Abstract:The ubiquity of the class of D-finite functions and P-recursive sequences in symbolic computation is widely recognized. In this thesis, the presented work consists of two parts related to this class. In the first part, we generalize the reduction-based creative telescoping algorithms to the hypergeometric setting, which allows to deal with definite sums of hypergeometric terms more quickly. We first modify the Abramov-Petkovsek reduction, and then design a new algorithm to compute minimal telescopers for bivariate hypergeometric terms based on the modified reduction. This new algorithm can avoid the costly computation of certificates, and outperforms the classical Zeilberger algorithm no matter whether certificates are computed or not according to the computational experiments. Moreover, we also derive order bounds for minimal telescopers. These bounds are sometimes better, and never worse than the known ones. In the second part of the thesis, we study the class of D-finite numbers. It consists of the limits of convergent P-recursive sequences. Typically, this class contains many well-known mathematical constants in addition to the algebraic numbers. Our definition of the class of D-finite numbers depends on two subrings of the field of complex numbers. We investigate how different choices of these two subrings affect the class. Moreover, we show that D-finite numbers over the Gaussian rational field are essentially the same as the values of D-finite functions at non-singular algebraic number arguments (so-called the regular holonomic constants). This result makes it easier to recognize certain numbers as belonging to this class.

Abstract:Let π be a minimal Erdös-Szekeres permutation of 1, 2, ..., n 2 , and let l n,k be the length of the longest increasing subsequence in the segment ( π (1), ..., π ( k )). Under uniform measure we establish an exponentially decaying bound of the upper tail probability for l n,k , and as a consequence we obtain a complete convergence, which is an improvement of Romik’s recent result. We also give a precise lower exponential tail for l n,k .

We release the requirement on the telescoper and utilize the congruence of the sequence. With this approach, we are able to confirm a conjecture of Sun and find a new congruence on the central trinomial coefficient.

Abstract:Let $F(n,k)$ be a hypergeometric function that may be expressed so that $n$ appears within initial arguments of inverted Pochhammer symbols, as in factors of the form $\frac{1}{(n)_{k}}$. Only in exceptional cases is $F(n, k)$ such that Zeilberger's algorithm produces a two-term recursion for $\sum_{k = 0}^{\infty} F(n, k)$ obtained via the telescoping of the right-hand side of a difference equation of the form $p_{1}(n) F(n + r, k) + p_{2}(n) F(n, k) = G(n, k+1) - G(n, k)$ for fixed $r \in \mathbb{N}$ and polynomials $p_{1}$ and $p_{2}$. Building on the work of Wilf, we apply a series acceleration technique based on two-term hypergeometric recursions derived via Zeilberger's algorithm. Fast converging series previously given by Ramanujan, Guillera, Chu and Zhang, Chu, Lupaş, and Amdeberhan are special cases of hypergeometric transforms introduced in our article.

Abstract:We propose investigating a summation analog of the paradigm for parallel integration. We make some first steps towards an indefinite summation method applicable to summands that rationally depend on the summation index and a P-recursive sequence and its shifts. There is a distinction between so-called normal and so-called special polynomials. Under the assumption that the corresponding difference field has no unnatural constants, we are able to predict the normal polynomials appearing in the denominator of a potential closed form. We can also handle the numerator. Our method is incomplete so far as we cannot predict the special polynomials appearing in the denominator. However, we do have some structural results about special polynomials for the setting under consideration.

Abstract:We show that, if an integer sequence is given by a linear recurrence of constant rational coefficients, then it can be represented as the difference of two arithmetic terms with exponentiation, which do not contain any irrational constant. We apply our methods to various Lucas sequences including the classical Fibonacci sequence, to the sequence of solutions of the Pell equation and to some natural C-recursive sequences of degree 3.

Abstract:Let $\left(u(n)\right)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ be an arithmetic progression of natural integers in base $b\in\mathbb{N}\setminus \{0,1\}$. We consider the following sequences: $s(n)=\overline{u(0)u(1)\cdots u(n) }^b$ formed by concatenating the first $n+1$ terms of $\left(u(n)\right)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ in base $b$ from the right; $s_r(n) = \overline{u(n)u(n-1)\cdots u(0)}^b$; and $\left(s_*(n)\right)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$, given by $s_*(0)=u(0)$, $s_*(n)=\overline{s_r(n-1)s(n)}^b, n\geq 1$. We construct explicit formulas for these sequences and use basic concepts of linear difference operators to prove they are not P-recursive (holonomic). We also present an alternative proof that follows directly from their definitions. We implemented $\left(s(n)\right)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $\left(s_r(n)\right)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ in the decimal base when $(u(n))_{n\in\mathbb{N}}=\mathbb{N}\setminus \{0\}$.

Efficient recurrence for the enumeration of permutations with fixed pinnacle set

Abstract:Initiated by Davis, Nelson, Petersen and Tenner (2018), the enumerative study of pinnacle sets of permutations has attracted a fair amount of attention recently. In this article, we provide a recurrence that can be used to compute efficiently the number $|\mathfrak{S}_n(P)|$ of permutations of size $n$ with a given pinnacle set $P$, with arithmetic complexity $O(k^4 + k\log n)$ for $P$ of size $k$. A symbolic expression can also be computed in this way for pinnacle sets of fixed size. A weighted sum $q_n(P)$ of $|\mathfrak{S}_n(P)|$ proposed in Davis, Nelson, Petersen and Tenner (2018) seems to have a simple form, and a conjectural form is given recently by Flaque, Novelli and Thibon (2021+). We settle the problem by providing and proving an alternative form of $q_n(P)$, which has a strong combinatorial flavor. We also study admissible orderings of a given pinnacle set, first considered by Rusu (2020) and characterized by Rusu and Tenner (2021), and we give an efficient algorithm for their counting.

Creative Telescoping for Hypergeometric Double Sums

Abstract:We present efficient methods for calculating linear recurrences of hypergeometric double sums and, more generally, of multiple sums. In particular, we supplement this approach with the algorithmic theory of contiguous relations, which guarantees the applicability of our method for many input sums. In addition, we elaborate new techniques to optimize the underlying key task of our method to compute rational solutions of parameterized linear recurrences.

Abstract:Creative telescoping applied to a bivariate proper hypergeometric term produces linear recurrence operators with polynomial coefficients, called telescopers. We provide bounds for the degrees of the polynomials appearing in these operators. Our bounds are expressed as curves in the (r,d)-plane which assign to every order r a bound on the degree d of the telescopers. These curves are hyperbolas, which reflect the phenomenon that higher order telescopers tend to have lower degree, and vice versa.

Abstract:A constant term sequence is a sequence of rational numbers whose $n$-th term is the constant term of $P^n(\boldsymbol{x}) Q(\boldsymbol{x})$, where $P(\boldsymbol{x})$ and $Q(\boldsymbol{x})$ are multivariate Laurent polynomials. While the generating functions of such sequences are invariably diagonals of multivariate rational functions, and hence special period functions, it is a famous open question, raised by Don Zagier, to classify diagonals that are constant terms. In this paper, we provide such a classification in the case of sequences satisfying linear recurrences with constant coefficients. We also consider the case of hypergeometric sequences and, for a simple illustrative family of hypergeometric sequences, classify those that are constant terms.

Abstract:It is an open question of Erdős as to whether the alternating series $\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{(-1)^n n}{p_n}$ is (conditionally) convergent, where $p_n$ denotes the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$ prime. By using a random sifted model of the primes recently introduced by Banks, Ford, and the author, as well as variants of a well known calculation of Gallagher, we show that the answer to this question is affirmative assuming a suitably strong version of the Hardy--Littlewood prime tuples conjecture.

Abstract:We show that the Wynn recurrence (the missing identity of Frobenius of the Padé approximation theory) can be incorporated into the theory of integrable systems as a reduction of the discrete Schwarzian Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation. This allows, in particular, to present the geometric meaning of the recurrence as a construction of the appropriately constrained quadrangular set of points. The interpretation is valid for a projective line over arbitrary skew field what motivates to consider non-commutative Padé theory. We transfer the corresponding elements, including the Frobenius identities, to the non-commutative level using the quasideterminants. Using an example of the characteristic series of the Fibonacci language we present an application of the theory to the regular languages. We introduce the non-commutative version of the discrete-time Toda lattice equations together with their integrability structure. Finally, we discuss application of the Wynn recurrence in a different context of the geometric theory of discrete analytic functions.

Abstract:Let $\cal M$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra equipped with a distinguished faithful, normal, semi-finite trace $\tau$. We introduce the notion of equi-integrability in non-commutative spaces and show that if a rearrangement invariant quasi-Banach function space $E$ on the positive semi-axis is $\alpha$-convex with constant 1 and satisfies a non-trivial lower $q$-estimate with constant 1, then the corresponding non-commutative space of measurable operators $E({\cal M}, \tau)$ has the following property: every bounded sequence in $E({\cal M}, \tau)$ has a subsequence that splits into a $E$-equi-integrable sequence and a sequence with pairwise disjoint projection supports. This result extends the well known Kadec-Pe\l czy\'nski subsequence decomposition for Banach lattices to non-commutative spaces. As applications, we prove that for $1\leq p <\infty$, every subspace of $L^p(\cal M, \tau)$ either contains almost isometric copies of $\ell^p$ or is strongly embedded in $L^p(\cal M, \tau)$.

Abstract:Drawing inspiration from a recent paper of Heuberger, Krenn, and Lipnik, we define the class of strongly k-recursive sequences. We show that every k-automatic sequence is strongly $k$-recursive, therefore k-recursive, and discuss that the converse is not true.

Apéry-like sequences defined by four-term recurrence relations

Abstract:The Apéry numbers may be defined by a cubic three-term recurrence relation, that is, a three-term relation where the coefficients are polynomials in the index of degree $3$. In this work, we first provide a systematic review of Apéry numbers and other related sequences that satisfy quadratic or cubic three-term recurrence relations, and show how they are interrelated and how they may be classified. This leads to sequences defined by cubic $k$-term recurrence relations. The cases corresponding to $k=2$ in this framework lead to Ramanujan's theories of elliptic functions to alternative bases, while the cases corresponding to $k=3$ correspond to the Apéry, Domb, Almkvist--Zudilin numbers and other sequences that are well-studied. We conduct a detailed analysis for the case $k=4$. Some of the sequences that arise are new. Of particular interest are ten sequences that are said to be self-starting in the sense that a single initial condition is enough to start the recurrence relation. Of additional interest are two sequences which take values in $\mathbb{Z}[i]$ and two others with values in $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{2}]$. Congruence properties and asymptotic expansions for the ten self-starting sequences are investigated and several conjectures are presented. For example, we conjecture that the integer-valued sequence defined by the recurrence relation \begin{align*} (n+1)^3T(n+1) &=2(2n+1)(5n^2+5n+2)T(n) \\ &\qquad -8n(7n^2+1)T(n-1)+22n(2n-1)(n-1)T(n-2) \end{align*} and initial condition $T(0)=1$ satisfies a Lucas congruence for every prime $p$. Moreover, the sequence is conjectured to satisfy the supercongruence $$ T(pn) \equiv T(n) \pmod{p^2} \quad\text{for all positive integers $n$} $$ if $p=2,\;59$ or $5581$, and for no other primes $p<10^4$.

Topological recursion for Kadomtsev-Petviashvili tau functions of hypergeometric type

Abstract:We study the $n$-point differentials corresponding to Kadomtsev-Petviashvili tau functions of hypergeometric type (also known as Orlov-Scherbin partition functions), with an emphasis on their $\hbar^2$-deformations and expansions. Under the naturally required analytic assumptions, we prove certain higher loop equations that, in particular, contain the standard linear and quadratic loop equations, and thus imply the blobbed topological recursion. We also distinguish two large families of the Orlov-Scherbin partition functions that do satisfy the natural analytic assumptions, and for these families we prove in addition the so-called projection property and thus the full statement of the Chekhov-Eynard-Orantin topological recursion. A particular feature of our argument is that it clarifies completely the role of $\hbar^2$-deformations of the Orlov-Scherbin parameters for the partition functions, whose necessity was known from a variety of earlier obtained results in this direction but never properly understood in the context of topological recursion. As special cases of the results of this paper one recovers new and uniform proofs of the topological recursion to all previously studied cases of enumerative problems related to weighted double Hurwitz numbers. By virtue of topological recursion and the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula this, in turn, gives new and uniform proofs of almost all ELSV-type formulas discussed in the literature.
