Abstract:We investigate the distortion of the Assouad dimension and (regularized) spectrum of sets under planar quasiregular maps. While the respective results for the Hausdorff and upper box-counting dimension follow immediately from their quasiconformal counterparts by employing elementary properties of these dimension notions (e.g. countable stability and Lipschitz stability), the Assouad dimension and spectrum do not share such properties. We obtain upper bounds on the Assouad dimension and spectrum of images of compact sets under planar quasiregular maps by studying their behavior around their critical points. As an application the invariance of porosity of compact subsets of the plane under quasiregular maps is established.

Definitions of quasiconformality on metric surfaces

Abstract:We explore the interplay between different definitions of distortion for mappings $f\colon X\to \mathbb{R}^2$, where $X$ is any metric surface, meaning that $X$ is homeomorphic to a domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and has locally finite 2-dimensional Hausdorff measure. We establish that finite distortion in terms of the familiar analytic definition always implies finite distortion in terms of maximal and minimal stretchings along paths. The converse holds for maps with locally integrable distortion. In particular, we prove the equivalence of various notions of quasiconformality, implying a novel uniformization result for metric surfaces.

Abstract:Certain classical results on cluster sets and boundary cluster sets of analytic functions, due to Iversen, Lindelöf, Noshiro, Tsuji, Ohtsuka, Pommerenke, Carmona, Cufi and others, are extended to n-dimensional quasiconformal mappings. Unlike what is usually the case in the context of analytic functions, our considerations are not restricted to mappings of a disk or ball only. It is shown, for instance, that quasiconformal cluster sets and boundary cluster sets, taken at a non-isolated boundary point of an arbitrary domain, coincide. More refined versions are established in the special case where the domain is the open unit ball. These include cluster set considerations of the induced radial boundary extension and results where certain exceptional sets on the boundary are allowed for.

Abstract:In this paper we study quasiconformal curves which are a special case of quasiregular curves. Namely embeddings $\Omega\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^m$ from some domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}^m$, where $n\leq m$, which belong in a suitable Sobolev class and satisfy a certain distortion inequality for some smooth, closed and non-vanishing $n$-form in $\mathbb{R}^m$. These mappings can be seen as quasiconformal mappings between $\Omega$ and $f(\Omega)$. We prove that a quasiconformal curve always satisfies the analytic definition of quasiconformal mappings and the lower half of the modulus inequality. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for a quasiconformal curve to satisfy the metric definition of quasiconformal mappings. We also show that a quasiconformal map from $\Omega$ to $f(\Omega)\subset \mathbb{R}^m$ is a quasiconformal $\omega$ curve for some form $\omega$ under suitable assumptions. Finally, we show the same is true when we equip the target space $f(\Omega)$ with its intrinsic metric instead of the Euclidean one.

Abstract:We prove a theorem on distortion of cross ratio of four points under the mapping effected by a complex polynomial with restricted critical values. Its corollaries include inequalities involving the absolute value and certain coefficients of a polynomial. In particular, an exact lower bound is established for maximal moduli of critical values of polynomials $P$ of degree $n$ normalized by $P(0)=0$, $P'(0)\ne0$.

New Hausdorff type dimensions and optimal bounds for bilipschitz invariant dimensions

Abstract:We introduce a new family of fractal dimensions by restricting the set of diameters in the coverings in the usual definition of the Hausdorff dimension. Among others, we prove that this family contains continuum many distinct dimensions, and they share most of the properties of the Hausdorff dimension, which answers negatively a question of Fraser. On the other hand, we also prove that among these new dimensions only the Hausdorff dimension behaves nicely with respect to Hölder functions, which supports a conjecture posed by Banaji obtained as a natural modification of Fraser's question. We also consider the supremum of these new dimensions, which turns out to be an other interesting notion of fractal dimension. We prove that among those bilipschitz invariant, monotone dimensions on the compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that agree with the similarity dimension for the simplest self-similar sets, the modified lower dimension is the smallest and when $n=1$ the Assouad dimension is the greatest, and this latter statement is false for $n>1$. This answers a question of Rutar.

Abstract:In 2008, Vallentin made a conjecture involving the least distortion of an embedding of a distance-regular graph into Euclidean space. Vallentin's conjecture implies that for a least distortion Euclidean embedding of a distance-regular graph of diameter $d$, the most contracted pairs of vertices are those at distance $d$. In this paper, we confirm Vallentin's conjecture for several families of distance-regular graphs. We also provide counterexamples to this conjecture, where the largest contraction occurs between pairs of vertices at distance $d{-}1$. We suggest three alternative conjectures and prove them for several families of distance-regular graphs.

Abstract:We consider mappings satisfying an upper bound for the distortion of families of curves. We establish lower bounds for the distortion of distances under such mappings. As applications, we obtain theorems on the discreteness of the limit mapping of a sequence of mappings converging locally uniformly. Abstract:We study the dimension theory of limit sets of iterated function systems consisting of a countably infinite number of conformal contractions. Our focus is on the Assouad type dimensions, which give information about the local structure of sets. Under natural separation conditions, we prove a formula for the Assouad dimension and prove sharp bounds for the Assouad spectrum in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set and dimensions of the set of fixed points of the contractions. The Assouad spectra of the family of examples which we use to show that the bounds are sharp display interesting behaviour, such as having two phase transitions. Our results apply in particular to sets of real or complex numbers which have continued fraction expansions with restricted entries, and to certain parabolic attractors.

Abstract:We consider a strengthening of the usual quasiconvexity condition of Morrey in two dimensions, which allows us to prove lower semicontinuity for functionals which are unbounded as the determinant vanishes. This notion, that we call principal quasiconvexity, arose from the planar theory of quasiconformal mappings and mappings of finite distortion. We compare it with other quasiconvexity conditions that have appeared in the literature and provide a number of concrete examples of principally quasiconvex functionals that are not polyconvex. The Stoilow factorization, that in the context of maps of integrable distortion was developed by Iwaniec and Šverák, plays a prominent role in our approach.

Abstract:Odell and Schlumprecht solved the distortion problem by proving that the classic sequence spaces $\ell_p$ for $1<p<\infty$ admit an inevitable biorthogonal system. In particular, these spaces are arbitrarily distortable. Later, Maurey extended the result to asymptotic $\ell_p$-spaces while Tomczak-Jaegermann did likewise for the Schatten classes. We observe that the Kalton-Peck spaces $Z_p$ for $1<p<\infty$ admit an inevitable biorthogonal system. Therefore, we may add this classic family to the list of arbitrarily distortable spaces.

Abstract:Distortion is a fundamental well-studied topic in dimension reduction papers, and intimately related with the underlying intrinsic dimension of a mapping of a high dimensional data set onto a lower dimension. In this paper, we study embedding distortions produced by Correspondence Analysis and its robust l1 variant Taxicab Correspondence analysis, which are visualization methods for contingency tables. For high dimensional data, distortions in Correspondence Analysis are contractions; while distortions in Taxicab Correspondence Analysis could be contractions or stretchings. This shows that Euclidean geometry is quite rigid, because of the orthogonality property; while Taxicab geometry is quite flexible, because the orthogonality property is replaced by the conjugacy property.

Abstract:Sobolev mappings exhibiting only pointwise quasiregularity-type bounds have arisen in various applications, leading to a recently developed theory of quasiregular values. In this article, we show that by using rescaling, one obtains a direct bridge between this theory and the classical theory of quasiregular maps. More precisely, we prove that a non-constant mapping $f \colon \Omega \to \mathbb{R}^n$ with a $(K, \Sigma)$-quasiregular value at $f(x_0)$ can be rescaled at $x_0$ to a non-constant $K$-quasiregular mapping. Our proof of this fact involves establishing a quasiregular values -version of the linear distortion bound of quasiregular mappings. A quasiregular values variant of the small $K$ -theorem is obtained as an immediate corollary of our main result.

Abstract:Abstract Given a homeomorphism f : X → Y f:X\to Y between Q Q -dimensional spaces X , Y X,Y , we show that f f satisfying the metric definition of quasiconformality outside suitable exceptional sets implies that f f belongs to the Sobolev class N loc 1 , p ( X ; Y ) {N}_{{\rm{loc}}}^{1,p}\left(X;\hspace{0.33em}Y) , where 1 ≤ p ≤ Q 1\le p\le Q , and also implies one direction of the geometric definition of quasiconformality. Unlike previous results, we only assume a pointwise version of Ahlfors Q Q -regularity, which in particular enables various weighted spaces to be included in the theory. Notably, even in the classical Euclidean setting, we are able to obtain new results using this approach. In particular, in spaces including the Carnot groups, we are able to prove the Sobolev regularity f ∈ N loc 1 , Q ( X ; Y ) f\in {N}_{{\rm{loc}}}^{1,Q}\left(X;\hspace{0.33em}Y) without the strong assumption of the infinitesimal distortion h f {h}_{f} belonging to L ∞ ( X ) {L}^{\infty }\left(X) .
