Abstract:Belle II is a Super $B$ Factory experiment, expected to record 50 ab$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at the SuperKEKB accelerator until 2035. The large samples of $B$ mesons, charm hadrons, and tau leptons produced in the clean experimental environment of $e^+e^-$ collisions will provide the basis of a broad and unique flavor-physics program. Belle II will pursue physics beyond the Standard Model in many ways, for example: improving the precision of weak interaction parameters, particularly Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and phases, and thus more rigorously test the CKM paradigm, measuring lepton-flavor-violating parameters, and performing unique searches for missing-mass dark matter events. Many key measurements will be made with world-leading precision.

Abstract:The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric electron-positron collider is a substantial upgrade of the B factory facility at the Japanese KEK laboratory. Belle II collected a sample of $362~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance between 2019 and 2022, with a maximum peak luminosity of $4.7 \times 10^{34} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}s^{-1}$. Belle II is currently facing a long shutdown period, required for several upgrades of the detector and the collider. Data taking will resume at the end of 2023. We report the recent measurements which involve neutral current transitions in $B$ meson decays. In particular, we present the current status and future prospects for the branching fractions measurements of the radiative decays $B\to K^*\gamma$ and the fully inclusive $B\to X_s\gamma$, the search for $B^+\to K^+\nu\bar \nu$ decays, the measurement of the branching fractions of $B\to J/\psi(\to \ell\ell)K$ and $B\to K^*\ell\ell$. Finally, we show the perspectives of the search for $B\to K^{*}\tau\tau$ and the searches of lepton flavor violating channels $B\to K^{(*)}\ell\ell'$, with $\ell=e, \mu, \tau$.

Electroweak penguins and radiative B decays at Belle II

Abstract:Decays of $B$ mesons involving the transition of a $b$ quark into an $s$ quark are good probes of physics beyond the standard model. Such decays are studied at the Belle II experiment, a detector located along the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider, and with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the energy of the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. The radiative decay of a $B$ meson into inclusive final states involving a strange hadron and a photon ($B \to X_s\gamma$) is studied by fully reconstructing the partner $B$ meson in a hadronic decay. The photon-energy spectrum and the branching fraction of the inclusive $B \to X_s\gamma$ decay are reported. In addition, the branching fraction of the decay of a $B$ meson into an excited $K$ meson and a pair of charged leptons ($B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$, with $\ell^+\ell^-$ either an electron-positron or a muon-antimuon pair) is reported. A control channel for the study of the charmless $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$ decay is the decay $B \to J/\psi (\ell^+\ell^-) K$, for which a lepton-flavour universality ratio is reported. All the reported measurements are in agreement with the world averages and the standard model predictions.

Abstract:The Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB accelerator complex is covering a wide range of exciting physics topics. To achieve the project's research goals, a substantial increase of the data sample to 50~ab$^{-1}$ is needed, and for that, the luminosity has to reach the ambitious goal of $6 \times 10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The progress towards the design luminosity is accompanied by research and development of the accelerator, detector components, operation methods, as well as their upgrades. In the present contribution, we will discuss the status and plans of the project, timescales for upgrades, their motivations, and opportunities, an overview of upgrade options, and finish with an outlook and perspectives.

Abstract:The Belle II collaboration operates a substantially upgraded Belle detector at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric e+ e- collider. Belle II will start recording collisions at the Upsilon(4S) energy in 2018, aiming to collect by 2025 50 ab^{-1} of data, 50 times more than the Belle experiment. We report prospects for measuring quantities associated with charge-parity violation, with special emphasis on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle phi_3 (gamma) and observables in semileptonic B meson decays associated with the quark-mixing matrix element Vub.

Semileptonic and Leptonic $B$ Physics at Belle II

Abstract:Semileptonic decays of $B$ mesons that proceed via $b\rightarrow u$ and $b\rightarrow c$ transitions, as well as rare leptonic $B$ decays, are fertile grounds for probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. The Belle II experiment presents as an excellent opportunity to study such decays, and since beginning operation in 2019, Belle II has already recorded half of the data collected by its predecessor and reached an instantaneous luminosity greater than $4\times 10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. Belle II expects to explore flavour physics with $B$ and charmed mesons with unprecedented precision, and has already produced multiple world-leading results in this area. We present recent results from Belle II on measurements of the CKM parameters $V_{ub}$ and $V_{cb}$ as well as results for $R(X_{e/\mu})$.

Abstract:We describe the planned near-term and potential longer-term upgrades of the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider operating at the KEK laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan. These upgrades will allow increasingly sensitive searches for possible new physics beyond the Standard Model in flavor, tau, electroweak and dark sector physics that are both complementary to and competitive with the LHC and other experiments.

Deciphering the Belle II Data on B→ Kνν Decay in the (dark) SMEFT with Minimal Flavour Violation

Abstract:Recently, the Belle II collaboration announced the first measurement of the branching ratio ℬ(B^+→K^+νν) , which is found to be about 2.7σ higher than the Standard Model (SM) prediction. We decipher the data with two new physics scenarios: the underlying quark-level b→ sνν transition is, besides the SM contribution, further affected by heavy new mediators that are much heavier than the electroweak scale, or amended by an additional decay channel with undetected light final states like dark matter or axion-like particles. These two scenarios can be most conveniently analyzed in the SM effective field theory (SMEFT) and the dark SMEFT (DSMEFT) framework, respectively. We consider the flavour structures of the resulting effective operators to be either generic or satisfy the minimal flavour violation (MFV) hypothesis, both for the quark and lepton sectors. In the first scenario, once the MFV assumption is made, only one SM-like low-energy effective operator induced by the SMEFT dimension-six operators can account for the Belle II excess, whose parameter space is, however, excluded by the Belle upper bound of the branching ratio ℬ(B^0→K^∗ 0νν) . In the second scenario, it is found that the Belle II excess can be accommodated by 22 of the DSMEFT operators involving one or two scalar, fermionic, or vector dark matters as well as axion-like particles. These operators also receive dominant constraints from the B0 → K*0 + inv and Bs → inv decays. Once the MFV hypothesis is assumed, the number of viable operators is reduced to 14, and the B+ → π+ + inv and K+ → π+ + inv decays start to put further constraints on them. Within the parameter space allowed by all the current experimental data, the q2 distributions of the B → K(*) + inv decays are then studied for each viable operator. We find that the resulting prediction of the operator 𝒬_qχ=(q_pγ_μq_r)(χγ^μχ) with a fermionic dark matter mass mχ ≈ 700 MeV can closely match the Belle II event distribution in the bins 2 ≤ q2 ≤ 7 GeV2. In addition, we, for the first time, calculate systematically the longitudinal polarization fraction FL of K* in the B → K* + inv decays within the DLEFT. By combining the decay spectra and FL, almost all the DSMEFT operators are found to be distinguishable from each other. Finally, the future prospects at Belle II, CEPC and FCC-ee are also discussed for some of these FCNC processes.

Abstract:The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected approximately 800 million Upsilon(4S) events in its decade of operation. The KEKB group has proposed Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35/cm^2/s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed, with a broader participation of European institutes. Super-KEKB and Belle-II were officially placed on the KEK 5-year Roadmap in early 2008. The paper presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector. More details are given on the DEPFET pixel detector that will be completely built in Europe.

Status and Prospects of Exotic Hadrons at Belle II

Abstract:In the past twenty years, many new hadrons that are difficult to be explained within the conventional quark model have been discovered in the quarkonium region, which are called exotic hadrons. Belle II experiment, as the next-generation $B$ factory, provides a good platform to explore them. The charmonium-like states can be produced at Belle II in several ways, such as $B$ meson decays, initial-state radiation processes, two-photon collisions, and double charmonium productions. The bottomonium-like states can be produced directly in $e^+e^-$ colliding energies at Belle II with low continuum backgrounds. Belle II plans to perform a high-statistics energy scan from the $B\bar B$ threshold up to the highest possible energy of 11.24 GeV to search for new $Y_b$ states with $J^{PC}$ = $1^{--}$, $X_b$ (the bottom counterpart of $\chi_{c1}(3872)$ (also known as $X(3872)$)), and partners of $Z_b$ states. In this paper, we give a mini-review on the status and prospects of exotic hadrons at Belle II.

Abstract:Belle II collects data at the asymmetric electron-positron collider SuperKEKB, which operates with a centre-of-mass energy at, or close to, the mass of the resonance. The lies just above the kinematic threshold for B -meson-pair production, so Belle II collects a large sample of and pairs that are unaccompanied by other particles. The low-multiplicity final state and constrained kinematics allow many measurements with missing energy and neutral mesons in the final state that complement the B -physics measurements made by LHCb. In addition to B mesons, this center-of-mass energy has a similar cross section for electron-positron annihilation to and pairs, meaning Belle II also makes measurements of charm hadron and tau lepton properties. Finally, unique searches for hypothesized dark-sector particles with masses in the range 100 MeV–10 GeV are possible. This article reviews the current results from the Belle II experiment.

Abstract:The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider aims to collect an unprecedented data set of $50~{\rm ab}^{-1}$ to study $CP$-violation in the $B$-meson system and to search for Physics beyond the Standard Model. SuperKEKB is already the world's highest-luminosity collider. In order to collect the planned data set within approximately one decade, the target is to reach a peak luminosity of $\rm 6 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ by further increasing the beam currents and reducing the beam size at the interaction point by squeezing the betatron function down to $\beta^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.3~mm$. To ensure detector longevity and maintain good reconstruction performance, beam backgrounds must remain well controlled. We report on current background rates in Belle II and compare these against simulation. We find that a number of recent refinements have significantly improved the background simulation accuracy. Finally, we estimate the safety margins going forward. We predict that backgrounds should remain high but acceptable until a luminosity of at least $\rm 2.8 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ is reached for $\beta^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.6~mm$. At this point, the most vulnerable Belle II detectors, the Time-of-Propagation (TOP) particle identification system and the Central Drift Chamber (CDC), have predicted background hit rates from single-beam and luminosity backgrounds that add up to approximately half of the maximum acceptable rates.

Quarkonium and charm at Belle II

Abstract:We present recent results from the Belle II experiment related to quarkonium and charm physics. With data samples collected by Belle II during operation of the SuperKEKB collider above the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, we study the processes $e^+e^- \to \omega\chi_{bJ}(1P)$ ($J=0$, 1, or 2), search for the bottomonium equivalent of the X(3872) and measure the exclusive cross sections of $e^+e^- \to B\bar{B}$, $B\bar{B}^*$ and $B^*\bar{B}^*$. We also propose a new algorithm to determine the production flavor of neutral $D$ mesons. Finally, we report on a measurement of the $\Omega_c^0$ lifetime.

Abstract:We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct $\it{CP}$ asymmetries of the decays $B^0 \to K^+ \pi^-$, $B^+ \to K^+ \pi^0$, $B^+ \to K^0 \pi^+$, and $B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0$, and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct $\it{CP}$ asymmetry of the decay $B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0$ and the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-$. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain $387\times 10^6$ bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain $-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04$ for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

Abstract:An upgrade of the existing Flavour Factory KEKB (Tsukuba, Japan) is under construction, and is foreseen for commissioning by the end of 2014. This new e+e− machine ("SuperKEKB") will deliver an instantaneous luminosity of 8⋅1035 cm−2s−1, which is 40 times higher than the world record set by KEKB. In order to be able to fully exploit the increased number of events and provide high precision measurements of the decay vertex of the B meson systems in such a harsh environment, the Belle detector will be upgraded ("Belle II") and a new silicon vertex detector, based on the DEPFET technology, will be designed and constructed. The new pixel detector, close to the interaction point, will consist of two layers of DEPFET active pixel sensors. This technology combines the detection together with the in-pixel amplification by the integration, on every pixel, of a field effect transistor into a fully depleted silicon bulk. In Belle II, DEPFET sensors thinned down to 75 μm with low power consumption and low intrinsic noise will be used.

Abstract:B-factories provide a unique environment to test the standard model in search for new physics. The Belle and Belle II experiments succeeded each other at KEK, in Tsukuba, Japan. During its lifetime, Belle collected $1{\,ab}^{-1}$ of data; at the time of this contribution, Belle II recorded $424{\,fb}^{-1}$ more aiming for an unprecedented sample of $50{\,ab}^{-1}$. This unique data set will allow them to search for new physics with unmatched precision. We discuss select recent results from both experiments.

Abstract:We present recent results on charm physics at the Belle and Belle II experiments, covering measurements of charm lifetimes, branching fractions of the decays of charmed mesons and baryons and the decay asymmetry parameters of two-body decays of charmed baryons, searches for rare and forbidden decays, and measurements of $C\!P$ violating parameters in the four-body decays of charmed mesons and two-body decays of charmed baryons.

Abstract:We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries of the decays B0→K+π− , B+→K+π0 , B+→K0π+ , and B0→K0π0 , and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct CP asymmetry of the decay B+→π+π0 and the branching fraction of the decay B0→π+π− . The data are collected with the b elle II detector from e+e− collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain 387×106 bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain −0.03±0.13±0.04 for the sum rule in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.012001 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.
