Abstract:We present an analysis of a system of weakly coupled Hubbard chains based on combining an exact study of spectral functions of the uncoupled-chain system with a renormalization group method for the coupled chains. For low values of the onsite repulsion U and of the doping δ, the leading instability is towards a superconducting state. The process includes excited states above a small correlation pseudogap. Similar features appear in extended Hubbard models in the vicinity of commensurate fillings. Our theoretical predictions are consistent with the phase diagram observed in the (TMTTF)2X and (TMTSF)2X series of organic compounds.

Abstract:To date, the Hubbard model and its strong coupling limit, the t-J model, serve as the canonical model for strongly correlated electron systems in solids. Approximating the Coulomb interaction by only the on-site term (Hubbard U-term), however, may not be sufficient to describe the essential physics of interacting electron systems. We develop a more complete model in which all the next leading order terms besides the on-site term are retained. Moreover, we discuss how the inclusion of these neglected interaction terms in the Hubbard model changes the t-J model.

Abstract:The study of electronic correlation in multiple layer materials provides an opportunity to understand the different pairing mechanism, their importance can be traced to the discovery of high Tc superconductors, superconductivity for a magic-angle in graphene lattices and others. In this work, we analyzed the two-interacting fermions in two-coupled periodic chains (ladder) within an attractive or repulsive potential, we obtain an analytical solution using the real-space mapping method. This real-space method is based on mapping the correlated many-body problem onto an equivalent tight-binding problem in a higher dimensional space. With this in mind, our ladder problem maps into a one-particle four dimensional lattice, which finally can be projected into an effective lattice of states in three dimensions. Two kind of solutions have been found, the antisymmetrical solution, which reduce the problem to two independent linear chains (one without impurities and the other with a central impurity) and the symmetrical solution corresponding to a ladder with an impurity. The latter solution is quite interesting since it allow us also to observe the new bound-electron pairs for E<0 in a repulsive potential ( U>0 ).

Abstract:A wide variety of experimental platforms, ranging from semiconductor quantum-dot arrays to moiré materials, have recently emerged as powerful quantum simulators for studying the Hubbard model and its variants. Motivated by these developments, here, we investigate a generalization of the Hubbard model which includes the effects of long-range Coulomb interactions. Working on finite-sized two-dimensional square and triangular lattices, we use exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations to probe the magnetic structure of the ground state in the strong-coupling regime, where $U$ (the onsite repulsion) $\gg$ $t$ (the nearest-neighbor hopping). For small electron dopings above the half-filled antiferromagnet, we numerically uncover a rich variety of magnetically ordered states, and in conjunction with theoretical arguments, infer the phase diagram of the system as a function of doping and interaction strengths. In particular, we find that the inclusion of long-range Coulomb interactions induces an instability of high-spin states$\unicode{x2014}$such as the saturated Nagaoka ferromagnet$\unicode{x2014}$towards phase separation and stripe ordering. We also present proposals for the observation of some of our key findings in experiments that would shed further light on this paradigmatic strongly correlated system.

Abstract:Strongly correlated electron systems are generally described by tight-binding lattice Hamiltonians with strong local (onsite) interactions, the most popular being the Hubbard model. Although the half-filled Hubbard model can be simulated by Monte Carlo (MC), physically more interesting cases beyond half-filling are plagued by the sign problem. One therefore should resort to other methods. It was demonstrated recently that a systematic truncation of the set of Dyson-Schwinger equations for correlators of the Hubbard, supplemented by a "covariant" calculation of correlators leads to a convergent series of approximants. The covariance preserves all the Ward identities among correlators describing various condensed matter probes. While first-order (classical), second-order (Hartree-Fock or Gaussian), and third-order (Cubic) covariant approximation were worked out, the fourth-order (quartic) seems too complicated to be effectively calculable in fermionic systems. It turns out that the complexity of the quartic calculation in local interaction models,is manageable computationally. The quartic (Bethe-Salpeter-type) approximation is especially important in 1D and 2D models in which the symmetry-broken state does not exists (the Mermin-Wagner theorem), although strong fluctuations dominate the physics at strong coupling. Unlike the lower-order approximations, it respects the Mermin-Wagner theorem. The scheme is tested and exemplified on the single-band 1D and 2D Hubbard model.
Signatures of metal to insulator crossover in the repulsive Fermi Hubbard model through static correlations

Abstract:Cold atom systems provide a rich platform to realize strongly interacting condensed matter systems, and recent progress in fluorescence imaging technique has enabled identification of nontrivial doublon, singlon, and holon correlation functions. We show that these correlators can be used to identify the conditions under which local moments form in an interacting electronic system. Toward this end, we report a Determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) study of such correlation functions in the two-dimensional repulsive Fermi Hubbard model on a square lattice as a function of doping, interaction strength and temperature. We find definite signatures of the crossover from small U(band regime) to large U(correlated insulator regime). Our key findings are: (1) An opening of a charge gap in the thermodynamic density of states is accompanied by the appearance of temperature insensitive points in the equation of state at finite doping, which can be used to distinguish the band regime in cold atom experiments. (2) Nearest neighbor doublon holon correlations track the opening of charge gap; these compete with density correlations to generate moment moment correlations that show different behavior in the metallic and correlated insulator regime. (3) Non local correlation functions can be used to distinguish between the two regimes, both at and away from half filling. Our results allow comparisons of different correlation functions with recent experimental findings and guide further experimental investigations.

Abstract:We use the composite operator method (COM) to analyze the strongly correlated repulsive Hubbard model, investigating the effect of nearest-neighbor hoppings up to fourth order on a square lattice. We consider two sets of self-consistent equations, one enforcing the Pauli principle and the other imposing charge-charge, spin-spin, and pair-pair correlations using a decoupling scheme developed by L. Roth. We extract three distinct solutions from these equations: COM1 and COM2 by imposing the Pauli principle and one from Roth decoupling. An overview of the method studying the validity of particle-hole symmetry and the Luttinger theorem for each solution is presented. Additionally, we extend the initial basis to study superconductivity, concluding that it is induced by the Van Hove singularity. Finally, we include higher-order hoppings using realistic estimates for tight binding parameters and compare our results with ARPES measurements on cuprates.

Abstract:Strong correlation effects, such as a dramatic increase in the effective mass of the carriers of electricity, recently observed in the low density electron gas have provided spectacular support for the existence of a sharp metal-insulator transitions in dilute two dimensional electron gases. Here we show that strong correlations, normally expected only for narrow integer filled bands, can be effectively enhanced even far away from integer filling, due to incipient charge ordering driven by non-local Coulomb interactions. This general mechanism is illustrated by solving an extended Hubbard model using dynamical mean-field theory. Our findings account for the key aspects of the experimental phase diagram, and reconcile the early view points of Wigner and Mott. The interplay of short range charge order and local correlations should result in a three peak structure in the spectral function of the electrons which should be observable in tunneling and optical spectroscopy.

Abstract:We present a non-standard Hubbard model applicable to arbitrary single-particle potential profiles and inter-particle interactions. Our approach involves a novel treatment of Wannier functions, free from the ambiguities of conventional methods and applicable to finite systems without periodicity constraints. To ensure the consistent evaluation of Wannier functions, we develop a perturbative approach, utilizing the barrier penetration coefficient as a perturbation parameter. With the newly defined Wannier functions as a basis, we derive the Hubbard Hamiltonian, revealing the emergence of density-induced and pair tunneling terms alongside standard contributions. Our investigation demonstrates that long-range inter-particle interactions can induce a novel mechanism for repulsive particle pairing. This mechanism relies on the effective suppression of single-particle tunneling due to density-induced tunneling. Contrary to expectations based on the standard Hubbard model, an increase in inter-particle interaction does not lead to an insulating state. Instead, our proposed mechanism implies the coherent motion of correlated electron pairs, similar to bound states within a multi-well system, resistant to decay from single-electron tunneling transitions. These findings carry significant implications for various phenomena, including the formation of flat bands, the emergence of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene, and the possibility of a novel metal-insulator transition.

Exact solution of the 1D Hubbard model in the atomic limit with inter-site magnetic coupling

Abstract:In this paper we present for the first time the exact solution in the narrow-band limit of the 1D extended Hubbard model with nearest-neighbour spin-spin interactions described by an exchange constant J. An external magnetic field h is also taken into account. This result has been obtained in the framework of the Green's functions formalism, using the Composite Operator Method. By means of this theoretical background, we have studied some relevant features such as double occupancy, magnetization, spin-spin and charge-charge correlation functions and derived a phase diagram for both ferro (J>0) and anti-ferro (J<0) coupling in the limit of zero temperature. We also report a study on density of states, specific heat, charge and spin susceptibilities. In the limit of zero temperature, we show that the model exhibits a very rich phase diagram characterized by different magnetic orders and by the coexistence of charge and spin orderings at commensurate filling. Moreover, our analysis at finite temperature of density of states and response functions shows the presence of low-temperature charge and spin excitations near the phase boundaries.

Abstract:We present improvements of a recently introduced numerical method [Arrigoni etal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 086403 (2013)] to compute steady state properties of strongly correlated electronic systems out of equilibrium. The method can be considered as a non-equilibrium generalization of exact diagonalization based dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The key modification for the non-equilibrium situation consists in addressing the DMFT impurity problem within an auxiliary system consisting of the correlated impurity, $N_b$ uncorrelated bath sites and two Markovian environments (sink and reservoir). Algorithmic improvements in the impurity solver allow to treat efficiently larger values of $N_b$ than previously in DMFT. This increases the accuracy of the results and is crucial for a correct description of the physical behavior of the system in the relevant parameter range including a semi-quantitative description of the Kondo regime. To illustrate the approach we consider a monoatomic layer of correlated orbitals, described by the single-band Hubbard model, attached to two metallic leads. The non-equilibrium situation is driven by a bias-voltage applied to the leads. For this system, we investigate the spectral function and the steady state current-voltage characteristics in the weakly as well as in the strongly interacting limit. In particular we investigate the non-equilibrium behavior of quasi-particle excitations within the Mott gap of the correlated layer. We find for low bias voltage Kondo like behavior in the vicinity of the insulating phase. In particular we observe a splitting of the Kondo resonance as a function of the bias voltage.

Abstract:We study mesoscopic fluctuations in a system in which there is a continuous connection between two distinct Fermi liquids, asking whether the mesoscopic variation in the two limits is correlated. The particular system studied is an Anderson impurity coupled to a finite mesoscopic reservoir described by the random matrix theory, a structure which can be realized using quantum dots. We use the slave boson mean-field approach to connect the levels of the uncoupled system to those of the strong-coupling Nozieres' Fermi liquid. Extended Hubbard model on a C$_{20}$ molecule

Abstract:The electronic correlations on a C$_{20}$ molecule, as described by an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with a nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction of strength $V$, are studied using quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization methods. For electron doped C$_{20}$, it is known that pair-binding arising from a purely electronic mechanism is absent within the standard Hubbard model (V=0). Here we show that this is also the case for hole doping for $0<U/t\leq 3$ and that, for both electron and hole doping, the effect of a non-zero $V$ is to work against pair-binding. We also study the magnetic properties of the neutral molecule, and find transitions between spin singlet and triplet ground states for either fixed $U$ or $V$ values. In addition, spin, charge and pairing correlation functions on C$_{20}$ are computed. The spin-spin and charge-charge correlations are very short-range, although a weak enhancement in the pairing correlation is observed for a distance equal to the molecular diameter.

Abstract:We study by dynamical mean field theory the ground state of a quarter-filled Hubbard model of two bands with different bandwidths. At half-filling, this model is known to display an orbital selective Mott transition, with the narrower band undergoing Mott localisation while the wider one being still itinerant. At quarter-filling, the physical behaviour is different and to some extent reversed. The interaction generates an effective crystal field splitting, absent in the Hamiltonian, that tends to empty the narrower band in favour of the wider one, which also become more correlated than the former at odds with the orbital selective paradigm. Upon increasing the interaction, the depletion of the narrower band can continue till it empties completely and the system undergoes a topological Lifshitz transition into a half-filled single-band metal that eventually turns insulating. Alternatively, when the two bandwidths are not too different, a first order Mott transition intervenes before the Lifshitz's one. The properties of the Mott insulator are significantly affected by the interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Extended Metal-Insulator Crossover with Strong Antiferromagnetic Spin Correlation in Half-Filled 3D Hubbard Model

Abstract:The Hubbard model at temperature above the Néel transition, despite of being a paramagnet, can exhibit rich physics due to the interplay of Fermi surface, on-site interaction $U$ and thermal fluctuations. Nevertheless, the understanding of the crossover physics remains only at a qualitative level, because of the intrinsically smooth behavior. Employing an improved variant of the {\it numerically exact} auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo algorithm equipped with numerical analytic continuation, we obtain a broad variety of static and dynamical properties of the three-dimensional (3D) Hubbard model at half filling, quantitatively determine the crossover boundaries, and observe that the metal-insulator crossover state, in which antiferromagnetic spin correlations appear strongest, exists over an extended regime in between the metallic state for small $U$ and the Mott insulator for large $U$. In particular, the Widom line, corresponding to the most rapid suppression of double occupancy as $U$ increases, is found to fully reside in the metallic Fermi liquid regime, in contrast to the conventional intuition that it is a representative feature for entering the Mott insulator. Beside providing a reliable methology for numerical study of crossover physics, our work can serve as a timely and important guideline for the most recent optical lattice experiments.

Abstract:The Hubbard model is an essential tool for understanding many-body physics in condensed matter systems. Artificial lattices of dopants in silicon are a promising method for the analog quantum simulation of extended Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonians in the strong interaction regime. However, complex atom-based device fabrication requirements have meant emulating a tunable two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian in silicon has not been achieved. Here, we fabricate 3 × 3 arrays of single/few-dopant quantum dots with finite disorder and demonstrate tuning of the electron ensemble using gates and probe the many-body states using quantum transport measurements. By controlling the lattice constants, we tune the hopping amplitude and long-range interactions and observe the finite-size analogue of a transition from metallic to Mott insulating behavior. We simulate thermally activated hopping and Hubbard band formation using increased temperatures. As atomically precise fabrication continues to improve, these results enable a new class of engineered artificial lattices to simulate interactive fermionic models.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Correlated states have emerged in low-dimensional systems owing to enhanced Coulomb interactions. Elucidating these states requires atomic-scale characterization and delicate control capabilities. Herein, spectroscopic imaging-scanning tunneling microscopy was employed to investigate the correlated states residing in 1D electrons of the monolayer and bilayer MoSe2 mirror twin boundary (MTB). The Coulomb energies, determined by the wire length, drive the MTB into two types of ground states with distinct respective out-of-phase and in-phase charge orders. The two ground states can be reversibly converted through a metastable zero-energy state with in situ voltage pulses, which tune the electron filling of the MTB via a polaronic process, substantiated by first-principles calculations. Our Hubbard model calculation with an exact diagonalization method reveals the ground states as correlated insulators from an on-site U-originated Coulomb interaction, dubbed the Hubbard-type Coulomb blockade effect. Our study lays a foundation for understanding and tailoring correlated physics in complex systems.
