Abstract:We study codimension one (transversally oriented) foliations $\fa$ on oriented closed manifolds $M$ having non-empty compact singular set $\sing(\fa)$ which is locally defined by Bott-Morse functions. We prove that if the transverse type of $\fa$ at each singular point is a center and $\fa$ has a compact leaf with finite fundamental group or a component of $\sing(\fa)$ has codimension $\ge 3$ and finite fundamental group, then all leaves of $\fa$ are compact and diffeomorphic, $\sing(\fa)$ consists of two connected components, and there is a Bott-Morse function $f:M \to [0,1]$ such that $f\colon M \setminus \sing(\fa) \to (0,1)$ is a fiber bundle defining $\fa$ and $\sing(\fa) = f^{-1}(\{0,1\})$. This yields to a topological description of the type of leaves that appear in these foliations, and also the type of manifolds admiting such foliations. These results unify, and generalize, well known results for cohomogeneity one isometric actions and a theorem of Reeb for foliations with Morse singularities of center type. In this case each leaf of $\fa$ is a sphere fiber bundle over each component of $\sing(\fa)$.

Abstract:For Morse-Smale pairs on a smooth, closed manifold the Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex can be defined. The associated Morse homology is isomorphic to the singular homology of the manifold and yields the classical Morse relations for Morse functions. A similar approach can be used to define homological invariants for isolated invariant sets of flows on a smooth manifold, which gives an analogue of the Conley index and the Morse-Conley relations. The approach will be referred to as Morse-Conley-Floer homology.

Abstract:We construct a Floer type boundary operator for generalised Morse-Smale dynamical systems on compact smooth manifolds by counting the number of suitable flow lines between closed (both homoclinic and periodic) orbits and isolated critical points. The same principle works for the discrete situation of general combinatorial vector fields, defined by Forman, on CW complexes. We can thus recover the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ homology of both smooth and discrete structures directly from the flow lines (V-paths) of our vector field.

Abstract:Let be a Morse–Bott foliation on the solid torus into 2-tori parallel to the boundary and one singular central circle. Gluing two copies of T by some diffeomorphism between their boundaries, one gets a lens space with a Morse–Bott foliation obtained from on each copy of T and thus consisting of two singular circles and parallel 2-tori. In the previous paper Khokliuk and Maksymenko (J Homotopy Relat Struct 18:313–356. https://doi.org/10.1007/s40062-023-00328-z, 2024) there were computed weak homotopy types of the groups of leaf preserving (i.e. leaving invariant each leaf) diffeomorphisms of such foliations. In the present paper it is shown that the inclusion of these groups into the corresponding group of foliated (i.e. sending leaves to leaves) diffeomorphisms which do not interchange singular circles are homotopy equivalences.

Abstract:A singular foliation is a partition of a manifold into leaves of perhaps varying dimension. Stefan and Sussmann carried out fundamental work on singular foliations in the 1970s. We survey their contributions, show how diffeological objects and ideas arise naturally in this setting, and highlight some consequences within diffeology. We then introduce a definition of transverse equivalence of singular foliations, following Molino's definition for regular foliations. We show that, whereas transverse equivalent singular foliations always have diffeologically diffeomorphic leaf spaces, the converse holds only for certain classes of singular foliations. We finish by showing that the basic cohomology of a singular foliation is invariant under transverse equivalence.

Abstract:The basic cohomology of a Riemannian foliation on a complete manifold with all leaves closed is the cohomology of the leaf space. In this paper we introduce various methods to compute the basic cohomology in the presence of both closed and non-closed leaves in the simply-connected case (or more generally for Killing foliations): We show that the total basic Betti number of the union C of the closed leaves is smaller than or equal to the total basic Betti number of the foliated manifold, and we give sufficient conditions for equality. If there is a basic Morse-Bott function with critical set equal to C we can compute the basic cohomology explicitly. Another case in which the basic cohomology can be determined is if the space of leaf closures is a simple, convex polytope. Our results are based on Molino's observation that the existence of non-closed leaves yields a distinguished transverse action on the foliated manifold with fixed point set C. We introduce equivariant basic cohomology of transverse actions in analogy to equivariant cohomology of Lie group actions enabling us to transfer many results from the theory of Lie group actions to Riemannian foliations. The prominent role of the fixed point set in the theory of torus actions explains the relevance of the set C in the basic setting.

Abstract:This is a sequel to our paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2008.13462" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.13462">arXiv:2008.13462</a>, where we proposed a definition of the Morse homotopy of the moment polytope of toric manifolds. Using this as the substitute of the Fukaya category of the toric manifolds, we proved a version of homological mirror symmetry for the projective spaces and their products via Strominger-Yau-Zaslow construction of the mirror dual Landau-Ginzburg model. In this paper we go this way further and extend our previous result to the case of the Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_1$.

Abstract:By studying spaces of flow graphs in a closed oriented manifold, we construct operations on its cohomology, parametrized by the homology of the moduli spaces of compact Riemann surfaces with boundary marked points. We show that the operations satisfy the gluing axiom of an open homological conformal field theory. This complements previous constructions due to R. Cohen et al., K. Costello and M. Kontsevich and is also the Morse theoretic counterpart to a conjectural construction of operations on the Lagrangian Floer homology of the zero section of a cotangent bundle, obtained by studying uncompactified moduli spaces of higher genus pseudoholomorphic curves.

Veering triangulations and transverse foliations

Abstract:We present a combinatorial approach to the existence of foliations and contact structures transverse to a given pseudo-Anosov flow. Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed oriented 3-manifold. Our main technical result is that every codimension 1 foliation transverse to $\varphi$ is carried by a single branched surface coming from a veering triangulation. Combined with recent breakthrough work of Massoni, this reduces the existence problem for transverse foliations to something like the feasibility of a system of inequalities (rather than equations!) over $Homeo_+([0,1])$. As a proof of concept, we show that for the hyperbolic, fibered, non-L-space knot $10_{145}$, the natural pseudo-Anosov flow on the slope $s$ Dehn surgery admits a transverse foliation for $s\in (-\infty, 3)$, but does not admit such a foliation for $s\in [5,\infty)$. The negative result is part of a more general Milnor--Wood type phenomenon which puts limitations on some well known methods for constructing taut foliations on Dehn surgeries.

New cohomological invariants of foliations

Abstract:Given a smooth foliation on a closed manifold, basic forms are differential forms that can be expressed locally in terms of the transverse variables. The space of basic forms yields a differential complex, because the exterior derivative fixes this set. The basic cohomology is the cohomology of this complex, and this has been studied extensively. Given a Riemannian metric, the adjoint of the exterior derivative maps the orthogonal complement of the basic forms to itself, and we call the resulting cohomology the "antibasic cohomology". Although these groups are defined using the metric, the dimensions of the antibasic cohomology groups are invariant under diffeomorphism and metric changes. If the underlying foliation is Riemannian, the groups are foliated homotopy invariants that are independent of basic cohomology and ordinary cohomology of the manifold. For this class of foliations we use the codifferential on antibasic forms to obtain the corresponding Laplace operator, develop its analytic properties, and prove a Hodge theorem. We then find some topological and geometric properties that impose restrictions on the antibasic Betti numbers.

A remark on taut foliations and Floer homology

Abstract:It is well-known that the reduced Floer homology of a rational homology sphere admitting a taut foliation does not vanish. We strengthen this by showing that (when thought of as an $\mathbb{F}[U]$-module) it also admits a direct $\mathbb{F}$-summand. Hence, one could potentially detect counterexamples to the foliation part of the $L$-space conjecture via purely Floer theoretic computations.

Abstract:By extending a result of Kronheimer-Mrowka to the family setting, we prove a gluing formula for the family Seiberg-Witten invariant. This formula allows one to compute the invariant for a smooth family of 4-manifolds by cutting it open along a product family of 3-manifolds and studying the induced maps on monopole Floer (co)homology. When the cutting 3-manifold is an L-space, this formula implies a relation between the family Seiberg-Witten invariant, the Seiberg-Witten invariant of the fiber and the index of the family Dirac operator. We use this relation to calculate the Seiberg-Witten invariant of families of 4-manifolds that arise when resolving an ADE singularity using a hyperkähler family of complex structures near the singularity. Several applications are obtained. First, we establish a large family of simply-connected 4-manifolds M (e.g. all elliptic surfaces) such that π_1(Diff(M)) has a ℤ^∞-summand . For such M, the product S^2× M smoothly fibers over S^2 with fiber M in infinitely many distinct ways. Second, we show that on any closed symplectic 4-manifold that contains a smoothly embedded sphere of self-intersection -1 or -2, there is a loop of diffeomorphisms that is not homotopic to a loop of symplectormorphisms. This generalizes a previous result by Smirnov and confirms a conjecture by McDuff in dimension 4. It also provides many new examples of 4-manifolds whose space of symplectic forms has a nontrivial fundamental group or first homology group.

Abstract:We classify the indexed links corresponding to the union of the closed orbits of non-singular Morse-Smale flows on most graph manifolds. We find that each of this kind of indexed links can be obtained by applying a finite steps of operations on a special indexed link, which consists of all of the singular Seifert fibers and some regular Seifert fibers with some precisely described conditions.

Equivariant Morse theory for Lie algebra actions on Riemannian foliations

Abstract:Consider the transverse isometric action of a finite dimensional Lie algebra g on a Riemannian foliation. This paper studies the equivariant Morse-Bott theory on the leaf space of the Riemannian foliations in this setting. Among other things, we establish a foliated version of the Morse-Bott lemma for a g-invariant basic Morse-Bott function, and a foliated version of the usual handle presentation theorem. In the non-equivariant case, we apply these results to present a new proof of the Morse inequalities on Riemannian foliations. In the equivariant case, we apply these results to study Hamiltonian action of an abelian Lie algebra on a presymplectic manifold whose underlying foliation is also Riemannian, and extend the Kirwan surjectivity and injectivity theorem in equivariant symplectic geometry to this situation. Among other things, this implies the Kirwan surjectivity and injectivity hold for Hamiltonian torus actions on symplectic orbifolds.

Abstract:Topology of the Generic Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems on the Riemann Surfaces given by the real part of the generic holomorphic 1-forms, is studied. Our approach is based on the notion of Transversal Canonical Basis of Cycles (TCB). This approach allows us to present a convenient combinatorial model of the whole topology of the flow, especially effective for g=2. A maximal abelian covering over the Riemann Surface is needed here. The complete combinatorial model of the flow is constructed. It consists of the Plane Diagram and g straight line flows in the 2-tori ''with obstacles''. The Fundamental Semigroup of positive closed paths transversal to foliation, and the topological characteristics of trajectories, are studied. This work contains an improved exposition of the results presented in the authors recent preprint (arXiv <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.GT/0105338" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.GT/0105338">math.GT/0105338</a>) and new results calculating all TCB in the 2-torus with obstacle, in terms of Continued Fractions.

Abstract:In this note, we show that the solution of Kähler–Ricci flow on every Fano threefold from Family No. 2.23 in the Mori–Mukai’s list develops type II singularity. In fact, we show that no Fano threefold from Family No. 2.23 admits Kähler–Ricci soliton and the Gromov–Hausdorff limit of the Kähler–Ricci flow must be a singular ℚ -Fano variety. This gives new examples of Fano manifolds of the lowest dimension on which Kähler–Ricci flow develops type II singularity.

Abstract:For most aspherical Seifert-fibered 3-manifolds $M$, the space of Seifert fiberings $SF(M)$ is known to have contractible components. It is also known that the space of Hopf fiberings of the three-sphere is noncontractible. We provide the second example of a non-aspherical 3-manifold $M$ such that $SF(M)$ has noncontractible components. In particular, we show that certain components of $SF(S^1 \times S^2)$ are homotopy equivalent to a subspace homeomorphic to the identity-based loop space $\Omega SO(3)$, and we exhibit second homology generators for both connected components of $SF(S^1 \times S^2)$.

Abstract:We prove that every three-dimensional vector field can be C-1 accumulated by Morse-Smale ones, or by ones with a transverse homoclinic intersection of some hyperbolic periodic orbit.
