Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of type $F_{4}$, $E_{6}$, $E_{7}$ or $E_{8}$, and let $\mathfrak{g}$ be its Lie algebra. The adjoint variety $X_{ad} \subseteq \mathbb{P} \mathfrak{g}$ is defined as the unique closed orbit of the adjoint action of $G$ on $\mathbb{P}\mathfrak{g}$. $X_{ad}$ is a Fano contact manifold covered by lines in $\mathbb{P} \mathfrak{g}$. The subadjoint variety $S \subseteq \mathbb{P} W$ is denoted by the variety of lines on $X_{ad}$ through a fixed point $x$, where $W \subseteq T_{x}X$ is taken as the contact hyperplane. It follows from a result in representation theory of Vinberg that the GIT quotient space of codimension two linear sections of $S$ is isomorphic to the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)$. In this note, we investigate the problem of finding a geometric interpretation of the above isomorphism. As a main result, for each $\mathfrak{g}$ of the above type, we construct a natural open embedding of the GIT quotient space of nonsingular codimension two linear sections of $S$ into $\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)$ whose complement is a fixed hypersurface of degree 12. The key ingredient of our construction is to apply a correspondence of Bahargava and Ho which relates the above moduli problem to a moduli problem on curves of genus one.

Abstract:In this paper we study the following question: do sub-Laplacian type operators have non-trivial index theory on Carnot manifolds in higher degree of nilpotency? The problem relates to characterizing the structure of the space of hypoelliptic sub-Laplacian type operators, and results going back to Rothschild-Stein and Helffer-Nourrigat. In two degrees of nilpotency, there is a rich index theory by work of van Erp-Baum on contact manifolds, that was later extended to polycontact manifolds by Goffeng-Kuzmin. We provide a plethora of examples in higher degree of nilpotency where the index theory is trivial.

Abstract:On general Carnot groups, the definition of a possible hypoelliptic Hodge-Laplacian on forms using the Rumin complex has been considered by Rumin, who introduced a 0-order pseudodifferential operator on forms. However, for questions regarding regularity for example, where one needs sharp estimates, this 0-order operator is not suitable. Up to now, there have only been very few attempts to define hypoelliptic Hodge-Laplacians on forms that would allow for such sharp estimates. Indeed, this question is rather difficult to address in full generality, the main issue being that the Rumin exterior differential $d_c$ is not homogeneous on arbitrary Carnot groups. In this note, we consider the specific example of the free Carnot group of step 3 with 2 generators, and we introduce three possible definitions of hypoelliptic Hodge-Laplacians. We compare how these three possible Laplacians can be used to obtain sharp div-curl type inequalities akin to those considered by Bourgain & Brezis and Lanzani & Stein for the de Rham complex, or their subelliptic counterparts obtained by Baldi, Franchi & Pansu for the Rumin complex on Heisenberg groups.

Abstract:We establish global bounds for solutions to stationary and time-dependent Schrödinger equations associated with the sublaplacian $\mathcal L$ on the Heisenberg group, as well as its pure fractional power $\mathcal L^s$ and conformally invariant fractional power $\mathcal L_s$. The main ingredient is a new abstract uniform weighted resolvent estimate which is proved by using the method of weakly conjugate operators -- a variant of Mourre's commutator method -- and Hardy's type inequalities on the Heisenberg group. As applications, we show Kato-type smoothing effects for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and spectral stability of the sublaplacian perturbed by complex-valued decaying potentials satisfying an explicit subordination condition. In the local case $s=1$, we obtain uniform estimates without any symmetry or derivative loss, which improve previous results.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of solutions to the extended Bogomolny equations on $\Sigma \times \mathbb{R_{+,y}}$ with gauge group $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ satisfying the generalized Nahm pole boundary condition as $y\to 0$ and limiting to complex flat connections as $y\to \infty$. Refining the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence of \cite{MH2}, we identify these moduli spaces with certain holomorphic lagrangian sub-manifolds inside the moduli space of Higgs bundles.

Abstract:We work out the exact relationship between algebraic modular forms for a two-by-two general unitary group over a definite quaternion algebra, and those arising from genera of positive-definite quinary lattices, relating stabilisers of local lattices with specific open compact subgroups, paramodular at split places, and with Atkin-Lehner operators. Combining this with the recent work of Rösner and Weissauer, proving conjectures of Ibukiyama on Jacquet-Langlands type correspondences (mildly generalised here), provides an effective tool for computing Hecke eigenvalues for Siegel modular forms of degree two and paramodular level. It also enables us to prove examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues connecting Siegel modular forms of degrees two and one. These include some of a type conjectured by Harder at level one, supported by computations of Fretwell at higher levels, and a subtly different congruence discovered experimentally by Buzzard and Golyshev.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish Liouville type results for semilinear subelliptic systems associated with the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ involving two different kinds of general nonlinearities. The main technique of the proof is the method of moving planes combined with some integral inequalities replacing the role of maximum principles. As a special case, we obtain the Liouville theorem for the Lane-Emden system on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$, which also appears to be a new result in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper we first prove a number of important inequalities with explicit constants in the setting of the Heisenberg group. This includes the fractional and integer Sobolev, Gagliardo-Nirenberg, (weighted) Hardy-Sobolev, Nash inequalities, and their logarithmic versions. In the case of the first order Sobolev inequality, our constant recovers the sharp constant of Jerison and Lee. Remarkably, we also establish the analogue of the Gross inequality with a semi-probability measure on the Heisenberg group that allows -- as it happens in the Euclidean setting -- an extension to infinite dimensions, and particularly can be regarded as an inequality on the infinite dimensional $\mathbb{H}^{\infty}$. Finally, we prove the so-called generalised Poincaré inequality on the Heisenberg group both with respect to the aforementioned semi-probability measure and the Haar measure, also with explicit constants.

Abstract:The notion of formal Siegel modular forms for an arithmetic subgroup $\Gamma$ of the symplectic group of genus $n$ is a generalization of symmetric formal Fourier-Jacobi series. Assuming an upper bound on the affine covering number of the Siegel modular variety associated with $\Gamma$, we prove that all formal Siegel modular forms are given by Fourier-Jacobi expansions of classical holomorphic Siegel modular forms. We also show that the required upper bound is always met if $2\leq n \leq 4$. As an application we consider the case of the paramodular group of squarefree level and genus $2$.

Subelliptic pseudo-differential operators and Fourier integral operators on compact Lie groups

Abstract:In this memoir we extend the theory of global pseudo-differential operators to the setting of arbitrary sub-Riemannian structures on a compact Lie group. More precisely, given a compact Lie group $G$, and the sub-Laplacian $\mathcal{L}$ associated to a system of vector fields $X=\{X_1,\cdots,X_k\}$ satisfying the Hörmander condition, we introduce a (subelliptic) pseudo-differential calculus associated to $\mathcal{L},$ based on the matrix-valued quantisation process developed in [138]. This theory will be developed as follows. First, we will investigate the singular kernels of this calculus, estimates of $L^p$-$L^p$, $H^1$-$L^1$, $L^\infty$-$BMO$ type and also the weak (1,1) boundedness of these subelliptic Hörmander classes. Between the obtained estimates we prove subelliptic versions of the celebrated sharp Fefferman $L^p$-theorem and the Calderón-Vaillancourt theorem. The obtained estimates will be used to establish the boundedness of subelliptic operators on subelliptic Sobolev and Besov spaces. We will investigate the ellipticity, the construction of parametrices, the heat traces and the regularisation of traces for the developed subelliptic calculus. A subelliptic global functional calculus will be established as well as a subelliptic version of Hulanicki theorem. The approach established in characterising our subelliptic Hörmander classes (by proving that the definition of these classes is independent of certain parameters) will be also applied in order to characterise the global Hörmander classes on arbitrary graded Lie groups developed in [90].

Quantum limits of perturbed sub-Riemannian contact Laplacians in dimension 3

Abstract:On the unit tangent bundle of a compact Riemannian surface, we consider a natural sub-Riemannian Laplacian associated with the canonical contact structure. In the large eigenvalue limit, we study the escape of mass at infinity in the cotangent space of eigenfunctions for hypoelliptic selfadjoint perturbations of this operator. Using semiclassical methods, we show that, in this subelliptic regime, eigenfunctions concentrate on certain quantized level sets along the geodesic flow direction and that they verify invariance properties involving both the geodesic vector field and the perturbation term.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a Gaffney type inequality, in $W^{\ell,p}$-Sobolev spaces, for differential forms on sub-Riemannian contact manifolds without boundary, having bounded geometry (hence, in particular, we have in mind non-compact manifolds). Here $p\in]1,\infty[$ and $\ell=1,2$ depending on the order of the differential form we are considering. The proof relies on the structure of the Rumin's complex of differential forms in contact manifolds, on a Sobolev-Gaffney inequality proved by Baldi-Franchi in the setting of the Heisenberg groups and on some geometric properties that can be proved for sub-Riemannian contact manifolds with bounded geometry.

Hausdorff limits of submanifolds of symplectic and contact manifolds

Abstract:We study sequences of immersions respecting bounds coming from Riemannian geometry and apply the ensuing results to the study of sequences of submanifolds of symplectic and contact manifolds. This allows us to study the subtle interaction between the Hausdorff metric and the Lagrangian Hofer and spectral metrics. In the process, we get proofs of metric versions of the nearby Lagrangian conjecture and of the Viterbo conjecture on the spectral norm. We also get $C^0$-rigidity results for a vast class of important submanifolds of symplectic and contact manifolds in the presence of Riemannian bounds. Likewise, we get a Lagrangian generalization of results of Hofer and Viterbo on simultaneous $C^0$ and Hofer/spectral limits~ -- ~even without any such bounds.

Abstract:We prove the local Lipschitz regularity for solutions to an orthotropic $q$ Laplacian-type equation in the Heisenberg group. The technique we apply is largely inspired by the works of X. Zhong, where the $q$-Laplacian was studied in the Heinsenberg group and the Hölder regularity of gradient was proved. Due to the degeneracy of the present equation, this regularity of the gradient is not even known in the Euclidean setting, and only its boundedness is expected.

Abstract:We consider the free nilpotent Lie algebra $L$ with 2 generators, of step 4, and the corresponding connected simply connected Lie group $G$. We study the left-invariant sub-Riemannian structure on $G$ defined by the generators of $L$ as an orthonormal frame. We compute two vector field models of $L$ by polynomial vector fields in $R^8$, and find an infinitesimal symmetry of the sub-Riemannian structure. Further, we compute explicitly the product rule in $G$, the right-invariant frame on $G$, linear on fibers Hamiltonians corresponding to the left-invariant and right-invariant frames on $G$, Casimir functions and co-adjoint orbits on $L^*$. Via Pontryagin maximum principle, we describe abnormal extremals and derive a Hamiltonian system $\dot \lambda = \vec{H}(\lambda)$, $\lambda \in T^*G$, for normal extremals. We compute 10 independent integrals of $\vec{H}$, of which only 7 are in involution. After reduction by 4 Casimir functions, the vertical subsystem of $\vec{H}$ on $L^*$ shows numerically a chaotic dynamics, which leads to a conjecture on non-integrability of $\vec{H}$ in the Liouville sense.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to analyse two related topics: the Rumin cohomology and the $\mathbb{H}$-orientability in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$. In the first three chapters we carefully describe the Rumin cohomology with particular emphasis at the second order differential operator $D$, giving examples in the cases $n=1$ and $n=2$. We also show the commutation between all Rumin differential operators and the pullback by a contact map and, more generally, describe pushforward and pullback explicitly in different situations. Differential forms can be used to define the notion of orientability; indeed in the fourth chapter we define the $\mathbb{H}$-orientability for $\mathbb{H}$-regular surfaces and we prove that $\mathbb{H}$-orientability implies standard orientability, while the opposite is not always true. Finally we show that, up to one point, a M\"obius strip in $\mathbb{H}^1$ is a $\mathbb{H}$-regular surface and we use this fact to prove that there exist $\mathbb{H}$-regular non-$\mathbb{H}$-orientable surfaces, at least in the case $n=1$. This opens the possibility for an analysis of Heisenberg currents mod $2$.
