Abstract:In this paper we will show that finitely generated torsion-free 2-step nilpotent groups of Hirsch length at most 6 do not have the $R_{\infty}$-property, while there are examples of such groups of Hirsch length 7 that do have the $R_{\infty}$-property.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group and $\varphi$ an automorphism of $G$. Two elements $x,y \in G$ are said to be $\varphi$-conjugate if there exists a third element $z \in G$ such that $z x \varphi(z)^{-1} = y$. Being $\varphi$-conjugate defines an equivalence relation on $G$. The group $G$ is said to have the $R_{\infty}$-property if all its automorphisms $\varphi$ have infinitely many $\varphi$-conjugacy classes. For finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups, the so-called Mal'cev completion of the group is a useful tool in studying this property. Two groups have isomorphic Mal'cev completions if and only if they are abstractly commensurable. This raises the question whether the $R_{\infty}$-property is invariant under abstract commensurability within the class of finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups. We show that the answer to this question is negative and provide counterexamples within a class of 2-step nilpotent groups associated to edge-weighted graphs. These groups are commensurable to 2-step nilpotent quotients of right-angled Artin groups.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{T}$ denote the class of finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups. For a group $G$ let $F(G)$ be the set of isomorphism classes of finite quotients of $G$. Pickel proved that if $G \in \mathcal{T}$, then the set $\mathfrak{g}(G)$ of isomorphism classes of groups $H \in \mathcal{T}$ with $F(G)=F(H)$ is finite. We give an explicit description of the sets $\mathfrak{g}(G)$ for the $\mathcal{T}$-groups $G$ of Hirsch length at most $5$. Based on this, we show that for each Hirsch length $n\geq 4$ and for each $m \in \mathbb{N}$ there is a $\mathcal{T}$-group $G$ of Hirsch length $n$ with $\vert\mathfrak{g}(G)\vert\geq m$.

Abstract:We study twisted conjugacy classes of a family of groups which are called Houghton's groups $\mathcal{H}_n$ ($n \in\mathbb{N}$), the group of translations of $n$ rays of discrete points at infinity. We prove that the Houghton's groups $\mathcal{H}_n$ have the $R_{\infty}$ property for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:We present a new method to construct finitely generated, residually finite, infinite torsion groups. In contrast to known constructions, a profinite perspective enables us to control finite quotients and normal subgroups of these torsion groups. As an application, we describe the first examples of residually finite, hereditarily just-infinite groups with positive first $\ell^2$-Betti-number. In addition, we show that these groups have polynomial normal subgroup growth, which answers a question of Barnea and Schlage-Puchta.

Abstract:In the paper we study irreducible representations of some nilpotent groups of finite abelian total rank. The main result of the paper states that if a torsion-free minimax group $G$ of nilpotency class 2 admits a faithful irreducible representation $\varphi $ over a finitely generated field $k$ such that $chark \notin Sp(G)$ then there exist a subgroup $N$ and an irreducible primitive representation $\psi $ of the subgroup $N$ over $k$ such that the representation $\varphi $ is induced from $\psi $ and the quotient group $N/Ker\psi $ is finitely generated.

Abstract:The torsion conjecture says: for any abelian variety A defined over a number field k , the order of the torsion subgroup of A ( k ) is bounded by a constant C ( k, d ) which depends only on the number field k and the dimension d of the abelian variety. The torsion conjecture remains open in general. However, in this paper, a short argument shows that the conjecture is true for more general fields if we consider linear groups instead of abelian varieties. If G is a connected linear algebraic group defined over a field k which is finitely generated over ℚ, Γ is a torsion subgroup of G ( k ). Then the order of Γ is bounded by a constant C ′( k, d ) which depends only on k and the dimension d of G .

Abstract:We show that a non-solvable, torsion-free, virtually solvable group $S$ must have Hirsch length $h(S)\geq10$. If $h(S)<14$ then $A_5$ is the only simple factor. If $S$ is virtually nilpotent and $h(S)\leq14$ then its Fitting subgroup has nilpotency class $\leq3$. (There are virtually abelian examples with $h(S)=15$, and this is known to be best possible for such groups.)

Abstract:In this paper, we show that weakly symmetric $\tau$-tilting finite algebras have positive definite Cartan matrices, which implies that we can prove $\tau$-tilting infiniteness of weakly symmetric algebras by calculating their Cartan matrices. Similarly, we obtain the condition on Cartan matrices that selfinjective algebras are $\tau$-tilting infinite. By applying this result, we show that a group algebra of $(\mathbb{Z}/p^l\mathbb{Z})^n\rtimes H$ is $\tau$-tilting infinite when $p^l\geq n$ and $\#\mathrm{IBr}\,H\geq\min\{p,3\}$, where $p>0$ is the characteristic of the ground field, $H$ is a subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ of degree $n$, the action of $H$ permutes the entries of $(\mathbb{Z}/p^l\mathbb{Z})^n$, and $\mathrm{IBr}\,H$ denotes the set of irreducible $p$-Brauer characters of $H$. Moreover, we show that under the assumption that $p^l\geq n$ and $H$ is a $p'$-subgroup of $\mathfrak{S}_n$, $\tau$-tilting finiteness of a group algebra of a group $(\mathbb{Z}/p^l\mathbb{Z})^n\rtimes H$ is determined by its $p$-hyperfocal subgroup.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a field $K.$ We study finite generation properties of the profinite group $\mathrm{Gal}(\Omega/K)$ and of certain closed normal subgroups thereof, where $\Omega$ is the torsion field of $A$ over $K$. In fact, we establish more general finite generation properties for monodromy groups attached to smooth projective varieties via étale cohomology. We apply this in order to give an independent proof and generalizations of a recent result of Checcoli and Dill about small exponent subfields of $\Omega/K$ in the number field case. We also give an application of our finite generation results in the realm of permanence principles for varieties with the weak Hilbert property.

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.

Abstract:If $G$ is a nilpotent group with a balanced presentation and $G\not\cong\mathbb{Z}^3$ then $\beta_1(G;\mathbb{Q})\leq2$ \cite{Hi22}. We show that if such a group $G$ has an abelian normal subgroup $A$ such that $G/A\cong\mathbb{Z}^2$ then $G$ is torsion-free and has Hirsch length $h(G)\leq4$. On the other hand, if $\beta_1(G;\mathbb{Q})=1$ and $G$ has an abelian normal subgroup $A$ such that $G/A\cong\mathbb{Z}$ then $G\cong\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}\rtimes_n\mathbb{Z}$, for some $m,n\not=0$ such that $m$ divides a power of $n-1$.

Abstract:The Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet heuristics lead one to conjecture that the average size of the $p$-torsion in class groups of $G$-extensions of a number field is finite. In a 2021 paper, Lemke Oliver, Wang, and Wood proved this conjecture in the case of $p = 3$ for permutation groups $G$ of the form $C_2 \wr H$ for a broad family of permutation groups $H$, including most nilpotent groups. However, their theorem does not apply for some nilpotent groups of interest, such as $H = C_5$. We extend their results to prove that the average size of $3$-torsion in class groups of $C_2 \wr H$-extensions is finite for any nilpotent group $H$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a random torsion-free nilpotent group generated by two random words of length $\ell$ in $U_n(\mathbb{Z})$. Letting $\ell$ grow as a function of $n$, we analyze the step of $G$, which is bounded by the step of $U_n(\mathbb{Z})$. We prove a conjecture of Delp, Dymarz, and Schafer-Cohen, that the threshold function for full step is $\ell = n^2$.

Abstract:The main result in this paper is the failure of the finitely generated intersection property (FGIP) of ascending HNN extensions of non-cyclic finite rank free groups. This class of group consists of free-by-cyclic groups and properly ascending HNN extensions of free groups. We also give a sufficient condition for the failure of the FGIP in the context of relative hyperbolicity, we apply this to free-by-cyclic groups of exponential growth.

Abstract:Abstract We show that a torsion-free nilpotent loop (that is, a loop nilpotent with respect to the dimension filtration) has a torsion-free nilpotent left multiplication group of, at most, the same class. We also prove that a free loop is residually torsion-free nilpotent and that the same holds for any free commutative loop. Although this last result is much stronger than the usual residual nilpotence of the free loop proved by Higman, it is established, essentially, by the same method.

Abstract:We study HKT structures on nilpotent Lie groups and on associated nilmanifolds. We exhibit three weak HKT structures on $\R^8$ which are homogeneous with respect to extensions of Heisenberg type Lie groups. The corresponding hypercomplex structures are of a special kind, called abelian. We prove that on any 2-step nilpotent Lie group all invariant HKT structures arise from abelian hypercomplex structures. Furthermore, we use a correspondence between abelian hypercomplex structures and subspaces of ${\frak sp}(n)$ to produce continuous families of compact and noncompact of manifolds carrying non isometric HKT structures. Finally, geometrical properties of invariant HKT structures on 2-step nilpotent Lie groups are obtained.

Abstract:Let $M$ be an open (complete and non-compact) manifold with $\mathrm{Ric}\ge 0$ and escape rate not $1/2$. It is known that under these conditions, the fundamental group $\pi_1(M)$ has a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent subgroup $\mathcal{N}$ of finite index, as long as $\pi_1(M)$ is an infinite group. We show that the nilpotency step of $\mathcal{N}$ must be reflected in the asymptotic geometry of the universal cover $\widetilde{M}$, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of an isometric $\mathbb{R}$-orbit: there exist an asymptotic cone $(Y,y)$ of $\widetilde{M}$ and a closed $\mathbb{R}$-subgroup $L$ of the isometry group of $Y$ such that its orbit $Ly$ has Hausdorff dimension at least the nilpotency step of $\mathcal{N}$. This resolves a question raised by Wei and the author.
