Abstract:An introduction to the theory of orbifolds from a modern perspective, combining techniques from geometry, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. One of the main motivations, and a major source of examples, is string theory, where orbifolds play an important role. The subject is first developed following the classical description analogous to manifold theory, after which the book branches out to include the useful description of orbifolds provided by groupoids, as well as many examples in the context of algebraic geometry. Classical invariants such as de Rham cohomology and bundle theory are developed, a careful study of orbifold morphisms is provided, and the topic of orbifold K-theory is covered. The heart of this book, however, is a detailed description of the Chen-Ruan cohomology, which introduces a product for orbifolds and has had significant impact. The final chapter includes explicit computations for a number of interesting examples.

Abstract:As interaction between autonomous agents, communication can be analyzed in game-theoretic terms. Meaning game is proposed to formalize the core of intended communication in which the sender sends a message and the receiver attempts to infer its meaning intended by the sender. Basic issues involved in the game of natural language communication are discussed, such as salience, grammaticality, common sense, and common belief, together with some demonstration of the feasibility of game-theoretic account of language.

Abstract:The homology of the free and the based loop space of a compact globally symmetric space can be studied through explicit cycles. We use cycles constructed by Bott and Samelson and by Ziller to study the string topology coproduct and the Chas-Sullivan product on compact symmetric spaces. We show that the Chas-Sullivan product for compact symmetric spaces is highly non-trivial for any rank and we prove that there are many non-nilpotent classes whose powers correspond to the iteration of closed geodesics. Moreover, we show that the based string topology coproduct is trivial for compact symmetric spaces of higher rank and we study the implications of this result for the string topology coproduct on the free loop space.

Abstract:We construct a space of string diagrams, which are a type of fatgraph with some additional data, and show that there are string topology operations on the chains of the free loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold which are parameterized by the chains on the space of string diagrams. These operations are shown to recover known structure on homology of the free loop space.

Geometric Topology

Abstract:This paper is an exposition of the new subject of String Topology. We present an introduction to this exciting new area, as well as a survey of some of the latest developments, and our views about future directions of research. We begin with reviewing the seminal paper of Chas and Sullivan, which started String Topology by introducing a BV-algebra structure on the homology of a loop space of a manifold, then discuss the homotopy theoretic approach to String Topology, using the Thom-Pontrjagin construction, the cacti operad, and fat graphs. We review quantum field theories and indicate how string topology fits into the general picture. Other topics include an open-closed version of string topology, a Morse theoretic interpretation, relation to Gromov-Witten invariants, and "brane'' topology, which deals with sphere spaces. The paper is a joint account of the lecture series given by each of us at the 2003 Summer School on String Topology and Hochschild Homology in Almeria, Spain.

Abstract:Joyce structures are a class of geometric structures which first arose in relation to holomorphic generating functions for Donaldson-Thomas invariants. They can be thought of as non-linear analogues of Frobenius structures, or as special classes of complex hyperkahler manifolds. We give a detailed introduction to Joyce structures, with particular focus on the geometry of the associated twistor space. We also prove several new results.

Abstract:This tutorial gives an advanced introduction to string diagrams and graph languages for higher-order computation. The subject matter develops in a principled way, starting from the two dimensional syntax of key categorical concepts such as functors, adjunctions, and strictification, and leading up to Cartesian Closed Categories, the core mathematical model of the lambda calculus and of functional programming languages. This methodology inverts the usual approach of proceeding from syntax to a categorical interpretation, by rationally reconstructing a syntax from the categorical model. The result is a graph syntax -- more precisely, a hierarchical hypergraph syntax -- which in many ways is shown to be an improvement over the conventional linear term syntax. The rest of the tutorial focuses on applications of interest to programming languages: operational semantics, general frameworks for type inference, and complex whole-program transformations such as closure conversion and automatic differentiation.

Large Scale Geometries of Infinite Strings

Abstract:We introduce geometric consideration into the theory of formal languages. We aim to shed light on our understanding of global patterns that occur on infinite strings. We utilise methods of geometric group theory. Our emphasis is on large scale geometries. Two infinite strings have the same large scale geometry if there are colour preserving bi-Lipschitz maps with distortions between the strings. Call these maps quasi-isometries. Introduction of large scale geometries poses several questions. The first question asks to study the partial order induced by quasi-isometries. This partial order compares large scale geometries; as such it presents an algebraic tool for classification of global patterns. We prove there is a greatest large scale geometry and infinitely many minimal large scale geometries. The second question is related to understanding the quasi-isometric maps on various classes of strings. The third question investigates the sets of large scale geometries of strings accepted by computational models, e.g. Büchi automata. We provide an algorithm that describes large scale geometries of strings accepted by Büchi automata. This links large scale geometries with automata theory. The fourth question studies the complexity of the quasi-isometry problem. We show the problem is $\Sigma_3^0$-complete thus providing a bridge with computability theory. Finally, the fifth question asks to build algebraic structures that are invariants of large scale geometries. We invoke asymptotic cones, a key concept in geometric group theory, defined via model-theoretic notion of ultra-product. Partly, we study asymptotic cones of algorithmically random strings thus connecting the topic with algorithmic randomness.

Algebraic string topology from the neighborhood of infinity

Abstract:We construct and study an algebraic analogue of the loop coproduct in string topology, also known as the Goresky-Hingston coproduct. Our algebraic setup, which under this analogy takes the place of the complex of chains on the free loop space of a possibly non-simply connected manifold, is the Hochschild chain complex of a smooth $A_{\infty}$-category equipped with a pre-Calabi-Yau structure and a trivialization of a version of the Chern character of its diagonal bimodule. The algebraic analogue of the loop coproduct is part of a more general mapping cone construction, which we describe in terms of the categorical formal punctured neighborhood of infinity associated to the underlying smooth $A_\infty$-category. We use a graphical formalism for $A_\infty$-categories and bimodules to describe explicit models for the operations and homotopies involved. We also compute explicitly the algebraic coproduct in the context of the string topology of spheres.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to describe connections between the loop space of the 2-sphere, Artin's braid groups, a choice of simplicial group whose homotopy groups are given by modules called Lie(n), as well as work of Milnor, and Habegger-Lin on "homotopy string links". The current article exploits Lie algebras associated to Vassiliev invariants in work of T. Kohno, and provides connections between these various topics. Two consequences are as follows: 1) the homotopy groups of spheres are identified as "natural" sub-quotients of free products of pure braid groups, and 2) an axiomatization of certain simplicial groups arising from braid groups is shown to characterize the homotopy types of connected $CW$-complexes.

Abstract:Given a space with a circle action, we study certain cocyclic chain complexes and prove a theorem relating cyclic homology to $S^1$-equivariant homology, in the spirit of celebrated work of Jones. As an application, we describe a chain level refinement of the gravity algebra structure on the (negative) $S^1$-equivariant homology of the free loop space of a closed oriented smooth manifold, based on work of Irie on chain level string topology and work of Ward on an $S^1$-equivariant version of operadic Deligne's conjecture.

Abstract:In his Inventiones paper, Ziller (Invent. Math: 1-22, 1977) computed the integral homology as a graded abelian group of the free loop space of compact, globally symmetric spaces of rank 1. Chas and Sullivan (String Topology, 1999)showed that the homology of the free loop space of a compact closed orientable manifold can be equipped with a loop product and a BV-operator making it a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) developed a spectral sequence which converges to the loop homology as a spectral sequence of algebras. They computed the algebra structure of the loop homology of spheres and complex projective spaces by using Ziller's results and the method of Brown-Shih (Ann. of Math. 69:223-246, 1959, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 3: 93-176, 1962). In this note we compute the loop homology algebra by using only spectral sequences and the technique of universal examples. We therefore not only obtain Zillers' and Brown-Shihs' results in an elementary way, we also replace the roundabout computations of Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) making them independent of Ziller's and Brown-Shihs' work. Moreover we offer an elementary technique which we expect can easily be generalized and applied to a wider family of spaces, not only the globally symmetric ones.

A Symmetry-centric Perspective on the Geometry of the String Landscape and the Swampland

Abstract:As famously observed by Ooguri and Vafa nearly twenty years ago, scalar field moduli spaces in quantum gravity appear to exhibit various universal features. For instance, they seem to be infinite in diameter, have trivial fundamental group, and feature towers of massive particles that become light in their asymptotic limits. In this essay, we explain how these features can be reformulated in more modern language using generalized notions of global symmetries. Such symmetries are ubiquitous in non-gravitational quantum field theories, but it is widely believed that they must be either gauged or broken in quantum gravity. In what follows, we will see that the observations of Ooguri and Vafa can be understood as consequences of such gauging or breaking.

Intersection Multiplicity in Loop Spaces and the String Topology Coproduct

Abstract:The string topology coproduct is often perceived as a counterpart in string topology to the Chas-Sullivan product. However, in certain aspects the string topology coproduct is much harder to understand than the Chas-Sullivan product. In particular the coproduct is not homotopy-invariant and it seems much harder to compute. In this article we give an overview over the string topology coproduct and use the notion of intersection multiplicity of homology classes in loop spaces to show that the string topology coproduct and the based string topology coproduct are trivial for certain classes of manifolds. In particular we show that the string topology coproduct vanishes on product manifolds where both factors have vanishing Euler characteristic and we show that the based coproduct is trivial for total spaces of fiber bundles with sections. We also discuss implications of these results.

Abstract:This is an introduction and a survey on geometric structures modelled on closed orbits of real forms acting on spaces of flags. We focus on 3-manifolds and the flag space of all pairs of a point and a line containing it in $${\mathbb{P}}({\mathbb{C}}^3)$$ . It includes a description of general flag structures which are not necessarily flat and a combinatorial description of flat structures through configurations of flags in closed orbits of real forms. We also review volume and Chern–Simons invariants for those structures.

Abstract:Firstly, we generalize a semi-classical limit of open strings on D-branes in group manifolds. The limit gives rise to rigid open strings, whose dynamics can efficiently be described in terms of a matrix algebra. Alternatively, the dynamics is coded in group theory coefficients whose properties are translated in a diagrammatical language. In the case of compact groups, it is a simplified version of rational boundary conformal field theories, while for non-compact groups, the construction gives rise to new associative products. Secondly, we argue that the intuitive formalism that we provide for the semi-classical limit, extends to the case of quantum groups. The associative product we construct in this way is directly related to the boundary vertex operator algebra of open strings on symmetry preserving branes in WZW models, and generalizations thereof, e.g. to non-compact groups. We treat the groups SU(2) and SL(2,R) explicitly. We also discuss the precise relation of the semi-classical open string dynamics to Berezin quantization and to star product theory.
