Abstract:We compare various concepts of attractor in the context of non-autonomous dynamical systems. Then, we prove an appropriate version of the Pliss reduction principle for non-autonomous differential systems with rapidly oscillating coefficients.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a nonautonomous differential inclusion modeling a reaction-diffusion equation with a discontinuous nonlinearity. We obtain first several properties concerning the uniqueness and regularity of non-negative solutions. Then we study the structure of the pullback attractor in the positive cone, showing that it consists of the zero solution, the unique positive nonautonomous equilibrium and the heteroclinic connections between them, which can be expressed in terms of the solutions of an associated linear problem. Finally, we analyze the relationship of the pullback attractor with the uniform, the cocycle and the skew product semiflow attractors.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of global attractors for a class of discrete dynamical systems naturally originated from impulsive dynamical systems. We establish sufficient conditions for the existence of a discrete global attractor. Moreover, we investigate the relationship among different types of global attractors, i.e., the attractor of a continuous dynamical system, the attractor of an impulsive dynamical system and the attractor of a discrete dynamical system. Two applications are presented, one involving an integrate-and-fire neuron model, and the other involving a nonlinear reaction-diffusion initial boundary value problem.

Abstract:This book treats the theory of pullback attractors for non-autonomous dynamical systems. While the emphasis is on infinite-dimensional systems, the results are also applied to a variety of finite-dimensional examples. The purpose of the book is to provide a summary of the current theory, starting with basic definitions and proceeding all the way to state-of-the-art results. As such it is intended as a primer for graduate students, and a reference for more established researchers in the field. The basic topics are existence results for pullback attractors, their continuity under perturbation, techniques for showing that their fibres are finite-dimensional, and structural results for pullback attractors for small non-autonomous perturbations of gradient systems (those with a Lyapunov function). The structural results stem from a dynamical characterisation of autonomous gradient systems, which shows in particular that such systems are stable under perturbation. Application of the structural results relies on the continuity of unstable manifolds under perturbation, which in turn is based on the robustness of exponential dichotomies: a self-contained development of these topics is given in full. After providing all the necessary theory the book treats a number of model problems in detail, demonstrating the wide applicability of the definitions and techniques introduced: these include a simple Lotka-Volterra ordinary differential equation, delay differential equations, the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, general reaction-diffusion problems, a non-autonomous version of the Chafee-Infante problem, a comparison of attractors in problems with perturbations to the diffusion term, and a non-autonomous damped wave equation. Abstract:Attractor dynamics is a crucial problem for attractor neural networks, as it is the underling computational mechanism for memory storage and retrieval in neural systems. This brief studies a class of attractor network consisting of linearized threshold neurons, and analyzes global attractors based on a parameterized 2-D model. On the basis of previous results on nondegenerate and degenerate equilibria in mathematics, we further elucidate all possible nontrivial global attractors. Our theoretical result provides precise descriptions on how the changes of network parameters affect the attractors' distribution and landscape, and it may give a feasible solution towards specifying attractors by specifying weights. Simulations are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish theoretical results on the stability of random regular attractors. First, we introduce a backward regular attractor, which is a new type of attractor defined by a minimal backward pullback attracting set. We then establish an existence theorem for such an attractor, and prove it is long time stable. Eventually, we prove the long time stability of regular pullback random attractors. As an application, we consider stochastic non-autonomous Newton-Boussinesq equations with variable and distributed delays. Since solutions of the equations have no higher regularity, we prove their regular asymptotic compactness via the spectrum decomposition technique.

Monotone Multivalued Nonautonomous Dynamical Systems

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of nonautonomous multivalued semiflows and their associated pullback attractors. For this kind of dynamical systems we are able to characterize the upper and lower bounds of the attractor as complete trajectories belonging to the attractor, so that all the internal dynamics is confined in this region, which can be described as an interval due to the orderly nature of the processes. Thus, we are able to generalize to this framework previous general results in literature for autonomous multivalued flows or nonautonomous differential equations. We apply our results to a partial differential inclusion with a nonautonomous term, also proving the upper semicontinuity dependence of pullback and global attractors when the time dependent term asymptotically converges to an autonomous multivalued term.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:The global attractor of a dissipative dynamical system provides the necessary information to understand the asymptotic dynamics of all the system's solutions. A crucial question consists in finding the structure of this set. In this paper we provide a full characterization of the structure of attractors for a planar non-autonomous Lotka–Volterra cooperative system. We show sufficient conditions for the existence of forward attractors and give a full description of them by proving the existence of such bounded global solutions that all bounded global solutions join them, i.e. converge towards them when time tends to plus and minus infinity. These results generalize those known in an autonomous framework. The case of particular interest in our work is the situation where globally forward-stable non-autonomous solutions have both coordinates strictly positive. We study this case in detail and obtain sufficient conditions that the problem parameters must satisfy in order to obtain various structures of non-autonomous attractors. This allows us to understand different paths of the solutions towards the unique globally stable one.

Abstract:We present some rigorous results on the absence of a wide class of invariant measures for dynamical systems possessing attractors. We then consider a generalization of the classical nonholonomic Suslov problem which shows how previous investigations of existence of invariant measures for nonholonomic systems should necessarily be extended beyond the class of measures with strictly positive $C^1$ densities if one wishes to determine dynamical obstructions to the presence of attractors.

It discusses the classical and modern results of the theory of attractors for dissipative PDEs, including attractors for autonomous and non-autonomous equations, dynamical systems in general topological spaces, various types of trajectory, pullback and random attractors, exponential attractors, determining functionals and inertial manifolds, as well as the dimension theory for the classes of attractors mentioned above. The theoretical results are illustrated by a number of clarifying examples and counterexamples. Bibliography: 248 titles.

Abstract:Non-autonomous differential equations exhibit a highly intricate dynamics, and various concepts have been introduced to describe their qualitative behavior. In general, it is rare to obtain time dependent invariant compact attracting sets when time goes to plus infinity. Moreover, there are only a few papers in the literature that explore the geometric structure of such sets. In this paper we investigate the long time behaviour of cooperative $n$-dimensional non-autonomous Lotka-Volterra systems is population dynamics. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a globally stable (forward in time) entire solution in which one species becomes extinct, or where all species except one become extinct. Furthermore, we obtain the precise geometrical structure of the non-autonomous forward attractor in one, two, and three dimensions by establishing heteroclinic connections between the globally stable solution and the semi-stable solutions in cases of species permanence and extinction. We believe that understanding time-dependent forward attractors paves the way for a comprehensive analysis of both transient and long-term behavior in non-autonomous phenomena.

Non-equilibrium attractor for non-linear stochastic dynamics

Abstract:We study the dynamical behaviour of mesoscopic systems in contact with a thermal bath, described either via a non-linear Langevin equation at the trajectory level -- or the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for the probability distribution function at the ensemble level. Our focus is put on one-dimensional -- or $d$-dimensional isotropic -- systems in confining potentials, with detailed balance -- fluctuation-dissipation thus holds, and the stationary probability distribution has the canonical form at the bath temperature. When quenching the bath temperature to low enough values, a far-from-equilibrium state emerges that rules the dynamics over a characteristic intermediate timescale. Such a long-lived state has a Dirac-delta probability distribution function and attracts all solutions over this intermediate timescale, in which the initial conditions are immaterial while the influence of the bath is still negligible. Numerical evidence and qualitative physical arguments suggest that the above picture extends to higher-dimensional systems, with anisotropy and interactions.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a non-autonomous Lamé lattice system with displacement-depedent damping. First, we formulate the problem in an appropriate space and show the existence of global solutions. Then, we prove the existence of a pullback attractor for the associated evolution process. Finally, we analyze the upper semicontinuity of pullback attractors when the parameter , where and are the Lamé constants, goes to zero.

Abstract:We consider the long-time global dynamics of non-autonomous Oregonator systems. This system is a coupled system of three reaction-diffusion equations, that arises from the Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction. We first present some sufficient conditions for the existence of pullback and uniform exponential attractors for non-autonomous dynamical system. Then, we apply abstract results to prove the existence of a pullback exponential attractor for Oregonator systems affected by time-dependent forces and a uniform exponential attractor for Oregonator systems driven by quasi-periodic external forces.

Tracking nonautonomous attractors in singularly perturbed systems of ODEs with dependence on the fast time

Abstract:New results on the behaviour of the fast motion in slow-fast systems of ODEs with dependence on the fast time are given in terms of tracking of nonautonomous attractors. Under quite general assumptions, including the uniform ultimate boundedness of the solutions of the layer problems, inflated pullback attractors are considered. In general, one cannot disregard the inflated version of the pullback attractor, but it is possible under the continuity of the fiber projection map of the attractor. %In particular this happens when the attractors of the layer problems are copies of the base, which is the counterpart of an asymptotically stable equilibrium point in the autonomous case. The problem of the limit of the solutions of the slow-fast system at each fixed positive value of the slow time is also treated and in this formulation the critical set is given by the union of the fibers of the pullback attractors. The results can be seen as extensions of the classical Tikhonov theorem to the nonautonomous setting.

Abstract:The study of qualitative properties of random and stochastic differential equations is now one of the most active fields in the modern theory of dynamical systems. In the deterministic case, the properties of flattening and squeezing in infinite-dimensional autonomous dynamical systems require the existence of a bounded absorbing set and imply the existence of a global attractor. The flattening property involves the behaviour of individual trajectories while the squeezing property involves the difference of trajectories. It is shown here that the flattening property is implied by the squeezing property and is in fact weaker, since the attractor in a system with the flattening property can be infinite-dimensional, whereas it is always finite-dimensional in a system with the squeezing property. The flattening property is then generalized to random dynamical systems, for which it is called the pullback flattening property. It is shown to be weaker than the random squeezing property, but equivalent to pullback asymptotic compactness and pullback limit-set compactness, and thus implies the existence of a random attractor. The results are also valid for deterministic non-autonomous dynamical systems formulated as skew-product flows.

Abstract:The usual Langevin approach to describe systems driven by noise fails to describe the long time behavior of systems with multiple attractors. The solution of the associated linear Fokker-Planck equation is always unique, even though it might show one or more maxima. In this context, it is customary to call transitions to changes in the shape of the equilibrium distribution function and relate the maxima to the attractors. Some years ago, a theory was developed for a system with interacting elements or subunits that, starting from the Langevin description of all the variables, leads to bifurcating \textquotedblleft one-particle\textquotedblright\, distribution functions when the number of elements tends to infinity. In this paper, a mean-field hypothesis has been used to deal with systems with a finite number of elements. We carry out numerical simulations yielding bifurcation solutions for the probability density of a collective variable. We also compare the results of the mean-field hypothesis with those obtained with the Langevin approach for finite systems.

Abstract:This technical note establishes several versions of invariance principles for describing the eventual dynamical behaviors of discrete dynamical systems. Instead of the requirement of the so-called Lyapunov functions in the classical LaSalle invariance principle, some more relaxed conditions are imported. The established invariance principles thus can be applied to a more general class of discrete dynamical systems for classifying their orbits into two categories based on the eventual dynamical behaviors, and the proposed classification scheme is suitable for theoretically and numerically estimating the local or global attractors produced by the discrete dynamical systems. The practical usefulness of the analytical results is verified by systematically investigating several representative discrete systems.
