Abstract:A novel membrane-less microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC) which used the baffles instead of the ion exchange membrane (IEM) was developed for ammonium-containing wastewater treatment and electricity generation. By means of installing an ideal nitrifying unit between the anodic and cathodic chamber, the novel ML-MFC accomplished organics degradation and nitrogen removal without additional loop. The removal efficiencies of COD, NH4+-N and TN achieved 97.07 +/- 0.47%, 91.76 +/- 3.32% and 87.66 +/- 1.59%, respectively. Meanwhile, the effluent pH was near neutral and turbidity was quite low. In addition, the maximum power density of 1.007 +/- 0.032W/m(3) was obtained. Combined with the analysis of microbial community, electroactive bacteria (EAB) Desulfovibrio, Comamonas and Thiobacillus were enriched in biofilm. Considering the superior effluent quality and the promising energy potential, the novel ML-MFC has good application prospects in efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Two-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were operated to remove sulfide and nitrate simultaneously using activated sludge in this study. Compared with control experiment, the MFC showed its ability to remove nitrate and sulfide simultaneously and generate electricity. When the external resistance was 1000 0, the initial concentrations of sulfide and nitrate were about 60 and 10.5 mg L-1, respectively, maximum current density of the MFC was 138.31 mA m(-2). In the end of a typical cycle, it decreased to 12.20 mA m(-2). The main end products were nitrogen and sulfate. The microorganisms attached to the anode electrode had electrochemical activity, and the transfer mechanism of electron in MFC was different from that in control MFC. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:An anodic denitrification MFC(AD-MFC)was constructed by inoculating denitrifying bacteria enrichment culture into anode chamber of a dual-chamber MFC, and its capacity of denitrification and electricity production was investigated with methanol as electron donor and nitrate as acceptor in a batch cultivation mode. When initial nitrate and COD concentration were (100.22 ± 0.62)mg·L-1 and (500.40 ± 1.67)mg·L-1, the volumetric nitrogen and COD removal rates reached 0.31 kg N·m-3·d-1 and 1.06 kg COD·m-3·d-1, respectively, coupled with the maximum voltage of (602.80±5.42)mV and the maximum power density of (908.42 ± 0.07)mW·m-3. The results demonstrated that power generation in the AD-MFC was due to a coupling of methanol oxidation and nitrate reduction, and voltage changes were closely related to denitrification, indicating the course of denitrification. Voltage curves of the AD-MFC showed three-phase characteristics of descend phase, ascend phase and redescend phase, which could be ascribed to the succession of denitrification, methanol degradation and cell hydrolysate fermentation as dominant reaction in the anolyte. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:A coupled microbial fuel cell (MFC) system comprising of an oxic-biocathode MFC (O-MFC) and an anoxic-biocathode MFC (A-MFC) was implemented for simultaneous removal of carbon and nitrogen from a synthetic wastewater. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the influent was mainly reduced at the anodes of the two MFCs; ammonium was oxidized to nitrate in the O-MFC's cathode, and nitrate was electrochemically denitrified in the A-MFC's cathode. The coupled MFC system reached power densities of 14 W/m(3) net cathodic compartment (NCC) and 7.2 W/m(3) NCC for the O-MFC and the A-MFC, respectively. In addition, the MFC system obtained a maximum COD, NH4+-N and TN removal rate of 98.8%, 97.4% and 97.3%, respectively, at an A-MFC external resistance of 5 Omega, a recirculation ratio (recirculated flow to total influent flow) of 2:1, and an influent flow ratio (O-MFC anode flow to A-MFC anode flow) of 1:1. Abstract:In this study, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) that can achieve simultaneous anode anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and electricity generation (anode anammox MFC) by high-effective anammox bacteria fed with purely inorganic nitrogen media was constructed. As the influent concentrations of ammonium (NH4+-N) and nitrite (NO2−-N) gradually increased from 25 to 250 mg/L and 33–330 mg/L, the removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, NO2−-N and TN were over 90%, 90% and 80%, respectively, and the maximum volumetric nitrogen removal rate reached 3.01 ± 0.27 kgN/(m3·d). The maximum voltage and maximum power density were 225.48 ± 10.71 mV and 1308.23 ± 40.38 mW/m3, respectively. Substrate inhibition took place at high nitrogen concentrations (NH4+-N = 300 mg/L, NO2−-N = 396 mg/L). Electricity production performance significantly depended upon the nitrogen removal rate under different nitrogen concentrations. The reported low coulombic efficiency (CE, 4.09–5.99%) may be due to severe anodic polarization. The anode charge transfer resistance accounted for about 90% of the anode resistance. The anode process was the bottleneck for energy recovery and should be further optimized in anode anammox MFCs. The high nitrogen removal efficiency with certain electricity recovery potential in the MFCs suggested that anode anammox MFCs may be used in energy sustainable nitrogen-containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Two-chamber Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC) using graphite rods as electrodes were operated for simultaneous anaerobic sulfide and nitrate removal coupled with electricity generation. The MFC showed good ability to remove substrates. When the influent sulfide and nitrate concentrations were 780 mg/L and 135.49 mg/L, respectively, the removal percentages of sulfide and nitrate were higher than 90% and the main end products were nitrogen and sulfate. The MFC also showed good ability to generate electricity, and the voltage went up with the rise of influent substrate concentrations. When the external resistance was 1000 Ω, its highest steady voltage was 71 mV. Based on the linear relationship between the electrons released by substrates and accepted by electrode, it was concluded that the electricity generation was coupled with the substrate conversion in the MFC.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an emerging technology in the energy and environment field. Its application is limited due to its high cost caused by the utilization of membranes and noble metal catalysts. In this paper, a membraneless MFC, with separated electrode chambers, was designed. The two separated chambers are connected via a channel and the continuous electrolyte flow from anode to cathode drives proton transfer. The proton mass transfer coefficiency in this MFC is 0.9086cm/s, which is higher than reported MFCs with membranes, such as J-cloth and glass fiber. The maximum output voltage is 160.7mV, with 1000Ω resistor. Its peak power density is 24.33mW/m3. SCOD removal efficiency can reach 90.45% via this MFC. If the connection between the two electrode chambers is blocked, the performance of MFC will decrease severely. All the above results prove the feasibility and advantages of this special MFC model.

Abstract:A scaled up microbial fuel cell (MFC) of a 50 L volume was set up with an oxic-anoxic two-stage biocathode and activated semicoke packed electrodes to achieve simultaneous power generation and nitrogen and organic matter removals. An average maximum power density of 43.1 W·m−3 was obtained in batch operating mode. By adjusting the two external resistances, the denitrification in the A-MFC and power production in the O-MFC could be enhanced. In continuous mode, when the hydraulic retention times were set at 6 h, 8 h and 12 h, the removal efficiencies of COD, NH 4 + -N and total nitrogen (TN) were higher than 95%, 97%, and 84%, respectively. Meanwhile the removal loads for COD, NH 4 + -N and TN were10, 0.37 and 0.4 kg·(m3·d)−1, respectively.

Abstract:A novel integrated single-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cell - anaerobic membrane bioreactor (ScMFC-AnMBR) system was designed. It involved an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) and a single-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cell (ScMFC) being constructed in a common reaction chamber to enhance methane production and reduce membrane fouling in the AnMBR. Results indicated that ScMFC-AnMBR delivered a stable micro-bioelectric field environment with a voltage output of 95 ± 4 mV. Compared with conventional AnMBR (C-AnMBR), methane production using this system increased by 35.89%. Soluble microbial product (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) dropped by 65.3% and 43.1%, respectively. Particularly, the transmembrane pressure (TMP) in the operating cycle was in a slow growth status with the maximum value of only 18.5 kPa. The bioelectric field helped aceticlastic methanogens (Methanosaeta) replace hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanobacterium) as the dominant methanogens via electron transfer under a closed-circuit scenario. As syntrophic bacteria of methanogens (Syntrophobacter, Smithella and Syner-01) and exoelectrogens of Desulfovibrio were selected by the bioelectric field and gained a stable foothold, bio-foulant (Megasphaera) was significantly reduced. The complex microbial synergism in ScMFC-AnMBR greatly improved the methanogenic performance, thus effectively alleviated membrane fouling and prolonged the operation cycle of the system. Demonstrated here is the feasibility of practical application.

Enrichment, performance, and microbial diversity of a thermophilic mediatorless microbial fuel cell

Abstract:A thermophilic mediatorless microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC) was developed for continuous electricity production while treating artificial wastewater concurrently. A maximum power density of 1030 +/- 340 mW/m2 was generated continuously at 55 degrees C with an anode retention time of 27 min (11 mL h(-1)) and continuous pumping of air-saturated phosphate buffer into the cathode compartment at the retention time of 0.7 min (450 mL h(-1)). Meanwhile, about 80% of the electrons available from acetate oxidation were recovered as current. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and direct 16S-rRNA gene analysis revealed that the bacterial diversity in this ML-MFC system was lower than the inoculum. Direct 16S rDNA analysis showed that the dominant bacteria representing 57.8% of total population in anode compartment was phylogenetically very closely related to an uncultured clone, clone E4. Two sheets of graphite used as the anode showed different dominant bacterial population. For the first time, it is shown that thermophilic electrochemically active bacteria can be enriched to concurrently generate electricity and treat artificial wastewater in a thermophilic ML-MFC.

Abstract:Wastewater remediation using microbial fuel cells (MFC) is an advanced method to produce energy and reduce environmental pollution, yet actual energy yields are low and mineral matter is hardly removed. Here we constructed a dual-membrane cylinder photo-microbial fuel cell (DCP-MFC), equipped with cation and anion exchange membranes, to produce electricity and microalgae, and to remove both organics and minerals. Results show that this cell displayed higher electric generation capacity, of 671.6 mV and 0.39 W/m2, during 1000 h of stable running, than the control cell, of 601.2 mV and 0.31 W/m2. Microalgal biomass increased from 2.90 to 3.80 g/L owing to dissolved oxygen scavenging. Nitrogen recovery increased from 0 to 92.6%. Energy yield increased from 2.33 kJ for the control MFC to 118.28 kJ for microalgal cultivation, and to 155.21 kJ for the DCP-MFC. Microbial community analysis revealed that nitrate was mostly converted into nitrite by denitrifying bacteria in the anode chamber, then used by microalgae in the cathode chamber of the DCP-MFC.

Abstract:The present study demonstrated simultaneous electricity generation and nitrification in a two-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) with aerobic biocathode seeded with nitrifying bacteria. Nitrification process and power production simultaneously happening in the same region not only saved energy consumption of aeration by making the best use of oxygen, but also produced additional proton by nitrification process, which effectively prevented alkaline at the cathode caused by power production. The maximum nominal current and maximum power density were 47 mA and 45.50 W/m3, respectively. The NH4+ -N removal rate was 5.98 mg/(L x d) when NH4+ -N concentration was 153.4 mg/L. The nitrifying bacteria competed with electrochemically-active bacteria for oxygen. However, the nitrification was of little effect on bioelectricity production when oxygen concentration was as high as 3.5-5.0 mg/L. The average cathodic voltage with addition of NH4+ -N was 124 mV higher than that of without NH4+ -N addition when no buffer was added in the medium. Cathodic variations were corresponded with nitrification process. The theoretical calculation of H+ ion proved that, the additional H+ ion produced by nitrification process (8.14 x 10(3) mol) was similar with the H+ ion consumed by power production process (8.54 x 10(-3) mol), which confirmed that nitrification could compensate the pH gradient caused by bioelectricity process in the cathode, and maintained the stable pH value to a certain extent.
Complete nitrogen removal by simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in flat-panel air-cathode microbial fuel cells treating domestic wastewater

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can treat organic compounds from domestic wastewater without aeration, but an additional procedure is required to remove nitrogen. This study developed a flat-panel air-cathode MFC (FA-MFC) that was comprised of five MFC units connected in series and operated to remove organic and nitrogen compounds from domestic wastewater with a short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2.5h. During eight months of operation, the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) increased, reaching 85% and 94%, respectively, and the effluent COD and TN concentrations were 20.7±2.5mg/L and 1.7±0.1mg/L, respectively. The greatest removals of COD and TN were in the first and second unit (0.62kg-N/m3/d of TN removal rate). The FA-MFC system allowed simultaneous removals of COD and TN from domestic wastewater, although it led to minimal power output (6.3W/m3 in the first unit). Because any abiotic ammonia loss was not found under the supplied potential of∼1.1V at a short HRT of 30min, the biological nitrogen removal was thought as a dominant mechanism for TN removal in the FA-MFCs. Microbial community analysis revealed that, near the cathode, Nitrosomonas-like strains contributed to nitrification and Nitratireductor-like strains led to denitrification. Acidovorax-like strains, known for their metabolic diversity, were ubiquitous and appeared to contribute to organics and nitrogen removal in anode and cathode biofilms. This study provides proof of concept that the FA-MFC system has a promise for energy sustainable wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an emerging technique presenting remarkable potential. In the current MFC, an electroactive biofilm anode was inoculated with activated sludge from a local municipal sewage treatment plant. The output voltage peaked at 0.60 V and 0.56 V in MFCs cultured with 2-chlorophenol (MFC-2-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (MFC-2,4-DCP), respectively. The degradation and mineralization efficiency in MFC-2-CP were 100.0% and 82.0%, respectively. Based on the bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, abundant Acinetobacter and Azospirillum existed during both the bioelectricity and biodegradation stages in MFC-2-CP, but different patterns were exhibited in MFC-2,4-DCP. The electrogenic bacteria relied on the electron transfer pathway of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase and terminal oxidase, while the electrons were transferred to the extracellular electrode by cytochrome C, riboflavin, degradation products of CPs and flagella. 2-CP and 2,4-DCP were biodegraded into less toxic cyclohexanol via dichlorination, hydroxylation, and hydrogenation; hereafter, the ring was opened to generate long-chain hydrocarbons, and finally mineralized into CO2 and H2O. This work provided a new strategy for MFCs in power generation and contaminant treatment.

Abstract:The simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technology has better economic and environmental values than conventional sulfate and nitrogen removal process. An anaerobic fluidized bed-microbial fuel cell (AFB-MFC) system was established to elucidate the effect of anodic different nitrate load on contaminant removal, electricity generation and anodic microbial community in a symbiotic ecosystem for sulfate reduction bacteria (SRB) and nitrate-reducing, sulphide-oxidizing bacteria (NR-SOB). Results showed that, when anodic load was 700 mg NO3 ––N/(m3 d), 2.1 kg SO4 2–/ (m3 d) and 3.36 kg CODCr/(m3 d), the removal rate of NO3 ––N, SO4 2– and CODCr was 96.43%, 52.68% and 98.02%, theoretical sulfur yield was 0.92 kg/m3 d, and output voltage and power density were 7.23 mW m–2 and 385.46 mV, respectively. It proved that the AFB-MFC had a good performance in treating organic wastewater containing nitrates and sulfates. Sulfur had also been observed in effluent. As the anodic NO3 – load increased, the diversity of microbial community increased, hydrogen-producing bacteria, SRB and strains related to nitrate removal also increased significantly. The main functional bacteria were Sulfurovum, Desulfomicrobium, Thauera and Sulfurimonas. AFB-MFC system provides a new approach to cost-effective treatment of organic wastewater containing nitrate and sulfate.

Abstract:Although microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been widely studied as wastewater treatment technologies that convert organic matter to electricity, there are few reports of large-scale MFCs that treat both organic matter and nitrogen compounds. In this study, a 226 L reactor equipped with 27 MFC units was partially aerated at 10% of its total volume. The MFC unit consists of a cylindrical air core covered with a carbon-based air cathode, an anion exchange membrane, and a graphite non-woven fabric anode. The air-cathode MFC with 13 L min −1 aeration rate produced a current density of 0.0012–0.15 A m −2 with 40 to >93% biological oxygen demand (BOD) removal to have an effluent BOD of <5–36 mg L −1 at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12–47 h. Meanwhile, 55 ± 17% of the total nitrogen (TN) was removed, resulting in 9.7 ± 3.8 mg L −1 TN in the effluent, although the TN removal was limited at ≥20 °C. The mono-exponential regression for BOD and TN (≥20 °C) estimated that an HRT of 21 h could meet the Japanese effluent quality standards of BOD and TN. Calculation of the total energy recovered via current generation and energy consumed by aeration suggested an energy consumption of 0.22 kW h m −3 . Decreasing the aeration rate and HRT in the reactor would further reduce energy consumption and increase energy production.

Abstract:An air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an efficient and sustainable MFC configuration for recovering electrical energy from organic substances. In this paper, we developed a graphite-granule anode, tubular air-cathode MFC (GTMFC) capable of continuous electricity generation from glucose-based substrates. This GTMFC produced a maximum volumetric power of 50.2Wm−3 at current density of 216Am−3 (REX=22Ω). Electrochemistry impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements demonstrated an overall internal resistance of 27Ω, consisting of ohmic resistance of Rohm=13.8Ω (51.1%), a charge-transfer resistance of Rc=6.1Ω (22.6%) and a diffusion resistance of Rd=7.2Ω (26.3%). Power generation with respect to initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration was described well by an exponential saturation model. Recirculation was to found to have a significant effect on electrochemical performance at low COD concentrations, while such effect was absent at high COD concentrations. This study suggests a feasible and simple method to reduce internal resistance and improve power generation of sustainable air-cathode MFCs.
Microbial fuel cell-upflow biofilter coupling system for deep denitrification and power recovery: Efficiencies, bacterial succession and interactions

Abstract:The excess organic carbon is often added to meet denitrification requirements during municipal wastewater treatment, resulting in the carbon waste and increased risk of secondary pollution. In this study, microbial fuel cell (MFC) was coupled with an up-flow denitrification biofilter (BF), and the long-term performances of denitrification and power output were investigated under the different carbon source concentration. With sodium acetate (NaAc) of 600 mg/L and 300 mg/L, the favorable denitrification efficiencies were obtained (98.60%) and the stable current output was maintained (0.44 mÃ0.48 mA). By supplying NaAc of 150 mg/L, the high denitrification efficiency remained in a high range (89.31%) and the current output maintained at 0.12 mA, while, the denitrification efficiency dropped to 71.34% without coupling MFC. Electron balance analysis indicated that both nitrate removal and electron recovery efficiencies were higher in MFC-BF than that in BF, verifying the improved denitrification and carbon utilization performance. Coupling MFC significantly altered the bacterial community structure and composition, and while, the diversified abundance and distribution of bacterial genera were observed at the different locations. Compared with BF, the more exoelectrogenic genera (Desulfobacterium, Trichococcus) and genera holding both denitrifying and electrogenic functions (Dechloromonas, Geobacter) were found dominated in MFC-BF. Instead, the dominating genera in BF were Dechloromonas, Desulfomicrobium, Acidovorax and etc. By coupling MFC, the more complex and diversified network and the closer interaction relationships between the dominant potential functional genera were found. The study provides a feasible approach to effectively improve the denitrification efficiency and organic carbon recovery for deep denitrification process.

Abstract:A novel membrane-less microbial fuel cell (MFC) with down-flow feeding was constructed to generate electricity. Wastewater was fed directly onto the cathode which was horizontally installed in the upper part of the MFC. Oxygen could be utilized readily from the air. The concentration of dissolved oxygen in the influent wastewater had little effect on the power generation. A saturation-type relationship was observed between the initial COD and the power generation. The influent flow rate could affect greatly the power density. Fed by the synthetic glucose wastewater with a COD value of 3500 mg/L at a flow rate of 4.0 mL/min, the developed MFC could produce a maximum power density of 37.4 mW/m(2). Its applicability was further evaluated by the treatment of brewery wastewater. The system could be scaled up readily due to its simple configuration, easy operation and relatively high power density. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The chemical oxygen demand (COD) in municipal wastewater has become an obstacle for anammox in mainstream applications. In this study, the single chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) was installed as an influent device for a partial nitrification-sequencing batch reactor (PN-SBR) to realize integrating COD removal and partial nitrification. After 80 days of operation, the nitrite accumulation rate reached 93%, while the COD removal efficiency was 56%. The output voltage and the power density of MFC were 66.62 mV and 2.40 W/m 3 , respectively. The content of EPS, especially polysaccharides in the stable phase, has increased compared with the seed sludge. The most dominant genus in MFC anode biofilm and SBR granular sludge was Thauera , which has organic compounds degradation capacity and could degrade nitrate. This study revealed the microbial interaction between MFC and partial nitrification and provided a new strategy for stable ammonia and nitrite supply for mainstream anammox plants.
