Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$ and $\mathfrak g$ its Lie algebra. We study the monodromy map from the space of $\mathfrak g$-differential systems on a compact connected Riemann surface $\Sigma$ of genus $g \,\geq\, 2$ to the character variety of $G$-representations of the fundamental group of $\Sigma$. If the complex dimension of $G$ is at least three, we show that the monodromy map is an immersion at the generic point.

Abstract:Let $\varphi : Y \rightarrow X$ be a finite surjective morphism between smooth complex projective curves, where $X$ is irreducible but $Y$ need not be so. Let $V_*$ be a parabolic vector bundle on $Y$. We construct a parabolic structure on the direct image $\varphi_* V$ on $X$, where $V$ is the vector bundle underlying $V_*$. The parabolic vector bundle $\varphi_* V_*$ on $X$ obtained this way has a ramified torus sub-bundle; it is a torus bundle of $\text{Ad}(\varphi_* V)$ outside the parabolic divisor for $\varphi_* V_*$ that satisfies certain conditions at the parabolic points. Conversely, given a parabolic vector bundle $E_*$ on $X$, and a ramified torus sub-bundle $\mathcal T$ for it, we construct a ramified covering $Z$ of $X$ and a parabolic vector bundle $W_*$ on $Z$, such that the parabolic bundle $E_*$ is the direct image of $W_*$. A connection on $V_*$ produces a connection on $\varphi_* V_*$. The ramified torus sub-bundle for $\varphi_* V_*$ is preserved by the logarithmic connection on $\text{End}(\varphi_* V)$ induced by this connection on $\varphi_* V_*$. If the parabolic vector bundle $E_*$ on $X$ is equipped with a connection $D$ such that the connection on the endomorphism bundle induced by it preserves the ramified torus sub-bundle $\mathcal T$, then we prove that the corresponding parabolic vector bundle $W_*$ on $Z$ has a connection that produces the connection $D$ on the direct image $E_*$.

Abstract:For each nonnegative integer $g$, we classify the ramification types and monodromy groups of indecomposable coverings of complex curves $f: X\to Y$ where $X$ has genus $g$, under the hypothesis that $n:=°(f)$ is sufficiently large and the monodromy group is not $A_n$ or $S_n$. This proves a conjecture of Guralnick and several conjectures of Guralnick and Shareshian.

Characterization of genuine ramification using formal orbifolds

Abstract:We give a characterization of genuinely ramified maps of formal orbifolds in the Tannakian framework. In particular we show that a morphism is genuinely ramified if and only if the pullback of every stable bundle remains stable in the orbifold category. We also give some other characterizations of genuine ramification. This generalizes the results of [BKP1] and [BP1]. In fact, it is a positive characteristic analogue of results in [BKP2].

Abstract:Suppose that the adjusted Brill-Noether number is zero, we prove that there exists a family of twice-marked smooth projective curves such that the family of linear series with two imposed ramification conditions is irreducible. Moreover, under certain conditions, we show that the monodromy group contains the alternating group. In the case $r=1$, the monodromy group is the full symmetric group.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a rationally connected smooth projective variety of dimension $n$. We show that $X$ is a toric variety if and only if $X$ admits an int-amplified endomorphism with totally invariant ramification divisor. We also show that $X\cong (\mathbb{P}^1)^{\times n}$ if and only if $X$ admits a surjective endomorphism $f$ such that the eigenvalues of $f^*|_{\text{N}^1(X)}$ (without counting multiplicities) are $n$ distinct real numbers greater than $1$.

Relative monodromy of ramified sections on abelian schemes

Abstract:Let's fix a complex abelian scheme $\mathcal A\to S$ of relative dimension $g$, without fixed part, and having maximal variation in moduli. We show that the relative monodromy group $M^{\textrm{rel}}_\sigma$ of a ramified section $\sigma\colon S\to\mathcal A$ is nontrivial. Moreover, under some hypotheses on the action of the monodromy group $\textrm{Mon}(\mathcal A)$ we show that $M^{\textrm{rel}}_\sigma\cong \mathbb Z^{2g}$. We discuss several examples and applications. For instance we provide a new proof of Manin's kernel theorem and of the algebraic independence of the coordinates of abelian logarithms with respect to the coordinates of periods.

Abstract:We prove that projective hyperkähler manifolds of K3$^{[n]}$-type admitting a non-trivial symplectic birational self-map of finite order are isomorphic to moduli spaces of stable (twisted) coherent sheaves on K3 surfaces. Motivated by this result, we analyze the reflections on the movable cone of moduli spaces of sheaves and determine when they come from a birational involution.

Abstract:We construct examples to show that having nef cotangent bundle is not preserved under finite ramified covers. Our examples also show that a projective manifold with Stein universal cover may not have nef cotangent bundle, disproving a conjecture of Liu-Maxim-Wang.

Abstract:We compute the topological monodromy of every family of complete intersection curves. Like in the case of plane curves previously treated by the second-named author, we find the answer is given by the $r$-spin mapping class group associated to the maximal root of the adjoint line bundle. Our main innovation is a suite of tools for studying the monodromy of sections of a tensor product of very ample line bundles in terms of the monodromy of sections of the factors, allowing for an induction on (multi-)degree.

Abstract:We determine the image of the monodromy map for meromorphic projective structures with poles of orders greater than two. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gallo-Kapovich-Marden, and answers a question of Allegretti and Bridgeland. Our proof uses coordinates on the moduli space of framed representations arising from the work of Fock and Goncharov.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture for projective varieties which have finite morphisms to abelian varieties of trivial traces over function fields of characteristic 0. The proof is based on the idea of constructing entire curves in the pre-sequel "Partial heights, entire curves, and the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture." A new ingredient is an explicit description of the entire curves in terms of Lie algebras of abelian varieties.

Explicit constructions of connections on the projective line with a maximally ramified irregular singularity

Abstract:The Deligne--Simpson problem is an existence problem for connections with specified local behavior. Almost all previous work on this problem has restricted attention to connections with regular or unramified singularities. Recently, the authors, together with Kulkarni and Matherne, formulated a version of the Deligne--Simpson problem where certain ramified singular points are allowed and solved it for the case of Coxeter connections, i.e., connections on the Riemann sphere with a maximally ramified singularity at zero and (possibly) an additional regular singular point at infinity. A certain matrix completion problem, which we call the Upper Nilpotent Completion Problem, plays a key role in our solution. This problem was solved by Krupnik and Leibman, but their work does not provide a practical way of constructing explicit matrix completions. Accordingly, our previous work does not give explicit Coxeter connections with specified singularities. In this paper, we provide a numerically stable and highly efficient algorithm for producing upper nilpotent completions of certain matrices that arise in the theory of Coxeter connections. Moreover, we show how the matrices generated by this algorithm can be used to provide explicit constructions of Coxeter connections with arbitrary unipotent monodromy in each case that such a connection exists.

Some interesting birational morphisms of smooth affine quadric $3$-folds

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Collisionless energy absorption in 1D nanoplasma layer is considered. Straightforward classical calculation of the absorption rate in action-angle variables is presented. In regular regime the result obtained is the same as in [Zaretsky <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>., 2004], but deeper insight is possible now due to the technique used. Chirikov criterion of the chaotic absorption regime is written out. Collisionless energy absorption rate in nanoplasma layer is calculated in stochastic regime.

Abstract:Let $f:X\to X$ be a non-isomorphic (i.e., $\text{deg } f>1$) surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold $X$. We prove that any birational minimal model program becomes $f$-equivariant after iteration, provided that $f$ is $\delta$-primitive. Here $\delta$-primitive means that there is no $f$-equivariant (after iteration) dominant rational map $\pi:X\dashrightarrow Y$ to a positive lower-dimensional projective variety $Y$ such that the first dynamical degree remains unchanged. This way, we further determine the building blocks of $f$. As the first application, we prove the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for every non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism of a smooth projective threefold. As the second application, we reduce the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for $f$ to a terminal threefold with only $f$-equivariant Fano contractions.

Projective smoothing of varieties with simple normal crossings

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a new approach to show the existence and smoothing of simple normal crossing varieties in a given projective space. Our approach relates the above to the existence of nowhere reduced schemes called ribbons and their smoothings via deformation theory of morphisms. As a consequence, we prove results on the existence and smoothing of snc subvarieties $V \subset \mathbb{P}^N$, with two irreducible components, each of which are Fano varieties of dimension $n>2$, embedded inside $\mathbb{P}^{N}$ for effective values of $N$, by the complete linear series of a line bundle $H$. The general fibers of the resulting one parameter families are either smooth Fano, Calabi-Yau or varieties of general type, depending on the positivity of the canonical divisor of their intersections. An interesting consequence of projective smoothing is that it automatically gives a smoothing of the semi-log-canonical (slc) pair $(V, \Delta)$, where $\Delta = cH$, $c < 1$, is a rational multiple of a general hyperplane section of $H$. For threefolds, we are able to give explicit descriptions of the smoothable snc subvarieties due to the classification results of Iskovskikh-Mori-Mukai. In particular, we show the existence of unions V = $Y_1 \bigcup_D Y_2 \subset \mathbb{P}^N$, where $Y_i$'s are smooth anticanonically (resp. bi-anticanonically) embedded Fano threefolds, intersecting along $D$, where $D$ is either a del-Pezzo surface or a $K3$ surface (resp. a smooth surface with ample canonical bundle) and their smoothing in $\mathbb{P}^N$ to smooth Fano or Calabi-Yau threefolds (resp. to threefolds with ample canonical bundle) for various values of $N$ between $10$ and $163$. In cases when the general fiber is a smooth Fano or Calabi-Yau threefold, one can choose $c$ such that $(V, \Delta)$ is a Calabi-Yau pair while in all cases $c$ can be chosen so that $(V, \Delta)$ is a stable pair.

Non-free curves on Fano varieties

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth Fano variety over $\mathbb{C}$ and let $B$ be a smooth projective curve over $\mathbb{C}$. Geometric Manin's Conjecture predicts the structure of the irreducible components $M \subset \mathrm{Mor}(B, X)$ parametrizing curves which are non-free and have large anticanonical degree. Following ideas of our previous work, we prove the first prediction of Geometric Manin's Conjecture describing such irreducible components. As an application, we prove that there is a proper closed subset $V \subset X$ such that all non-dominant components of $\mathrm{Mor}(B, X)$ parametrize curves in $V$, verifying an expectation put forward by Victor Batyrev. We also demonstrate two important ways that studying $\mathrm{Mor}(B,X)$ differs from studying the space of sections of a Fano fibration $\mathcal{X} \to B$.
