Abstract:We give explicit formulas to compute most of the decomposition numbers of reductions modulo 2 of irreducible spin representations of symmetric groups indexed by partitions with at most 2 parts. In many of the still open cases small upper bounds are found.

Abstract:For a finite group, it is interesting to determine when two ordinary irreducible representations have the same $p$-modular reduction; that is, when two rows of the decomposition matrix in characteristic $p$ are equal, or equivalently when the corresponding $p$-modular Brauer characters are the same. We complete this task for the double covers of the symmetric group when $p=2$, by determining when the $2$-modular reduction of an irreducible spin representation coincides with a $2$-modular Specht module. In fact, we obtain a more general result: we determine when an irreducible spin representation has $2$-modular Brauer character proportional to that of a Specht module. In the course of the proof, we use induction and restriction functors to construct a function on generalised characters which has the effect of swapping runners in abacus displays for the labelling partitions.

Abstract:For any finite group $G$ and any prime $p$ one can ask which ordinary irreducible representations remain irreducible in characteristic $p$, or more generally, which representations remain homogeneous in characteristic $p$. In this paper we address this question for $p=3$ when $G$ is a proper double cover of the symmetric or alternating group. We obtain a classification except in the case of a certain family of partitions relating to spin RoCK blocks. Our techniques involve induction and restriction, degree calculations, decomposing projective characters and recent results of Kleshchev and Livesey on spin RoCK blocks.

Abstract:We classify globally irreducible representations of alternating groups and double covers of symmetric and alternating groups. In order to achieve this classification we also completely characterise irreducible representations of such groups which reduce almost homogeneously in every characteristic. This also allows us to classify irreducible representations that remain irreducible in every characteristic. In particular we show that, apart from finitely many exceptions, for any of these three questions such representations are either $1$-dimensional or basic spin representations.

Abstract:Let $\GSpin(V)$ (resp. $\GPin(V)$) be a general spin group (resp. a general Pin group) associated with a nondegenerate quadratic space $V$ of dimension $n$ over an Archimedean local field $F$. For a nondegenerate quadratic space $W$ of dimension $n-1$ over $F$, we also consider $\GSpin(W)$ and $\GPin(W)$. We prove the multiplicity-at-most-one theorem in the Archimedean case for a pair of groups ($\GSpin(V), \GSpin(W)$) and also for a pair of groups ($\GPin(V), \GPin(W)$); namely, we prove that the restriction to $\GSpin(W)$ (resp. $\GPin(W)$) of an irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of $\GSpin(V)$ (resp. $\GPin(V)$) is multiplicity free.

Abstract:Abstract We calculate the (super)decomposition matrix for a RoCK block of a double cover of the symmetric group with abelian defect, verifying a conjecture of the first author. To do this, we exploit a theorem of the second author and Livesey that a RoCK block is Morita superequivalent to a wreath superproduct of a certain quiver (super)algebra with the symmetric group . We develop the representation theory of this wreath superproduct to compute its Cartan invariants. We then directly construct projective characters for to calculate its decomposition matrix up to a triangular adjustment, and show that this adjustment is trivial by comparing Cartan invariants.

Abstract:We present a performant and rigorous algorithm for certifying that a matrix is close to being a projection onto an irreducible subspace of a given group representation. This addresses a problem arising when one seeks solutions to semi-definite programs (SDPs) with a group symmetry. Indeed, in this context, the dimension of the SDP can be significantly reduced if the irreducible representations of the group action are explicitly known. Rigorous numerical algorithms for decomposing a given group representation into irreps are known, but fairly expensive. To avoid this performance problem, existing software packages -- e.g. RepLAB, which motivated the present work -- use randomized heuristics. While these seem to work well in practice, the problem of to which extent the results can be trusted arises. Here, we provide rigorous guarantees applicable to finite and compact groups, as well as a software implementation that can interface with RepLAB. Under natural assumptions, a commonly used previous method due to Babai and Friedl runs in time O(n^5) for n-dimensional representations. In our approach, the complexity of running both the heuristic decomposition and the certification step is O(max{n^3 log n, D d^2 log d}), where d is the maximum dimension of an irreducible subrepresentation, and D is the time required to multiply elements of the group. A reference implementation interfacing with RepLAB is provided.
Representations of the symmetric group are decomposable in polynomial time

Abstract:We introduce an algorithm to decompose orthogonal matrix representations of the symmetric group over the reals into irreducible representations, which as a by-product also computes the multiplicities of the irreducible representations. The algorithm applied to a $d$-dimensional representation of $S_n$ is shown to have a complexity of $O(n^2 d^3)$ operations for determining which irreducible representations are present and their corresponding multiplicities and a further $O(n d^4)$ operations to fully decompose representations with non-trivial multiplicities. These complexity bounds are pessimistic and in a practical implementation using floating point arithmetic and exploiting sparsity we observe better complexity. We demonstrate this algorithm on the problem of computing multiplicities of two tensor products of irreducible representations (the Kronecker coefficients problem) as well as higher order tensor products. For hook and hook-like irreducible representations the algorithm has polynomial complexity as $n$ increases. We also demonstrate an application to constructing a basis of multivariate orthogonal polynomials with respect to a tensor product weight so that applying a permutation of variables induces an irreducible representation.

The mod 2 Seiberg-Witten invariants of spin structures and spin families

Abstract:We completely determine the mod $2$ Seiberg-Witten invariants for any spin structure on any closed, oriented, smooth $4$-manifold $X$. Our computation confirms the validity of the simple type conjecture mod $2$ for spin structures. Our proof also works for families of spin $4$-manifolds and thus computes the mod $2$ Seiberg-Witten invariants for spin families. The proof of our main result uses $Pin(2)$-symmetry to define an enhancement of the mod $2$ Seiberg-Witten invariants. We prove a connected sum formula for the enhanced invariant using localisation in equivariant cohomology. Unlike the usual Seiberg-Witten invariant, the enhanced invariant does not vanish on taking connected sums and by exploiting this property, we are able to compute the enhanced invariant.

Abstract:The character table of the symmetric group $S_n$, of permutations of $n$ objects, is of fundamental interest in theoretical physics, combinatorics as well as computational complexity theory. We investigate the implications of an identity, which has a geometrical interpretation in combinatorial topological field theories, relating the column sum of normalised central characters of $S_n$ to a sum of structure constants of multiplication in the centre of the group algebra of $S_n$. The identity leads to the proof that a combinatorial computation of the column sum belongs to complexity class \shP. The sum of structure constants has an interpretation in terms of the counting of branched covers of the sphere. This allows the identification of a tractable subset of the structure constants related to genus zero covers. We use this subset to prove that the column sum for a conjugacy class labelled by partition $\lambda$ is non-vanishing if and only if the permutations in the conjugacy class are even. This leads to the result that the determination of the vanishing or otherwise of the column sum is in complexity class \pP. The subset gives a positive lower bound on the column sum for any even $ \lambda$. For any disjoint decomposition of $ \lambda$ as $\lambda_1 \sqcup \lambda_2 $ we obtain a lower bound for the column sum at $ \lambda$ in terms of the product of the column sums for $ \lambda_1$ and$\lambda_2$. This can be expressed as a super-additivity property for the logarithms of column sums of normalized characters.

Abstract:This paper presents a natural generalisation of Saxl conjecture from a Lie-theoretical perspective, which is verified for the exceptional types. For classical types, progress is made using spin representations, revealing connections to certain tensor product decomposition problems in symmetric groups. We provide an alternative uniform description of the cuspidal family (in the sense of Lusztig) through spin representations, offering an equivalent conjecture formulation. Additionally, we generalise Saxl conjecture to finite Coxeter groups and prove it for the non-crystallographic cases.

Abstract:We classify indecomposable summands of mixed tensor powers of the natural representation for the general linear supergroup up to isomorphism. We also give a formula for the characters of these summands in terms of composite supersymmetric Schur polynomials, and give a method for decomposing their tensor products. Along the way, we describe indecomposable objects in Rep(GL_\delta) and explain how to decompose their tensor products.

Abstract:We discuss a decomposition formula of simple products of fermion correlation functions with cyclic constrains and its applications to spin sums of super string amplitudes. Based on some facts which are noted or derived in this paper, we propose a candidate of the form of this decomposition formula for some of higher genus cases which includes genus two case. Although we had to use several conjectures and assumptions due to unsolved mathematical difficulties, the method described in the text may be an efficient way to obtain the decomposition formula in higher genus cases. In particular, for those cases, we propose a concrete method to sum over non singular even spin structures for the product of arbitrary number of the fermion correlation functions with cyclic constraints in super string amplitudes. We also propose an explicit generalization of Eisenstein-Kronecker series to the higher genus cases in the process of considerations above.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to use conservative descent to study semi-orthogonal decompositions for some homogeneous varieties over general bases. We produce a semi-orthogonal decomposition for the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a generalized Severi-Brauer scheme. This extends known results for Sever-Brauer varieties and Grassmanianns. We use our results to construct semi-orthogonal decompositions for flag varieties over arbitrary bases. This generalises a result of Kapranov.

Abstract:Let $G_0$ be a reductive group over $\mathbb{F}_p$ with simply connected derived subgroup, (geometrically) connected center and Coxeter number $h+1$. We extend Jantzen's generic decomposition pattern from $(2h-1)$-generic to $h$-generic Deligne--Lusztig representations, which is optimal. We also prove several results on the ``obvious'' Jordan--Hölder factors of general Deligne--Lusztig representations.
