This is because the strain breaks the symmetry plane of graphene, similar to the Faraday rotation effect. - By analyzing the polarization dependence of low - order harmonics, information on the direction, nature and intensity of the strain can be extracted. 2. **Elliptical polarization of high - order harmonics**: - High - order harmonics exhibit elliptical polarization characteristics, which are caused by the complex interaction between inter - band and intra - band dynamics of electrons. - By analyzing the time - frequency diagrams of high - order harmonics, it is found that the harmonic burst times of the X - component and the Y - component are not synchronized, resulting in the elliptical polarization phenomenon. 3. **Influence of strain on electron dynamics**: - The electron dynamics driven by lasers are simulated by the density matrix method. It is found that the strain changes the distribution of momentum matrix elements, thereby affecting the polarization characteristics of harmonics. - The strain breaks the reflection symmetry of graphene, making the inter - band and intra - band currents contribute differently in different Brillouin zones, thus producing complex polarization dependence. ### Research significance - **Strain characterization**: By analyzing the polarization characteristics of high - order harmonics, the strain in graphene can be characterized with high precision, which is of great significance for device design and performance optimization of two - dimensional materials. - **Ultrafast optical applications**: Strain - modulated high - order harmonic polarization control provides new possibilities for the development of ultrafast optical techniques, especially having potential application value in the study of chiral - sensitive light - matter interactions. ### Formula examples - **Strain tensor**: \[ \varepsilon = \varepsilon \begin{pmatrix} \cos^2\theta_s - \sigma \sin^2\theta_s & (1 + \sigma) \cos\theta_s \sin\theta_s \\ (1 + \sigma) \cos\theta_s \sin\theta_s & \sin^2\theta_s - \sigma \cos^2\theta_s \end{pmatrix} \] where \(\varepsilon\) represents the strain intensity, \(\theta_s\) is the strain direction, and \(\sigma = 0.165\) is the Poisson ratio. - **Hamiltonian**: \[ H_k = - \sum_{<mn>} \gamma_{mn} e^{i k \cdot \delta_{mn}} \hat{a}^\dagger_{mk} \hat{b}_{nk} + \text{H.c.} \] where \(\hat{a}^\dagger_{mk}\) and \(\hat{a}_{mk}\) respectively represent the electron creation and annihilation operators on the A sub - lattice, and \(\hat{b}^\dagger_{nk}\) and \(\hat{b}_{nk}\) respectively represent the electron creation and annihilation operators on the B sub - lattice.
