Abstract:Li (Algebra 71:2823–2838, 2023) recently obtained several improvements on some partial trace inequalities for positive semidefinite block matrices. In this note, we present analogous partial trace inequalities involving partial transpose of positive semidefinite block matrix. The inequalities we show could be regarded as complements of Li's results. In addition, some new partial trace inequalities for partial transpose of positive semidefinite block matrix are included.

Abstract:In this work, block checkerboard sign pattern matrices are introduced and analyzed. They satisfy the generalized Perron–Frobenius theorem. We study the case related to total positive matrices in order to guarantee bidiagonal decompositions and some linear algebra computations with high relative accuracy. A result on intervals of checkerboard matrices is included. Some numerical examples illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:We describe recent work of Kim in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1210.5190" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1210.5190">arXiv:1210.5190</a> to show that operator convex functions associated with quasi-entropies can be used to prove a large class of new matrix inequalities in the tri-partite and bi-partite setting by taking a judiciously chosen partial trace over all but one of the spaces. We give some additional examples in both settings. Furthermore, we observe that the equality conditions for all the new inequalities are essentially the same as those for strong subadditivity.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain some new matrix inequalities involving Hadamard product. Also some Hadamard product inequalities for accretive matrices involving the matrix means, positive unital linear maps and matrix concave functions are investigated. Among other results, it is shown that if $A, B, C, D$ are $n\times n$ positive definite matrices, then \begin{equation*} \left(\alpha A+\beta B\right)^r\circ\left(\alpha C+\beta D\right)^{1-r}\leq \alpha\left(A^r\circ C^{1-r}\right)+\beta\left(B^r\circ D^{1-r}\right), \end{equation*} where $r \in (-1, 0) \cup (1, 2)$ and $" \circ "$ stands for the Hadamard product.

Abstract:We first present a determinant inequality related to partial traces for positive semidefinite block matrices. Our result extends a result of Lin [Czech. Math. J. 66 (2016)] and improves a result of Kuai [Linear Multilinear Algebra 66 (2018)]. Moreover, we provide a unified treatment of a result of Ando [ILAS Conference (2014)] and a recent result of Li, Liu and Huang [Operators and Matrices 15 (2021)]. Furthermore, we also extend some determinant inequalities involving partial traces to a larger class of matrices whose numerical ranges are contained in a sector. In addition, some extensions on trace inequalities for positive semidefinite $2\times 2$ block matrices are also included.

Abstract:It is well known that, under some assumptions, the limit distribution of random block matrices and their partial transposition converges to the distributions of random variables in some noncommutative probability space. Using free probability theory, we obtain the relation between the free cumulants of the corresponding random variables. As an application, we are able to derive a new family of co-completely positive and k-positive maps by using the Wishart ensemble.

Abstract:This paper presents a full rank factorization of a 2×2 block matrix without any restriction concerning the group inverse. Applying this factorization, we obtain an explicit representation of the group inverse in terms of four individual blocks of the partitioned matrix without certain restriction. We also derive some important coincidence theorems, including the expressions of the group inverse with Banachiewicz-Schur forms.

Abstract:A class of constraint preconditioners for solving two-by-two block linear equations with the (1,2)-block being the transpose of the (2,1)-block and the (2,2)-block being zero was investigated in a recent paper of Cao (Numer Math. 2006; 103:47-61). In this short note, we extend his idea by allowing the (1,2)-block to be not equal to the transpose of the (2,1)-block. Abstract:Chien, Liu, Nakazato, and Tam proved that all n by n classical Toeplitz matrices (one-level Toeplitz matrices) are unitarily similar to complex symmetric matrices via two types of unitary matrices and the type of the unitary matrices only depends on the parity of n. In this paper, we extend their result to multilevel Toeplitz matrices that any multilevel Toeplitz matrix is unitarily similar to a complex symmetric matrix. We provide a method to construct the unitary matrices that uniformly turn any multilevel Toeplitz matrix to a complex symmetric matrix by taking tensor products of these two types of unitary matrices for one-level Toeplitz matrices according to the parity of each level of the multilevel Toeplitz matrices. In addition, we introduce a class of complex symmetric matrices that are unitarily similar to some p-level Toeplitz matrices.

Abstract:Tian and Styan have shown many rank equalities for the sum of two and three idempotent matrices and pointed out that rank equalities for the sum P 1 + ⋯ + P k with P 1 , ... , P k be idempotent ( k > 3 ) are still open. In this paper, by using block Gaussian elimination, we obtained rank equalities for the sum of finitely many idempotent matrices and then solved the open problem mentioned above. Extensions to scalar-potent matrices and some related matrices are also included.

Abstract:Diagonally dominant matrices have many applications in systems and control theory. Linear dynamical systems with scaled diagonally dominant drift matrices, which include stable positive systems, allow for scalable stability analysis. For example, it is known that Lyapunov inequalities for this class of systems admit diagonal solutions. In this paper, we present an extension of scaled diagonally dominance to block partitioned matrices. We show that our definition describes matrices admitting block-diagonal solutions to Lyapunov inequalities and that these solutions can be computed using linear algebraic tools. We also show how in some cases the Lyapunov inequalities can be decoupled into a set of lower dimensional linear matrix inequalities, thus leading to improved scalability. We conclude by illustrating some advantages and limitations of our results with numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper we prove inequalities for multiplicative analogues of Diophantine exponents, similar to the ones known in the classical case. Particularly, we show that a matrix is badly approximable if and only if its transpose is badly approximable and establish some inequalities connecting multiplicative exponents with ordinary ones.
