Abstract:The aim of this note is to show the existence of a large family of Cantorvals arising in the projection description of primitive two-letter substitutions. This provides a common and naturally occurring class of Cantorvals.

Abstract:In this paper we look at the topological type of algebraic sum of achievement sets. We show that there is a Cantorval such that the algebraic sum of its $k$ copies is still a Cantorval for any $k \in \mathbb{N}$. We also prove that for any $m,p \in (\mathbb{N}\setminus \{1\}) \cup \{\infty\}$, $p \geq m$, the algebraic sum of $k$ copies of a Cantor set can transit from a Cantor set to a Cantorval for $k=m$ and then to an interval for $k=p$. These two main results are based on a new characterization of sequences whose achievement sets are Cantorvals. We also define a new family of achievable Cantorvals which are not generated by multigeometric series. In the final section we discuss various decompositions of sequences related to the topological typology of achievement sets.

Abstract:Let C(a) be the central Cantor set generated by a sequence a with terms in (0,1). It is known that the difference set C(a)-C(a) of C(a) can has one of three possible forms: a finite union of closed intervals, a Cantor set, or a Cantorval. In the previous paper there was proved a sufficient condition for the sequence a which implies that C(a) - C(a) is a Cantorval. In this paper we give different conditions for a sequence a which guarantee the same assertion. We also prove a corollary, which provides infinitely many new examples of Cantorvals.

Abstract:Examples of achievable Cantorvals are constructed with reversed Kakeya conditions only on a set of asymptotic density zero which answers in positive the Problem 5.2 from Marchwicki and Miska (2021). Additionally, the Lebesgue measure of the boundaries of these Cantorvals is found to be zero which does not answer the still open problem of existence of achievable Cantorvals with boundaries of positive measure.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of modulation to pseudomodulation and its subclasses including premodulation, generalized modulation and regular modulation. The motivation is to define the valued analogue of natural quiver, called natural valued quiver, of an artinian algebra so as to correspond to its valued Ext-quiver when this algebra is not k-splitting over the field k. Moreover, we illustrate the relation between the valued Ext-quiver and the natural valued quiver. The interesting fact we find is that the representation categories of a pseudomodulation and of a premodulation are equivalent respectively to that of a tensor algebra of A-path type and of a generalized path algebra. Their examples are given from two kinds of artinian hereditary algebras. Furthermore, the isomorphism theorem is given for normal generalized path algebras with finite (acyclic) quivers and normal premodulations. We give four examples of pseudomodulations: first, group species in mutation theory as a seminormal generalized modulation; second, viewing a path algebra with loops as a premodulation with valued quiver that has no loops; third, differential pseudomodulation and its relation with differential tensor algebras; fourth, a pseudomodulation considered as a free graded category.

Abstract:We consider extended CMV matrices with analytic quasi-periodic Verblunsky coefficients with Diophantine frequency vector in the perturbatively small coupling constant regime and prove the analyticity of the tongue boundaries. As a consequence we establish that, generically, all gaps of the spectrum that are allowed by the Gap Labeling Theorem are open and hence the spectrum is a Cantor set. We also prove these results for a related class of almost periodic Verblunsky coefficients and present an application to suitable quantum walk models on the integer lattice.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the fractal properties of the boundary of the Cantorval connected with Guthrie-Nymann's series. In particular, we prove that such a Cantorval can be represented as a union of open intervals and a Cantor set having zero Lebesgue measure and a fractional Hausdorff dimension. Moreover, we extend the result to a countable family of Cantorvals with a similar structure.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}_n$ denote the set of words $w=w_1\cdots w_n$ on the alphabet of positive integers satisfying $w_{i+1}\leq w_i+1$ for $1 \leq i \leq n-1$ with $w_1=1$. The members of $\mathcal{C}_n$ are known as Catalan words and are enumerated by the $n$-th Catalan number $C_n$. The problem of finding the cardinality of various avoidance classes of $\mathcal{C}_n$ has been an ongoing object of study, and members of $\mathcal{C}_n$ avoiding one or two classical or a single consecutive pattern have been enumerated. In this paper, we extend these results to vincular patterns and seek to determine the cardinality of each avoidance class corresponding to a pattern of type (1,2) or (2,1). In several instances, a simple explicit formula for this cardinality may be given. In the more difficult cases, we find only a formula for the (ordinary) generating function which enumerates the class in question. We make extensive use of functional equations in establishing our generating function results.

Abstract:In the present paper we study the following problem: how to construct a coherent orthoalgebra which has only a finite number of elements, but at the same time does not admit a bivaluation (i.e. a morphism with a codomain being an orthoalgebra with just two elements). This problem is important in the perspective of Bell-Kochen-Specker theory, since one can associate such an orthoalgebra to every saturated non-colorable finite configuration of projective lines. The first result obtained in this paper provides a general method for constructing finite orthoalgebras. This method is then applied to obtain a new infinite family of finite coherent orthoalgebras that do not admit bivaluations. The corresponding proof is combinatorial and yields a description of the groups of symmetries for these orthoalgebras.

Abstract:We provide the first examples of finitely generated simple groups that are amenable (and infinite). This follows from a general existence result on invariant states for piecewise-translations of the integers. The states are obtained by constructing a suitable family of densities on the classical Bernoulli space.

Abstract:An algebra that generates a variety with uncountably many subvarieties is said to be of type $2^{\aleph_0}$. We show that the Rees quotient monoid $M(aabb)$ of order ten is of type $2^{\aleph_0}$, thereby affirmatively answering a recent question of Glasson. As a corollary, we exhibit a new example of type $2^{\aleph_0}$ monoid of order six, which turns out to be minimal and the first of its kind that is finitely based.

From Numbers to Ur-Strings

Abstract:In this paper we examine two ways of coding sequences in arithmetical theories. We investigate under what conditions they work. To be more precise, we study the creation of objects of a data-type that we call ur-strings, roughly sequences where the components are ordered but where we do not have an explicitly given projection function. First, we have a brief look at the beta-function which was already carefully studied by Emil Jeřábek. We study in detail our two target constructions. These constructions both employ theories of strings. The first is based on Smullyan coding and the second on the representation of binary strings in the special linear monoid of the non-negative part of discretely ordered commutative rings as introduced by Markov.

Abstract:We prove in ZFC that there is a MAD family of functions in omega^omega which is also maximal with respect to infinite partial functions. This solves a 20 year old question of Van Douwen. We also strengthen a result of J. Steprans stating that strongly MAD families of functions cannot be analytic. We show that analytic MAD families of functions, if they exist, must satisfy some strong constraints.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study new classes of subVOAs of the lattice vertex operator algebras, which we call the conic, Borel, and parabolic-type subVOAs. These CFT-type VOAs, which are not necessarily strongly finitely generated, satisfy similar properties with the usual Borel and parabolic subalgebras of a Lie algebra. For the lowest-rank nontrivial example of Borel-type subVOA $V_{B}$ of $V_{\Z\al}$, we explicitly determine its Zhu's algebra $A(V_B)$ in terms of generators and relations.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a refinement, due to Nathanson, of the Calkin-Wilf tree. In particular, we study the properties of such trees associated with the matrices $L_u=\begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ u & 1\end{bmatrix}$ and $R_v=\begin{bmatrix} 1 & v \\ 0& 1\end{bmatrix}$, where $u$ and $v$ are nonnegative integers. We extend several known results of the original Calkin-Wilf tree, including the symmetry, numerator-denominator, and successor formulas, to this new setting. Additionally, we study the ancestry of a rational number appearing in a generalized Calkin-Wilf tree.

Abstract:In this note we introduce several instructive examples of bijections found between several different combinatorially defined sequences of sets. Each sequence has cardinalities given by the Catalan numbers. Our results answer some questions posed by R. Stanley in the addendum to his textbook. We actually discuss two types of bijection, one defined recursively and the other defined in a more local, relative, fashion. It is interesting to compare the results of the two.

Abstract:By using the Ringel-Hall algebra approach we first present a new proof of Kac's theorem for species over a finite field. The method used here is quite different from earlier techniques. In [SV] Sevenhant and Van den Bergh have discovered an interesting relation between a conjecture of Kac on representations of quivers and the structure of the Ringel-Hall algebras in some special cases. We second show that this relation still holds for species.

Abstract:The Cantor pairing polynomials are extended to larger 2D sub-domains and more complex mapping, of which the most important property is the bijectivity. If corners are involved inside (but not the borders of) domain, more than one connected polynomials are necessary. More complex patterns need more complex subsequent application of math series to obtain the mapping polynomials which are more and more inconvenient, although elementary. A tricky polynomial fit is introduced (six coefficients are involved like in the original Cantor polynomials with rigorous but simple restrictions on points chosen) to buy out the regular treatment of math series to find the pairing polynomials instantly. The original bijective Cantor polynomial C1(x,y)= (x2+2xy+y2+3x+y)/2: N02 to N0 (=positive integers) which is 2-fold and runs in zig - zag way along lines x+y=N is extended e.g. to the bijective P(x,y)= 2x2+4sgn(x)sgn(y)xy+2y2-2H(x)sgn(y)x-y+1: Z2 to N0 (with sign and Heaviside functions, Z is integers) running in spiral way along concentric rhombuses, or to the bijective P3D(x,y,z)= [x3+y3+z3 +3(xz2+yz2 +zx2+2xyz +zy2+yx2+xy2) +3(2x2+2y2 +z2+2xz +2yz+4xy) +5x+11y+2z]/6: N03 to N0 which is 6-fold and runs along plains x+y+z=N. Storage device for triangle matrices is also commented as cutting the original Cantor domain to half along with related Diophantine equations.

Kleitman's conjecture for central families

Abstract:Chvátal conjectured that a star is amongst the largest intersecting subfamiles of a finite subset-closed family of sets. Kleitman later strengthened Chvátal's conjecture, suggesting that maximal intersecting subfamilies of $2^{[n]}$ when naturally embedded into $\mathbb{R}^{2^{[n]}}$ take on a particular form. We provide a construction which succeeds in expressing certain families as required by Kleitman's conjecture. We then provide a partial characterization of these families, showing central and certain near-central families in particular to be amongst them.
