Abstract:The self-assembly complexes formed by 2-pyridone derivatives were theoretically studied by the AM1 and DFT methods to determine their binding energies. The UV, IR, and NMR spectra of the complexes were calculated using the INDO/CIS, AM1, and B3LYP/3-21G methods, respectively. It was shown that the complexes could be formed by two monomers via double hydrogen bonding thanks to the negative binding energy. The affinity for binding was increased by substituents in the monomers. But this stimulating effect depended on the simultaneous influence of the electronic and steric effects. The first absorption bands in the UV spectra of the complexes were blue-shifted relative to that of the monomer because of their larger LUMO-HOMO energy gaps. As hydrogen bonds were formed, the N-H stretching vibrations of the monomers were weakened in the IR spectra of the complexes. And the chemical shifts of the C=C and C≡C carbon atoms were shifted downfield in the 13C NMR spectra.
Understanding the Hydrogen-Bonded Clusters of Ammonia (NH 3 ) n ( n = 3–6): Insights from the Electronic Structure Theory

Abstract:Although it is well known that hydrogen bonds commonly exist in ammonia clusters and play an important role, there are still many challenges in understanding the electronic structure properties of hydrogen bonds. In this paper, the geometric and electronic structure properties of cyclic ammonia clusters are investigated by using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and the Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2). The calculation results show that the pentamer and hexamer have deviated from the perfect plane, while the trimer and tetramer present planarization that has been confirmed by infrared (IR) spectra. The electronic structure analysis further shows that the covalent properties play a non-negligible role in hydrogen bonding. The results also indicate that the electronic structure facilitates structure planarization. Our work not only provides insight into the role and nature of hydrogen bonds in ammonia clusters but also provides a theoretical basis for frontier science in fields such as atmospheric haze and biomolecular functions.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopy of protonated dimethylamine clusters, H+(DMA)n, (n = 3 - 7), and their Ar-tagged clusters was performed in the NH and CH stretching vibrational region to explore their hydrogen bond network structures. Stable isomer search and vibrational spectral simulations of the clusters were also carried out to support interpretations of the observed spectra. Weakly hydrogen-bonded NH stretching vibrational bands, which are characteristic to cyclic structures of small-sized protonated clusters, are observed in the spectra of the Ar-tagged clusters of n ≥ 5, while only the linear chain type structures are suggested for the Ar-tagged clusters of n = 3 – 4 and the bare clusters of all the sizes. These results demonstrate that the size and temperature dependence of the hydrogen bond network structures of the protonated dimethylamine clusters is analogous to that of protonated monohydric alcohol clusters.

Spectroscopic and Chemical Reactivity Manifestations of Strong Hydrogen Bonding: HCNH Proton–proton Coupling and Alkylation Reactions of Amines

Abstract:Two useful but quite different manifestations of strong hydrogen bonding in systems containing NH groups are reported and discussed. The pKa limit for observation of proton–proton HNCH spin-spin coupling in N-methylanilines is shown to be related to the strength of added H-bond electron donors so that Ph3PO, Ph3AsO, and F− in particular are useful reagents for resolving this type of coupling. The mechanism of hydrogen exchange between anilines and water and the role of the added electron donors are discussed. Strong H-bonding between anilines or benzylamines and F− causes pronounced changes in the chemical reactivity of the amine. Results of experiments on the alkylation of these amines using potassium and tetra-n-butylammonium fluorides demonstrate the synthetic utility of this effect.

Abstract:IR spectra have been performed to study the structures and interactions in N-methylacetamide and water mixtures. Because of the competitions of acceptor and donor of the strong hydrogen bonds, some interesting phenomena of red shifts and blue shifts are observed in νCO and νN–H. It is due to the blue-shifting C–H⋯O hydrogen bond, the νC–H blue shifts more obviously. Then some representative cluster structures are suggested and further investigated by density functional theory method. The changes in bond length and frequency shift of the structures give good reasons for the red shift and blue shift, which represents excellent agreement with the IR experiment. The investigations of IR spectra and DFT calculations reveal that the weak C–H⋯O interactions play different roles compared with the classical strong hydrogen bonds in the NMA–water mixtures.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH 3 ) is a pyramidal symmetric top molecule with inversion motion and it exists in two distinct nuclear spin isomeric forms, ortho -NH 3 ( K = 3n) and para -NH 3 ( K ≠ 3n). Here, a pair of electric dipole-allowed [ R Q(4,3) and P P(2,2)] and weak forbidden [ O P(3,3) and S Q(8,1)] transitions of gas-phase NH 3 were probed in the ν 4 fundamental vibrational band occurring at 6.2 μ m mid-IR interference-free spectral region using an external-cavity quantum cascade laser coupled cavity ring-down spectrometer. We have experimentally achieved the ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of (1.03 ± 0.24) and (1.08 ± 0.14) at room temperature (296 K) for the allowed and forbidden transitions of NH 3 , respectively. Furthermore, our experimental findings confirm that the nuclear spin-symmetry is conserved under the nonreactive perturber-induced collisional processes. This study paves the way to directly probe the nuclear spin-isomers of gas-phase NH 3 and thus may lead to an in-depth understanding of nuclear spin-isomerism associated with various physical and chemical processes.

Ab initio molecular orbital calculations of the infrared spectra of hydrogen-bonded complexes of water, ammonia and hydroxylamine

Abstract:The geometries of three hydrogen-bonded dimers of hydroxylamine have been optimized, at the MP2 level of theory, using the 6-31G** basis set. These calculations yielded three separate local minima on the dimer potential energy surface. The interaction energies of these three species have been calculated, and corrected for basis set superposition error. The infrared band wavenumbers and intensities have been computed, and the monomer-dimer wavenumber shifts and intensity enhancements rationalized in terms of the types and strengths of hydrogen bonds present. The predicted wavenumbers have been correlated with those measured in a recent matrix isolation spectroscopic study, and an argument for the structure of the preferred dimer has been presented.
Photodissociation of deuterated pyrrole-ammonia clusters: H-atom transfer or electron coupled proton transfer?

Abstract:Several years ago the discovery of a conical intersection offered an explanation for the ultafast photodissociation of pyrrole. Subsequently, the photodissociation of pyrrol ammonia complexes PyH*(NH3)n with n  3 was studied in the gas phase as model for a hydrogen bond forming solvent. Two alternative mechanisms, electron coupled proton transfer (ECPT) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT, also called the impulsive model, IM), have been proposed. The parent 1:1 complex was never studied, due to the short lifetime of the NH4 radical fragment. Here we report experiments on the deuterated species PyD*(ND3)n, including the 1:1 complex (n = 1). The velocity distribution of the ND4 radical is well approximated by a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of T  530 K, with a negative anisotropy parameter of β = -0.3. The impulsive model predicts a much narrower velocity distribu-tion with larger negative anisotropy. The ECPT model predicts a long lived intermediate that should allow thermal equilibration of the vibrational energy but should also destroy the rotational memory of the initially excited state. The average kinetic energy agrees with the prediction of the impulsive model, whereas the wide range of kinetic energies is more in line with ECPT. Hence the mechanism seems to be more complex and requires further theoretical modelling.

Structure-function relationships in rat brain stem subnucleus interpolaris. VIII. Cortical inputs.

Abstract:1. Spinal trigeminal (SpV) subnucleus interpolaris (SpVi) receives inputs from trigeminal (V) first- and second-order neurons, monoamine-containing brain stem nuclei, and somatosensory cortex. Prior studies suggest that SpVi receptive-field (RF) properties cannot be predicted solely on the basis of primary afferent inputs. To assess the cortico-V projection and its role in SpVi RFs, anatomic and electrophysiological experiments were conducted. 2. Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) or wheat-germ-agglutinized horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) were used as anterograde tracers to study cortico-V axons in 24 normal adult rats. Injections into SI barrel cortex-labeled pyramidal fibers that decussated at all levels of the V brain stem complex, though crossing fibers were most numerous in the pyramidal decussation and pons. A small number of axons projected to ipsilateral V brain stem subnuclei. PHA-L-labeled pyramidal fibers did not give rise to collaterals in their descent through the pons and medulla. 3. Heaviest terminal labeling occurred contralaterally and in the maxillary portion of caudalis laminae III-V. Moderately dense reaction product was seen in ventral portions of all other contralateral V brain stem subnuclei, as well as in laminae I and II of caudalis. Subnucleus oralis contained the least amount of label contralateral to the injection site. Ipsilateral projections were weak and most dense in principalis. 4. Cortico-V projections were topographic between matching whisker representations. Axons most commonly had longitudinal orientations and stringy shapes. Terminal boutons occurred at the ends of short collateral branches. Many of these collaterals were derived from axons that ascended through caudal V brian stem subnuclei after crossing in the lower medulla. 5. Cortico-V labeling was heavier in septal regions between single whisker representations. This "honeycomb-like" termination pattern was most pronounced in contralateral caudalis and SpVi and ipsilateral principalis. 6. In 13 other adult rats, right SI cortex was aspirated followed by single-unit recordings in left SpVi under pentobarbital sodium anesthesia. In 9 of these, chronic effects were evaluated by recording the responses of 346 left SpVi cells 4-55 days after the lesion. In the remaining four rats, acute effects were analyzed by recording the responses of 190 SpVi cells on the day of the lesion.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
The change in prevalence of wheeze in seven year old children over 19 years.

Abstract:OBJECT to determine the change in prevalence of wheeze on clinical examination and history over a 19 year period. METHODS a survey of random samples of seven year old children at primary schools in an urban area (Hutt Valley). Outcome measures were answers to a questionnaire and auscultation of children's chest for wheeze. RESULTS in 1971, 1981, and 1990, the point prevalence of clinical wheeze by auscultation remained steady between 3.2% and 5.9%. However there was a significant increase in the prevalence of reported wheeze from 23% to 36% (p less than 0.001). Between 1981 and 1990 there was a 10.7% increase in the number of children who had been to their general practitioner for wheeze (p less than 0.001), a 5.3% increase in children who were on daily medication (p less than 0.001) and a 8.2% increase in the family history of asthma (p less than 0.001). There was no significant increase in the number of children who had been to hospital for wheezing. The proportion of children who were found to be wheezing on the day and whose parents did not identify a problem in their child had not changed between 1981 and 1990. CONCLUSION there was an increasing high level of wheeze reported in the Hutt Valley with a corresponding steady level of clinical wheeze. More educational efforts are needed by primary health care workers to improve on parental perception of wheeze because a steady third of those children who were found to be clinically wheezing were recognised by their parents to have a problem.
Vibronic fine structure in the nitrogen 1s photoelectron spectra from Franck-Condon simulations. III. Rules for amine/imine N atoms in small N-heterocycles

Abstract:Vibronic coupling plays a crucial role in X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of molecules. In a series of three papers, we present a comprehensive exploration of the N-heterocycles family, known for their diverse structures, to summarize the general rules of vibronic coupling in high-resolution vibrationally-resolved XPS spectra at the N1s edge. Building upon our previous studies on six-membered monocyclic azines [Phys. Rev. A 106, 022811 (2022)] and fused bicyclic compounds indoles with five and six members [Phys. Rev. A 108, 022816 (2023)], in this study, we focus on investigating a series of 12 five-membered N-heterocycles using Franck-Condon simulations, incorporating Duschinsky rotation effects and density functional theory. Our calculations reveal distinct spectral characteristics of amine and imine within these 12 systems in binding energies, spectral characteristics, structural changes, vibrational coupling strengths, and effects of hydrogenation. Furthermore, we expand our analysis to encompass all 35 N-heterocycles discussed in the three papers and consolidate these findings into the general rules. we find that 1s ionization in amine nitrogen induces more substantial geometrical changes, resulting in larger vibronic coupling strength compared to imine nitrogens. The spectra of imine nitrogens exhibit two distinct characteristic peaks originating from the 0-0 and 0-1 transitions, whereas the spectra of amine nitrogens are characterized by a broad peak with numerous weak fingerprints due to significant mixing of various 0-$n$ transitions. We observe that amine (imine) nitrogens generally cause a negative (positive) change in zero-point vibrational energy. This study provides valuable insights into vibronic coupling in N-heterocycles, shedding light on the distinguishing features and behavior of amine and imine nitrogens in vibrationally-resolved XPS spectra.

Inconsistent hydrogen bond-mediated vibrational coupling of amide I

Abstract:Using infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we scrutinized an amide (dimethylformamide) as a "model" compound to interpret the interactions of amide 1 with different phenol derivatives ( para -chlorophenol (PCP) and para -cresol (CP)) as "model guest molecules". We established the involvement of amide I in vibrational coupling with symmetric and asymmetric CC modes of different phenolic derivatives and how their coupling was dependent upon different guest aromatic phenolic compounds. Interestingly, substitution of phenol perturbed the pattern of vibrational coupling with amide I. The symmetric and asymmetric CC modes of PC were coupled significantly with amide 1. For PCP, the symmetric CC mode coupled significantly, but the asymmetric mode coupled negligibly, with amide I. Here, we reveal the nature of vibrational coupling based on the structure of a guest molecule hydrogen-bonded with amide I. Our conclusions could be valuable for depiction of the unusual dynamics of coupled amide-I modes as well as the dependency of vibrational coupling on altered factors.

The British Army and Counterinsurgency: The Salience of Military Culture

Abstract:The British Army has excelled in small-unit, antiguerrilla warfare as they did in other aspects of counterinsurgency. History had given them an army that was relatively small and decentralized and, therefore, ideally suited to such warfare. Since Britain is an island nation, the navy and not the army has been its first line of defense. Distrusted and underfunded, the junior service was thus relatively unaffected by the revolution in size and organization experienced by continental armies during the nineteenth century. Thomas R. Mockaitis (1) HISTORICALLY, British Army culture has influenced its approach to counterinsurgency. The British Army's experiences in small wars and counterinsurgencies during the 19th and 20th centuries remain topical and salient. The U.S. military and its coalition partners, including Britain, are prosecuting counterinsurgency campaigns in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines, the Horn of Africa, and elsewhere. An analysis of British military cultural predilections in the context of counterinsurgency is therefore germane because the U.S. Army is transforming while in contact, and a big part of Transformation is about military cultural change. If U.S. military culture has traditionally exhibited a preference for a big, conventional-war paradigm, and if this preference has impeded its capacity to adapt to small wars and counterinsurgencies, then there might be something to gain or learn from examining the cultural characteristics of another army with a greater propensity for counterinsurgency. In short, military culture comprises the beliefs and attitudes within a military organization that shape its collective preferences toward the use of force. These attitudes can impede or foster innovation and adaptation. Military culture sometimes exhibits preferences for either small wars or big wars. (2) On Small Wars, Asymmetric Conflict, and Counterinsurgency That great powers can lose small wars when their opponents refuse to fight them conventionally seems axiomatic. How then do they adapt to successfully fight counterinsurgencies and small wars? Small wars are not force-on-force, state-on-state conventional wars in which success is measurable by phase lines crossed or hills seized. Asymmetric conflict, with its associated contradictions, is not a new concept either; it dates at least as far back as the Roman occupation of Spain, but the U.S. experience in Vietnam was the genesis for the first use of the term. Asymmetric conflict usually sees an ostensibly superior external military force confronting an ostensibly inferior state or indigenous group on the latter's territory. Counterinsurgencies and small wars are subsumed within this category, and I use these terms interchangeably in this article. (3) Asymmetry "in means" occasions insurgency and the use of hit-and-run small-unit tactics by irregular and paramilitary elements to harass, ambush, bomb, and disrupt outposts, checkpoints, or conventional formations' lines of communication. Practitioners of insurgency concentrate limited attacks against the critical vulnerabilities of regular military forces by using instrumental perfidy to undermine the overmatch of technology and the aggregate forces of their adversaries. The Battle of Omdurman in 1898 saw both the culmination and the apotheosis of Britain's 19th-century style of colonial warfare. This battle in the Sudan witnessed a British rout of the Mahdi's indigenous army, which fought the British European-style and "fled in utter rout, pursued by the Egyptian cavalry, harried by the 21st Lancers, and leaving more than 9,700 warriors dead and even greater numbers wounded behind them." (4) The British lost only 48 men. About the Battle of Omdurman, Mao Tse-tung observed that defeat is the inevitable result when native forces fight against modernized forces on their terms. (5) The 20th century witnessed indigenous forces adopting Fabian/Maoist strategies fueled by nationalist and communist ideologies that challenged the colonial powers' superior numbers and technology. …

Abstract:In the present work, we have investigated the two-center three-electron (2c–3e) bond in X –NH ( ) complex using quantum chemical calculations. It was found that ammonia can form two types of the complex with halogen radical through the 2c–3e bond, one when halogen interacts with ammonia from the opposite side of hydrogen (RC1), and the other from the adjacent side of hydrogen (RC2). Further, it was found that RC1 and RC2 are connected to each other via ammonia inversion mode. However, compared to ammonia inversion, which is a symmetric double-well potential, here one stationary point (RC2) is close to TS, whereas the other (RC2) is far from the TS. Further, the energy barrier for the conversion of RC1 to RC2 in X –NH complexes are found to be lower than the barrier associated with ammonia inversion in bare NH molecule. Interestingly, the inter-conversion dynamics of RC1 and RC2 investigated via Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulation suggests that it can be an example of Polanyi's mode selective rules for an extreme late and early barrier reaction system, and can play a crucial role in explaining various peculiar dynamical effects found in chemical systems.

Abstract:Intramolecular N-H…X (X = F, Cl, Br, and I) hydrogen bonding patterns of aromatic amides in the solid state are summarized. It is revealed that the key for the formation of this kind of weak intramolecular hydrogen bonding in X-ray crystal structures is to suppress the competition of strong intermolecular N-H…O-C hydrogen bonding of the amide unit. For amides with identical backbones, the bonding capacity of halogen atoms as hydrogen bonding acceptors is in the order of F>Cl>Br>I, which is in accordance with their electronegativity strength. Generally, the five-membered hydrogen bonding is easier to form than the six-membered one.
Challenges and Motivating Factors Related to Positive Airway Pressure Therapy for Post-TIA and Stroke Patients

Abstract:Challenges adapting to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy are largely unexplored in patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack. This study, nested within a randomized controlled trial of CPAP use, employed qualitative methods to explore challenges and motivators related to CPAP at two time points: prior to initiating therapy and at a 1-month follow up. Emergent thematic analysis, an inductive, qualitative approach, revealed variations in how patients experienced and adapted to CPAP across five phases: (a) interpreting the sleep apnea diagnosis, (b) contemplating CPAP therapy, (c) trying CPAP therapy, (d) making mid-course adjustments, and (e) experiencing benefits from CPAP therapy. Patients all had mild to moderate sleep apnea, and frequently did not experience sleep apnea symptoms. A salient motivator for adhering to CPAP therapy for these patients was the desire to reduce the risk of subsequent cerebrovascular events. Self-determination theory guided the interpretation of results.
Hydrogen Bond Networks Formed by Several Dozens to Hundreds of Molecules in the Gas Phase

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopy was applied to neutral and protonated clusters of fundamental protic molecules, water, methanol (MeOH), and ammonia, in the size range of dozens to hundreds. For neutral (H2O)n and (MeOH)n clusters, a phenol molecule was introduced as a chromophore for the resonant multiphoton ionization detection, and the infrared-ultraviolet double-resonance scheme with mass spectrometry was used to perform moderately size-selective infrared spectroscopy in the OH stretch region. Infrared spectra of neutral (NH3)n clusters in the NH stretch region were also measured with the same scheme, but without addition of a chromophore. For protonated clusters, H+(H2O)n, H+(MeOH)n, and H+(NH3)n, infrared dissociation spectroscopy was applied to observe definitely size-selective spectra of these clusters in the large size region. The size dependence of the hydrogen bond networks of the neutral and protonated clusters is discussed on the basis of the observed spectra. Convergence of the spectra of the protonated clusters to those of the neutral clusters is seen with increasing size, and the convergence size tells us the maximum size range of the influence of the excess proton to the surrounding hydrogen bond network. Convergence of the spectra of large-sized clusters to those of the bulk is also seen, and the dependence of the convergence size on the hydrogen bond network is discussed.

Abstract:This paper addresses the stability of the intramolecular five- and six-membered N—H···X (X = Cl, Br, and I) hydrogen bonds in aromatic amides. The crystal structures of 11 chloro-, bromo-, or iodo-substituted aromatic amides are reported. It is revealed that five-membered N—H···X hydrogen bonding occurs for all the halogen atoms in the designed compounds. Introduction of a large aryl or alkyl unit increases the stability of the hydrogen bonding because its existence weakens the competitive intermolecular N—H···O═C hydrogen bonding. A stable six-membered N—H···Cl hydrogen bond is also exhibited in the crystal structure of N-triphenylmethyl 2-chlorobenzamide. However, its bromo- and iodo-substituted counterparts display only intermolecular N—H···O═C hydrogen bonding. 1H NMR experiments in CDCl3 for 18 halogenated isomeric N -phenyl benzamides indicate that in solution five-membered N—H···X (X = Cl, Br, and I) hydrogen bonds can also be formed, but no evidence for the existence of the six-membered one is observed. The results show that the five-membered N—H···X (X = Cl, Br, and I) hydrogen bond is generally more stable than its corresponding six-membered counterpart.

Abstract:This Letter reports the evidences for intramolecular six-membered N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonding in N-benzyl benzamides and five-membered N-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding in N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) benzamide. Intramolecular six-membered N-H center dot center dot center dot X (X = O or F) hydrogen bonding in 2-methoxyl- or 2-fluorobenzamides is used to lock the amide proton from forming strong intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O=C hydrogen bonding. As a result, for the first time the new intramolecular hydrogen bonding patterns are observed in the crystal structures of nine amides, whereas the whole molecules give rise to a new class of three-center hydrogen bonding motif. H-1 NMR Study in chloroform-d also supports that this weak intramolecular hydrogen bonding pattern exists in solution. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
