Abstract:We study moduli of odd-framed $\mathcal{N}=2$ elliptic curves subject to certain conditions, and show that the fermionic part of the moduli problem is essentially controlled by the Appell-Lerch sum, familiar from the theory of mock modular forms.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:First, I will quickly recall some of the basic elements of the minimal model program. Then, I concentrate on the interactions between the minimal model program and some moduli problems. In particular, I explain the construction of moduli spaces of varieties of general type via the minimal model program. Abstract. The Hecke symmetry is a salient feature of Shimura varieties. In the more recent past these symmetries have led to the notion of leaves, a global structure on the reduction of modular varieties of PEL type defined by Oort, and conjecturally for all Shimura varieties with good reduction. The Hecke symmetry also led to the notion of canonical coordinates on leaves, generalizing the classical Serre-Tate coordinates. We will discuss some recent works related to the Hecke symmetry : (1) -adic and p-adic monodromy of leaves, and irreducibility of leaves (joint work with F. Oort). One of the methods for showing that the p-adic monodromy is big is inspired by H. Hida. (2) CM lifting modulo Hecke symmetry (joint work with B. Conrad and F. Oort). Abstract. In this lecture we explain how to attach a p-adic representation to a vector bundle with strongly semistable reduction of degree zero on a p-adic curve. We also discuss higher dimensional generalizations. This is a report on joint work with Annette Werner. Abstract. Since the proof of Iwasawa's main conjecture in the classical case (the- orem of Mazur and Wiles), automorphic forms on GL(2) have played an essential role to understand GL(1)-problems. After the breakthrough by A. Wiles ((1)), there has been a substantial progress in the class field theory for GL2. In this talk, open problems in classical Iwasawa theory are discussed from this perspective, based on Galois deformations.

Abstract:For physicists: For supersymmetric quantum mechanics, there are cases when a mod-2 Witten index can be defined, even when a more ordinary $\mathbb{Z}$-valued Witten index vanishes. Similarly, for 2d supersymmetric quantum field theories, there are cases when a mod-2 elliptic genus can be defined, even when a more ordinary elliptic genus vanishes. We study such mod-2 elliptic genera in the context of $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ supersymmetry, and show that they are characterized by mod-2 reductions of integral modular forms, under some assumptions. For mathematicians: We study the image of the standard homomorphism $\pi_n \mathrm{TMF}\to \pi_n \mathrm{KO}((q))\simeq \mathbb{Z}/2((q))$ for $n=8k+1$ or $8k+2$, by relating them to the mod-2 reductions of integral modular forms.

Abstract:Let $N$ and $p$ be primes $\geq 5$ such that $p \mid \mid N-1$. In this situation, Mazur defined and studied the $p$-Eisenstein quotient $\tilde{J}^{(p)}$ of $J_0(N)$. We prove a kind of modulo $p$ version of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the ``$p$-Eisenstein part'' of even quadratic twists of $\tilde{J}^{(p)}$. Our result is the analogue for even quadratic twists of a result of Mazur concerning odd quadratic twists.

Abstract:Let $h_n(v)$ be the sequence of rational functions with $$ \frac{h_n(v)}{v}-nh_n(v)+(n-1)h_{n-1}(v)-vh_{n-1}'(v)+\frac{v(v(vh_{n-1}(v))')'}{4}=0 $$ for $n>0$ and $h_0(v)=1$. We prove that $h_n(v)$ has a pole at $v=\frac{1}{n}$ if and only if $n$ is a sum of two squares of integers. Moreover, if $r_2(n)=\#\{(a,b)\in \mathbb Z^2: a^2+b^2=n\}$, then we derive the formula $$ \underset{v=1/n}{\mathrm{Res}}h_n(v)=\frac{(-1)^{n-1}r_2(n)}{n16^n}. $$ The results are then generalized to arbitrary modular forms with respect to $\Gamma(2)$ and as a consequence we obtain a new criterion for Lehmer's conjecture for Ramanujan's $\tau$-function.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different from 2 and residual characteristic $p$. This paper concerns the $\ell$-modular representations of a connected reductive group $G$ distinguished by a Galois involution, with $\ell$ an odd prime different from $p$. We start by proving a general theorem allowing to lift supercuspidal $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ distinguished by an arbitrary closed subgroup $H$ to a distinguished supercuspidal $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$-representation. Given a quadratic field extension $E/F$ and an irreducible $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n(E)$, we verify the Jacquet conjecture in the modular setting that if the Langlands parameter $\phi_\pi$ is irreducible and conjugate-self-dual, then $\pi$ is either $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$-distinguished or $(\mathrm{GL}_n(F),\omega_{E/F})$-distinguished (where $\omega_{E/F}$ is the quadratic character of $F^\times$ associated to the quadratic field extension $E/F$ by the local class field theory), but not both, which extends one result of Sécherre to the case $p=2$. We give another application of our lifting theorem for supercuspidal representations distinguished by a unitary involution, extending one result of Zou to $p=2$.

Abstract:A bstract We extend the framework of modular invariant supersymmetric theories to encompass invariance under more general discrete groups Γ, that allow the presence of several moduli and make connection with the theory of automorphic forms. Moduli span a coset space G / K , where G is a Lie group and K is a compact subgroup of G , modded out by Γ. For a general choice of G , K , Γ and a generic matter content, we explicitly construct a minimal Kähler potential and a general superpotential, for both rigid and local $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 supersymmetric theories. We also specialize our construction to the case G = Sp(2 g, R), K = U( g ) and Γ = Sp(2 g, Z), whose automorphic forms are Siegel modular forms. We show how our general theory can be consistently restricted to multi-dimensional regions of the moduli space enjoying residual symmetries. After choosing g = 2, we present several examples of models for lepton and quark masses where Yukawa couplings are Siegel modular forms of level 2.

The Explicit Hypergeometric-Modularity Method II

Abstract:In the first paper of this sequence, we provided an explicit hypergeometric modularity method by combining different techniques from the classical, $p$-adic, and finite field settings. In this article, we explore an application of this method from a motivic viewpoint through some known hypergeometric well-poised formulae of Whipple and McCarthy. We first use the method to derive a class of special weight three modular forms, labeled as $\mathbb{K}_2$-functions. Then using well-poised hypergeometric formulae we further construct a class of degree four Galois representations of the absolute Galois groups of the corresponding cyclotomic fields. These representations are then shown to be extendable to $G_{\mathbb{Q}}$ and the $L$-function of each extension coincides with the $L$-function of an automorphic form.

Modular curves $X_1(n)$ as moduli spaces of point arrangements and applications

Abstract:For a complex elliptic curve $E$ and a point $p$ of order $n$ on it, the images of the points $p_k=kp$ under the Weierstrass embedding of $E$ into $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$ are collinear if and only if the sum of indices is divisible by $n$. Thus, it provides a realization of a certain matroid. We study this matroid in detail and prove that its realization space is isomorphic (over $\mathbb{C}$) to the modular curve $X_1(n)$, provided $n\geq 10$, which also provides an integral model of $X_1(n)$. In the process, we find a connection to the classical Ceva and Böröczky examples of special point and line configurations. We also discuss the situation for smaller values of $n$.

Formal Siegel modular forms for arithmetic subgroups

Abstract:The notion of formal Siegel modular forms for an arithmetic subgroup $\Gamma$ of the symplectic group of genus $n$ is a generalization of symmetric formal Fourier-Jacobi series. Assuming an upper bound on the affine covering number of the Siegel modular variety associated with $\Gamma$, we prove that all formal Siegel modular forms are given by Fourier-Jacobi expansions of classical holomorphic Siegel modular forms. We also show that the required upper bound is always met if $2\leq n \leq 4$. As an application we consider the case of the paramodular group of squarefree level and genus $2$.

The basis problem for modular forms for the Weil representation

Abstract:The vector valued theta series of a positive-definite even lattice is a modular form for the Weil representation of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We show that the space of cusp forms for the Weil representation is generated by such functions. This gives a positive answer to Eichler's basis problem in this case. As applications we derive Waldspurger's result on the basis problem for scalar valued modular forms and give a new proof of the surjectivity of the Borcherds lift based on the analysis of local Picard groups.

Mod $\ell$ multiplicities in certain $U(4)$ Shimura varieties

Abstract:We use the Taylor-Wiles-Kisin patching method to investigate the multiplicities with which Hecke eigensystems appear in the mod-$\ell$ cohomology of unitary Shimura sets, associated to central simple algebras of the form $B=M_2(D)$, for $D$ a nonsplit quaternion algebra over a $CM$ field. We follow a similar strategy to the one used in our prior work for Shimura curves, exploiting the natural self-duality in this setting. Our method requires a careful analysis of certain irreducible components of local deformation rings. We introduce and analyze a new local model for local deformation rings specific to the case of a banal prime, which is significantly better behaved than the standard local models for local deformation rings. Our main result is a "multiplicity $2^a$ result", in the case where quaternion algebra $D$ ramifies only at banal primes, where $a$ is the number of places in the discriminant of $D$ which satisfy a certain Galois theoretic condition. We also prove an additional statement about the endomorphism ring of the cohomology of the Shimura set, which has an application to the study of congruence modules.

Abstract: In this paper, we prove Dahmen and Beukers' conjecture that the number of integral Lam\'{e} equations with index $n$ modulo scalar equivalence with the monodromy group dihedral $D_{N}$ of order $2N$ is given by \[L_{n}(N)=\frac{1}{2}\left( \frac{n(n+1)\Psi(N)}{24}-\left( a_{n}% \phi(N)+b_{n}\phi(\tfrac{N}{2}) \right) \right) +\frac{2}% {3}\varepsilon_{n}(N).\] Our main tool is the new pre-modular form $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ of weight $n(n+1)/2$ introduced by Lin and Wang \cite{LW2} and the associated modular form $M_{n,N}(\tau):=\prod_{(r,s)}Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ of weight $\Psi(N)n(n+1)/{2}$, where the product runs over all $N$-torsion points $(r,s)$ of exact order $N$. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to the precise formula of the vanishing order of $M_{n,N}(\tau)$ at infinity: \[v_{\infty}(M_{n,N}(\tau))=a_{n}\phi(N)+b_{n}\phi( N/2).\] This formula is extremely hard to prove because the explicit expression of $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ is not known for general $n$. Here we succeed to prove it by using certain Painlev\'{e} VI equations. Our result also indicates that this conjecture is intimately connected with the problem of counting pole numbers of algebraic solutions of certain Painlev\'{e} VI equations. The main results of this paper has been announced in \cite{Lin-CDM}.

Abstract:We give a moduli description for the ramified unitary local model of signature (n-1,1) with any parahoric level structure when the residue field has characteristic not equals 2, confirming a conjecture of Smithling. As applications, we can present moduli descriptions for: (1) ramified unitary Pappas-Zhu local models with any parahoric level; (2) the irreducible components of their special fiber with maximal parahoric level; (3) integral model of ramified unitary Shimura varieties for any (quasi-)parahoric level.

Abstract:We study the limit of Calabi-Yau modular forms, and in particular, those resulting in classical modular forms. We then study two parameter families of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds and describe the modular forms arising from the degeneracy loci. In the case of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds our approach gives a mathematical proof of many observations about modularity properties of topological string amplitudes starting with the work of Candelas, Font, Katz and Morrison. In the case of Calabi-Yau fourfolds we derive new identities not computed before.

Abstract:We consider the generating series of special cycles on $\mathcal{A}_1(N)\times \mathcal{A}_g(N)$, with full level $N$ structure, valued in the cohomology of degree $2g$. The modularity theorem of Kudla-Millson for locally symmetric spaces implies that these series are modular. When $N=1$, the images of these loci in $\mathcal{A}_g$ are the $d$-elliptic Noether-Lefschetz loci, which are conjectured to be modular. In the appendix, it is shown that the resulting modular forms are nonzero for $g=2$ when $N\geq 11$ and $N\neq 12$.
