Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.
Differential Cohomology as Diffeological Homotopy Theory

Abstract:Thin homotopies, introduced by Caetano-Picken, serve to axiomatize the holonomy of connections on principal bundles. This approach has been generalized to higher non-abelian bundles with connection through transport functors and higher holonomies, at least in dimension two and partially in dimension three. In this thesis, we introduce a new variant of thin homotopy based on the definition of skeletal diffeologies introduced recently by Kihara and show that, in the abelian setting, ordinary differential cohomology can be completely recovered in terms of the homotopy theory of skeletal diffeological spaces. Specifically, to any smooth manifold and non-negative integer $k$, we associate a $k$-skeletal simplicial presheaf such that its $k$th cohomology with values in the circle group is isomorphic to the abelian group of Cheeger-Simons differential characters. Further, we relate these higher holonomies to the only other existing model in the literature, developed by Gajer based on the geometric loop group. The main motivation for us is to provide a model where the differential refinement is established by refining the underlying space, rather than the coefficient object. This has the advantage of possible generalizations to non-abelian differential cohomology.

The Essence of de Rham Cohomology

Abstract:The study of differential forms that are closed but not exact reveals important information about the global topology of a manifold, encoded in the de Rham cohomology groups $H^k(M)$, named after Georges de Rham (1903-1990). This expository paper provides an explanation and exploration of de Rham cohomology and its equivalence to singular cohomology. We present an intuitive introduction to de Rham cohomology and discuss four associated computational tools: the Mayer-Vietoris theorem, homotopy invariance, Poincaré duality, and the Künneth formula. We conclude with a statement and proof of de Rham's theorem, which asserts that de Rham cohomology is equivalent to singular cohomology.

Differential geometry and general relativity with algebraifolds

Abstract:It is often noted that many of the basic concepts of differential geometry, such as the definition of connection, are purely algebraic in nature. Here, we review and extend existing work on fully algebraic formulations of differential geometry which eliminate the need for an underlying manifold. While the literature contains various independent approaches to this, we focus on one particular approach that we argue to be the most natural one based on the definition of \emph{algebraifold}, by which we mean a commutative algebra $\mathcal{A}$ for which the module of derivations of $\mathcal{A}$ is finitely generated projective. Over $\mathbb{R}$ as the base ring, this class of algebras includes the algebra $C^\infty(M)$ of smooth functions on a manifold $M$, and similarly for analytic functions. An importantly different example is the Colombeau algebra of generalized functions on $M$, which makes distributional differential geometry an instance of our formalism. Another instance is a fibred version of smooth differential geometry, since any smooth submersion $M \to N$ makes $C^\infty(M)$ into an algebraifold with $C^\infty(N)$ as the base ring.Over any field $k$ of characteristic zero, examples include the algebra of regular functions on a smooth affine variety as well as any function field.

Abstract:For a compact Lie group acting on a smooth manifold, we define the differential cohomology of a certain quotient stack involving principal bundles with connection. This produces differential equivariant cohomology groups that map to the Cartan-Weil equivariant forms and to Borel's equivariant integral cohomology. We show the Chern-Weil homomorphism for equivariant vector bundles with connection naturally factors through differential equivariant cohomology.

Abstract:We characterize primary operations in differential cohomology via stacks, and illustrate by differentially refining Steenrod squares and Steenrod powers explicitly. This requires a delicate interplay between integral, rational, and mod p cohomology, as well as cohomology with U(1) coefficients and differential forms. Along the way we develop computational techniques in differential cohomology, including a Künneth decomposition, that should also be useful in their own right, and point to applications to higher geometry and mathematical physics.

Abstract:We review Haefliger's differentiable cohomology for the pseudogroup of diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^q$. We investigate the structure needed to define such a cohomology, which, remarkably, is related to the so called Cartan distribution underlying the geometric study of PDE. We define an analogue of Haefliger differentiable cohomology for flat Cartan groupoids, investigate its infinitesimal counterpart and relate the two by a Van Est-like map. Finally, we define a characteristic map for geometric structures on manifolds $M$ associated to flat Cartan groupoids. The outcome generalizes the existing approaches to characteristic classes for foliations.

Abstract:In [Discrete differential calculus on simplicial complexes and constrained homology, Chin. Ann. Math. Ser. B 44(4), 615-640, 2023], the constrained (co)homology for simplicial complexes and independence hypergraphs is constructed via differential calculus on discrete sets. In this paper, we study the differential calculus for free algebra and subsequently study the homomorphisms of constrained (co)homology induced by inclusions of simplicial complexes and independence hypergraphs. We apply the differential calculus to hypergraphs. We realize simplicial complexes and independence hypergraphs as certain invariant traces of hypergraphs. As an application, we give the constrained persistent (co)homology for filtrations of simplicial complexes and filtrations of independence hypergraphs.

The homotopy theory of differentiable sheaves

Abstract:Many important theorems in differential topology relate properties of manifolds to properties of their underlying homotopy types -- defined e.g. using the total singular complex or the Čech nerve of a good open cover. Upon embedding the category of manifolds into the $\infty$-topos $\mathbf{Diff}^\infty$ of differentiable sheaves one gains a further notion of underlying homotopy type: the shape of the corresponding differentiable sheaf. In a first series of results we prove using simple cofinality and descent arguments that the shape of any manifold coincides with many other notions of underlying homotopy types such as the ones mentioned above. Our techniques moreover allow for computations, such as the homotopy type of the Haefliger stack, following Carchedi. This leads to more refined questions, such as what it means for a mapping differential sheaf to have the correct shape. To answer these we construct model structures as well as more general homotopical calculi on the $\infty$-category $\mathbf{Diff}^\infty$ (which restrict to its full subcategory of $0$-truncated objects,$\mathbf{Diff}^\infty_{\leq 0}$) with shape equivalences as the weak equivalences. These tools are moreover developed in such a way so as to be highly customisable, with a view towards future applications, e.g. in geometric topology. Finally, working with the $\infty$-topos $\mathbf{Diff}^0$ of sheaves on topological manifolds, we give new and conceptual proofs of some classical statements in algebraic topology. These include Dugger and Isaksen's hypercovering theorem, and the fact that the Quillen adjunction between simplicial sets and topological spaces is a Quillen equivalence.

Abstract:We develop differential algebraic K-theory for rings of integers in number fields and we construct a cycle map from geometrized bundles of modules over such a ring to the differential algebraic K-theory. We also treat some of the foundational aspects of differential cohomology, including differential function spectra and the differential Becker-Gottlieb transfer. We then state a transfer index conjecture about the equality of the Becker-Gottlieb transfer and the analytic transfer defined by Lott. In support of this conjecture, we derive some non-trivial consequences which are provable by independent means.

Global Homotopies for Differential Hochschild Cohomologies

Abstract:We construct global homotopies to compute differential Hochschild cohomologies in differential geometry. This relies on two different techniques: a symbol calculus from differential geometry and a coalgebraic version of the van Est theorem. Not only do we obtain an improved version of the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem but we also compute Hochschild cohomologies for related scenarios, e.g. for principal bundles, and invariant versions.

Abstract:As an algebraic study of differential equations, differential algebras have been studied for a century and and become an important area of mathematics. In recent years the area has been expended to the noncommutative associative and Lie algebra contexts and to the case when the operator identity has a weight in order to include difference operators and difference algebras. This paper provides a cohomology theory for differential algebras of any weights. This gives a uniform approach to both the zero weight case which is similar to the earlier study of differential Lie algebras, and the non-zero weight case which poses new challenges. As applications, abelian extensions of a differential algebra are classified by the second cohomology group. Furthermore, formal deformations of differential algebras are obtained and the rigidity of a differential algebra is characterized by the vanishing of the second cohomology group.

Abstract:What are called secondary characteristic classes in Chern-Weil theory are a refinement of ordinary characteristic classes of principal bundles from cohomology to differential cohomology. We consider the problem of refining the construction of secondary characteristic classes from cohomology sets to cocycle spaces; and from Lie groups to higher connected covers of Lie groups by smooth infinity-groups, i.e., by smooth groupal A-infinity-spaces. Namely, we realize differential characteristic classes as morphisms from infinity-groupoids of smooth principal infinity-bundles with connections to infinity-groupoids of higher U(1)-gerbes with connections. This allows us to study the homotopy fibers of the differential characteristic maps thus obtained and to show how these describe differential obstruction problems. This applies in particular to the higher twisted differential spin structures called twisted differential string structures and twisted differential fivebrane structures.

Abstract:Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field of prime characteristic. One can associate to G (or subgroups thereof) its Lie algebra, its Frobenius kernels, and the finite Chevalley group of points over a finite field. The representation theories of these structures are highly interconnected. This expository article will focus specifically on the cohomology theories of these structures and the relationships between them with the aim of highlighting a few key developments over the past 20 years and related open questions.

Abstract:The real singular cohomology ring of a homogeneous space $G/K$, interpreted as the real Borel equivariant cohomology $H^*_K(G)$, was historically the first computation of equivariant cohomology of any nontrivial connected group action. After early approaches using the Cartan model for equivariant cohomology with real coefficients and the Serre spectral sequence, post-1962 work computing the groups and rings $H^*(G/K)$ and $H^*_H(G/K)$ with more general coefficient rings motivated the development of minimal models in rational homotopy theory, the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, and A-infinity algebras. In this essay, we survey the history of these ideas and the associated results.

First, we introduce representations of differential [math]-Lie algebras. Moreover, we develop cohomology theory of differential [math]-Lie algebras. We also depict the relationship between the cohomologies of a differential [math]-Lie algebra and its associated differential Leibniz algebra with weight zero. Finally, formal deformations, abelian extensions and skeletal differential [math]-Lie 2-algebras are characterized in terms of cohomology groups.

Abstract:This is the translation to appear in the "SUPERSYMMETRY 2000 - Encyclopaedic Dictionary" of the original paper, published in March 1980, (C.R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. A-B, 290, 1980) in which basic notions of noncommutative geometry were introduced and applied to noncommutative tori. These include connections on finite projective modules, their curvature, and the Chern character. Finite projective modules on the noncommutative two-torus $ \Tb^2_{\theta}$ were realized as Schwartz spaces of vector valued functions on $\Rb$. Explicit constant curvature connections were constructed and a basic integrality phenomenon of the total curvature was displayed. The pseudo-differential calculus and the Atiyah-Singer index theorems were extended to Lie group actions on $C^*$ algebras and used to explain the above integrality of the total curvature by an index formula for finite difference-differential operators on the line. Recent interest in the hep-th literature for basic notions of noncommutative geometry in the case of noncommutative tori (cf for instance <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0012145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0012145">hep-th/0012145</a> for an excellent review) prompted us to make the English translation of the original paper available.

André-Quillen cohomology in the context of curved algebras

Abstract:The André-Quillen cohomology of an algebra with coefficients in a module is defined by deriving a functor based on Kähler differential forms. It can be computed using a cofibrant resolution of the algebra in a model category structure where weak equivalences are quasi-isomorphisms. This construction works for algebras over an operad, providing a cohomology theory tailored for each type of algebra. For curved algebras however, the notion of quasi-isomorphism is meaningless. The occurrence and importance of curved structures in various research topics (symplectic topology, deformation theory, derived geometry, mathematical physics) motivate the development of their homotopy theory and André-Quillen cohomology theory. To get a homotopical context with an appropriate notion of weak equivalence, we consider filtered complete modules with a predifferential inducing a differential on the associated graded. Curved algebras in such modules are algebras over a curved operad. In this article, we consider curved operads which are not necessarily augmented. Bar and cobar constructions adapted to these curved operads are developed, as well as Koszul duality theory. Consequently, we obtain homotopy versions of our curved algebras and make it explicit for interesting cases. Two main examples are the curved operads encoding curved unital associative algebras and curved complex Lie algebras. In particular, homotopy curved unital associative algebras describe the structure of Floer complexes of lagrangian submanifolds and Fukaya categories in symplectic topology. Bar and cobar constructions for curved algebras are also developed, and we obtain resolutions from which we compute their André-Quillen cohomology with module coefficients. Our computations in the case of curved complex Lie algebras reveal an interesting link between their André-Quillen cohomology and derived complex analytic geometry.

Abstract:We define quantum exterior product wedge_h and quantum exterior differential d_h on Poisson manifolds, of which symplectic manifolds are an important class of examples. Quantum de Rham cohomology is defined as the cohomology of d_h. We also define quantum Dolbeault cohomology. Quantum hard Lefschetz theorem is proved. We also define a version of quantum integral, and prove the quantum Stokes theorem. By the trick of replacing d by d_h and wedge by wedge_h in the usual definitions, we define many quantum analogues of important objects in differential geometry, e.g. quantum curvature. The quantum characteristic classes are then studied along the lines of classical Chern-Weil theory, i.e., they can be represented by expressions of quantum curvature. Quantum equivariant de Rham cohomology is defined in a similar fashion. Calculations are done for some examples, which show that quantum de Rham cohomology is different from the quantum cohomology defined using pseudo-holomorphic curves.
