Abstract:This paper has an expository nature. We compare the spectral properties (such as boundedness and compactness) of three families of semi-infinite matrices and point out similarities between them. The common feature of these families is that they can be understood as matrices of some linear operations on appropriate Hardy spaces.

Abstract:We consider linear bounded operators acting in Banach spaces with a basis, such operators can be represented by an infinite matrix. We prove that for an invertible operator there exists a sequence of invertible finite-dimensional operators so that the family of norms of their inverses is uniformly bounded. It leads to the fact that solutions of finite-dimensional equations converge to the solution of initial operator equation with infinite-dimensional matrix.

New matrices for spectral hypergraph theory, II

Abstract:The properties of a hypergraph explored through the spectrum of its unified matrix was made by the authors in [26]. In this paper, we introduce three different hypergraph matrices: unified Laplacian matrix, unified signless Laplacian matrix, and unified normalized Laplacian matrix, all defined using the unified matrix. We show that these three matrices of a hypergraph are respectively identical to the Laplacian matrix, signless Laplacian matrix, and normalized Laplacian matrix of the associated graph. This allows us to use the spectra of these hypergraph matrices as a means to connect the structural properties of the hypergraph with those of the associated graph. Additionally, we introduce certain hypergraph structures and invariants during this process, and relate them to the eigenvalues of these three matrices.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:In this paper we derive families of Gershgorin-type inclusion sets for the spectra and pseudospectra of finite matrices. In common with previous generalisations of the classical Gershgorin bound for the spectrum, our inclusion sets are based on a block decomposition. In contrast to previous generalisations that treat the matrix as a perturbation of a block-diagonal submatrix, our arguments treat the matrix as a perturbation of a block-tridiagonal matrix, which can lead to sharp spectral bounds, as we show for the example of large Toeplitz matrices. Our inclusion sets, which take the form of unions of pseudospectra of square or rectangular submatrices, build on our own recent work on inclusion sets for bi-infinite matrices [Chandler-Wilde, Chonchaiya, Lindner, {\em J. Spectr. Theory} {\bf 14}, 719--804 (2024)].

Abstract:A class of matrices, called $\infty $-radial matrices (1-radial matrices) whose spectral radius equals their $\infty $-norm (1-norm), is proposed in this paper and some theoretical results are established to give several necessary and sufficient conditions of this class of matrices. Then, some properties of this class of matrices are presented. Finally, some applications of this class of matrices in the linear discrete dynamic systems are studied such that the zero solution of the linear discrete dynamic systems is asymptotically stable.

Abstract:The interplay between the algebraic and analytic properties of a matrix and the geometric properties of its pseudospectrum is investigated. It is shown that one can characterize Hermitian matrices, positive semi-definite matrices, orthogonal projections, unitary matrices, etc. in terms of the pseudospectrum. Also, characterizations are given to maps on matrices leaving invariant the pseudospectrum of the sum, difference, or product of matrix pairs. It is shown that such a map is always a unitary similarity transform followed by some simple operations such as adding a constant matrix, taking the matrix transpose, or multiplying by a scalar in {1,-1}.
Stable Rank and Intrinsic Dimension of Real and Complex Matrices

Abstract:We compare the properties of the stable rank and intrinsic dimension of real and complex matrices to those of the classical rank. Basic proofs and examples illustrate that the stable rank does not satisfy any of the fundamental rank properties, while the intrinsic dimension satisfies a few. In particular, the stable rank and intrinsic dimension of a submatrix can exceed those of the original matrix; adding a Hermitian positive semi-definite matrix can lower the intrinsic dimension of the sum; and multiplication by a nonsingular matrix can drastically change the stable rank and the intrinsic dimension. We generalize the concept of stable rank to the p-stable in a Schatten p-norm, thereby unifying the concepts of stable rank and intrinsic dimension: The stable rank is the 2-stable rank, while the intrinsic dimension is the 1-stable rank of a Hermitian positive semi-definite matrix. We derive sum and product inequalities for the pth root of the p-stable rank, and show that it is well-conditioned in the norm-wise absolute sense. The conditioning improves if the matrix and the perturbation are Hermitian positive semi-definite.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a particular class of matrices. We study the concept of a matrix to be balanced. We study some properties of this concept in the context of matrix operations. We examine the behaviour of various matrix statistics in this setting. The crux will be to understanding the determinants and the eigen-values of balanced matrices. It turns out that there does exist a direct communication among the leading entry, the trace, determinants and, hence, the eigen-values of these matrices of order $2\times 2$. These matrices have an interesting property that enables us to predict their quadratic forms, even without knowing their entries but given their spectrum.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a matrix for mixed graphs, called the integrated adjacency matrix. This matrix uniquely determines a mixed graph. Additionally, we associate an (undirected) graph with each mixed graph, enabling the spectral analysis of the integrated adjacency matrix to connect the structural properties of the mixed graph and its associated graph. Furthermore, we define certain mixed graph structures and establish their relationships to the eigenvalues of the integrated adjacency matrix.

Abstract:Let Mn(R) be the linear space of all n×n matrices over the real field R. For any A∈Mn(R), let ρ(A) and ‖A‖∞ denote the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A, respectively. By introducing a class of transformations φa on Mn(R), we show that, for any A∈Mn(R), ρ(A)<‖A‖∞ if φ‖A‖∞n(A)=0. If A∈Mn(R) is nonnegative, we prove that ρ(A)<‖A‖∞ if and only if φ‖A‖∞n(A)=0, and ρ(A)=‖A‖∞ if and only if the transformation φ‖A‖∞ preserves the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A. As an application, we investigate a class of linear discrete dynamic systems in the form of X(k+1)=AX(k). The asymptotical stability of the zero solution of the system is established by a simple algebraic method.

Abstract:This paper provides a characterization of when two expansive matrices yield the same anisotropic local Hardy and inhomogeneous Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. The characterization is in terms of the coarse equivalence of certain quasi-norms associated to the matrices. For nondiagonal matrices, these conditions are strictly weaker than those classifying the coincidence of the corresponding homogeneous function spaces. The obtained results complete the classification of anisotropic Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces associated to general expansive matrices.

Abstract:Fourier matrices naturally appear in many applications and their stability is closely tied to performance guarantees of algorithms. The starting point of this article is a result that characterizes properties of an exponential system on a union of cubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in terms of a general class of Fourier matrices and their extreme singular values. This relationship is flexible in the sense that it holds for any dimension $d$, for many types of exponential systems (Riesz bases, Riesz sequences, or frames) and for Fourier matrices with an arbitrary number of rows and columns. From there, we prove new stability results for Fourier matrices by exploiting this connection and using powerful stability theorems for exponential systems. This paper provides a systematic exploration of this connection and suggests some natural open questions.

Abstract:Most natural matrices that incorporate information about a graph are the adjacency and the Laplacian matrices. These algebraic representations govern the fundamental concepts and tools in graph signal processing even though they reveal information in different ways. Furthermore, in the context of spectral graph classification, the problem of cospectrality may arise and it is not well handled by these matrices. Thus, the question of finding the best graph representation matrix still stands. In this letter, a new family of representations that well captures information about graphs and also allows to find the standard representation matrices, is introduced. This family of unified matrices well captures the graph information and extends the recent works of the literature. Two properties are proven, namely its positive semidefiniteness and the monotonicity of their eigenvalues. Reported experimental results of spectral graph classification highlight the potential and the added value of this new family of matrices, and evidence that the best representation depends upon the structure of the underlying graph.
