Abstract:We study the equilibrium fluctuations of an interacting particle system evolving on the discrete ring with $N\in\mathbb N$ points, denoted by $\mathbb T_N$, and with three species of particles that we name $A,B$ and $C$, but such that at each site there is only one particle. We prove that proper choices of density fluctuation fields (that match those from nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics theory) associated to the (two) conserved quantities converge, in the limit $N\to\infty$, to a system of stochastic partial differential equations, that can either be the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation or the Stochastic Burgers equation. To understand the cross interaction between the two conserved quantities, we derive a general version of the Riemann-Lebesgue lemma which is of independent interest.

Abstract:We study a class of interacting particle systems in which $n$ signed particles move on the real line. At close range particles with the same sign repel and particles with opposite sign attract each other. The repulsion and attraction are described by the same singular interaction force $f$. Particles of opposite sign may collide in finite time. Upon collision, pairs of colliding particles are removed from the system. In a recent paper by Peletier, Požár and the author, one particular particle system of this type was studied; that in which $f(x) = \frac1x$ is the Coulomb force. Global well-posedness of this particle system was shown and a discrete-to-continuum limit (i.e. $n \to \infty$) to a nonlocal PDE for the signed particle density was established. Both results rely on innovative use of techniques in ODE theory and viscosity solutions. In the present paper we extend these results to a large class of particle systems in order to cover many new applications. Motivated by these applications, we consider the presence of an external force $g$, consider interaction forces $f$ with a large range of singularities and allow $f$ to scale with $n$. To handle this class of $f$ we develop several new proof techniques in addition to those used for the Coulomb force.

Abstract:We study a general class of interacting particle systems over a countable state space $V$ where on each site $x \in V$ the particle mass $\eta(x) \geq 0$ follows a stochastic differential equation. We construct the corresponding Markovian dynamics in terms of strong solutions to an infinite coupled system of stochastic differential equations and prove a comparison principle with respect to the initial configuration as well as the drift of the process. Using this comparison principle, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure in the subcritical regime and prove convergence of the transition probabilities in the Wasserstein-1-distance. Finally, for sublinear drifts, we establish a linear growth theorem showing that the spatial spread is at most linear in time. Our results cover a large class of finite and infinite branching particle systems with interactions among different sites.

Exact solution of an integrable non-equilibrium particle system

Abstract:We consider the integrable family of symmetric boundary-driven interacting particle systems that arise from the non-compact XXX Heisenberg model in one dimension with open boundaries. In contrast to the well-known symmetric exclusion process, the number of particles at each site is unbounded. We show that a finite chain of $N$ sites connected at its ends to two reservoirs can be solved exactly, i.e. the factorial moments of the non-equilibrium steady-state can be written in closed form for each $N$. The solution relies on probabilistic arguments and techniques inspired by integrable systems. It is obtained in two steps: i) the introduction of a dual absorbing process reducing the problem to a finite number of particles; ii) the solution of the dual dynamics exploiting a symmetry obtained from the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. Long-range correlations are computed in the finite-volume system. The exact solution allows to prove by a direct computation that, in the thermodynamic limit, the system approaches local equilibrium. A by-product of the solution is the algebraic construction of a direct mapping between the non-equilibrium steady state and the equilibrium reversible measure.

Long run convergence of discrete-time interacting particle systems of the McKean-Vlasov type

Abstract:We consider a discrete-time system of n coupled random vectors, a.k.a. interacting particles. The dynamics involve a vanishing step size, some random centered perturbations, and a mean vector field which induces the coupling between the particles. We study the doubly asymptotic regime where both the number of iterations and the number n of particles tend to infinity, without any constraint on the relative rates of convergence of these two parameters. We establish that the empirical measure of the interpolated trajectories of the particles converges in probability, in an ergodic sense, to the set of recurrent Mc-Kean-Vlasov distributions. A first application example is the granular media equation, where the particles are shown to converge to a critical point of the Helmholtz energy. A second example is the convergence of stochastic gradient descent to the global minimizer of the risk, in a wide two-layer neural networks using random features.

Abstract:We study the stationary fluctuations of independent run-and-tumble particles. We prove that the joint densities of particles with given internal state converges to an infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We also consider an interacting case, where the particles are subjected to exclusion. We then study the fluctuations of the total density, which is a non-Markovian Gaussian process, and obtain its covariance in closed form. By considering small noise limits of this non-Markovian Gaussian process, we obtain in a concrete example a large deviation rate function containing memory terms.

Quantitative relative entropy estimates for interacting particle systems with common noise

Abstract:We derive quantitative estimates proving the conditional propagation of chaos for large stochastic systems of interacting particles subject to both idiosyncratic and common noise. We obtain explicit bounds on the relative entropy between the conditional Liouville equation and the stochastic Fokker--Planck equation with an interaction kernel $k\in L^2(\R^d) \cap L^\infty(\R^d)$, extending far beyond the Lipschitz case. Our method relies on reducing the problem to the idiosyncratic setting, which allows us to utilize the exponential law of large numbers by Jabin and Wang~\cite{JabinWang2018} in a pathwise manner.

Abstract:We study two interacting particle systems, both modeled as a system of $N$ stochastic differential equations driven by Brownian motions with singular kernels and moderate interaction. We show a quantitative result where the convergence rate depends on the moderate scaling parameter, the regularity of the solution of the limit equation and the dimension. Our approach is based on the techniques of stochastic calculus, some properties of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin space, and the semigroup approach introduced in [9].

Abstract:Interacting particle systems studied in this paper are probabilistic cellular automata with nearest-neighbor interaction including the Domany-Kinzel model. A special case of the Domany-Kinzel model is directed percolation. We regard the interacting particle system as a Markov chain on a graph. Then we present a new quantization of the interacting particle system. After that, we introduce a zeta function of the quantized model and give its determinant expression. Moreover, we calculate the absolute zeta function of the quantized model for the Domany-Kinzel model.

Abstract:This paper develops a non-asymptotic approach to mean field approximations for systems of $n$ diffusive particles interacting pairwise. The interaction strengths are not identical, making the particle system non-exchangeable. The marginal law of any subset of particles is compared to a suitably chosen product measure, and we find sharp relative entropy estimates between the two. Building upon prior work of the first author in the exchangeable setting, we use a generalized form of the BBGKY hierarchy to derive a hierarchy of differential inequalities for the relative entropies. Our analysis of this complicated hierarchy exploits an unexpected but crucial connection with first-passage percolation, which lets us bound the marginal entropies in terms of expectations of functionals of this percolation process.

Abstract:Recent works have derived and proven the large-population mean-field limit for several classes of particle-based stochastic reaction-diffusion (PBSRD) models. These limits correspond to systems of partial integral-differential equations (PIDEs) that generalize standard mass-action reaction-diffusion PDE models. In this work we derive and prove the next order fluctuation corrections to such limits, which we show satisfy systems of stochastic PIDEs with Gaussian noise. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate how including the fluctuation corrections can enable the accurate estimation of higher order statistics of the underlying PBSRD model.

Abstract:We consider a general framework for multi-type interacting particle systems on graphs, where particles move one at a time by random walk steps, different types may have different speeds, and may interact, possibly randomly, when they meet. We study the equilibrium time of the process, by which we mean the number of steps taken until no further interactions can occur. Under a rather general framework, we obtain high probability upper and lower bounds on the equilibrium time that match up to a constant factor and are of order $n\log n$ if there are order $n$ vertices and particles. We also obtain similar results for the balanced two-type annihilation model of chemical reactions; here, the balanced case (equal density of types) does not fit into our general framework and makes the analysis considerably more difficult. Our models do not admit any exact solution as for integrable systems or the duality approach available for some other particle systems, so we develop a variety of combinatorial tools for comparing processes in the absence of monotonicity.

Abstract:We derive a quantitative version of the hydrodynamic limit for an interacting particle system inspired by integrate-and-fire neuron models. More precisely, we show that the $L^2$-speed of convergence of the empirical density of states in a generalized contact process defined over a $d$-dimensional torus of size $n$ is of the optimal order $\mathcal O(n^{d/2})$. In addition, we show that the typical fluctuations around the aforementioned hydrodynamic limit are Gaussian, and governed by a inhomogeneous stochastic linear equation.

Existence and Convergence of Interacting Particle Systems on Graphs

Abstract:We give a general existence and convergence result for interacting particle systems on locally finite graphs with possibly unbounded degrees or jump rates. We allow the local state space to be Polish, and the jumps at a site to affect the states of its neighbours. The two common assumptions on interacting particle systems are uniform bounds on degrees and jump rates. In this paper, we relax these assumptions and allow for vertices with high degrees or rapid jumps. We introduce new assumptions ensuring that such vertices are placed sufficiently apart from each other and hence the process does not explode. Our assumptions involve finitude of certain weighted connective constants on the $2$-step graph of the underlying graph and our proofs proceed by showing that these assumptions imply non-percolation of the Poisson graphical construction. For some random graph models, if the jump rates are bounded by powers of vertex degrees, we give readily verifiable sufficient conditions on the underlying graph itself, under which our assumptions hold almost surely. These conditions involve exponential growth of the average number of self-avoiding walks from each vertex and that of moments of the vertex degrees. Using these conditions, we show the existence of interacting particle systems with unbounded jump rates like sandpile models on random graphs which can lack uniform bounds on degrees almost surely, e.g., long-range percolations on quasi-transitive graphs, and geometric random graphs on Delone sets.

Abstract:For any weakly interacting particle system with bounded kernel, we give uniform-in-time estimates of the $L^2$ norm of correlation functions, provided that the diffusion coefficient is large enough. When the condition on the kernels is more restrictive, we can remove the dependence of the lower bound for diffusion coefficient on the initial data and estimate the size of chaos in a weaker sense. Based on these estimates, we may study fluctuation around the mean-field limit.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide relations among the following properties: (a) the tail triviality of a probability measure $\mu$ on the configuration space ${\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$; (b) the finiteness of the $L^2$-transportation-type distance $\bar{\mathsf d}_{\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$; (c) the irreducibility of $\mu$-symmetric Dirichlet forms on ${\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$. As an application, we obtain the ergodicity (i.e., the convergence to the equilibrium) of interacting infinite diffusions having logarithmic interaction arisen from determinantal/permanental point processes including $\mathrm{sine}_{2}$, $\mathrm{Airy}_{2}$, $\mathrm{Bessel}_{\alpha, 2}$ ($\alpha \ge 1$), and $\mathrm{Ginibre}$ point processes, in particular, the case of unlabelled Dyson Brownian motion is covered. For the proof, the number rigidity of point processes in the sense of Ghosh--Peres plays a key role.

Interplay between short-range and critical long-range fluctuations in the out-of-equilibrium behavior of the particle density at quantum transitions

Abstract:We address the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium behavior of the particle density in many-body systems undergoing quantum transitions driven by the chemical potential $\mu$. They originate from a nontrivial interplay between noncritical short-range and critical long-range quantum fluctuations. As a paradigmatic model we consider the one-dimensional fermionic Kitaev chain, for which very accurate numerical studies can be performed, up to $O(10^4)$ sites. The search for dynamic scaling behaviors of the particle density is complicated by the fact that its equilibrium (ground state) behavior is dominated by short-range fluctuations, giving rise to regular background terms and peculiar logarithmic terms from resonances between renormalization-group perturbations associated with the energy and identity operator families within the conformal field theory. To study these issues, we focus on two dynamic protocols, either instantaneous quenches or quasi-adiabatic changes of $\mu$ to the critical value $\mu_c$, unveiling out-of-equilibrium scaling behaviors of the particle density, which arise from the critical modes, within a dynamic finite-size scaling framework.

Abstract:We study a system of interacting diffusions that models chemotaxis of biological cells or microorganisms (referred to as particles) in a chemical field that is dynamically modified through the collective contributions from the particles. Such systems of reinforced diffusions have been widely studied and their hydrodynamic limits that are nonlinear non-local partial differential equations are usually referred to as Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) equations. Solutions of the classical PKS equation may blow up in finite time and much of the PDE literature has been focused on understanding this blow-up phenomenon. In this work we study a modified form of the PKS equation that is natural for applications and for which global existence and uniqueness of solutions are easily seen to hold. Our focus here is instead on the study of the long time behavior through certain interacting particle systems. Under the so-called “quasi-stationary hypothesis” on the chemical field, the limit PDE reduces to a parabolic-elliptic system that is closely related to granular media equations whose time asymptotic properties have been extensively studied probabilistically through certain Lyapunov functions [17, 4, 9]. The modified PKS equation studied in the current work is a parabolic-parabolic system for which analogous Lyapunov function constructions are not available. A key challenge in the analysis is that the associated interacting particle system is not a Markov process as the interaction term depends on the whole history of the empirical measure. We establish, under suitable conditions, uniform in time convergence of the empirical measure of particle states to the solution of the PDE. We also provide uniform in time exponential concentration bounds for rate of the above convergence under additional integrability conditions. Finally, we introduce an Euler discretization scheme for the simulation of the interacting particle system and give error bounds that show that the scheme converges uniformly in time and in the size of the particle system as the discretization parameter approaches zero.

Non-equilibrium phase transitions in active rank diffusions

Abstract:We consider N run and tumble particles in one dimension interacting via a linear 1D Coulomb potential, an active version of the rank diffusion problem. It was solved previously for N = 2 leading to a stationary bound state in the attractive case. Here the evolution of the density fields is obtained in the large N limit in terms of two coupled Burger's type equations. In the attractive case the exact stationary solution describes a non-trivial N-particle bound state, which exhibits transitions between a phase where the density is smooth with infinite support, a phase where the density has finite support and exhibits "shocks", i.e. clusters of particles, at the edges, and a fully clustered phase. In presence of an additional linear potential, the phase diagram, obtained for either sign of the interaction, is even richer, with additional partially expanding phases, with or without shocks. Finally, a general self-consistent method is introduced to treat more general interactions. The predictions are tested through extensive numerical simulations.
