Abstract:Tiling models can reveal unexpected ways in which local constraints give rise to exotic long-range spatial structure. The recently discovered Hat monotile (and its mirror image) has been shown to be aperiodic~[Smith et al., arXiv:2303.10798 (2023)]; it can tile the plane with no holes or overlaps, but cannot do so periodically. We show that the structure enforced by the local space-filling constraints is quasiperiodic with hexagonal (C6) rotational symmetry. Although this symmetry is compatible with periodicity, the incommensurate ratio characterizing the quasiperiodicity stays locked to the golden mean as the tile parameters are continuously varied. We analyze a modification of the metatiles introduced by Smith et al. that yields a set of ``Key tiles'' that can be constructed as projections of a subset of six-dimensional hypercubic lattice points onto the two-dimensional tiling plane. We analytically compute the diffraction pattern of a set of unit masses placed at the tiling vertices, establishing the quasiperiodic nature of the tiling. We point out several unusual features of the family of Key tilings and associated Hat tilings, including the tile rearrangements associated with the phason degree of freedom associated with incommensurate density waves, which exhibit novel features that may influence the elastic properties of a material in which atoms or larger particles spontaneously exhibit the symmetries of the Hat tiling.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to reveal the singular long - range spatial structures formed by local space - filling constraints. Specifically, the authors studied the quasicrystal structure of the recently discovered Hat single - tile (and its mirror image). The Hat single - tile can tile the plane seamlessly and without overlap, but cannot tile it periodically. The authors showed that the structure enforced by local space - filling constraints has the quasi - periodicity of hexagonal (C6) rotational symmetry, and the ratio of this quasi - periodic feature remains locked at the golden ratio when continuously varying the tile parameters. ### Main problem decomposition: 1. **Characteristics of Hat single - tile**: - The Hat single - tile and its mirror image can tile the plane, but cannot tile it in a periodic manner. - The non - periodicity of the Hat single - tile was proven through the concepts of "meta - tile" and "Key - tile" introduced by Smith et al. 2. **Quasi - periodic structure**: - The authors showed that the tiling structure of the Hat single - tile is quasi - periodic and has hexagonal (C6) rotational symmetry. - The characteristic ratio of quasi - periodicity is related to the golden ratio \(\phi=\frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2}\). 3. **Projection of six - dimensional hypercubic lattice**: - The authors analyzed a method of regarding Hat tiling as the projection of a six - dimensional hypercubic lattice point set onto a two - dimensional plane. - Through this method, the authors calculated the diffraction pattern of unit mass placed at the vertices of the tiling, confirming its quasi - periodic nature. 4. **Special properties of Key - tile**: - The vertices of Key - tile are the key vertices identified by Smith et al. - The authors showed the simple structure of Key - tile in six - dimensional space and analyzed their dilation and contraction operations. 5. **Calculation of diffraction pattern**: - The authors calculated the diffraction pattern of unit mass placed on the vertices of Key - tile, further confirming the quasi - periodic nature of these tilings. ### Formula summary: - Golden ratio: \(\phi=\frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2}\) - The largest eigenvalue of the substitution matrix \(M\): \(\lambda_1 = \phi^4=6.854...\) - Relative frequencies corresponding to eigenvectors: \(\rho_H:\rho_T:\rho_P:\rho_F=\phi^4:1:3\phi:3\phi^2\) Through these studies, the authors not only revealed the quasi - periodic structure of Hat single - tile tiling, but also explored its potential physical significance, especially the characteristics related to the elastic properties that may exist in quasicrystal materials.
