Abstract:Let $E \subset \Omega$ be a local almost-minimizer of the relative perimeter in the open set $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$. We prove a free-boundary monotonicity inequality for $E$ at a point $x\in \partial\Omega$, under a geometric property called ``visibility'', that $\Omega$ is required to satisfy in a neighborhood of $x$. Incidentally, the visibility property is satisfied by a considerably large class of Lipschitz and possibly non-smooth domains. Then, we prove the existence of the density of the relative perimeter of $E$ at $x$, as well as the fact that any blow-up of $E$ at $x$ is necessarily a perimeter-minimizing cone within the tangent cone to $\Omega$ at $x$.

Abstract:For a convex set $K\subset \mathbb R^n$ and the associated anisotropic perimeter $P_K$, we establish that every $(\epsilon,\,r)$-minimizer for $P_K$ satisfies a local John property. Furthermore, we prove that a certain class of John domains, including $(\epsilon,\,r)$-minimizers close to $K$, admits a trace inequality. As a consequence, we provide a more concrete proof for a crucial step in the quantitative Wulff inequality, thereby complementing the seminal work of Figalli, Maggi, and Pratelli.

Regularity in shape optimization under convexity constraint

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the regularity of shape optimizers of a class of isoperimetric problems under convexity constraint. We prove that minimizers of the sum of the perimeter and a perturbative term, among convex shapes, are C 1,1-regular. To that end, we define a notion of quasi-minimizer fitted to the convexity context and show that any such quasi-minimizer is C 1,1-regular. The proof relies on a cutting procedure which was introduced to prove similar regularity results in the calculus of variations context. Using a penalization method we are able to treat a volume constraint, showing the same regularity in this case. We go through some examples taken from PDE theory, that is when the perturbative term is of PDE type, and prove that a large class of such examples fit into our C 1,1-regularity result. Finally we provide a counterexample showing that we cannot expect higher regularity in general.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly consider the relative isoperimetric inequalities for minimal submanifolds with free boundary. We first generalize ideas of restricted normal cones introduced by Choe-Ghomi-Ritoré in \cite{CGR06} and obtain an optimal area estimate for generalized restricted normal cones. This area estimate, together with the ABP method of Cabré in \cite{Cabre2008}, provides a new proof of the relative isoperimetric inequality obtained by Choe-Ghomi-Ritoré in \cite{CGR07}. Furthermore, we use this estimate and the idea of Brendle in his recent work \cite{Brendle2019} to obtain a relative isoperimetric inequality for minimal submanifolds with free boundary on a convex support surface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$, which is optimal and gives an affirmative answer to an open problem proposed by Choe in \cite{Choe2005}, Open Problem 12.6, when the codimension $m\leq 2$.

Abstract:We study the relationship between the vertices of an up-monotone polyhedron $R$ and those of the polytope $P$ obtained by truncating $R$ with the unit hypercube. When $R$ has binary vertices, we characterize the vertices of $P$ in terms of the vertices of $R$, show their integrality, and prove that the 1-skeleton of $R$ is an induced subgraph of the 1-skeleton of $P$. We conclude by applying our findings to settle a claim in the original paper.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that there exists a unique perimeter minimizer among all piecewise smooth simple closed curves in $M_{\kappa}^2$ enclosing area $A > 0$ $(A \leq 2{\pi}$ if ${\kappa} = 1)$, and it is a circle in $M_{\kappa}^2$ of radius $AS_{\kappa} \left( \dfrac{ \sqrt{ A ( 4 {\pi} - {\kappa} A ) } }{ 2 {\pi} } \right)$, where $AS_{\kappa}(t) := t$ if ${\kappa} = 0$, arcsin$(t)$ if ${\kappa} = 1$, sinh$^{-1}(t)$ if ${\kappa} =-1$. We also prove the isoperimetric inequality for $M_{\kappa}^2$. We give an elementary geometric proof which is uniform for all three simply connected space forms.

Uniform $C^{1,α}$-regularity for almost-minimizers of some nonlocal perturbations of the perimeter

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a $C^{1,\alpha}$-regularity theorem for almost-minimizers of the functional $\mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon,\gamma}=P-\gamma P_{\varepsilon}$, where $\gamma\in(0,1)$ and $P_{\varepsilon}$ is a nonlocal energy converging to the perimeter as $\varepsilon$ vanishes. Our theorem provides a criterion for $C^{1,\alpha}$-regularity at a point of the boundary which is uniform as the parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to $0$. Since the two terms in the energy are of the same order when $\varepsilon$ is small, we are considering here much stronger nonlocal interactions than those considered in most related works. As a consequence of our regularity result, we obtain that, for $\varepsilon$ small enough, volume-constrained minimizers of $\mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon,\gamma}$ are balls. For small $\varepsilon$, this minimization problem corresponds to the large mass regime for a Gamow-type problem where the nonlocal repulsive term is given by an integrable $G$ with sufficiently fast decay at infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, we give several results on area minimizing surfaces in strictly mean convex 3-manifolds. First, we study the genus of absolutely area minimizing surfaces in a compact, orientable, strictly mean convex 3-manifold M bounded by a simple closed curve in the boundary of M. Our main result is that for any g>=0, the space of simple closed curves in the boundary of M where all the absolutely area minimizing surfaces they bound in M has genus >=g is open and dense in the space A of nullhomologous simple closed curves in the boundary of M. For showing this we prove a bridge principle for absolutely area minimizing surfaces. Moreover, we show that for any g>=0, there exists a curve in A such that the minimum genus of the absolutely area minimizing surfaces it bounds is exactly g. As an application of these results, we further prove that the simple closed curves in the boundary of M bounding more than one minimal surface in M is an open and dense subset of A. We also show that there are disjoint simple closed curves in the boundary of M bounding minimal surfaces in M which are not disjoint. This allows us to answer a question of Meeks, by showing that for any strictly mean convex 3-manifold M, there exists a simple closed curve \Gamma in the boundary of M which bounds a stable minimal surface which is not embedded.

Abstract:The convex shape contained in a disk having prescribed area and maximal perimeter is completely characterized in terms of the area fraction. The solution is always a polygon having all but one sides equal. The lengths of the sides are characterized through explicit equations. Abstract:We show that every bounded domain in a metric measure space can be approximated in measure from inside by closed $BV$-extension sets. The extension sets are obtained by minimizing the sum of the perimeter and the measure of the difference between the domain and the set. By earlier results, in PI-spaces the minimizers have open representatives with locally quasiminimal surface. We give an example in a PI-space showing that the open representative of the minimizer need not be a $BV$-extension domain nor locally John.

Abstract:In this paper we solve several reverse isoperimetric problems in the class of $\lambda$-convex bodies, i.e., convex bodies whose curvature at each point of their boundary is bounded below by some $\lambda > 0$. We give an affirmative answer in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to a conjecture due to Borisenko which states that the $\lambda$-convex lens, i.e., the intersection of two balls of radius $1/\lambda$, is the unique minimizer of volume among all $\lambda$-convex bodies of given surface area. Also, we prove a reverse inradius inequality: in model spaces of constant curvature and arbitrary dimension, we show that the $\lambda$-convex lens (properly defined in non-zero curvature spaces) has the smallest inscribed ball among all $\lambda$-convex bodies of given surface area. This solves a conjecture due to Bezdek on minimal inradius of isoperimetric ball-polyhedra in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:We consider a free boundary problem on three-dimensional cones depending on a parameter c and study when the free boundary is allowed to pass through the vertex of the cone. Combining analysis and computer-assisted proof, we show that when c is less than 0.43, the free boundary may pass through the vertex of the cone.

Abstract:We establish that the Lavrentiev gap between Sobolev and Lipschitz maps does not occur for a scalar variational problem of the form: \[ \textrm{to minimize} \qquad u \mapsto \int_\Omega f(x,u,\nabla u)\text{d}x \,, \] under a Dirichlet boundary condition. Here, $\Omega$ is a bounded Lipschitz open set in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$ and the function $f$ is required to be measurable with respect to the spacial variable, continuous with respect to the second one, and continuous and comparable to convex with respect to the last variable. Moreover, we assume that $f$ satisfies a natural condition balancing the variations with respect to the first variable and the growth with respect to the last one. Remarkably, typical conditions that are usually imposed on $f$ to discard the Lavrentiev gap are dropped here: we do not require $f$ to be bounded or convex with respect to the second variable, nor impose any condition of $\Delta_2$-kind with respect to the last variable.

Search-Space Reduction Via Essential Vertices Revisited: Vertex Multicut and Cograph Deletion

Abstract:For an optimization problem $\Pi$ on graphs whose solutions are vertex sets, a vertex $v$ is called $c$-essential for $\Pi$ if all solutions of size at most $c \cdot OPT$ contain $v$. Recent work showed that polynomial-time algorithms to detect $c$-essential vertices can be used to reduce the search space of fixed-parameter tractable algorithms solving such problems parameterized by the size $k$ of the solution. We provide several new upper- and lower bounds for detecting essential vertices. For example, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for $3$-Essential detection for Vertex Multicut, which translates into an algorithm that finds a minimum multicut of an undirected $n$-vertex graph $G$ in time $2^{O(\ell^3)} \cdot n^{O(1)}$, where $\ell$ is the number of vertices in an optimal solution that are not $3$-essential. Our positive results are obtained by analyzing the integrality gaps of certain linear programs. Our lower bounds show that for sufficiently small values of $c$, the detection task becomes NP-hard assuming the Unique Games Conjecture. For example, we show that ($2-\varepsilon$)-Essential detection for Directed Feedback Vertex Set is NP-hard under this conjecture, thereby proving that the existing algorithm that detects $2$-essential vertices is best-possible.

Abstract:Let $E\subset \mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 2$, be a set of finite perimeter with $|E|=|B|$, where $B$ denotes the unit ball. When $n=2$, since convexification decreases perimeter (in the class of open connected sets), it is easy to prove the existence of a convex set $F$, with $|E|=|F|$, such that $$ P(E) - P(F) \ge c\,|E\Delta F|, \qquad c>0. $$ Here we prove that, when $n\ge 3$, there exists a convex set $F$, with $|E|=|F|$, such that $$ P(E) - P(F) \ge c(n) \,f\big(|E\Delta F|\big), \qquad c(n)>0,\qquad f(t)=\frac{t}{|\log t|} \text{ for }t \ll 1. $$ Moreover, one can choose $F$ to be a small $C^2$-deformation of the unit ball. Furthermore, this estimate is essentially sharp as we can show that the inequality above fails for $f(t)=t.$ Interestingly, the proof of our result relies on a new stability estimate for Alexandrov's Theorem on constant mean curvature sets.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the external visibility coverage for polyhedra under the orthographic viewing model. The problem is to compute whether the whole boundary of a polyhedron is visible from a finite set of view directions, and if so, how to compute a minimal set of such view directions. A global visibility map based method is developed to calculate an optimal or near-optimal solution using object space segmentation and viewpoint space sampling. Our method subdivides the concave regions of a polyhedron into a ground set containing two types of segments: concave regions with non-empty global visibility maps and convex polygons in the concave regions whose global visibility maps are empty. The viewpoint space is sampled using a generate-as-required heuristic. The corresponding visibility matrix is computed based on global visibility calculation. Our problem is then modeled as an instance of the classical set-cover problem and solved using a minimal visible set based branch-and-bound algorithm.
