Abstract:We derive quantitative estimates proving the conditional propagation of chaos for large stochastic systems of interacting particles subject to both idiosyncratic and common noise. We obtain explicit bounds on the relative entropy between the conditional Liouville equation and the stochastic Fokker--Planck equation with an interaction kernel $k\in L^2(\R^d) \cap L^\infty(\R^d)$, extending far beyond the Lipschitz case. Our method relies on reducing the problem to the idiosyncratic setting, which allows us to utilize the exponential law of large numbers by Jabin and Wang~\cite{JabinWang2018} in a pathwise manner.

Abstract:Quantitative estimates are derived, on the whole space, for the relative entropy between the joint law of random interacting particles and the tensorized law at the limiting systeme. The developed method combines the relative entropy method under the moderated interaction scaling introduced by Oeschläger, and the propagation of chaos in probability. The result includes the case that the interaction force does not need to be a potential field. Furthermore, if the interaction force is a potential field, with a convolutional structure, then the developed estimate also provides the modulated energy estimates. Moreover, we demonstrate propagation of chaos for large stochastic systems of interacting particles and discuss possible applications to various interacting particle systems, including the Coulomb interaction case.

Abstract:We derive the spatially homogeneous Landau equation for Maxwellian molecules from a natural stochastic interacting particle system. More precisely, we control the relative entropy between the joint law of the particle system and the tensorized law of the Landau equation. To obtain this, we establish as key tools the pointwise logarithmic gradient and Hessian estimates of the density function and also a new Law of Large Numbers result for the particle system. The logarithmic estimates are derived via the Bernstein method and the parabolic maximum principle, while the Law of Large Numbers result comes from crucial observations on the control of moments at the particle level.

Abstract:We consider MCMC algorithms for certain particle systems which include both attractive and repulsive forces, making their convergence analysis challenging. We prove that a version of these algorithms on a bounded state space is uniformly ergodic with explicit quantitative convergence rate. We also prove that a version on an unbounded state space is still geometrically ergodic, and then use the method of shift-coupling to obtain an explicit quantitative bound on its convergence rate.

Abstract:We study two interacting particle systems, both modeled as a system of $N$ stochastic differential equations driven by Brownian motions with singular kernels and moderate interaction. We show a quantitative result where the convergence rate depends on the moderate scaling parameter, the regularity of the solution of the limit equation and the dimension. Our approach is based on the techniques of stochastic calculus, some properties of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin space, and the semigroup approach introduced in [9].

Abstract:In this paper, we consider particle systems with interaction and Brownian motion. We prove that when the initial data is from the sampling of Chorin's method, i.e., the initial vertices are on lattice points $hi\in \mathbb{R}^d$ with mass $\rho_0(hi) h^d$, where $\rho_0$ is some initial density function, then the regularized empirical measure of the interacting particle system converges in probability to the corresponding mean-field partial differential equation with initial density $\rho_0$, under the Sobolev norm of $L^\infty(L^2)\cap L^2(H^1)$. Our result is true for all those systems when the interacting function is bounded, Lipschitz continuous and satisfies certain regular condition. And if we further regularize the interacting particle system, it also holds for some of the most important systems of which the interacting functions are not. For systems with repulsive Coulomb interaction, this convergence holds globally on any interval $[0,t]$. And for systems with attractive Newton force as interacting function, we have convergence within the largest existence time of the regular solution of the corresponding Keller-Segel equation.
Geometric relative entropies and barycentric Rényi divergences

Abstract:We give systematic ways of defining monotone quantum relative entropies and (multi-variate) quantum Rényi divergences starting from a set of monotone quantum relative entropies. Despite its central importance in information theory, only two additive and monotone quantum extensions of the classical relative entropy have been known so far, the Umegaki and the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropies. Here we give a general procedure to construct monotone and additive quantum relative entropies from a given one with the same properties; in particular, when starting from the Umegaki relative entropy, this gives a new one-parameter family of monotone and additive quantum relative entropies interpolating between the Umegaki and the Belavkin-Staszewski ones on full-rank states. In a different direction, we use a generalization of a classical variational formula to define multi-variate quantum Rényi quantities corresponding to any finite set of quantum relative entropies $(D^{q_x})_{x\in X}$ and signed probability measure $P$, as $$ Q_P^{\mathrm{b},\mathbf{q}}((\rho_x)_{x\in X}):=\sup_{\tau\ge 0}\left\{\text{Tr}\,\tau-\sum_xP(x)D^{q_x}(\tau\|\rho_x)\right\}. $$ We show that monotone quantum relative entropies define monotone Rényi quantities whenever $P$ is a probability measure. With the proper normalization, the negative logarithm of the above quantity gives a quantum extension of the classical Rényi $\alpha$-divergence in the 2-variable case ($X=\{0,1\}$, $P(0)=\alpha$). We show that if both $D^{q_0}$ and $D^{q_1}$ are monotone and additive quantum relative entropies, and at least one of them is strictly larger than the Umegaki relative entropy then the resulting barycentric Rényi divergences are strictly between the log-Euclidean and the maximal Rényi divergences, and hence they are different from any previously studied quantum Rényi divergence.

Typical entanglement entropy in systems with particle-number conservation

Abstract:We calculate the typical bipartite entanglement entropy $\langle S_A\rangle_N$ in systems containing indistinguishable particles of any kind as a function of the total particle number $N$, the volume $V$, and the subsystem fraction $f=V_A/V$, where $V_A$ is the volume of the subsystem. We expand our result as a power series $\langle S_A\rangle_N=a f V+b\sqrt{V}+c+o(1)$, and find that $c$ is universal (i.e., independent of the system type), while $a$ and $b$ can be obtained from a generating function characterizing the local Hilbert space dimension. We illustrate the generality of our findings by studying a wide range of different systems, e.g., bosons, fermions, spins, and mixtures thereof. We provide evidence that our analytical results describe the entanglement entropy of highly excited eigenstates of quantum-chaotic spin and boson systems, which is distinct from that of integrable counterparts.

Abstract:We derive a quantitative version of the hydrodynamic limit for an interacting particle system inspired by integrate-and-fire neuron models. More precisely, we show that the $L^2$-speed of convergence of the empirical density of states in a generalized contact process defined over a $d$-dimensional torus of size $n$ is of the optimal order $\mathcal O(n^{d/2})$. In addition, we show that the typical fluctuations around the aforementioned hydrodynamic limit are Gaussian, and governed by a inhomogeneous stochastic linear equation.

Abstract:This paper develops a non-asymptotic approach to mean field approximations for systems of $n$ diffusive particles interacting pairwise. The interaction strengths are not identical, making the particle system non-exchangeable. The marginal law of any subset of particles is compared to a suitably chosen product measure, and we find sharp relative entropy estimates between the two. Building upon prior work of the first author in the exchangeable setting, we use a generalized form of the BBGKY hierarchy to derive a hierarchy of differential inequalities for the relative entropies. Our analysis of this complicated hierarchy exploits an unexpected but crucial connection with first-passage percolation, which lets us bound the marginal entropies in terms of expectations of functionals of this percolation process.

Abstract:Many Gibbs measures with mean field interactions are known to be chaotic, in the sense that any collection of $k$ particles in the $n$-particle system are asymptotically independent, as $n\to\infty$ with $k$ fixed or perhaps $k=o(n)$. This paper quantifies this notion for a class of continuous Gibbs measures on Euclidean space with pairwise interactions, with main examples being systems governed by convex interactions and uniformly convex confinement potentials. The distance between the marginal law of $k$ particles and its limiting product measure is shown to be $O((k/n)^{c \wedge 2})$, with $c$ proportional to the squared temperature. In the high temperature case, this improves upon prior results based on subadditivity of entropy, which yield $O(k/n)$ at best. The bound $O((k/n)^2)$ cannot be improved, as a Gaussian example demonstrates. The results are non-asymptotic, and distance is quantified via relative Fisher information, relative entropy, or the squared quadratic Wasserstein metric. The method relies on an a priori functional inequality for the limiting measure, used to derive an estimate for the $k$-particle distance in terms of the $(k+1)$-particle distance.

Conserved quantities for Generalized Gibbs Ensemble from Entanglement

Abstract:Relaxed quantum systems with conservation laws are believed to be approximated by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE), which incorporates the constraints of certain conserved quantities serving as integrals of motion. By drawing analogy between reduced density matrix and GGE, we demonstrate for free fermions a generic entanglement Hamiltonian superdensity matrix (EHSM) framework for determining the set of conserved quantities in GGE. The framework proposes that such conserved quantities are linear superposition of eigenstate entanglement Hamiltonians of a larger auxiliary system, where the eigenstates are Fock states occupying the common eigenmodes. For 1D homogeneous free fermions with periodic boundary condition, which maps to 1D hardcore bosons, these conserved quantities lead to an non-Abelian GGE, which predicts the relaxation of both fermion and boson bilinears more accurately than the conventional Abelian GGE. Generalization of the framework to interacting models may provide novel numerical insights for quantum integrability.

Abstract:Entanglement entropy under a particle bipartition provides complementary information to mode entanglement as it is sensitive to interactions and particle statistics at leading order and does not depend on any externally imposed length scale. In this paper, we investigate the particle entanglement entropy in a system of $N$ interacting spinless lattice fermions in one spatial dimension by combining bosonization techniques with exact and approximate numerical methods. We introduce a general scaling form for the fermionic particle entanglement entropy captured by a shape function that enters as a extensive interaction induced correction to a known free fermion result. A general asymptotic expansion in the total number of particles demonstrates that its form is robust for different values of the Rényi index and highlights how quantum correlations are encoded in the $n$-particle density matrix of a pure many-body quantum state.

Abstract:The relative entropy of entanglement $E_R$ is defined as the distance of a multi-partite quantum state from the set of separable states as measured by the quantum relative entropy. We show that this optimisation is always achieved, i.e. any state admits a closest separable state, even in infinite dimensions; also, $E_R$ is everywhere lower semi-continuous. We use this to derive a dual variational expression for $E_R$ in terms of an external supremum instead of infimum. These results, which seem to have gone unnoticed so far, hold not only for the relative entropy of entanglement and its multi-partite generalisations, but also for many other similar resource quantifiers, such as the relative entropy of non-Gaussianity, of non-classicality, of Wigner negativity $\unicode{8212}$ more generally, all relative entropy distances from the sets of states with non-negative $\lambda$-quasi-probability distribution. The crucial hypothesis underpinning all these applications is the weak*-closedness of the cone generated by free states, and for this reason the techniques we develop involve a bouquet of classical results from functional analysis. We complement our analysis by giving explicit and asymptotically tight continuity estimates for $E_R$ and closely related quantities in the presence of an energy constraint.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate an interacting particle system featuring random intensities, individual noise, and environmental noise, commonly referred to as stochastic point vortex model. The model serves as an approximation for the stochastic 2-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation. We establish a quantitative mean-field convergence for the stochastic 2-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in the form of relative entropy. To address challenges posed by environmental noise, random intensities, and singular kernel, we compare relative entropy for conditional distributions, employing technology of disintegration and the relative entropy method developed by Jabin and Wang in [JW18].

Generalizing Gibbsian Statistical Ensemble Theory for Strongly Coupled Heterogeneous Systems

Abstract:We use the theory of probability to show that, as the fraction $X_n/Y\to 0$, the conditional probability for $X_n$, given $X_n+Y \in h_{\delta}:=[h, h+\delta]$, has a limit law $f_{X_n}(x)e^{-\psi_n(h_\delta)x}$, where $\psi_n(h_\delta) $ equals to $[\partial \ln P(Y \in y_\delta)/\partial y]_{y=h}$ plus an additional term, contributed from the strong correlation between $X_n$ and bath $Y$. Since $\delta$ is infinitesimal, the theory shows a logic equivalence between the conditional probability setup and traditional energy conservation in dynamics. We obtain the state space density for a system strongly coupled to a heat bath. A discrete version of the theorem yields the grand canonical distribution without the Gibbs paradox. In terms of certain invariant criteria with respect to $h_\delta$, the concept of a thermodynamic reservoir is given.
Rényi relative entropy based monogamy of entanglement in tripartite systems

Abstract:A comprehensive investigation of the entanglement characteristics is carried out on tripartite spin-1/2 systems, examining prototypical tripartite states, the thermal Heisenberg model, and the transverse field Ising model. The entanglement is computed using the Rényi relative entropy. In the traditional Rényi relative entropy, the generalization parameter $\alpha$ can take values only in the range $0 \leq \alpha \leq 2$ due to the requirements of joint convexity of the measure. To use the Rényi relative entropy over a wider range of $\alpha$, we use the sandwiched form which is jointly convex in the regime $0.5 \leq \alpha \leq \infty$. In prototypical tripartite states, we find that GHZ states are monogamous, but surprisingly so are W states. On the other hand, star states exhibit polygamy, due to the higher level of purity of the bipartite subsystems. For spin models, we study the dependence of entanglement on various parameters such as temperature, spin-spin interaction, and anisotropy, and identify regions where entanglement is the largest. The Rényi parameter $\alpha$ scales the amount of entanglement in the system. The entanglement measure based on the traditional and the sandwiched Rényi relative entropies obey the Araki-Lieb-Thirring inequality. In the Heisenberg models, namely the XYZ, XXZ, and XY models, the system is always monogamous. However, in the transverse field Ising model, the state is initially polygamous and becomes monogamous with temperature and coupling.

Abstract: There is no doubt that the information hidden in quantum entanglement can be used to infer the organizing principle of various quantum phases of matter, ranging from spontaneous symmetry breaking phases, quantum critical points to topologically ordered states. It is far from clear, however, whether entanglement measures, such as the entanglement entropy (EE), can actually be obtained with the precision required to observe these subtle features -- usually in the form of universal finite size scaling behavior -- in highly entangled quantum matter. In the case of 2D interacting fermionic lattice models with gapless spectra, such as in the Hubbard model, the computation of the EE has faced severe limitations, making reliable data in the universal scaling regime off limits to all existing numerical algorithms. Here we explain the reason for the previously unsuccessful attempts in EE computations in quantum Monte Carlo simulations and more importantly, show how to overcome the conceptual and computational barrier with the incremental algorithm[1,2], such that the computation of the EE in 2D interacting fermion systems finally becomes easy and reliable.
Relative entropy technique in terms of position and momentum and its application to Euler-Poisson system

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic study of the relative entropy technique for compressible motions of continuum bodies described as Hamiltonian flows. While the description for the classical mechanics of $N$ particles involves a Hamiltonian in terms of position and momentum vectors, that for the continuum fluid involves a Hamiltonian in terms of density and momentum. For space dimension $d\ge 2$, the Hamiltonian functional has a non-convex dependency on the deformation gradient or placement map due to material frame indifference. Because of this, the applicability of the relative entropy technique with respect to the deformation gradient or the placement map is inherently limited. Despite these limitations, we delineate the feasible applications and limitations of the technique by pushing it to its available extent. Specifically, we derive the relative Hamiltonian identity, where the Hamiltonian takes the position and momentum field as its primary and conjugate state variables, all within the context of the referential coordinate system that describes the motion.
