Abstract:A longstanding open problem asks for an aperiodic monotile, also known as an "einstein": a shape that admits tilings of the plane, but never periodic tilings. We answer this problem for topological disk tiles by exhibiting a continuum of combinatorially equivalent aperiodic polygons. We first show that a representative example, the "hat" polykite, can form clusters called "metatiles", for which substitution rules can be defined. Because the metatiles admit tilings of the plane, so too does the hat. We then prove that generic members of our continuum of polygons are aperiodic, through a new kind of geometric incommensurability argument. Separately, we give a combinatorial, computer-assisted proof that the hat must form hierarchical -- and hence aperiodic -- tilings.

Abstract:The recently discovered Hat tiling admits a 4-dimensional family of shape deformations, including the 1-parameter family already known to yield alternate monotiles. The continuous hulls resulting from these tilings are all topologically conjugate dynamical systems, and hence have the same dynamics and topology. We construct and analyze a self-similar element of this family called the CAP tiling, and we use it to derive properties of the entire family. The CAP tiling has pure-point dynamical spectrum, which we compute explicitly, and comes from a natural cut-and-project scheme with 2-dimensional Euclidean internal space. All other members of the Hat family, in particular the original version constructed from 30-60-90 right triangles, are obtained via small modifications of the projection from this cut-and-project scheme.

Abstract:The diffraction pattern from the recently reported aperiodic ` einstein ', or `hat', monohedral tiling [Smith et al. (2023). arXiv:2303.10798v1] has been analyzed. The structure is the hexagonal mta net, a kite tiling, with aperiodic vertex deletions. A large model's diffraction pattern displays a robust sixfold periodicity in plane group p 6. A repeating, roughly triangular motif of `diffused intensity' arises between the strongest Bragg peaks. The motif contains high-density regions of discrete `satellite' peaks, rather than continuous `diffuse scattering', breaking mirror symmetry, consistent with the chiral hat tiling.

Abstract:<div><p>In 2023, two striking, nearly simultaneous, mathematical discoveries have excited their respective communities, one by Greenfeld and Tao, the other (the Hat tile) by Smith, Myers, Kaplan and Goodman-Strauss, which can both be summed up as the following: there exists a single tile that tiles, but not periodically (sometimes dubbed the einstein problem). The two settings and the tools are quite different (as emphasized by their almost disjoint bibliographies): one in euclidean geometry, the other in group theory. Both are highly nontrivial: in the first case, one allows complex shapes; in the second one, also the space to tile may be complex.</p><p>We propose here a framework that embeds both of these problems. We illustrate our setting by transforming the Hat tile into a new aperiodic group monotile, and we describe its symmetries.</p></div>

Abstract:A Gelfand-Tsetlin function is a real-valued function $\phi:C \to \mathbb{R}$ defined on a finite subset $C$ of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with the property that $\phi(x) \leq \phi(y)$ for every edge $\langle x,y \rangle$ directed north or east between two elements of $C$. We study the statistical physics properties of random Gelfand-Tsetlin functions from the perspective of random surfaces, showing in particular that the surface tension of Gelfand-Tsetlin functions at gradient $u = (u_1,u_2) \in \mathbb{R}_{>0}^2$ is given by \begin{align*} \sigma(u_1,u_2) = - \log (u_1 + u_2 ) - \log \sin (\pi u_1/(u_1+u_2)) -1 + \log \pi. \end{align*} A Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern is a Gelfand-Tsetlin function defined on the triangle $T_n = \{(x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb{Z}^2 : 1 \leq x_2 \leq x_1 \leq n \}$. We show that after rescaling, a sequence of random Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with fixed diagonal heights approximating a probability measure $\mu$ satisfies a large deviation principle with speed $n^2$ and rate functional of the form \begin{align*} \mathcal{E}[\psi] := \int_{\blacktriangle} \sigma(\nabla \psi)\, \mathrm{d}s \,\mathrm{d}t - \chi[\mu] \end{align*} where $\chi[\mu]$ is Voiculescu's free entropy. We show that the Euler-Lagrange equations satisfied by the minimiser of the rate functional agree with those governing the free compression operation in free probability, thereby resolving a recent conjecture of Shlyakhtenko and Tao.

Abstract:Tiling models can reveal unexpected ways in which local constraints give rise to exotic long-range spatial structure. The recently discovered Hat monotile (and its mirror image) has been shown to be aperiodic~[Smith et al., <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.10798" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.10798">arXiv:2303.10798</a> (2023)]; it can tile the plane with no holes or overlaps, but cannot do so periodically. We show that the structure enforced by the local space-filling constraints is quasiperiodic with hexagonal (C6) rotational symmetry. Although this symmetry is compatible with periodicity, the incommensurate ratio characterizing the quasiperiodicity stays locked to the golden mean as the tile parameters are continuously varied. We analyze a modification of the metatiles introduced by Smith et al. that yields a set of ``Key tiles'' that can be constructed as projections of a subset of six-dimensional hypercubic lattice points onto the two-dimensional tiling plane. We analytically compute the diffraction pattern of a set of unit masses placed at the tiling vertices, establishing the quasiperiodic nature of the tiling. We point out several unusual features of the family of Key tilings and associated Hat tilings, including the tile rearrangements associated with the phason degree of freedom associated with incommensurate density waves, which exhibit novel features that may influence the elastic properties of a material in which atoms or larger particles spontaneously exhibit the symmetries of the Hat tiling.

Abstract:Ideal crystalline membranes, realized by graphene and other atomic monolayers, exhibit rich physics - a universal anomalous elasticity of the critical "flat" phase characterized by a negative Poisson ratio, universally singular elastic moduli, order-from-disorder and a crumpling transition. We formulate a generalized $D$-dimensional field theory, parameterized by an $O(d)\times O(D)$ tensor field with an {\it energetic} longitudinal constraint. For a soft constraint the resulting field theory describes a new class of a fluctuating "tattered" membranes, exhibiting a nonzero density of topological connectivity defects - slits, cracks and faults at an effective medium level. For hard, infinite-coupling constraint, the model reproduces the conventional crystalline membrane and its crumpling transition, and thereby demonstrates the essence of the difference between an elastic membrane and conventional field theories. Two additional fixed points emerge within the critical manifold, (i) globally attractive, "isotropic" $O(d)\times O(D)$, and (ii) "transverse", which in $D=2$ is the exact "dual" of the elastic membrane. Their properties are obtained in general $D,d$ from the renormalization group and the self-consistent screening analyses.

Abstract:Physical experiments can characterize the elastic response of granular materials in terms of macroscopic state-variables, namely volume (packing) fraction and stress, while the microstructure is not accessible and thus neglected. Here, by means of numerical simulations, we analyze dense, frictionless, granular assemblies with the final goal to relate the elastic moduli to the fabric state, i.e., to micro-structural averaged contact network features as contact number density and anisotropy. The particle samples are first isotropically compressed and later quasi-statically sheared under constant volume (undrained conditions). From various static, relaxed configurations at different shear strains, now infinitesimal strain steps are applied to "measure" the effective elastic response; we quantify the strain needed so that plasticity in the sample develops as soon as contact and structure rearrangements happen. Because of the anisotropy induced by shear, volumetric and deviatoric stresses and strains are cross-coupled via a single anisotropy modulus, which is proportional to the product of deviatoric fabric and bulk modulus (i.e. the isotropic fabric). Interestingly, the shear modulus of the material depends also on the actual stress state, along with the contact configuration anisotropy. Finally, a constitutive model based on incremental evolution equations for stress and fabric is introduced. By using the previously measured dependence of the stiffness tensor (elastic moduli) on the microstructure, the theory is able to predict with good agreement the evolution of pressure, shear stress and deviatoric fabric (anisotropy) for an independent undrained cyclic shear test, including the response to reversal of strain.
Planar aperiodic tile sets: from Wang tiles to the Hat and Spectre monotiles

Abstract:A brief history of planar aperiodic tile sets is presented, starting from the Domino Problem proposed by Hao Wang in 1961. We provide highlights that led to the discovery of the Taylor--Socolar aperiodic monotile in 2010 and the Hat and Spectre aperiodic monotiles in 2023. The Spectre tile is an amazingly simple monotile; a single tile whose translated and rotated copies tile the plane but only in a way that lacks any translational periodicity. We showcase this breakthrough discovery through the 60$+$ years that aperiodic tile sets have been considered.

Abstract:We consider a new family $(\mathcal{T}_n)_{n\geq1}$ of aperiodic sets of Wang tiles and we describe the dynamical properties of the set $\Omega_n$ of valid configurations $\mathbb{Z}^2\to\mathcal{T}_n$. The tiles can be defined as the different instances of a square shape computer chip whose inputs and outputs are 3-dimensional integer vectors. The family include the Ammann aperiodic set of 16 Wang tiles and gathers the hallmarks of other small aperiodic sets of Wang tiles. Notably, the tiles satisfy additive versions of equations verified by the Kari--Culik aperiodic sets of 14 and 13 Wang tiles. Also configurations in $\Omega_n$ are the codings of a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action on a 2-dimensional torus like the Jeandel--Rao aperiodic set of 11 Wang tiles. The family broadens the relation between quadratic integers and aperiodic tilings beyond the omnipresent golden ratio as the dynamics of $\Omega_n$ involves the positive root $\beta$ of the polynomial $x^2-nx-1$, also known as the $n$-th metallic mean. We show the existence of an almost one-to-one factor map $\Omega_n\to\mathbb{T}^2$ which commutes the shift action on $\Omega_n$ with horizontal and vertical translations by $\beta$ on $\mathbb{T}^2$. The factor map can be explicitely defined by the average of the top labels from the same row of tiles as in Kari and Culik examples. The proofs are based on the minimality of $\Omega_n$ (proved in a previous article) and a polygonal partition of $\mathbb{T}^2$ which we show is a Markov partition for the toral $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action. The partition and the sets of Wang tiles are symmetric which makes them, like Penrose tilings, worthy of investigation.

Abstract:How many different tiles are needed at the minimum to create aperiodicity? Several tilings made of two tiles were discovered, the first one being by Penrose in the seventies. Since then, scientists discovered other aperiodic tilings made of two tiles, including the square-triangle one, a tiling that has been particularly useful for the study of dodecagonal quasicrystals and soft matters. An open problem still exists: Can one tile be sufficient to create aperiodicity? This is known as the ein stein problem. We present in this paper an aperiodic tiling made of one single tile: an isosceles right triangle. The tile itself is not aperiodic and therefore not a solution to the ein stein problem but we present a set of substitution rules on the same tile that forces the tiling to be aperiodic. This paper presents its construction rules that proves its aperiodicity. We also show that this tiling offers an underlying dodecagonal structure close to the one of square-triangle tiling.

Abstract:We give a constructive method that can decrease the number of prototiles needed to tile a space. We achieve this by exchanging edge to edge matching rules for a small atlas of permitted patches. This method is illustrated with Wang tiles, and we apply our method to present via these rules a single prototile that can only tile $R^3$ aperiodically, and a pair of square tiles that can only tile $R^2$ aperiodically.

Abstract:We show that diffraction features of $1D$ quasicrystals can be retrieved from a single topological quantity, the Čech cohomology group, $\check{H}^{1}\cong\mathbb{Z}^2$, which encodes all relevant combinatorial information of tilings. We present a constructive way to calculate $\check{H}^{1}$ for a large variety of aperiodic tilings. By means of two winding numbers, we compare the diffraction features contained in $\check{H}^{1}$ to the gap labeling theorem, another topological tool used to label spectral gaps in the integrated density of states. In the light of this topological description, we discuss similarities and differences between families of aperiodic tilings, and the resilience of topological features against perturbations.

Hyperuniformity of quasiperiodic tilings generated by continued fractions

Abstract:Hyperuniformity is a property of certain heteroneous media in which density fluctuations in the long wavelength range decay to zero. In reciprocal space this behavior translates into a decay of Fourier intensities in the range near small wavenumbers. In this paper quasiperiodic tilings constructed by word concatenation are under study. The lattice is generated from a parameter given by its continued fraction so that quasiperiodicity emerges for infinite when irrational generators are into consideration. Numerical simulations show a quite regular quadratic decay of Fourier intensities, regardless of the number considered for the generator parameter, which leads us to formulate the hypothesis that this type of media is strongly hyperuniform of order 3. Theoretical derivations show that the density fluctuations scale in the same proportion as the wavenumbers. Furthermore, it is rigorously proved that the structure factor decays around the origin according to the pattern $S(k) \sim k^4$. This result is validated with several numerical examples with different generating continued fractions.
