Abstract:Abstract Local nature of the boron-nitrogen (BN) bonding with different formal multiplicities (B≡N, B=N, B-N) have been investigated for 25 experimentally established organoboron molecules in both real and the Hilbert space, using topological analysis of electron localization function (ELF), electron density (AIM), and natural bond orbital (NBO) method. Each BN bond has been represented (ELF) by the bonding disynaptic attractor V(B,N), with the basin electron population between 5.72e and 1.83e, confirming possible existence of all the three bond types. A covalent character of bonding can be associated with the dative mechanism due to the V(B,N) bonding basin formed mainly (91–96%) by the N electron density. Similarly, the NBO method shows 2-center natural orbitals, consisting largely of the hybrids from the N atom. The AIM analysis yields the features typical for shared (H (3,−1) ( r ) < 0) and closed-shell (∇ 2 ρ (3,−1) ( r ) > 0) interactions. The delocalization indices, describing electron exchanges between B and N quantum atoms, are smaller than 1.5, even for formally very short triple B≡N bonds.

Abstract:Dihydrogen bond (DHB) interaction that exists in ammoniated metal borohydride systems is recognized as an effective intermediate step involved in the evolution of H 2 molecules. Mechanism of DHB formation and its electronic properties upon halogenations were explored for Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 ⋯M(BH 3 X) (where M = Li, Na, K, and X = H, F, Cl, and Br) systems using ab initio (MP2) and DFT (ωB97XD) calculations. The influence of halogens in varying the nature of the DHB that forms in Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 ⋯M(BH 3 X) complexes was explored with the Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecule (QTAIM) analysis. Further, Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) was made to understand the strength of DHB interaction through the calculation of the E disp term in interaction energy. The results obtained from EDA and QTAIM were found to correlate well with the structural parameter and the interaction energy values. This study reveals the influence of halogenations on tuning the electronic properties of DHB interaction in all the complexes. Our results suggest that the effective substitution of halogens in BH 4 molecule enhances DHB interaction, and the impact of halogenations on DHB has been revealed through QTAIM, EDA, Natural Bond Order (NBO), Non-covalent Interaction (NCI), and Bader charge analyses.

Abstract:Ammonia borane(BH3NH3) is a promising hydrogen storage material because of its high gravimetric (19.6 wt% H2) and volumetric hydrogen density with an accompanying moderate decomposition temperature. Previously reported structures determined by using x-ray and neutron diffraction on hydrides show differences in bond lengths and atomic coordination. Here, the crystal structures of fully and half deuterated ammonia borane were investigated as a function of temperature using powder neutron diffraction. The neutron diffraction patterns show a significant difference due to large difference in the scattering length of D and H. It is evident that an order-disorder phase transition occurs around 225 K for all compounds. At low temperature, the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure with space group Pnm21 and gradually transforms to a high temperature disordered tetragonal structure with space group I/4mm at about 225K. The differential scanning calorimetry studies confirm this phase transformation and also indicate that all compounds melt and decompose at above 370 K. The c cell parameter remains unchanged in the orthorhombic phase from 16 K to 200K and increases liaa nearly above 225K. As the temperature is increased, the BH3-NH3 groups start to reorient along the c axis, and the D/H atoms become disordered, leading to the tetragonal phase transition around 225K.

Abstract:A non-classical mechanism of binding in diborane (B2 H6) is derived quantum-mechanically (B3LYP/6-311++G**) using a dual-space analysis. High-resolution binding-energy spectra of diborane, generated using an outer-valence Green’s-function and density-functional theory with a statistical average of model orbital potentials (SAOP), agree satisfactorily with experiment. Electron-correlation energies of diborane produce orbital-based variations in ionization energy in the valence space, but with negligible impact on the shape of only ag symmetry orbitals as indicated in momentum space. The present work indicates quantitatively that (a) the pair of three-centre banana-shaped BHbB bonds are more accurately described as one diamond-shaped bond with BHbBHb, (b) all bonds in diborane are electron-deficient including the four equivalent BHt bonds, (c) there is no pure BB bond but contributions from all valence orbitals form an unconventional electron-deficient BB bond, and (d) only two innermost valence orbitals – 2ag and 2b1u – are sp2-hybridized and no evidence indicates other valence orbitals of diborane to be hybridized.

Abstract:The chemical structure of diborane was elucidated through the superposition of the vector fields of the electron density gradient ∇ρ(r), the electrostatic force Fes(r), and the kinetic force Fk(r), together with the analysis of the cumulative charges of the atoms and pseudoatoms delimited in the aforementioned fields. It was proposed that the Fk-pseudoatomic charge could be employed as a metric for quantifying the ionic component of a related atomic charge. The electron permeability across an internuclear turning surface─specifically, the zero-flux surface in Fk(r)─was characterized by probing it through mapping the total static potential φem(r). The conceptualization of post hoc electronegativity was presented for consideration. Our analysis revealed that the ordinary B-H and bent B-μ-H bonds in diborane demonstrate the polar covalent character with minor contributions of the ionic component. The former bond exhibits a greater electron permeability through the internuclear turning surface, indicating a stronger tendency for electron sharing between the corresponding nucleus-dominated regions. The electron density accumulation along the bent B-μ-H bond path diverges from the minimum action trajectories of the forces Fes(r) and Fk(r). This phenomenon can be associated with the structural strain within the angled, three-center two-electron bonding B-μ-H-B. The internuclear B···B paths were identified in Fes(r) and Fk(r), in contrast to ∇ρ(r). This fact, in conjunction with a pronounced electron permeability through the mutual turning surface between the two boron nuclei, implies a certain degree of electron exchange between the boron-dominated pseudoatomic regions. Furthermore, the anomalous [B-]H···μ-H intermolecular polar interactions were described between the strongly negatively charged hydrogen atoms in the monoclinic crystalline β-phase of diborane. In fact, the ionic contributions to the charges of the hydrogen atoms are shown to be relatively small.

Abstract:We have studied the crystal structure of fully deuterated BH3NH3 using powder neutron diffraction at different temperatures. It is evident that an order-disorder phase transition occurs around 225K. At low temperature, the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure with space group Pnm21 and gradually transforms to a high temperature tetragonal structure with space group I4mm above 225K. At 16K, the BD3–ND3 unit stacks along the c axis with a tilt angle of about 16° between the N–B bond and the c axis. As the temperature is increased, the BD3–ND3 groups start to reorient along the c axis and the deuterium atoms become disordered, leading to the tetragonal phase transition.

Abstract:The reactivity of NH(2)BH(2) in the presence of ammonia-borane (AB) is investigated using ab initio CCSD(T) simulations to answer the following three questions: How do AB and NH(2)BH(2) react? How do aminoborane species oligomerize apart from catalytic centers? Can the formation of experimentally observed products, especially cyclic N(2)B(2)H(7)-NH(2)BH(3), be explained through the kinetics of NH(2)BH(2) oligomerization in the presence of AB? AB is shown to react with NH(2)BH(2) by the addition of NH(3)-BH(3) across the N=B double bond, generating linear NH(3)BH(2)NH(2)BH(3). This species decomposes by surmounting a reasonable barrier to produce two NH(2)BH(2) and H(2). The generation of additional NH(2)BH(2) from NH(2)BH(2) and AB provides a pathway for autocatalytic NH(2)BH(2) production. The important intermediates along the oligomerization pathway include cyclic (NH(2)BH(2))(2) and linear NH(3)BH(2)NH(2)BH(3), both of which have been observed experimentally. Calculations show cyclic N(2)B(2)H(7)-NH(2)BH(3), an aminoborane analogue of ethylcyclobutane, to be the kinetically preferred stable intermediate resulting from oligomerization of free NH(2)BH(2) over its isomers, cyclic B(2)N(2)H(7)-BH(2)NH(3) and cyclotriborazane, cyclic (NH(2)BH(2))(3). Simulations show cyclotriborazane formation to be kinetically slower than cyclic B(2)N(2)H(7)-NH(2)BH(3) formation and imply that formation of the cyclic species cyclotriborazane and cyclopentaborazane may be catalyzed by binding of NH(2)BH(2) to a catalytic metal center. Routes that may lead to larger noncyclic oligomers are suggested to be kinetically competitive. The highly reactive N=B double bonds of NH(2)BH(2) are shown to be of central importance in understanding aminoborane oligomerization.

Abstract:The effect that borane and diborane have on the structure and acidity of various N-bases was analyzed using G4 ab-initio calculations. Although diborane is expected to be a stronger Lewis acid than borane, its interaction with N-bases is weaker due to the loss of one of its (3c,2e) bonds. Surprisingly, however, diborane has a significantly greater effect on the intrinsic acidity of these bases than borane. Upon deprotonation of the base, the interaction strength increases by a factor of 10 with diborane and only 3 with borane, as both the B–N and B···B interactions are reinforced in diborane.

Abstract:In this work, we report a detailed theoretical investigation of the phase transition of ammonia borane (NH(3) BH(3); AB), from a tetragonal I4mm (C(4v)(9)) phase with disordered orientation of hydrogen to an orthorhombic phase with Pmn2(1) (C(2v)(7)) symmetry, as a function of temperature based on Density Functional Theory calculations with semiempirical dispersion potential correction. We define a series of substructures with the NH(3) BH(3) moiety always in C(3v) symmetry and the partially occupied high temperature state can be described as a continuous transformation between these substructures. To understand the role of the van der Waals corrections to the physical properties, we use the empirical Grimme's dispersion potential correction (PBE-D2). Both Perdew-Burke-Emzerhof (PBE) and PBE-D2 functional yield almost the same energy sequence along the transition path. However, PBE-D2 functional shows obvious advantage in describing the lattice parameters of AB. The rigid rotor harmonic oscillator approximation is used to compute the free energy and the entropies contribution along the transition pathway. With knowledge of free energy surfaces along rotations of the --[NH(3)] and --[BH(3)] groups, complete transformation paths are mapped out. The phase transition is found to follow the sequence of partially occupied tetragonal system (I4mm) of a mixture of states with monoclinic (Cc), (CM) and orthorhombic (Pmn2(1)) symmetries to fully occupied quasitetragonal system (the intermediate phase, Pmn2(1)) to fully occupied orthorhombic system (Pmn2(1)).

Abstract:Structural evolution of a prospective hydrogen storage material, ammonia borane NH3BH3, has been studied at high pressures up to 12 GPa and at low temperatures by synchrotron powder diffraction. At 293 K and above 1.1 GPa a disordered I4mm structure reversibly transforms into a new ordered phase. Its Cmc21 structure was solved from the diffraction data, the positions of N and B atoms and the orientation of NH3 and BH3 groups were finally assigned with the help of density functional theory calculations. Group-theoretical analysis identifies a single two-component order parameter, combining ordering and atomic displacement mechanisms, which link an orientationally disordered parent phase I4mm with ordered distorted Cmc21, Pmn21 and P21 structures. We propose a generic phase diagram for NH3BH3, mapping three experimentally found and one predicted (P21) phases as a function of temperature and pressure, along with the evolution of the corresponding structural distortions. Ammonia borane belongs to the class of improper ferroelastics and we show that both temperature- and pressure-induced phase transitions can be driven to be of the second order. The role of N-H...H-B dihydrogen bonds and other intermolecular interactions in the stability of NH3BH3 polymorphs is examined.
Sublimation and thermal decomposition of ammonia borane: Competitive processes controlled by pressure

Abstract:Thermal behavior of ammonia borane BH3NH3 (AB) has been studied by calorimetry, tensimetry and mass spectrometry methods. It is shown, that depending on vapor pressure in the system two competitive processes are taking place at 357K. At atmospheric pressure thermal decomposition with hydrogen evolution is the dominant process: BH3NH3(s) =1/n (BH2NH2) n(s) +H2(g) (1). At low pressures (circa 4mTorr) the major process is endothermic sublimation of AB: BH3NH3(s) =BH3NH3(g) (2). At intermediate pressures both processes occur simultaneously. Enthalpies for the processes (1) and (2) have been determined by drop-calorimetry method: Δ(1) H 357°=−24.8±2.3kJmol−1 and Δsub H 357°(BH3NH3)=76.3±3.0kJmol−1. Solid products after sublimation and decomposition have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy; gaseous forms were studied by mass spectrometry. Activation energy of 94±11kJmol−1 for the process (1) in range 327–351K was determined by static tensimetry method. Based on the analysis of available thermodynamic characteristics, new values for the standard formation enthalpy of solid AB −133.4±5.2kJmol−1 and polyamidoborane −156.7±5.8kJmol−1 are recommended.

The onset of dehydrogenation in solid Ammonia Borane, an ab-initio metadynamics study

Abstract:The discovery of effective hydrogen storage materials is fundamental for the progress of a clean energy economy. Ammonia borane ($\mathrm{H_3BNH_3}$) has attracted great interest as a promising candidate but the reaction path that leads from its solid phase to hydrogen release is not yet fully understood. To address the need for insights in the atomistic details of such a complex solid state process, in this work we use \textit{ab-initio} molecular dynamics and metadynamics to study the early stages of AB dehydrogenation. We show that the formation of ammonia diborane ($\mathrm{H_3NBH_2(}$$\mu$$\mathrm{-H)BH_3}$) leads to the release of $\mathrm{NH_4^+}$, which in turn triggers an autocatalytic $\mathrm{H_2}$ production cycle. Our calculations provide a model for how complex solid state reactions can be theoretically investigated and rely upon the presence of multiple ammonia borane molecules, as substantiated by standard quantum-mechanical simulations on a cluster.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of various computational methods in reproducing the experimental heats of formation of boron hydrides using the atomization energy ap- proach. The results have demonstrated that the empirical dispersion combined with the BJ damping function provided too large intramolecular dispersion energies, thereby compromising the accuracy of the outcomes produced by the DFT-D3 methods. Additionally, the CCSD(T) method has reproduced the experimental values only when combined with a basis set optimized for an accurate description of the core-valence correlation effect. Furthermore, the number of multicenter bonds present in the molecules under examination has also reflected their stability, as indicated by the heats of formation. Finally, a five-center two-electron (5c-2e) bond has emerged in B5H9, by applying the Intrinsic Bond Orbital (IBO) method.

Abstract:The H(NH(2)BH(2))(n)H oligomers are possible products from dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (NH(3)BH(3)) and ammonium borohydride (NH(4)BH(4)), which belong to a class of boron-nitrogen-hydrogen (BNH(x)) compounds that are promising materials for chemical hydrogen storage. Understanding the kinetics and reaction pathways of formation of these oligomers and their further dehydrogenation is essential for developing BNH(x)-based hydrogen storage materials. We have performed computational modeling using density functional theory (DFT), ab initio wave function theory, and Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations on the energetics and formation pathways for the H(NH(2)BH(2))(n)H (n = 1-4) oligomers, polyaminoborane (PAB), from NH(3)BH(3) monomers and the subsequent dehydrogenation steps to form polyiminoborane (PIB). Through computational transition state searches and evaluation of the intrinsic reaction coordinates, we have investigated the B-N bond cleavage, the reactions of NH(3)BH(3) molecule with intermediates, dihydrogen release through intra- and intermolecular hydrogen transfer, dehydrocoupling/cyclization of the oligomers, and the dimerization of NH(3)BH(3) molecules. We find that the formation of H(NH(2)BH(2))(n+1)H oligomers occurs first through reactions of the H(NH(2)BH(2))(n)H oligomers with BH(3) followed by reactions with NH(3) and the release of H(2), where the BH(3) and NH(3) intermediates are formed through dissociation of NH(3)BH(3). We also find that the dimerization of the NH(3)BH(3) molecules to form cyclic c-(NH(2)BH(2))(2) is slightly exothermic, with an unexpected transition state that leads to the simultaneous release of two H(2) molecules. The dehydrogenations of the oligomers are also exothermic, typically by less than 10 kcal/(mol of H(2)), with the largest exothermicity for n = 3. The transition state search shows that the one-step direct dehydrocoupling cyclization of the oligomers is not a favored pathway because of high activation barriers. The dihydrogen bonding, in which protic (H(N)) hydrogens interact with hydridic (H(B)) hydrogens, plays a vital role in stabilizing different structures of the reactants, transition states, and products. The dihydrogen interaction (DHI) within the R-BH(2)(eta(2)-H(2)) moiety accounts for both the formation mechanisms of the oligomers and for the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane.

Abstract:Boron-nitrogen-hydrogen (BNHx) materials are polar analogues of hydrocarbons with potential applications as media for hydrogen storage. As H(NH2BH2)),H oligomers result from dehydrogenation of NH3BH3 and NH4BH4 materials, understanding the geometries, stabilities, and electronic structure of these oligomers is essential for developing chemical methods of hydrogen release and regeneration of the BNRx-based hydrogen storage materials. In this work we have performed computational modeling on the H(NH2BH2)(n)H (n = 1-6) oligomers using density functional theory (DFT). We have investigated linear chain structures and the stabilizing effects of coiling, biradicalization, and branching through Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations and subsequent geometry optimizations. We find that the zigzag linear oligomers are unstable with respect to the coiled, square-wave chain, and branched structures, with the coiled structures being the most stable. Dilrydrogen bonding in oligomers, where protic H delta+(N) hydrogens interact with hydridic H delta-(B) hydrogens, plays a crucial role in stabilizing different isomers and conformers. The results are consistent with structures of products that are seen in experimental NMR studies of dehydrogenated ammonia borane.
A First-Principles Simulation of the Metal Borohydride Ammonia Borane Complex (libh4)2(nh3bh3) and the Decomposition Reaction Pathway for Hydrogen Storage

Abstract:In this work, we predict a range of favorable functional properties of (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3, a relatively new member of the boron-containing metal borohydride ammonia borane family, by means of ab initio calculations, as well as its parent compounds, LiBH4 and NH3BH3, for comparisons. Both the mechanical and dynamical stabilities of this new compound have been demonstrated theoretically for the first time. Results from elastic modulus calculations show that the mechanical properties of (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3 are remarkably improved compared with its parent compounds. Secondly, Electronic structure results show that it remains to an insulator with large band gap typical of the boron containing hydrogenous family, but the band gap can be tuned by the compositions of NH3BH3 and LiBH4. Charge analysis demonstrates that charge transfers in individual layers of LiBH4 and NH3BH3 are similar to LiBH4 and NH3BH3, respectively. A measurable amount of charge transfers from the LiBH4 layers to the NH3BH3 layers result in enhanced activation properties for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in (LiBH4)(2)NH3BH3. Thirdly, Free energies of six possible dehydrogenation reactions have been calculated from 0 K to 700 K, and the results show that combination of NH3BH3 and LiBH4 can reduce the dehydrogenation energies compared with the parent compounds, a result consistent with recent experiments. Meanwhile, the N-B bond strengths increase and thereby borazine and diborane formation are reduced upon dehydrogenation. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. In situ X-ray study of ammonia borane at high pressures

Abstract:In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments of ammonia borane synthesized using sonication assisted direct reaction (sodium borohydride and ammonium formate) were performed under high pressures up to 23 GPa at ambient temperature and up to 4 GPa at elevated temperatures (300 K–505 K). At ambient temperature, one first order phase transition (I4mm to Cmc21) was observed at 1.3 GPa and one second order phase transition was observed at about 5 GPa. Fitting the measured volumetric compression data to the third order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state reveals a bulk modulus of K = 9.3 ± 0.4 GPa (K′ = 4.8) for the I4mm phase, K = 11.9 ± 0.5 GPa (K′ = 4.6) for the Cmc21 phase below 5 GPa, and K = 37 ± 4 GPa (K′ = 4.6) for pressure above 5 GPa. There is a 6% volume drop at the first order phase transition. Transition pressures from I4mm to Cmc21 phases were determined at elevated temperatures. The phase boundary has a negative Clapeyron slope of −1.67 MPa/K. The experiments also reveal a new structural transition when temperature increases to 450 K at 4 GPa.
Dynamic Mechanisms for Ammonia Borane Thermolysis in Solvent: Deviation from Gas-Phase Minimum-Energy Pathways

Abstract:The dynamic mechanisms involved in the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane are investigated using quasi-classical trajectory simulations. The effects of solvent and nuclear motion yield qualitatively different results compared to simulations where these considerations are neglected. Not only are rate-limited barriers substantially different from the gas to solvent phase, trajectories leading from transition states branch to different products depending on the presence or lack of solvent. In addition the formation of the diammoniate of diborane is shown to be noncompetitive in the gas phase due to the presence of lower-barrier dehydrogenation pathway. The first comparative analysis of the pathways leading to the thermolysis of ammonia-borane is presented herein.
