Abstract:Drawing inspiration from a recent paper of Heuberger, Krenn, and Lipnik, we define the class of strongly k-recursive sequences. We show that every k-automatic sequence is strongly $k$-recursive, therefore k-recursive, and discuss that the converse is not true.

Abstract:We study the notion of an asymptotically automatic sequence, which generalises the notion of an automatic sequence. While $k$-automatic sequences are characterised by finiteness of $k$-kernels, the $k$-kernels of asymptotically $k$-automatic sequences are only required to be finite up to equality almost everywhere. We prove basic closure properties and a linear bound on asymptotic subword complexity, show that results concerning frequencies of symbols are no longer true for the asymptotic analogue, and discuss some classification problems.

Separating measurable recurrence from strong recurrence via rigidity sequences

Abstract:If $G$ is an abelian group, we say $S\subset G$ is a set of recurrence if for every probability measure preserving $G$-system $(X,\mu,T)$ and every $D\subset X$ having $\mu(D)>0$, there is a $g\in S$ such that $\mu(D\cap T^{g}D)>0$. We say $S$ is a set of strong recurrence if for every set $D$ having $\mu(D)>0$ there is a $c>0$ such that $\mu(D\cap T^{g}D)>c$ for infinitely many $g\in S$. We call $S$ measure expanding if for all $g\in G$, the translate $S+g$ is a set of recurrence. A rigidity sequence for $(X,\mu,T)$ is a sequence of elements $s_n\in G$ satisfying $\lim_{n\to\infty} \mu(D\triangle T^{s_n}D)=0$ for all measurable $D\subset X$. For all but countably many countable abelian groups $G$, we prove that if $S$ is measure expanding, there is a sequence of elements $s_n\in S$ such that $\{s_n:n\in \mathbb N\}$ is also measure expanding and every translate of $(s_n)$ is a rigidity sequence for some free weak mixing measure preserving $G$-system. The special case where $S=G$ proves a conjecture of Ackelsberg. As a consequence, we prove that for every countably infinite abelian group $G$ and every measure expanding set $S\subset G$ there is a subset $S'\subset S$ such that $S'$ is measure expanding and no translate of $S'$ is a set of strong recurrence.

Abstract:We study recurrence, and multiple recurrence, properties along the $k$-th powers of a given set of integers. We show that the property of recurrence for some given values of $k$ does not give any constraint on the recurrence for the other powers. This is motivated by similar results in number theory concerning additive basis of natural numbers. Moreover, motivated by a result of Kamae and Mendès-France, that links single recurrence with uniform distribution properties of sequences, we look for an analogous result dealing with higher order recurrence and make a related conjecture.

Pattern Avoidance for Fibonacci Sequences using $k$-Regular Words

Abstract:Two $k$-ary Fibonacci recurrences are $a_k(n) = a_k(n-1) + k \cdot a_k(n-2)$ and $b_k(n) = k \cdot b_k(n-1) + b_k(n-2)$. We provide a simple proof that $a_k(n)$ is the number of $k$-regular words over $[n] = \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ that avoid patterns $\{121, 123, 132, 213\}$ when using base cases $a_k(0) = a_k(1) = 1$ for any $k \geq 1$. This was previously proven by Kuba and Panholzer in the context of Wilf-equivalence for restricted Stirling permutations, and it creates Simion and Schmidt's classic result on the Fibonacci sequence when $k=1$, and the Jacobsthal sequence when $k=2$. We complement this theorem by proving that $b_k(n)$ is the number of $k$-regular words over $[n]$ that avoid $\{122, 213\}$ with $b_k(0) = b_k(1) = 1$ for any~$k \geq 2$. Finally, we conjecture that $|Av^{2}_{n}(\underline{121}, 123, 132, 213)| = a_1(n)^2$ for $n \geq 0$. That is, vincularizing the Stirling pattern in Kuba and Panholzer's Jacobsthal result gives the Fibonacci-squared numbers.

Distinguishing sets of strong recurrence from van der Corput sets

Abstract:Sets of recurrence, which were introduced by Furstenberg, and van der Corput sets, which were introduced by Kamae and Mendés France, as well as variants thereof, are important classes of sets in Ergodic Theory. In this paper, we construct a set of strong recurrence which is not a van der Corput set. In particular, this shows that the class of enhanced van der Corput sets is a proper subclass of sets of strong recurrence. This answers some questions asked by Bergelson and Lesigne.

Abstract:The sequence starts with a(1) = 1; to extend it one writes the sequence so far as XY^k, where X and Y are strings of integers, Y is nonempty and k is as large as possible: then the next term is k. The sequence begins 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, ... A 4 appears for the first time at position 220, but a 5 does not appear until about position 10^{10^{23}}. The main result of the paper is a proof that the sequence is unbounded. We also present results from extensive numerical investigations of the sequence and of certain derived sequences, culminating with a heuristic argument that t (for t=5,6, ...) appears for the first time at about position 2^(2^(3^(4^(5^...^({(t-2)}^{(t-1)}))))), where ^ denotes exponentiation. The final section discusses generalizations.

Abstract:Let ${\bf s} = (s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_n,\ldots)$ be a sequence of positive integers. An ${\bf s}$-inversion sequence of length $n$ is a sequence ${\bf e} = (e_1, e_2, \ldots, e_n)$ of nonnegative integers such that $0 \leq e_i < s_i$ for $1\leq i\leq n$. When $s_i=(i-1)k+1$ for any $i\geq 1$, we call the ${\bf s}$-inversion sequences the $k$-inversion sequences. In this paper, we provide a bijective proof that the ascent number over $k$-inversion sequences of length $n$ is equidistributed with a weighted variant of the ascent number of permutations of order $n$, which leads to an affirmative answer of a question of Savage (2016). A key ingredient of the proof is a bijection between $k$-inversion sequences of length $n$ and $2\times n$ arrays with particular restrictions. Moreover, we present a bijective proof of the fact that the ascent plateau number over $k$-Stirling permutations of order $n$ is equidistributed with the ascent number over $k$-inversion sequences of length $n$.

Abstract:For an integer $q\ge2$, a $q$-recursive sequence is defined by recurrence relations on subsequences of indices modulo some powers of~$q$. In this article, $q$-recursive sequences are studied and the asymptotic behavior of their summatory functions is analyzed. It is shown that every $q$-recursive sequence is $q$-regular in the sense of Allouche and Shallit and that a $q$-linear representation of the sequence can be computed easily by using the coefficients from the recurrence relations. Detailed asymptotic results for $q$-recursive sequences are then obtained based on a general result on the asymptotic analysis of $q$-regular sequences. Three particular sequences are studied in detail: We discuss the asymptotic behavior of the summatory functions of Stern's diatomic sequence, the number of non-zero elements in some generalized Pascal's triangle and the number of unbordered factors in the Thue--Morse sequence. For the first two sequences, our analysis even leads to precise formulæ without error terms.

Abstract:For a fixed integer $k$, we define a sequence $A_k=(a_k(n))_{n\geq0}$ and a corresponding sparse subsequence $S_k$ using the cardinality of the $n$-th symmetric power of the set $\{1,2,\ldots, k\}$. For $k\in\{2,\dots,8\}$, we find recursive formulas for $S_k$, and show that the values $a_{k}(0)$, $a_{k}(1)$, and $a_{k}(3)$ are sufficient for constructing $A_{k}$.

Abstract:In an automatic search, we found conjectural recurrences for some sequences in the OEIS that were not previously recognized as being D-finite. In some cases, we are able to prove the conjectured recurrence. In some cases, we are not able to prove the conjectured recurrence, but we can prove that a recurrence exists. In some remaining cases, we do not know where the recurrence might come from.

Abstract:Fathi and Pageault have recently shown a connection between Auslander's generalized recurrent set $GR(f)$ and Easton's strong chain recurrent set. We study $GR(f)$ by examining that connection in more detail, as well as connections with other notions of recurrence. We give equivalent definitions that do not refer to a metric. In particular, we show that $GR(f^k)=GR(f)$ for any $k>0$, and give a characterization of maps for which the generalized recurrent set is different from the ordinary chain recurrent set.

GateLoop: Fully Data-Controlled Linear Recurrence for Sequence Modeling

Abstract:Linear Recurrence has proven to be a powerful tool for modeling long sequences efficiently. In this work, we show that existing models fail to take full advantage of its potential. Motivated by this finding, we develop GateLoop, a foundational sequence model that generalizes linear recurrent models such as S4, S5, LRU and RetNet, by employing data-controlled state transitions. Utilizing this theoretical advance, GateLoop empirically outperforms existing models for auto-regressive language modeling. Our method comes with a low-cost $O(l)$ recurrent mode and an efficient $O(l \log_{2} l)$ parallel mode making use of highly optimized associative scan implementations. Furthermore, we derive an $O(l^2)$ surrogate attention mode, revealing remarkable implications for Transformer and recently proposed architectures. Specifically, we prove that our approach can be interpreted as providing data-controlled relative-positional information to Attention. While many existing models solely rely on data-controlled cumulative sums for context aggregation, our findings suggest that incorporating data-controlled complex cumulative products may be a crucial step towards more powerful sequence models.

On Certain Recurrent and Automatic Sequences in Finite Fields

Abstract:In this work we extend our study on a link between automaticity and certain algebraic power series over finite fields. Our starting point is a family of sequences in a finite field of characteristic $2$, recently introduced by the first author in connection with algebraic continued fractions. By including it in a large family of recurrent sequences in an arbitrary finite field, we prove its automaticity. Then we give a criterion on automatic sequences, generalizing a previous result and this allows us to present new families of automatic sequences in an arbitrary finite field.
On inverse Goodstein sequences

Abstract:In the late 1980s, Abrusci, Girard and van de Wiele defined a variant of Goodstein sequences: the so-called inverse Goodstein sequence. In their work, they show that it terminates precisely at the Bachmann-Howard ordinal. This reveals that a proof of this fact requires substantial consistency strength. Moreover, the authors could show that sequences of this kind terminate even if the hereditary base change at the heart of their construction is replaced by a generalization using arbitrary dilators. It has been a conjecture by Andreas Weiermann that this more general result has a connection to Bachmann-Howard fixed points and is, therefore, equivalent to one of the most famous strong set existence principles from reverse mathematics: $\Pi^1_1$-comprehension. In this article, we prove this conjecture to be correct. Moreover, we show that the ordinal at which such sequences terminate is, in a fundamental way, isomorphic to the $1$-fixed point of their dilator, a new concept introduced by Freund and Rathjen. This yields explicit notation systems and a general method for specifying such ordinals. Also, using the notation systems provided by $1$-fixed points, we can reproduce the result that the Goodstein sequence terminates at the Bachmann-Howard ordinal in a weak system. Additionally, we perform a similar computation for a variant of Goodstein sequences, which terminates at a predicative ordinal.

Abstract:In this note we introduce several instructive examples of bijections found between several different combinatorially defined sequences of sets. Each sequence has cardinalities given by the Catalan numbers. Our results answer some questions posed by R. Stanley in the addendum to his textbook. We actually discuss two types of bijection, one defined recursively and the other defined in a more local, relative, fashion. It is interesting to compare the results of the two.

Abstract:We first revisit and generalize a known result about a doubly exponential sequence that describes the number of k -ary ordered rooted trees of height h where k≥2 is a fixed integer. Such a sequence has the form (tk(h))h≥0 where tk(h)=c(k)kh−1 for each given k and c(k)∈ R . We provide the first detailed analysis of the real number sequence (c(k))k≥2 and show, in particular, that this sequence is strictly decreasing and has a limit 2 when k tends to infinity. We then turn our attention to a more general setting for sequences that describe the number of ordered rooted trees of a given height. This has applications in algorithm analyses where searches in rooted trees are performed. We consider infinite ordered rooted trees in which each ordered rooted subtree induced by all the vertices on levels h∈ N or less is a finite ordered rooted tree of height h of a certain type. In particular, we study those infinite trees T in which each vertex has infinitely many descendants. We first give a complete characterization of those infinite trees for which the number s(Th) of ordered rooted subtrees Tn of height at most h of T is bounded by a polynomial in h . We then present natural lower and upper bounds for s(Th) and use those to obtain a tight threshold function f(h) for which we have s(Th)=Θ(hf(h)) for infinitely many h∈N . This threshold function can be presented in terms of the Lambert W function; the upper branch of the two inverses of the function w↦wew . Finally, we investigate some theoretical properties of s(Th) for those infinite trees T that have a finite width when viewed as partially ordered sets (posets) with the root as the sole maximum element. In particular, we show that for large enough h the function s(Th) is given by a polynomial in h and we determine the degree and the leading coefficient of this polynomial.

Strong Partially Greedy Bases with respect to An Arbitrary Sequence

Abstract:For Schauder bases, Dilworth et al. introduced and characterized the partially greedy property, which is strictly weaker than the (almost) greedy property. Later, Berasategui et al. defined and studied the strong partially greedy property for general bases. Let $\mathbf n$ be any strictly increasing sequence of positive integers. In this paper, we define the strong partially greedy property with respect to $\mathbf n$, called the ($\mathbf n$, strong partially greedy) property. We give characterizations of this new property, study relations among ($\mathbf n$, strong partially greedy) properties for different sequences $\mathbf n$, establish Lebesgue-type inequalities for the ($\mathbf n$, strong partially greedy) parameter, investigate ($\mathbf n$, strong partially greedy) bases with gaps, and weighted ($\mathbf n$, strong partially greedy) bases, to name a few. Furthermore, we introduce the ($\mathbf n$, almost greedy) property and equate the property to a strengthening of the ($\mathbf n$, strong partially greedy) property. This paper can be viewed both as a survey of recent results regarding strong partially greedy bases and as an extension of these results to an arbitrary sequence instead of $\mathbb{N}$.
