Abstract:A method for deforming fractals from complex dynamics is proposed. Firstly, an elementary fractal transfiguration model of complex quadratic dynamics in the form of a six-parameter family is presented. Secondly, a two-dimensional extension factor, also including six control parameters, is constructed. Finally, a transfiguration algorithm is put forward, which begins with an iteration of the fractal transfiguration model for computation of the periodicities of all discrete points in the given complex plane and then exerts a 2D extension factor on every point to transfer them while keeping their periodicities unchanged. Experimental results demonstrate that our fractal deformation algorithm is simple, intuitive, foreseeable and easy to control. It is hoped that our investigation would result in new perspectives for the deformation of other deterministic fractals as well.

Abstract:The material structure of bodies undergoing growth is considered. In the geometric framework of a general differential manifold modeling the physical space and a fiber bundle modeling spacetime, body points may be defined for any extensive property for which a smooth flux field exists, even if the property is not conserved. Singular flux fields are considered using the notion of a de Rham current. Writing a generalized balance law using the boundary of the current corresponding to a singular flux field, surface growth is unified with volumetric growth.

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

On Biharmonic Fractals Displaying a Structural Transition

Abstract:Abstract A new class of fractal structures displaying a structural transition on growing is studied by considering the morphology selection mechanism under the biharmonic field V̄2(V̄2u) = 0 as recently proposed by the authors [Phys. Rev. E 47, 476 (1993)]. By relating the growth probability for each site to the local ("potential") field as (V̄2u)n , the effects of the surrounding medium and of geometrical constraints for the seed particles are numerically calculated and discussed. A theoretical estimation of the transition point is given anew by solving the biharmonic equation with the boundary conditions used in simulations.

Abstract:Inelastic surface growth associated with continuous creation of incompatibility on the boundary of an evolving body is behind a variety of natural and technological processes, including embryonic development and 3D printing. In this paper we extend the recently proposed stress-space-centered theory of surface growth (PRL 119, 048001, 2017) by shifting the focus towards growth induced strains. To illustrate the new development we present several analytically tractable examples.

Invariant Distributions of Partially Hyperbolic Systems: Fractal Graphs, Excessive Regularity, and Rigidity

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach linking fractal geometry to partially hyperbolic dynamics, revealing several new phenomena related to regularity jumps and rigidity. One key result demonstrates a sharp phase transition for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms $f \in \mathrm{Diff}^\infty_{\mathrm{vol}}(\mathbb{T}^3)$ with a contracting center direction: $f$ is $C^\infty$-rigid if and only if both $E^s$ and $E^c$ exhibit Hölder exponents exceeding the expected threshold. Specifically, we prove: If the Hölder exponent of $E^s$ exceeds the expected value, then $E^s$ is $C^{1+}$ and $E^u \oplus E^s$ is jointly integrable. If the Hölder exponent of $E^c$ exceeds the expected value, then $W^c$ forms a $C^{1+}$ foliation. If $E^s$ (or $E^c$) does not exhibit excessive Hölder regularity, it must have a fractal graph. These and related results originate from a general non-fractal invariance principle: for a skew product $F$ over a partially hyperbolic system $f$, if $F$ expands fibers more weakly than $f$ along $W^u_f$ in the base, then for any $F$-invariant section, if $\Phi$ has no a fractal graph, then it is smooth along $W^u_f$ and holonomy-invariant. Motivated by these findings, we propose a new conjecture on the stable fractal or stable smooth behavior of invariant distributions in typical partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:The multifractal behavior of solid-on-solid growth on a 2 dimensional substrate has been studied. The results show that the deposition process can be characterized by a multifractal approach and the widths Delta alpha and the heights alpha f of singularity spectra f(alpha) are related to the average film thickness h (proportional to the deposition time) as Delta alpha similar to h(gamma 1) and Delta f similar to h(gamma 2), where gamma(1) = -0.92 +/- 0.03 and gamma(2) = -0.87 +/- 0.03.

Abstract:Evolution of planar curves under a nonlocal geometric equation is investigated. It models the simultaneous contraction and growth of carbonate particles called ooids in geosciences. Using classical ODE results and a bijective mapping we demonstrate that the steady parameters associated with the physical environment determine a unique, time-invariant, compact shape among smooth, convex curves embedded in $R^2$. It is also revealed that any time-invariant solution possesses $D_2$ symmetry. The model predictions remarkably agree with ooid shapes observed in nature.

Abstract:We investigate dimension-theoretic properties of concentric topological spheres, which are fractal sets emerging both in pure and applied mathematics. We calculate the box dimension and Assouad spectrum of such collections, and use them to prove that fractal spheres cannot be shrunk into a point at a polynomial rate. We also apply these dimension estimates to quasiconformally classify certain spiral shells, a generalization of planar spirals in higher dimensions. This classification also provides a bi-Hölder map between shells, and constitutes an addition to a general programme of research proposed by J. Fraser.

Reexamining a Geometric Theory of Biological Growth

Abstract:A first principles approach to the theoretical description of the development of biological forms, from a fertilized egg to a functioning embryo, remains a central challenge to applied physics and theoretical biology. Rather than refer to principles of self-organization and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics to describe a developing embryo from its active cellular constituents, a purely geometric theory is constructed that references the properties of the ambient space that the embryo occupies. In 1975 the Fields laureate René Thom developed a system of techniques and local dynamical models that are capable of reconstructing the local dynamic of an embryo at each new growth event of the system. Each new growth event (the development of a limb, for example) is a topological change in the dynamic of the system that can be classified only according to the properties of space. The local models can be non-conservative flows with robust attractor behavior that serve as organizing centers for systems development. Hamiltonian flows can also be considered with novel, self-reproducing vague attractor behavior. The set of growth events become an unfolding space related to the differentiable manifold of states. The set of growth events, which Thom refers to as the catastrophe set, has special algebraic properties which permit these models to be low dimensional--the local model contains few parameters. We present Thom's work as a research program outlining a framework for the construction of these local models, and, ultimately, the synthesis of these models into a full theoretical description of a developing biological organism. We give examples of the application of selected models to key growth events in the process of gastrulation.

Abstract:We study the evolution equations for a regularized version of Dirac-harmonic maps from closed Riemannian surfaces. We establish the existence of a global weak solution for the regularized problem, which is smooth away from finitely many singularities. Moreover, we discuss the convergence of the evolution equations and address the question if we can remove the regularization in the end.

On equations of continuity and transport type on metric graphs and fractals

Abstract:We study first order equations of continuity and transport type on metric spaces of martingale dimension one, including finite metric graphs, p.c.f. self-similar sets and classical Sierpiński carpets. On such spaces solutions of the continuity equation in the weak sense are generally non-unique. We use semigroup theory to prove a well-posedness result for divergence free vector fields and under suitable loop and boundary conditions. It is the first well-posedness result for first order equations with scalar valued solutions on fractal spaces. A key tool is the concept of boundary quadruples recently introduced by Arendt, Chalendar and Eymard. To exploit it, we prove a new domain characterization for the relevant first order operator and a novel integration by parts formula, which takes into account the given vector field and the loop structure of the space. We provide additional results on duality and on metric graph approximations in the case of periodic boundary conditions.

Abstract:The free volume comprised between rough surfaces in contact governs the fluid/gas transport properties across networks of cracks and the leakage/percolation phenomena in seals. In this study, a fundamental insight into the evolution of the free volume depending on the mean plane separation, on the real contact area and on the applied pressure is gained in reference to fractal surfaces whose contact response is solved using the boundary element method. Particular attention is paid to the effect of the surface fractal dimension and of the surface resolution on the predicted results. The free volume domains corresponding to different threshold levels are found to display fractal spatial distributions whose bounds to their fractal dimensions are theoretically derived. A synthetic formula based on the probability distribution function of the free volumes is proposed to synthetically interpret the numerically observed trends.

In particular we study dendritations of surfaces that are defined as maximal atlases of compatible upper semicontinuous local decompositions into dendrites. Applications are given in modeling stable and unstable sets of topological dynamical systems. For this purpose new forms of expansivity are defined.

Abstract:We conformally weld (via "quantum zipping") two boundary arcs of a Liouville quantum gravity random surface to generate a random curve called the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE). We develop a theory of quantum fractal measures (consistent with the Knizhnik-Polyakov-Zamolochikov relation) and analyze their evolution under welding via SLE martingales. As an application, we construct the natural quantum length and boundary intersection measures on the SLE curve itself.

Abstract:Based on the kinematic viewpoint, the concept of proportional movement is abstracted to explain the strange behaviors of fractal snowflakes. A transformation group for proportional movement is defined. Under the proportional movement transformation groups, necessary and sufficient conditions for self-similarity of multilevel structures are presented. The characteristic topology of snowflake-like fractal patterns, identical to the topology of ternary-segment fractal line, is proved. Moreover, the topological evolution of N-segment line is explored. The concepts of limit growth and infinite growth are clarified, and the corresponding growth conditions are derived. The topological invariant properties of N-segment line are exposed. In addition, the proposition that the topological evolution of the N-segment line is mainly controlled by the topological invariant N is verified.

Abstract:A numerical study on a new bifurcation phenomenon in multi-void growth is carried out for a 2-D problem in nonlinear elasticity, where the reference configuration is y-axisymmetric with two pre-existing small voids. The numerical experiments show that, under large radially-symmetric displacement boundary conditions, other than the y-axisymmetric equilibrium solution one would normally expect, there are two energetically more favorable non-y-axisymmetric equilibrium solutions in which the growth of one void is overwhelmingly dominant. The relationships between the critical bifurcation boundary displacement and the compressibility of the material as well as some geometric parameters are illustrated by numerical results. The numerical experiments also show that the existence of the secondary bifurcation will effectively expedite the onset of fractures.

Abstract:Growth processes in many living organisms create thin, soft materials with an intrinsically hyperbolic geometry. These objects support novel types of mesoscopic defects - discontinuity lines for the second derivative and branch points - terminating defects for these line discontinuities. These higher-order defects move "easily", and thus confer a great degree of flexibility to thin hyperbolic elastic sheets. We develop a general, higher-order, continuum mechanical framework from which we can derive the dynamics of higher order defects in a thermodynamically consistent manner. We illustrate our framework by obtaining the explicit equations for the dynamics of branch points in an elastic body.
Fractal behavior for nodal lines of smooth planar Gaussian fields at criticality

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of the large scale geometry of the excursion set and nodal set of a planar smooth Gaussian field at criticality $\ell=\ell_c=0$. We prove that there exists $s_1>1$ such that with high probability, macroscopic nodal lines in a box of size $\lambda$ are of length at least $\lambda^{s_1}$. As an application, on the event that a box is crossed by a nodal line, then the shortest crossing is of length at least $\lambda^{s_1}$. We also prove that there exists $s_2<2$ such that with high probability, the shortest crossing is non degenerated, that is, its length is at most $\lambda^{s_2}$. The argument for the lower bound is based on a celebrated paper of Aizenman and Burchard [1] that provides a general argument to show that random curves present a fractal behavior. For the upper bound, our proof relies on the polynomial decay of the probability of one-arm events which was proven in [4].

Abstract:This paper deals with the cell elements, growth modes and topology evolutions of fractal super fibers. Three types of cell elements, i.e., circles, hexagons and equilateral triangles, are involved. The closed boundary (or the datum line) of the cell element is found to divide the growth district of the fractal pattern into two parts: the inside part and the outside one. Related to the datum lines, the growth modes and topology evolutions of the super fractal sets show diversities: from different cell elements, identical fractal patterns with identical geometric shapes and topologies may be generated through the same growth modes; while from the same cell elements, identical fractal patterns with identical geometric shapes and topologies may be created through different growth modes. As far as the growth modes are concerned, there are inside growth and outside one. As far as the topologies are concerned, there are connected topology and disconnected one. As far as the topology evolutions are concerned, there are anamorphosis, mutation and anamorphosis-mutation. Such results may not only enrich our knowledge about the growth and evolution phenomena in nonlinear dynamics, but also stimulate new ideas for designing novel fractal structures.
