Abstract:The problem of finding minimizing geodesics for a manifold M with a sub-Riemannian structure is equivalent to the time optimal control of a driftless system on M with a bound on the control. We consider here a class of sub-Riemannian problems on the classical Lie groups G where the dynamical equations are of the form \dot x=\sum_j X_j(x) u_j and the X_j=X_j(x) are right invariant vector fields on G and u_j:=u_j(t) the controls. The vector fields X_j are assumed to belong to the P part of a Cartan K-P decomposition. These types of problems admit a group of symmetries K which act on G by conjugation. Under the assumption that the minimal isotropy group in K is discrete, we prove that we can reduce the problem to a Riemannian problem on the regular part of the associated quotient space G/K. On this part we define the corresponding quotient metric. For the special cases of the K-P decomposition of SU(n) of type AIII we prove that the assumption on the minimal isotropy group is verified. Moreover, under the assumption that the quotient space G/K with the given metric has negative curvature we prove that the cut locus has to belong to the singular part of G. As an example of applications of these techniques we characterize the cut locus for a problem on SU(2) of interest in the control of quantum systems.

Sub-Riemannian geometry on some step-two Carnot groups

Abstract: This paper is a continuation of the previous work of the first author. We characterize a class of step-two groups introduced in \cite{Li19}, saying GM-groups, via some basic sub-Riemannian geometric properties, including the squared Carnot-Carath\'{e}odory distance, the cut locus, the classical cut locus, the optimal synthesis, etc. Also, the shortest abnormal set can be exhibited easily in such situation. Some examples of such groups are step-two groups of corank $2$, of Kolmogorov type, or those associated to quadratic CR manifolds. As a byproduct, the main goal in \cite{BBG12} is achieved from the setting of step-two groups of corank $2$ to all possible step-two groups, via a completely different method. A partial answer to the open questions \cite[(29)-(30)]{BR19} is provided in this paper as well. Moreover, we provide a entirely different proof, based yet on \cite{Li19}, for the Gaveau-Brockett optimal control problem on the free step-two Carnot group with three generators. As a byproduct, we provide a new and independent proof for the main results obtained in \cite{MM17}, namely, the exact expression of $d(g)^2$ for $g$ belonging to the classical cut locus of the identity element $o$, as well as the determination of all shortest geodesics joining $o$ to such $g$.
Sub-Riemannian optimal synthesis for Carnot groups with the structure of a path geometry

Abstract:This paper explicitly constructs the complete set of optimal sub-Riemannian geodesics starting from a point for certain Carnot groups of step two. These are groups of dimension 2n+1 equipped with a left-invariant distribution of dimension n+1 such that at each point, there is a unique direction defining a nontrivial Lie bracket. A suitable explicit expression of geodesics, together with symmetries of the structure, allows us to identify the cut time and the cut locus by applying the so-called extended Hadamard technique.

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:We study the tangential case in 2-dimensional almost-Riemannian geometry. We analyse the connection with the Martinet case in sub-Riemannian geometry. We compute estimations of the exponential map which allow us to describe the conjugate locus and the cut locus at a tangency point. We prove that this last one generically accumulates at the tangency point as an asymmetric cusp whose branches are separated by the singular set.

Abstract:We consider the free nilpotent Lie algebra $L$ with 2 generators, of step 4, and the corresponding connected simply connected Lie group $G$. We study the left-invariant sub-Riemannian structure on $G$ defined by the generators of $L$ as an orthonormal frame. We compute two vector field models of $L$ by polynomial vector fields in $R^8$, and find an infinitesimal symmetry of the sub-Riemannian structure. Further, we compute explicitly the product rule in $G$, the right-invariant frame on $G$, linear on fibers Hamiltonians corresponding to the left-invariant and right-invariant frames on $G$, Casimir functions and co-adjoint orbits on $L^*$. Via Pontryagin maximum principle, we describe abnormal extremals and derive a Hamiltonian system $\dot \lambda = \vec{H}(\lambda)$, $\lambda \in T^*G$, for normal extremals. We compute 10 independent integrals of $\vec{H}$, of which only 7 are in involution. After reduction by 4 Casimir functions, the vertical subsystem of $\vec{H}$ on $L^*$ shows numerically a chaotic dynamics, which leads to a conjecture on non-integrability of $\vec{H}$ in the Liouville sense.

Abstract:We study the projection of the left-invariant sub-Riemannian structure on the 3D Heisenberg group $G$ to the Heisenberg 3D nil-manifold~$M$ -- the compact homogeneous space of $G$ by the discrete Heisenberg group. First we describe dynamical properties of the geodesic flow for $M$: periodic and dense orbits, and a dynamical characterization of the normal Hamiltonian flow of Pontryagin maximum principle. Then we obtain sharp twoside bounds of sub-Riemannian balls and distance in~$G$, and on this basis we estimate the cut time for sub-Riemannian geodesics in $M$.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to obtain the sub-Riemannian properties of the roto-translation group RT. At the same time, we compute the sub-Riemannian limits of Gaussian curvature associated with two kinds of canonical connections for a C2-smooth surface in the roto-translation group away from characteristic points and signed geodesic curvature associated with two kinds of canonical connections for C2-smooth curves on surfaces. Based on these results, we obtain a Gauss-Bonnet theorem in the RT.

Abstract:We consider the nilpotent left-invariant sub-Riemannian structure on the Engel group. This structure gives a fundamental local approximation of a generic rank 2 sub-Riemannian structure on a 4-manifold near a generic point (in particular, of the kinematic models of a car with a trailer). On the other hand, this is the simplest sub-Riemannian structure of step three. We describe the global structure of the cut locus (the set of points where geodesics lose their global optimality), the Maxwell set (the set of points that admit more than one minimizer), and the intersection of the cut locus with the caustic (the set of conjugate points along all geodesics). The group of symmetries of the cut locus is described: it is generated by a one-parameter group of dilations $\mathbb{R}_+$ and a discrete group of reflections $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$. The cut locus admits a stratification with 6 three-dimensional strata, 12 two-dimensional strata, and 2 one-dimensional strata. Three-dimen-sional strata of the cut locus are Maxwell strata of multiplicity 2 (for each point there are 2 minimizers). Two-dimensional strata of the cut locus consist of conjugate points. Finally, one-dimensional strata are Maxwell strata of infinite multiplicity, they consist of conjugate points as well. Projections of sub-Riemannian geodesics to the 2-dimensional plane of the distribution are Euler elasticae. For each point of the cut locus, we describe the Euler elasticae corresponding to minimizers coming to this point. Finally, we describe the structure of the optimal synthesis, i.e., the set of minimizers for each terminal point in the Engel group.

We show that the sub-Riemannian metric is tamed by the corresponding Riemannian metric on T*H2n+1. We also describe Riemannian and sub-Riemannian geodesics on T*H2n+1.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to analyse two related topics: the Rumin cohomology and the $\mathbb{H}$-orientability in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$. In the first three chapters we carefully describe the Rumin cohomology with particular emphasis at the second order differential operator $D$, giving examples in the cases $n=1$ and $n=2$. We also show the commutation between all Rumin differential operators and the pullback by a contact map and, more generally, describe pushforward and pullback explicitly in different situations. Differential forms can be used to define the notion of orientability; indeed in the fourth chapter we define the $\mathbb{H}$-orientability for $\mathbb{H}$-regular surfaces and we prove that $\mathbb{H}$-orientability implies standard orientability, while the opposite is not always true. Finally we show that, up to one point, a M\"obius strip in $\mathbb{H}^1$ is a $\mathbb{H}$-regular surface and we use this fact to prove that there exist $\mathbb{H}$-regular non-$\mathbb{H}$-orientable surfaces, at least in the case $n=1$. This opens the possibility for an analysis of Heisenberg currents mod $2$.

Abstract:We classify the finite primitive permutation groups which have a cyclic subgroup with two orbits. This extends classical topics in permutation group theory, and has arithmetic consequences. By a theorem of C. L. Siegel, affine algebraic curves with infinitely many integral points are parametrized by rational functions whose monodromy groups have this property. We classify the possibilities of these monodromy groups, and give an application to Hilbert's irreducibility theorem.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of Ricci curvature lower bound for symmetric sub-Markovian semigroups. We use this notion to investigate functional calculus of the Hodge-Dirac operator associated to the semigroup in link with the boundedness of suitable Riesz transforms. Our paper offers a unified framework that not only encapsulates existing results in some contexts but also yields new findings in others. This is demonstrated through applications in the frameworks of Riemannian manifolds, compact (quantum) groups, noncommutative tori, Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup, $q$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups and semigroups of Schur multipliers. We also provide an $\mathrm{L}^p$-Poincaré inequality that is applicable to all previously discussed contexts under assumptions of boundedness of Riesz transforms and uniform exponential stability. Finally, we prove the boundedness of some Riesz transforms in some contexts as compact Lie groups.

Abstract:The curvature exponent $N_{\mathrm{curv}}$ of a metric measure space is the smallest number $N$ for which the measure contraction property $\mathsf{MCP}(0,N)$ holds. In this paper, we study the curvature exponent of sub-Finsler Heisenberg groups equipped with the Lebesgue measure. We prove that $N_{\mathrm{curv}} \geq 5$, and the equality holds if and only if the corresponding sub-Finsler Heisenberg group is actually sub-Riemannian. Furthermore, we show that for every $N\geq 5$, there is a sub-Finsler structure on the Heisenberg group such that $N_{\mathrm{curv}}=N$.
