Abstract:A totally symmetric set is a subset of a group such that every permutation of the subset can be realized by conjugation in the group. The (non-)existence of large totally symmetric sets obstruct homomorphisms, so bounds on the sizes of totally symmetric sets are of particular use. In this paper, we prove that if a group has a totally symmetric set of size $k$, it must have order at least $(k+1)!$. We also show that with three exceptions, $\{(1 \; i)\mid i = 2,\ldots,n\} \subset S_n$ is the only totally symmetric set making this bound sharp; it is thus the largest totally symmetric set relative to the size of the ambient group.

Abstract:We classify homotopes of classical symmetric spaces (studied in Part I of this work). Our classification uses the fibered structure of homotopes: they are fibered as symmetric spaces, with flat fibers, over a non-degenerate base; the base spaces correspond to inner ideals in Jordan pairs. Using that inner ideals in classical Jordan pairs are always complemented (in the sense defined by O. Loos and E. Neher), the classification of homotopes is obtained by combining the classification of inner ideals with the one of isotopes of a given inner ideal.

Abstract:Monomorphism categories of the symmetric and alternating groups are studied via Cayley’s Em-bedding Theorem. It is shown that the parity is well defined in such categories. As an application, the parity in a finite group G is classified. It is proved that any element in a group of odd order is always even and such a group can be embedded into some alternating group instead of some symmetric group in the Cayley’s theorem. It is also proved that the parity in an abelian group of even order is always balanced and the parity in an nonabelian group is independent of its order.

Abstract:We provide a summary of research on disjoint zero-sum subsets in finite Abelian groups, which is a branch of additive group theory and combinatorial number theory. An orthomorphism of a group $\Gamma$ is defined as a bijection $\varphi$ $\Gamma$ such that the mapping $g \mapsto g^{-1}\varphi(g)$ is also bijective. In 1981, Friedlander, Gordon, and Tannenbaum conjectured that when $\Gamma$ is Abelian, for any $k \geq 2$ dividing $|\Gamma| -1$, there exists an orthomorphism of $\Gamma$ fixing the identity and permuting the remaining elements as products of disjoint $k$-cycles. Using the idea of disjoint-zero sum subset we provide a solution of this conjecture for $k=3$ and $|\Gamma|\cong 4\pmod{24}$. We also present some applications of zero-sum sets in graph labeling.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that, taking $X$ a Hausdorff topological space, the homotopy groups of the spaces $SP_{m}(X)$ and $F_{m}(X)$, both called symmetric products, are monomorphic. We also introduce a new algebraic tool in topology: the discontinuous homotopy groups.

Abstract:The theory of groups has a twofold symmetry, sending a group to its opposite. Groups invariant under the symmetry are abelian. The theory of quasigroups has a richer, sixfold symmetry, obtained by permuting the multiplication with its two divisions. The Sixfold Way identifies the various classes of quasigroups which are invariant under the respective subgroups of the symmetry group of the theory. Quantum quasigroups provide a self-dual framework to unify the study of quasigroups and Hopf algebras. The goal of this paper is to classify the symmetry classes of quantum quasigroups. Corresponding to the Sixfold Way for classical quasigroups, we are able to identify a Sevenfold Way for general classes exhibiting a symmetry, and initiate a study of a fuller symmetry which holds for linear quantum quasigroups.

Abstract:In this note, we outline the general development of a theory of symmetric homology of algebras, an analog of cyclic homology where the cyclic groups are replaced by symmetric groups. This theory is developed using the framework of crossed simplicial groups and the homological algebra of module-valued functors. The symmetric homology of group algebras is related to stable homotopy theory. Two spectral sequences for computing symmetric homology are constructed. The relation to cyclic homology is discussed and some conjectures and questions towards further work are discussed.

Local symmetries in partially ordered sets

Abstract:Partially ordered sets (posets) have a universal appearance as an abstract structure in many areas of mathematics. Though, even their explicit enumeration remains unknown in general, and only the counts of all partial orders on sets of up to 16 unlabelled elements have been calculated to date, see sequence A000112 in the OEIS. In this work, we study automorphisms of posets in order to formulate a classification by local symmetries. These symmetries give rise to a division operation on the set of all posets and lead us to the construction of symmetry classes that are easier to characterise and enumerate. Additionally to the enumeration of symmetry classes, I derive polynomial expressions that count certain subsets of posets with a large number of layers (a large height). As an application in physics, I investigate local symmetries (or rather their lack of) in causal sets, which are discrete spacetime models used as a candidate framework for quantum gravity.

Abstract:Building on work of Saxl, we classify the multiplicity-free permutation characters of all symmetric groups of degree 66 or more. A corollary is a complete list of the irreducible characters of symmetric groups (again of degree 66 or more) which may appear in a multiplicity-free permutation representation. The multiplicity-free characters in a related family of monomial characters are also classified. We end by investigating a consequence of these results for Specht filtrations of permutation modules defined over fields of prime characteristic. Remark: parallel work of Godsil and Meagher (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0612567" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0612567">arXiv:math/0612567</a>) gives an independent classification of the multiplicity-free permutation characters of symmetric groups of all degrees.

Abstract:Many mechanical systems have configuration spaces that admit symmetries. Mathematically, such symmetries are modelled by the action of a group on a topological space. Several variations of topological complexity have emerged that take symmetry into account in various ways, either by asking that the motion planners themselves admit compatible symmetries, or by exploiting the symmetry to motion plan between functionally equivalent configurations. We will survey the main definitions due to Colman-Grant, Lubawski-Marzantowicz, Błaszczyk-Kaluba and Dranishnikov, and some related notions. We conclude with a short list of open problems.

Abstract:These lecture notes for the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer school Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry deal with manifestly infinite-dimensional algebraic varieties with large symmetry groups. So large, in fact, that subvarieties stable under those symmetry groups are defined by finitely many orbits of equations---whence the title Noetherianity up to symmetry. It is not the purpose of these notes to give a systematic, exhaustive treatment of such varieties, but rather to discuss a few "personal favourites": exciting examples drawn from applications in algebraic statistics and multilinear algebra. My hope is that these notes will attract other mathematicians to this vibrant area at the crossroads of combinatorics, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, statistics, and other applications.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group acting linearly on a vector space $V$. We consider the linear symmetry groups $\operatorname{GL}(Gv)$ of orbits $Gv\subseteq V$, where the \emph{linear symmetry group} $\operatorname{GL}(S)$ of a subset $S\subseteq V$ is defined as the set of all linear maps of the linear span of $S$ which permute $S$. We assume that $V$ is the linear span of at least one orbit $Gv$. We define a set of \emph{generic points} in $V$, which is Zariski-open in $V$, and show that the groups $\operatorname{GL}(Gv)$ for $v$ generic are all isomorphic, and isomorphic to a subgroup of every symmetry group $\operatorname{GL}(Gw)$ such that $V$ is the linear span of $Gw$. If the underlying characteristic is zero, "isomorphic" can be replaced by "conjugate in $\operatorname{GL}(V)$". Moreover, in the characteristic zero case, we show how the character of $G$ on $V$ determines this generic symmetry group. We apply our theory to classify all affine symmetry groups of vertex-transitive polytopes, thereby answering a question of Babai (1977).
