Abstract:The present paper introduces a hybrid explicit-implicit topology optimization method for shell-infill composite structure design. The proposed approach effectively combines the advantages of the explicit Moving Morphable Component (MMC) method, which describes structural topology only using a set of geometric parameters, and the implicit Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method, which offers greater design freedom for characterizing the structural features. Compared to the existing methods for shell-infill structure design, the proposed approach can obtain optimized shell-infill structures with complex infill topology without resorting to complex filtering/projection operations. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Optimization and Control
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to design shell - filling composite structures with complex internal filling topologies while avoiding the use of complex filtering / projection operations. Specifically, the paper proposes a hybrid explicit - implicit topological optimization method that combines the Moving Morphable Component (MMC) method and the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method. This method aims to fully utilize the advantages of the explicit method in describing the geometric features of the structure boundaries and the flexibility of the implicit method in characterizing the structural details, thereby achieving the effective design of shell - filling composite structures. The traditional methods mentioned in the paper face the problems of high computational cost and difficulty in ensuring smooth connections between different elements when dealing with non - uniform filling structures. The proposed hybrid method, by combining the advantages of MMC and SIMP, can generate optimized structures with complex filling topologies without incurring excessive computational burdens, and can naturally generate shell structures with clear geometric boundaries, thus solving the challenges existing in traditional methods. In short, the main objective of the paper is to develop an efficient design method for generating shell - filling composite structures with complex internal filling structures while maintaining computational efficiency and optimal structural performance.
