Abstract:The triplet excited states of ketones are found to effect selective H-atom abstraction from strong amide N–H bonds in the presence of weaker C–H bonds through a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) pathway. This chemoselectivity results from differences in ionization energy (IE) between functional groups rather than bond dissociation energies (BDEs) arising from the asynchronicity between electron and proton transfer in the PCET process. We show how this strategy may be leveraged to achieve the intramolecular anti-Markovnikov hydroamidation of alkenes to form lactams using camphorquinone as an inexpensive and sustainable photocatalyst.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The aim of this paper is to address the problem of selectively extracting hydrogen atoms from strong amide N–H bonds using photoreductive catalysts of ketone compounds (such as camphorquinone) through a chemically selective unidirectional asynchronous proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) pathway, while avoiding interaction with weaker C–H bonds. Specifically, this method enables the selective generation of acyl radicals in the presence of a large number of weaker C–H bonds, which can then be used for anti-Markovnikov nucleophilic addition reactions of alkenes to form lactams. Compared to traditional bidirectional PCET mechanisms, this strategy offers advantages in chemical selectivity and reaction efficiency, and employs low-cost and low-toxicity catalysts, thereby providing a greener approach to synthetic chemistry.
