Abstract:In this study, we investigate intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe a reentrant quantum anomalous Hall effect when the Fermi energy enters the valance band and magnetic field equals zero, indicating the emergence of the Chern Anderson insulator state. The discovery opens a new avenue for realizing the QAH effect and underscores the fundamental role of both Berry curvature and Anderson localization.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is a new mechanism for realizing the Quantum Anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in specific materials. Specifically, the researchers are concerned with the reentrant QAH effect observed in MnBi₂Te₄ thin films grown by molecular - beam epitaxy. This phenomenon occurs when the Fermi level enters the valence band and the magnetic field is zero, indicating that the system transforms into a state called Chern - Anderson insulator (CAI). This state is different from the traditional Chern insulator. The latter requires a global bandgap to achieve quantized Hall conductivity, while the CAI is formed under the combined action of exchange - induced Berry curvature splitting and Anderson localization caused by disorder without a global bandgap. The key finding of the paper is that in MnBi₂Te₄ thin films, when the Fermi level is tuned into the valence band, the system re - enters the QAH state, even under zero - magnetic - field conditions. This finding not only reveals the fundamental roles of Berry curvature and Anderson localization in the QAH effect, but also opens up new ways to realize the QAH effect, especially to explore Berry - curvature - related physical phenomena in multi - band systems without a global bandgap.
