Abstract:This study investigated the removal of methylene blue and methyl orange dyes from aqueous solutions containing these dyes. The process of wastewater treatment involved a combination of adsorption processes performed using UV/H2O2/TiO2 and fly‐ash adsorbent prepared from sunflower seed pulp. In this study, first the effect of UV/H2O2/TiO2 process parameters including initial dye concentration (10‐30 mg/L), UV lamp power (0‐30 W), hydrogen peroxide concentration (100‐500 mg/L), and titanium dioxide concentration (10‐50 mg/L) were investigated (under a process time of 75 min and adsorbent concentration of 2 g/L). In optimal conditions, the percentage of removal of methylene blue and methyl orange dyes were 96.43% and 83.60%, respectively. After the optimization of the parameters of UV/H2O2/TiO2 process, the processing time and adsorbent concentration were investigated. The results indicated that when performing the process under the process time of 150 min and the adsorbent concentration of 2 g/L, the removal of methylene blue dye exceeded 99%. In addition, the removal of methyl orange dye under the process time of 300 min and the adsorbent concentration of 10 g/L exceeded 99%. At the end of the study, an assessment was carried out using quasi‐first‐order and quasi‐second‐order kinetic models and the results indicated that both kinetic models had a high level of accuracy for modeling the adsorption of methylene blue and methyl orange dyes on fly‐ash adsorbents prepared from sunflower seed pulp. Abstract:Combined electrocoagulation (EC) and homogeneous phase TiO2 photo-assisted system were applied to methyl orange (MO) wastewater treatment. Optimum including current density, initial concentration of MO, TiO2 concentration, pH, solution conductivity and electrode distance were investigated. 98% decolorization (initial concentration = 500 mg/L) was achieved in 30 min with a current density of 125 A/m(2), electrode distance of 2.5 cm, electrolyte KCl concentration of 0.5 g/L, initial pH of 6.86, and TiO2 concentration of 100 mg/L. Compared with individual EC and TiO2/UV systems, the combined treatment system of EC-TiO2/UV enhanced the MO decoloration efficiency (80% removal in 20 min). The energy consumption of EC-TiO2/UV process for MO removal was about 214 kWh/(kgdye). In this paper, the EC-UV/TiO2 combined system has been proved to be an efficient technology for MO containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Fenton oxidation is an advanced treatment process for printing and dyeing wastewater. The process conditions（pH value, the dosage of ferrous sulfate, the dosage of hydrogen peroxide, reaction time, etc.） of Fenton oxidation were used to optimize for the treatment of dyeing wastewater,and the cost was calculated for optimization. The results showed that under the process conditions of pH=3.5, ferrous sulfate dosage of 0.15 g/L, 30%hydrogen peroxide dosage of 0.26 ml/L, 30% sodium hydroxide dosage of 0.24 ml/L, and PAM dosage of 1 mg/L, the effluent CODcr average value was 22.8 mg/L, the COD removal rate was 67.5%, and the lowest reagent cost was 0.98 yuan/m~3.

Abstract:Metals-loaded (Fe 3+ , Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ) activated carbons (M@AC) with different loading ratios (0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 5% and 10%) were prepared and employed for catalytic degradation of dye model compounds (crystal violet (CV) and methyl orange (MO)) in wastewater by heterogeneous Fenton-like technique. Compared with Cu@AC and Zn@AC, 0.5% Fe 3+ loaded AC (0.5Fe@AC) had better catalytic activity for dyes degradation. The effects of dyes initial concentration, catalyst dosage, pH and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) volume on the catalytic degradation process were investigated. Cyclic performance, stability of 0.5Fe@AC and iron leaching were explored. Degradation kinetics were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order model (Langmuir-Hinshelwood). Almost complete decolorization (99.7%) of 400 mg L −1 CV was achieved after 30 min reaction under the conditions of CV volume (30 mL), catalyst dosage (0.05 g), H 2 O 2 volume (1 mL) and pH (7.7). Decolorization of MO reached 98.2% under the same conditions. The abilities of pyrolysis char (PC) of dyeing sludge (DS) and metal loaded carbon to remove dye pollutants were compared. The intermediate products were analyzed and the possible degradation pathway was proposed. This study provided an insight into catalytic degradation of triphenylmethane- and aromatic azo-based substances, and utilization of sludge char.

Abstract:Large amounts of diverse colored synthetic organic dyes are discharged from industrial effluents in the environment causing non-esthetic pollution and serious health-risk problems. Dyes are very stable upon solar irradiation, temperature, and biological treatment, then being non-removed in conventional wastewater treatment plants. The decontamination of dyeing effluents by potent methods has received increasing attention over the last years, showing a marked relevance in the electrochemical Fenton-based processes consisting of H 2 O 2 electro-generation and its catalytic decomposition with Fe 2+ to form ∙ OH. This paper presents a comprehensive review of these processes in the period 2018–2022 dealing with the discoloration and mineralization of synthetic solutions and real wastewaters with single or mixed synthetic organic dyes. Homogeneous electro-Fenton (EF), heterogeneous EF with solid catalysts or functionalized cathodes, photoelectro-Fenton (PEF), microbial fuel cells, other hybrid processes with adsorption, nanofiltration, electro-peroxone, or photoelectrocatalysis, and sequential processes with electrocoagulation or sonication are summarized. The principles of methods are explained to understand the role of the oxidizing agents generated. The H 2 O 2 accumulation at pH 3.0 is described with cathodes of raw and modified carbonaceous materials as well as gas-diffusion electrodes, and the effect of the anode, the electrolyte composition, the applied current density or cathodic potential, and the Fe 2+ and dye contents on the homogeneous EF performance are discussed. Rapid discoloration and much slower mineralization were found by homogeneous EF. Similar behavior was obtained for heterogeneous EF, although allowed operating at a more neutral pH without sludge precipitation. The dye removal was more improved in PEF and solar PEF (SPEF) due to the positive photolysis of Fe(III) species by UVA light and sunlight, respectively. SPEF can be envisaged as the best and more cost-effective electrochemical Fenton-based treatment for dyes destruction.

Abstract:The performance of Cu/TiO2/FA composite, a hybrid adsorbent-photocatalyst consisting of copper-doped titania particles supported on fly ash, was optimized, under visible light irradiation, for the removal of the model dye pollutant methyl orange (MO) by using a response surface methodology and Box-Behnken experimental design. Three independent variables were considered for the optimization study: catalyst/solvent dosage (0.5 – 2.0 g/L), irradiation time (30–120 min), and the initial concentration (5– 25 ppm) of the dye. A 99.91% rate of removal was achieved using 2 g/L dosage, 5 ppm initial concentration, and 100 min of irradiation time as the optimal operating conditions. The recorded trends support the hypothesis of a combined and synergic adsorption-photocatalytic degradation process which fully exploits the "capture and destroy" approach for pollutant removal.

Abstract:In a batch reactor, the EF advanced oxidation decolorization of aqueous solutions of methyl orange MO, a commercial azo reactive textile dye, was investigated in the presence of two different electrodes. The evaluation included various operational variables such as the IC current intensity (60 mA, 80 mA, and 100 mA), initial concentration of pollutant MO (20 mg/L, 40 mg/L, and 60 mg/L), initial pH of solution (3, 5, and 7), temperature of solution (20 °C, 30 °C, and 50 °C), and initial concentration of catalyst [Fe2+] (0.1 mM, 0.2 mM, and 0.3 mM) on the discoloration rate. A Box-Behnken Design of Experiment (BBD) was used to optimize the parameters that directly affect the Electro-Fenton (EF) process. Under the optimal experimental conditions such as [Fe2+] = 0.232 mM, pH = 3, IC = 80 mA, [MO] = 60 mg/L, and T = 30 ± 0.1 °C, the maximum discoloration rate achieved was 94.9%. The discoloration of the aqueous MO solution during the treatment time was confirmed by analysis of the UV-visible spectrum. After a review of the literature on organic pollutant degradation, the EF system provided here is shown to be one of the best in terms of discoloration rate when compared to other AOPs.

Abstract:Background The efficient and green technology of dye removal has been widely investigated. In this study, bio‐electro‐Fenton system was used to degrade methyl orange (MO). For the system optimization, five experimental groups were detected, including pH (1–6), Fe2+ concentration (3–15 mM), airflow rate (0–20 mL/min), external voltages (0.2–1.0 V), and initial MO concentration (20–100 mg/L). Results pH 3, Fe2+ concentration of 9 mM, air flowrate of 12 mL/min, external voltage of 0.6 V and MO concentration of 60 mg/L were selected as the optimal conditions, resulting in the efficiency of 92%. For the pathway investigation of MO degradation, under the oxidization by •OH, demethylation, azo bond broken and benzene ring structure broken were obtained. Intermediate products were predicted. For the system evaluation, energy consumption of 1 m3 MO wastewater was 0.15–0.59 KWh. The total cost of degrading MO wastewater could decrease to 470.0 $/m3 by adjusting operational time. Conclusion Considering the Fe2+ regeneration and the little energy consumption, the bio‐electro‐Fenton system could be considered as one of the most environment‐friendly approaches for MO degradation, while, quantitative evaluation on sustainability needed to be further discussed via advanced assessment tools (such as life cycle assessment). Removal of COD and Color from Textile Wastewater by the Fenton and UV/H2O2 Oxidation Processes and Optimization

Abstract:Textile industry wastewaters are complex and hazardous because of the variety of dyestuffs and chemicals used in the textile fiber dyeing and finishing processes. Individual wastewater treatment through physical, biological, or chemical methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. Advanced oxidation processes are considered one of the most attractive methods for treating water and wastewater containing toxic and non-biodegradable pollutants. In this study, color and COD removal efficiencies were investigated using advanced oxidation methods Fenton (Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 ) and ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2 ) processes. The optimum values of operational parameters that affect the Fenton and UV/H 2 O 2 treatment of wastewater were determined, such as iron dosage, hydrogen peroxide dosage, process time, and pH. The optimum conditions for the Fenton process were determined as H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ concentrations of 1 mg L −1 , process time of 30 min, and pH < 3.5. Under these conditions, removal efficiencies of 87.9%, 96.4%, and 98.4% were obtained for COD, color, and turbidity, respectively. In the UV/H 2 O 2 process, optimum conditions were determined as 30 min of processing time, 1 mg L −1 H 2 O 2 concentration, and pH = 3.5 value. Under these conditions, removal efficiencies of 86.7% and 96.5% were obtained for COD and color. The obtained experimental results were also modeled with the nonlinear regression method. When the results were evaluated, it was determined that advanced oxidation methods were very effective in removing color and COD from textile industry wastewater. In addition, based on the finding, the model presented can be used to predict the COD and color removal based on the dependent variables such as Fe 2+ , pH, time, and H 2 0 2 concentration.

Abstract:It is well known that water treatment of printing and dyeing wastewaters is problematic. In order to decompose dyes from dyestuff wastewater and convert them into almost harmless substances for the natural environment, an easily prepared, efficient, practical, and easy-to-regenerate composite material was produced from porous floating ceramsite loaded with cuprous oxide (PFCC). The PFCC samples were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The material was applied for photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in water. The results show that the maximal degradation rate of MO was 92.05% when the experimental conditions were as follows: cuprous oxide loading rate of 8%, PFCC dosage of 20 g/L, the reaction time of 2 h, pH value of 8, and solution initial concentration of 30 mg/L. The degradation processes of MO fits well with the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model in reaction kinetics, and the Freundlich model in reaction thermodynamics, respectively. The degradation mechanism of MO was considered from two perspectives—one was the synergetic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation, and the other was the strong oxidation of hydroxyl radicals produced by photocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract The Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are promising environmentally friendly technologies for the treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants in general and particularly dyes. The aim of this work is to determine which of the AOP processes based on the Fenton reaction is more effective in degrading the methyl orange (MO) dye. The comparative study of the Fenton, photo-Fenton (PF) and electro-Fenton (EF) processes has shown that electro-Fenton is the most efficient method for oxidizing Methyl Orange. The evolution of organic matter degradation was followed by absorbance (discoloration) and COD (mineralization) measurements. The kinetics of the MO degradation by the electro-Fenton process is very rapid and the OM degradation rate reached 90.87% after 5 min. The influence of some parameters such as the concentration of the catalyst (Fe (II)), the concentration of MO, the current density, the nature and the concentration of supporting electrolyte was investigated. The results showed that the degradation rate increases with the increase in the applied current density and the concentration of the supporting electrolyte. The study of the concentration effect on the rate degradation revealed optimal values for the concentrations 2.10 −5 M and 75 mg L −1 of Fe (II) and MO respectively.

Abstract:Vector quantization (VQ) is an elementary technique for image compression. However, searching for the nearest codeword in a codebook is time-consuming. In this work, we propose an adaptive scheme "bit-mapped look-up table" (BLUT) which can prune codewords rapidly. This new scheme uses positional information to represent the geometric relation within codewords. Accordingly, the lookup procedure could refer the information to sift candidate codewords easily. This scheme might also cooperate with existing schemes to speed-up searching. Simulation results confirm this effectiveness.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes are often applied to a variety of refractory wastewater, but rarely is the electro-Fenton process combined with the activated persulfate process applied to printing and dyeing wastewaters. In this study, we have delicately designed a new advanced oxidation process for the degradation of persistent pollutants in wastewater. The zero-valent iron (ZVI) activated peroxymonosulfate process coupled with an electro-Fenton (EF-PMS) oxidation process is applied to treat methylene blue (MB) wastewater. Its main advantage is to generate more reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduce the cost of oxidants. Experimentally, it was found that the degradation rate of the MB by the EF-PMS process was significantly higher than that before the coupling, and the mineralization rate can reach 56.84% within 2 h. According to free radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, the main ROS in the EF-PMS process were identified as ̇OH, SO 4 ̇ − and 1 O 2 , where free radical oxidation played an important role in the removal of MB, accounting for 70.39% of the total removal efficiency. The mechanism of ROS generation and action in the EF-PMS process was investigated, and the pathway of MB degradation was determined by the identification of intermediates. The EF-PMS process was also effective in degrading MB in different water quality backgrounds as well as for process reuse. The removal efficiency of other organic compounds was also evaluated. The results indicate that the EF-PMS process has good potential for application.

Abstract:Remediation of water bodies contaminated by organic or inorganic pollution has attracted widespread attention, only a few research focused on the remediation of organic-inorganic combined water pollution. In this study, a novel sulfonated material (HMFA), modified from coal fly ash (CFA) through alkali fusion and hydrothermal methods, was synthesized for the simultaneous removal of Methylene blue (MB) and Cadmium (Cd(II)) from wastewater, achieving the waste-control-waste strategy. Characterization results showed that functional groups such as hydroxyl and sulfonic acid groups are favorable for adsorption. The environmental factors exerted influence on the adsorption, with the presence of competing ions producing the most significant inhibitory effect. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption amounts of MB and Cd(II) were 116.69 and 93.53 mg g -1 in single system and 100.23 and 85.49 mg g -1 in binary system, respectively. The results of model fitting showed that the removal of MB and Cd(II) by HMFA in single system was consistent with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Apart from electrostatic attraction, the primary adsorption mechanisms on HMFA include hydrogen bonding for MB, as well as ion exchange and complexation for Cd(II), quantitative calculations have been carried out. HMFA remained favorable recyclability, and had higher selectivity on MB in natural water bodies. In conclusion, as a low-cost and efficient adsorbent material, HMFA has great potential for dye and heavy metal pollution control, which can provide more reference and theoretical support for solid waste resource utilization and dye/heavy metal removal in wastewater.

Abstract:This work addresses the mineralization of the widely used Methyl Orange (MO) azo dye by technologies based on H2O2 electrogeneration at a 3D-like air-diffusion cathode. These include two Fe2+-catalyzed processes such as electro-Fenton (EF) and photoelectro-Fenton (PEF). Bulk electrolyses were performed in a recirculation flow plant, in which the Eco-Cell filter-press electrochemical reactor was connected in series with a UVA photoreactor. The former reactor was equipped with a Ti|Ir-Sn-Sb oxide plate anode alongside a 3D-like air-diffusion cathode made from graphite felt and hydrophobized carbon cloth, aimed at electrogenerating H2O2 on site. The influence of current density (j), volumetric flow rate (Q) and initial MO concentration was examined. The greatest oxidation power corresponded to PEF process. The best operation conditions to treat 30 mg L-1 of total organic carbon of MO in a 50 mM Na2SO4 solution by PEF were found at 0.50 mM Fe2+, pH 3.0, j = 20 mA cm-2 and Q = 2.0 L min-1, obtaining 100% and 94% of color and TOC removals at 30 and 240-300 min, respectively. This accounted for 35% of mineralization current efficiency and 0.12 kWh (g TOC)-1 of energy consumption at the end of the electrolysis. The oxidation power of EF and PEF was compared with that of anodic oxidation (AO), and the sequence obtained was: PEF > EF > AO. The dye was gradually degraded, yielding non-toxic short carboxylic acids, like maleic, fumaric, formic, oxalic and oxamic, whose Fe(III) complexes were rapidly photolyzed.
Removal enhancement of persistent basic fuchsin dye from wastewater using an eco-friendly, cost-effective Fenton process with sodium percarbonate and waste iron catalyst

Abstract:In this comprehensive investigation, we evaluate the efficacy of the Fenton process in degrading basic fuchsin (BF), a resistant dye. Our primary focus is on the utilization of readily available, environmentally benign, and cost-effective reagents for the degradation process. Furthermore, we delve into various operational parameters, including the quantity of sodium percarbonate (SPC), pH levels, and the dimensions of waste iron bars, to optimize the treatment efficiency. In the course of our research, we employed an initial SPC concentration of 0.5 mM, a pH level of 3, a waste iron bar measuring 3.5 cm in length and 0.4 cm in diameter, and a processing time of 10 min. Our findings reveal the successful elimination of the BF dye, even when subjected to treatment with diverse salts and surfactants under elevated temperatures and acidic conditions (pH below 3). This underscores the robustness of the Fenton process in purifying wastewater contaminated with dye compounds. The outcomes of our study not only demonstrate the efficiency of the Fenton process but highlight its adaptability to address dye contamination challenges across various industries. Critically, this research pioneers the application of waste iron bars as a source of iron in the Fenton reaction, introducing a novel, sustainable approach that enhances the environmental and economic viability of the process. This innovative use of recycled materials as catalysts represents a significant advancement in sustainable chemical engineering practices.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are eco-friendly, and promising technology for treating dye containing wastewater. This study focuses on investigating the removal of methyl orange (MO), an azo dye, from a synthetic wastewater through the use of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), both independently and in combination with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), as an external oxidant, as well as photocatalysis (PC) employing catalyst coated on glass fibers tissue (GFT). The examination of various operating parameters, including the pressure drop and the concentration of H 2 O 2 , was systematically conducted to optimize the degradation of MO. A per-pass degradation model was used to interpret and describe the experimental data. The data revealed that exclusive employment of HC using a vortex-based cavitation device at 1.5 bar pressure drop, resulted in a degradation exceeding 96 % after 100 passes, equivalent to 230 min of treatment (cavitation yield of 3.6 mg/kJ for HC), with a COD mineralization surpassing 12 %. The presence of a small amount of H 2 O 2 (0.01 %) significantly reduced the degradation time from 230 min to 36 min (16 passes), achieving a degradation of 99.8 % (cavitation yield of 6.77 mg/kJ for HC) with COD mineralization rate twice as much as HC alone, indicating a synergistic effect of 4.8. The degradation time was further reduced to 21 min by combining HC with PC using TiO 2 -coated glass fibers and H 2 O 2 , (cavitation yield of 11.83 mg/kJ for HC), resulting in an impressive synergistic effect of 9.2 and COD mineralization twice as high as the HC/H 2 O 2 system. The results demonstrate that HC based hybrid AOPs can be very effective for treating and mineralizing azo dyes in water.

Abstract:To improve the performance of actual textile dye wastewater treatment, an advanced treatment combining the Fenton and flocculation processes was developed. The parameters affecting decolorization in the Fenton-flocculation process, including initial pH, H2O2 dosage, Fe(2+)dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time, and flocculant dosage, were examined. With the optimal Fenton-flocculation condition parameters, more than 95% COD removal, 99% colour removal, and 99% turbidity removal were obtained. UV-visible spectra of raw water and supernatant were further obtained after the Fenton-flocculation process, and results demonstrated that the chromophoric groups and the conjugated system in the dye molecular structure were destroyed. All these results confirmed that the Fenton-flocculation process was a favourable and effective post-treatment method for actual textile dye wastewater.
