Abstract:In my first lecture I looked at a method of interpreting the world and texts based on the individuation of the relationships of sympathy that link microcosm and macrocosm to one another. Both a metaphysic and a physic of universal sympathy must stand upon a semiotics (explicit or implicit) of similarity.Michel Foucault has already dealt with the paradigm of similarity in Les mots et les choses [“words and things”, English translation: The Order of Things], but here he was principally concerned with that threshold moment between the Renaissance and the seventeenth century in which the paradigm of similarity dissolves into the paradigm of modern science.

Abstract:Abstract This paper focuses on the relation between icon and depiction and their equally central role both in verbal and in nonverbal artistic texts. For this purpose, I will examine the contact points between Jakobson and Bakhtin’s theory of text. In particular, I will dwell on Jakobson’s “Quest for the essence of language” and on Bakhtin’s “The Problem of the Text in Linguistics, Philology, and the Human Sciences.” Both Jakobson and Bakhtin build their idea of text on this dialogue between different dimensions. According to Bakhtin dialogical logic is the specific logic of the text. Though indispensable in the initial phase of understanding, the first is reductive if it claims to exhaust the semantic import of the text. Both in Bakhtin and in Jakobson, this idea of text based upon a dialogue between different dimensions implies that sign expression cannot be exhausted in representation because there is something which exceeds representation. I will call this excedent element “depiction.” Depiction is what is at stake in the artistic text, what exceeds the symbolic level of representation. “Depiction” can be configured, both in verbal and non-verbal text, as an idea of iconicity which exceeds resemblance and immediate visibility.

Abstract:La plus populaire parmi les triades de Peirce distingue les symboles (en rapport arbitraire avec leur objet), les icônes (en rapport de similarité avec leur objet), les indices (en rapport physique avec leur objet). Même si Peirce voyait ces trois catégories en relation réciproque, sans jamais parler de signes qui soient seulement des icônes, des indices ou des symboles, cette distinction est désormais d'usage universel. Abstract:Abstract In this article, I attempt to set out and discuss the main trajectories of Umberto Eco’s thinking on the media and mass communication, based on a review of the author’s writings on these subjects. What emerges from the study is Eco’s attention to the public and to forms of reception; his attention to the relationship between media communication and reality, which involves investigating the concept of “truth” in an area such as that of mass communication; his cross-media view of information, seen from a pluralistic and polyphonic viewpoint; the ethical tension that is always present in Eco’s work; his unfailing propensity for teaching. What emerges above all is the way in which the theoretical and practical tools used by Eco were developed in the context of reflections on the media and mass communication: an indication that alongside its “philosophical vocation,” Eco’s semiotics was always characterized also by an essential “empirical vocation.”

Esta tendencia resume una serie de mejoras en las tecnologías de la visualización de manera de poder crear nuevas imágenes que representan la explosiva variación de la expresión cultural en el mundo. La semiótica cultural en general y la semiótica de la imagen en particular se benefician del progreso alcanzado por la biosemiótica, un campo que saca a la luz la riqueza de la Naturaleza como un inmenso libro de signos. Desde los trabajos de F. de Saussure y de C. S. Peirce en adelante, estamos en mejores condiciones de exponer e interpretar la relación entre significante y significado en una miríada de objetos de enunciación y significación. Este artículo retoma los principales conceptos que forman parte de la teoría de la semiótica y ofrece una reflexión acerca de la materia en relación con las afirmaciones y múltiples enlaces con la filosofía del lenguaje en la obra de U. Eco. English Abstract: In the face of contemporary visual culture evolution, semiotics of the image, as a discipline and domain, evolves accordingly. This trend epitomizes a series of improvements in visualization technologies so as to create new images that represents the explosive variation of cultural expression worldwide. Cultural semiotics in general and the semiotics of the image in particular seizes on the progress achieved by biosemiotics, a field that dredges up the unevenness of Nature as an immense book of signs. From the works of F. de Saussure and C. S. Peirce onwards, we are able to expound and interpret the relation between signifier and signified in a myriad of signification objects. This paper retakes the main concepts that encompasses the semiotics theory and the principles of semiotic meaning making and also offers a reflection about the subject matter in connection with U. Eco´s statements and linkages with the philosophy of language.
