Abstract:The paradigm of the inflationary universe provides a possible explanation for several observed cosmological properties. In order for such solutions to be successful, the universe must convert the energy stored in the inflaton potential into standard model particles through a process known as reheating. In this paper, we reconsider the reheating process for the case where the inflaton potential respects an approximate (but spontaneously broken) conformal symmetry during the reheating epoch. After reviewing the Effective Field Theory of Reheating, we present solutions for the nonlinear oscillations of the inflaton field, derive the corresponding Hill's equation for the coupled reheating field, and determine the stability diagram for parametric resonance. For this class of models -- the simplest realization being a scalar field with a quartic term -- the expansion of the universe drives the coupled field toward a more unstable part of parameter space, in contrast to the standard case. We also generalize this class of models to include quadratic breaking terms in the potential during the reheating epoch and address the process of stability in that universality class of models.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to effectively convert the energy of the inflaton field into standard model particles during the process of cosmic reheating when the inflaton field has an approximate (but spontaneously broken) conformal symmetry during the reheating period. Specifically, the paper explores a specific reheating scenario in which the inflaton field has the form of a quartic - term potential during the oscillation period. This form leads to nonlinear oscillations, which in turn affect the process of parametric resonance, which is one of the key mechanisms for achieving efficient reheating. ### Main problems and goals of the paper 1. **Explore specific reheating models**: - The paper studies the specific mechanism of the reheating process when the inflaton field has a quartic - term potential during the reheating period. This quartic - term potential leads to nonlinear oscillations, thus changing the form of the variables driving parametric resonance. 2. **Analyze the influence of nonlinear oscillations**: - By solving the nonlinear oscillation equation of the inflaton field, the corresponding Hill's equation is derived, and the stability diagram of parametric resonance is determined. These nonlinear oscillations cause the effective forcing parameter in Hill's equation to increase with the expansion of the universe, thereby increasing the instability of the system. 3. **Consider the influence of quadratic - breaking terms**: - The paper also generalizes this class of models, introduces quadratic - breaking terms in the potential, and studies the influence of these breaking terms on the stability of the system. This helps to more comprehensively understand the dynamic behavior during the reheating process. ### Mathematical description of specific problems 1. **Nonlinear oscillation equation of the inflaton field**: \[ \ddot{\phi} + \lambda \phi^3 = 0 \] This equation describes the nonlinear oscillation of the inflaton field under the quartic - term potential. By introducing the normalized field \(\phi_R\) and the time variable \(t_R\), it can be simplified to: \[ \ddot{\phi}_R + \phi_R^3 = 0 \] 2. **Derivation of Hill's equation**: - Consider the wave equation of the reheating field \(\chi\). Ignoring the expansion of the universe, it can be written as: \[ \ddot{\chi}_k + \left( k^2 + m_\chi^2 + 2\sigma \bar{\Phi} \phi_R(\omega t) \right) \chi_k = 0 \] - By transforming variables, it can be converted into the standard form of Hill's equation: \[ \frac{d^2 \chi_k}{d\tau^2} + \left( A_k + 2q \phi_R(2\tau) \right) \chi_k = 0 \] where \(\tau=\frac{\omega t}{2}\), \(A_k = \frac{4}{\omega^2}(k^2 + m_\chi^2)\), \(q=\frac{4\sigma \bar{\Phi}}{\omega^2}\). 3. **Consider the influence of cosmic expansion**: - When considering the expansion of the universe, the wave equation of the reheating field becomes: \[ \frac{d^2 \tilde{\chi}_k}{dt^2} + \left( \frac{k^2}{a^2} + m_\chi^2 + 2\sigma \bar{\Phi} \phi_R(\omega t)-H^2-\dot{H} \right) \tilde{\chi}_k = 0 \] - Since the \(H^2\) and \(\dot{H}\) terms are rapidly redshifted, their influence can be ignored, and finally: \[ \frac{d^2 \chi_k}{d\tau^2} + \frac{4}{\omega^2}\left( \frac{k^2}{
